The magic present in the original show is not in this story, same with Cedric. Some aspects will be kept (i.e the flying horses) to help the story along. This is a more mature take on Sofia the First and I would not recommend that children read this story.

I'm really bad at catching typo's so sorry XD

I do not own any characters or the story. Disney holds all these rights.

The kingdom of Enchancia was a regal and wealthy kingdom. The people were well cared for under the rule of King Roland II. The king was young, handsome, and smart. He had been a knight when he was a prince and was well-built because of this, with muscles and a chiseled jaw. His blond hair and dark blue eyes had women all over the land swoon and try to capture his affection. Roland had two teenage children, twins, Princess Amber and the heir-apparent Prince James. His wife, Princess Amelia had died in childbirth over 18 years ago, when Roland was still the heir-apparent. The King had only been 22 when his wife died and both of his parents followed within a year, leaving him as king and a single father to two small children.

Despite this rough patch in life, Roland was a fair and just king. He taxed his people equitably and did his best to support them, especially those living in the village surrounding his castle. With most of his attention turned to his people, King Roland could not find much time to raise his twins in their early life, leaving them mostly to be raised by servants. As they got older, and as the sting if his wife's death faded, he became more involved, attending his son's flying derby races, and his daughter's dance recitals.

Still, the king never remarried, instead finding most of his time spent with his children as he watched them blossom into young people. Yet, when the town cobbler Miranda brought him a new pair of shoes, he was captured by her grace and beauty. She spoke to him like a person, not like a king. She was interested in him, instead of the crown that he wore.

Miranda was a widowed cobbler from the village around the castle. Her late-husband had owned the store and she had taken over when he had died while she was still pregnant with their only child, Sofia. Miranda was beautiful, a tall but thin lady with chestnut brown hair and silky, smooth brown eyes. Her voice was soft yet commanding. She spoke and moved with the grace of a thousand princesses, even though she was born a commoner.

King Roland felt like it was love at first sight. He and Miranda quickly began to exchange letters, writing about their lives, their children, and anything and everything. Roland's older sister Princess Tilly, commented on a difference in her little brother. She said "There is a spark of joy that I have not seen since Amelia passed." This spark of joy and these letters were what led Roland to find himself in the royal carriage heading down to the village.

He found himself standing in front of the two story cobblers shop in the town square. The stone building seemed bleak and dusty to Roland, but the flowers surrounding the store and the bright colorful signs seemed to give it life. He pushed open the wooden door, a bell chiming lightly as he did so. Miranda was behind the counter, her back turned as she worked on what looked like a pair of women's shoes. "Just a moment please!" She called over her shoulder.

'Of course." Roland said in his smooth, tenor voice. Miranda whirled around, a little startled.

She collected herself and smiled, "Roland! This is a pleasant surprise." She exclaimed, her eyes brightly shining at him.

Roland found his smile grow as he replied, "Not as pleasant as you my dear." His fingers fidgeted with the wooden box in his pocket. "I was hoping to steal a moment of your time. Do you have a minute to spare? I can come back if you are busy." He asked.

"Oh no. For you, I can make time." She wiped her hands and took her apron off, coming around the counter to curtsy and greet him. He smiled and walked closer to her and was about to hold her when the door to the shop flew open.

A purple whirlwind rushed past them, and up the stairs. Miranda's daughter Sofia was home from school. "Hi Mom!" She yelled as she disappeared upstairs without even a glance to her mother. Roland could hear banging and noise from the flat upstairs.

Miranda smiled weakly, "I am so sorry. She's always in a rush and is not always aware. She remembers her manners when she slows down enough." She tried to explain.

Roland laughed. "No need to explain. My son James is the same way, in and out of the castle every five minutes with something new to do." Miranda chuckled slightly as Sofia's footsteps could be heard on the stairs again. Sofia appeared in the room, adjusting her buttercup leader uniform.

Sofia finally looked up, and instantly froze. Her mouth dropped in shock as she stared at her mother and the king standing close together. King Roland smiled at the young girl, this was his first time meeting her. She was a tall girl, nearly as tall as James, with brown curls running down her back. Her green eyes were sparkling and full of life. She looked a lot like Miranda, they shared the same beauty and grace. Sofia seemed very different from many young teenagers that Roland had met. She wore a yellow uniform with a brown messenger bag on her shoulder.

"Yo-Your Majesty, I apologize. I didn't see you when I came in." Sofia mumbled and she dipped into a low curtsy.

Roland smiled, she seemed like a sweet girl. He sensed much of her mother in her. He kindly replied "That is perfectly alright Sofia, your mother has told me what a busy life you lead. I understand you lead the Buttercup Scouting program on top of being in school and working with your mother?"

Sofia smiled nervously, twisting her hands together as she replied, "Yes Sir. I really do apologize but I must be going. I have around 10 little girls I'm supposed to teach this afternoon and I am running a bit late. Please excuse me."

Roland nodded at her and she dipped into another low curtsy before leaving the store, looking quite embarrassed. Roland watched as she rushed to two other girls in similar uniforms before he turned back to Miranda with a smile. "Now. I have a very important question to ask you."

That fateful conversation found Sofia standing in a small room in the Village Cathedral as maids fussed with her hair and tightened her corset. She wore a giant purple ball gown covered in stark white pearls. Sofia fidgeted as her shoes began to hurt, she had never worn high heels before but a royal wedding seemed to be an event for heels.

Sofia had not even met her new siblings yet, but she was about to be crowned Princess Sofia of Enchancia. Her mother was down the hall getting her new dress put on.

The news of her mother's marriage came as a shock to Sofia. She had not expected that her life would be thrown upside down. King Roland had barely explained things to her, but promised that he would tonight during a family dinner after the ball. Sofia felt rather overwhelmed, hopefully her new siblings would be kind to her and help her navigate this new life.

Sofia soon made her way to the narthex of the cathedral, standing with the wedding party. Her mom had been busy and kept away from her all day so Sofia was on her own. Loud voices approached the wedding party and Sofia turned to see a young man walking over with servants trying to fix his suit and pin his medals on.

"Prince James! Please stay still!" One butler begged as he tried to adjust the color of his jacket. Sofia's eyes widened, this was her new older brother! She studied him as the servants rushed to get him together. He was around six feet tall, about two inches taller then Sofia. He had blonde wavy hair that was styled back with gel to keep it out of his face, showing off his blue eyes and the freckles across his nose. His face looked sunburned and he looked tan and muscular.

The castle steward, Baileywick, was scolding James for apparently playing football right before his father's wedding. "This is a disgrace! You are the crown prince, and an adult, don't let this happen again!" He stated as the servants finished dressing the young prince, Baileywick nodded in satisfaction, "Now. Go stand with your sister." He told James before another situation caught his attention.

James looked around, trying to spot his sister. "But Amber isn't here yet!" He called after Baileywick before noticing Sofia and grinning. He walked over, "So, you're my new little sister? I'm James." He said with a smile.

"I'm Sofia your majesty." Sofia introduced herself with a slight curtsy. James laughed before saying,

"Oh don't bother with titles. We are family now, or will be in ten minutes. You will be the same rank as me, no need to be so stuck up." His nose wrinkled at his last words.

Sofia giggled, "Not one for fancy events?" She guessed,

James grinned, "Nah. I'd much rather be outside right now, but I love my dad so I gotta support him. Plus it's just a part of royal life. You'll have a ball in a few weeks to welcome you to the family. We have fancy events every couple of weeks." Sofia nodded, soaking in his words with great interest. James had been a prince his whole life and knew much more about the royal life as the future king then Sofia does as a formal village girl.

She and James continued talking when suddenly a loud, commanding voice caught their attention. James just groaned as a large group of people appeared in the narthex. In the complete opposite of when James appeared, a young woman was giving orders to servants in a rather mean tone. She was wearing a light yellow dress with her blonde haired curled down her back. Her tiara was super sparkly, highlighting her blue eyes. She was a short and petite girl, making Sofia feel self conscious abut her height.

James sighed, "Amber..." He groaned. Sofia's eyes went wide, this was her sister?

Princess Amber finished bossing everyone in sight around, then wrinkled her nose and walked over to James and Sofia. She gave Sofia a look once up and down sneered. "And you are?" She asked in an annoyed voice.

Sofia ignored it and smiled at her sweetly, "I'm Sofia!"

Amber frowned, "Oh...I see."

"You know, I've always wanted a sister!" Sofia said, trying to connect.

"Step sister, and for future reference the proper way to address a princess is 'You Majesty' Got it?" She said as if talking to a toddler.

Sofia frowned, "But technically won't I be a princess just like you in ten minutes?" She asked, a little confused as James had told her the opposite.

"Yes. In ten minutes and no less. Until then, I am a royal of higher standing, and you are to address me as such." Amber said with a snobbish smile.

Sofia was very sweet so she just let the whole thing slide, plus her attention was drawn away by her mother arriving. Her mom looked like a fairy tale character. Her white dress was gorgeous and her train and veil went on for miles. She looked like a picture perfect queen.

Many people were fussing over Miranda but she only had eyes for her children. She side stepped everyone and walked over to them, grabbing Sofia's hand and James's. "I hope you all know, this day is about you three as much as it is about your father and I. This whole day is about becoming a new family and I know this is a big adjustment for everyone but I love all three of you."

Amber beamed and hugged Miranda tightly, completely different then how she had treated Sofia previously. Miranda seemed surprised but hugged her back.

James chose to hug Sofia tightly, making her grin. All too soon they were lined up for the procession and the big, oak doors to the nave opened, revealing a large crowd and King Roland at the end of the aisle, waiting for his new family.

The rest of the wedding, coronation, and ball passed like a whirlwind. The second the tiara was placed on Sofia's head, a weight settled in her stomach, but watching her mom and new dad spin around the dance floor happily made her feel better. James offered to dance with her, but Sofia declined, not wanting to embarrass the royal family with her inability to dance.

Soon, the guests were leaving and the family changed in to "simpler" clothes for dinner. The simpler clothes were still nicer then anything Sofia had ever worn before being crowned princess. She changed into a pink ballgown and silver tiara along with high heels, which made Sofia's feet ache.

Soon the whole royal family was sat around the royal dinning table. It was a more intimate setting then the hustle of the royal wedding ball. James and Amber were sat next to each other. Amber looked disinterested in the current affairs and James was eating as quickly as humanly possible. Sofia sat across from them with her mom at the foot of the table and her new dad at the head.

King Roland smiled at Sofia, "I'm sure you have many questions about life as a princess. I will do anything to answer any questions that you may have, as will your sister and brother."

"Step sister." Amber mumbled, frowning at Sofia. James on the other hand nodding vigorously to his dad's words, offering Sofia a smile full of meat and beans.

"Manners James." King Roland reminded his son with a slight sigh. James mumbled an apology with his mouth still full and continued to eat. Queen Miranda stifled her laugh at her new son and Roland smiled at her lovingly.

Roland then turned back to Sofia. "Starting tomorrow you will start school at Royal Prep Academy. It is the local secondary school for royals from around the land. I spoke to the headmistress, Madame Flora, and based on your grades in the village schools you will be placed in the school as a 12th year instead of 11th."

Amber gasped at her father, "But that means that she will be in the same grade as us!"

Roland frowned, "Yes it does. And I hope you will help Sofia feel welcome. RPA is a different environment then the village school."

Sofia smiled, "I'm looking forward to it. I love school and I hope I can learn a lot at Royal Prep."

James grinned and swallowed his food before saying, "You can come watch me play Flying Derby! All the best princes at the school play! Even Amber's fiancé!" He exclaimed.

Sofia frowned at that, "Flying Derby? What is that? And what do you mean fiancé? She is only 18, how do you have a fiancé?"

Amber scuffed at Sofia's ignorance. James then launched into a long explanation of the rules of Flying Derby. "It's the best sport ever! It's with flying horses and you race in teams of two or four to beat the other team through an obstacle course and-"

King Roland cut his son off, "That was another thing I needed to speak with you about. Royal Teenagers are typically arranged to be married sometime in their Upper Secondary School years. Amber is to marry Prince Zander of Tangu. She will become the queen someday of Tangu. James is not formally engaged yet but in the next few months he will be proposing to Princess Cleo." Amber flinched at those words.

James started laughing at the bitter look that had appeared on Amber's face. "She's mad because Cleo is her best friend and I'm marrying her! But Zander is mine and it's so funny." He continued to laugh as Amber swatted at him with her fan.

"Does that mean I need to be married?" Sofia asked her father over the noise of her step siblings, a knot forming in her stomach.

Miranda sighed sadly, "Yes. Your father already had a few princes ask and he selected one."

Both Amber and James stopped their fighting at these words. "He has?" They exclaimed.

Everyone turned to King Roland. Roland cleared his throat. "Ah, yes. You won't be marrying an heir which I decided would probably be best as you are being thrust into royal life. Your mother looked over a few of the matches with me and agreed that you would be a good pair. Prince Hugo of Choria will propose to you at your debut ball which is in just a few weeks."

Amber jumped up from her chair, "Prince Hugo! Oh, Daddy how could you?" She then ran from the room in tears.

James sighed, "Great."

Sofia frowned, trying to absorb all this new information. "What did I do?" She asked her brother.

James sighed, "Nothing. Amber had hoped at one point that Prince Hugo would ask to marry her but he never contacted father so she had to accept Zander's proposal."

Sofia frowned, "Oh." Her mind was racing. She would be engaged to prince she has never met before in a few days.

Soon after dinner, Sofia was led to her new room and looked around. The bed in the center of the large room was covered in cream blankets with huge pillows. The room could probably fit her whole old house. The big bay windows looked out to the royal garden. Shelf's were full of books and china trinkets. A large closet held more gowns then she could ever wear, tiaras, and shoes. A blue school uniform was hung on the closet door. It consisted of a short plaid blue skirt, a white button up, a blue blazer with RPA's crest on the chest, a pair of Mary Jane shoes, a pair of white socks, and a blue hair bow.

Sofia sat on the bed and sighed. The whole day had been so long. Her new sister, sorry, step sister hated her. She was starting at an all royal secondary school. She would be getting married soon. It was all just so much. She walked over to one of the big windows and looked out at the garden. It seemed to go on for miles. Sofia sighed and began to sing, letting out all her feelings, "Everything seems crazy big, and I'm feeling unsteady. Mom says I'll be just fine but I don't think I'm ready. New school, new friends, new family, a boy that I have to marry."

She stood up, twirling around as she sang, " I'm just a little girl from a small, small town. In this world I don't stand a chance!"

Sofia pulled the tiara out of her hair, staring at it, "I'm not ready to be a princess. I don't have what it takes. I'm too tall for gowns.I look bad in crowns, and I'm gonna make a bajillion mistakes. I'm too average to be a princess, I respectfully refuse. I don't know the rules, I don't want the jewels, and these feet were made for comfortable shoes!" And with that, Sofia kicked off her high heels, her feet sighing in relief. She continued to sing as she looked at all the things in her room, "Shelves bursting with trinkets that I'm afraid to touch. Fancy books and ginormous pillows! It's all much too much! Too much!"

Sofia rushes out of her room in her bare feet, running down the hall in an unladylike fashion, "I'm not ready to be a princess. One look and that seems clear. Cancel my debut, keep your royal crew, and if I ever find Mom's room, I'm outta here."

Sofia collapsed into a window seat, tucking her feet under her as she watched the stars outside, she quietly finished up her song, "Sofia, not a noble name. Sofia, even my wave is lame. I'm not ready to be a princess."

She sighed and continued to watch the stars, her mind still racing.

"Sofia?" A voice broke her from her thoughts. She jumped and glanced over her shoulder to see her father and brother.

"Oh. Hi. Sorry, I can go back to my room." She started to get up but then James plopped next to her, pulling her down to stay seated next to him. Roland then knelt down on one knee in front of her.

"Oh no, you can explore. James and I just wanted to give you this." Roland said, holding up a purple amulet.

"It's a royal tradition to give a new member of the family a gift besides their new crown." James explained.

Roland nodded, "For your mother, it was her wedding ring, and for you it is my grandmother's amulet. She always told me that the ancient princesses spoke to her and guided her with their wisdom. I'm not sure if I believe her." Sofia giggled at that as Roland continued, "But I do hope that this serves as a reminder that you are a part of our family and we love you very much." Roland then handed it to James, who clasped it around his sister's neck.

Sofia looked down at the sparkly necklace before launching into her father's arms and hugging him tightly. "Thank you." She said happily. Roland smiled and hugged her back.

Once Sofia sat back, Roland smiled, "I am going to retire for the evening. Don't stay up too late, you both have school tomorrow."

"Goodnight father!" James called as Roland walked away.

Sofia waved goodbye and then glance outside again. "Is something bugging you Sofia?" James asked.

Sofia sighed, "This whole arranged marriage thing. I have never met Hugo before. It's different for you, it sounds like you've known Cleo for a while. What is Hugo like?" She asked.

James smiled. "He's...nice. He can be rough at first when you meet him but I bet you'll soften him up a lot. He cares a lot about helping other people, He always gets worried when a teammate gets hurt. Oh yeah, He also plays flying derby with me! He is our captain and he plays ice hockey too. His older brother Axel is next in line for the throne so you'll just be a princess but it is a lot easier that way."

Sofia sighed, "I hope we get along. I don't know anything about flying derby or ice hockey."

James patted her shoulder. "I'll introduce you to him tomorrow at school. But now you should get some rest, school is going to be a long day."

Sofia nodded and got up, "Thank you James, and goodnight."

James smiled and waved goodnight, disappearing down the hall. Sofia wandered back to her room, her thoughts consumed with her engagement and school.

And that is the first chapter! I already have a ton of ideas for this story and I think I will end up updating this fairly quickly.

I basically have three other chapters finished or almost finished so I am super excited to write this story!

Hope you Enjoyed!
