Hello! Thank you for reading my story, it's my first one so please go easy on me~ I tried making the relationships and character development of Sera as believable as possible. Believe it or not, she's not a Mary Sue. I was so worried that she would end up a Mary Sue because of how powerful her quirk is, but I figured a way around that.
The first few chapters when she enters UA are filled with the dialogue I got from the manga, it helps with story flow so sorry about that. I also have a pairing in mind but I'm not too sure about writing romance. I'm worried I'll butcher the characters..so I'll have to see what the response is.
Sera will go through A LOT of character development, her personality throughout the story will change as she goes through different events. I hope you guys enjoy and please go easy on my grammar and stuff, I put it through 4 grammar checks before publishing. Hope you guys enjoy~
First Edit 07/09/20: I like this opening a lot better than the old one, I did some world building without realizing lol. Hope you guys enjoy it!
My Hero Academia does not belong to me!
WARNING: This novel contains mentions of trauma, gore, violence, mentions of suicide, and torture. If any of these things bother you read at your own discretion.

200 years ago the first quirk appeared in Qing Qing China.
With it came the beginning of the era of heroes and villains. The eternal battle between good and bad, light and dark.
Between the chaos of the Dark Eras as historians called it, one prominent hero rose from among its ashes.
Nakano Yura, the first person to be born with a healing quirk.
She spent the majority of her childhood hiding her powers, in fear of being captured and put into the containment camps that the rest of her quirked brethren were in. It was only after the rise of vigilantes around 25 years after the birth of the luminescent baby that she entered the scene. In the great massacre of 2084, she saved over 45 lives in one night.
Her quirk, Healing Light allowed her to heal people by gathering life energy from surrounding vegetation and use it to heal people. Because of the nature of her quirk and how many people she had saved, she became the first hero to be fully recognized by the world as a non-threat. Due to her good deeds and meer existence, she became a Symbol for quirk activist groups and is a prominent historical figure of the Dark Days.
Sadly, her death by assassination at the young age of 26 left the world in a rampage. Her killer was discovered to be Watanabe Ieshige, someone who was part of the anti-quirk groups that wanted quirked people contained and away from "normal" humans. With her death, many thought that the quirk activists would lose their symbol and give up, but instead, they fought even harder.
Nakano Yura had become a martyr and instead of a symbol of hope, she became a symbol for the cruelties of anti-quirk activists.
10 years after her death, her successor arose. Kang Soo-Yeon a 14-year-old girl who was discovered by the Quirk activist groups after saving her friend from a tragic bus accident. Her quirk, Painful Heal allowed her to heal injuries at the expense of feeling their pain.
After her discovery, she was quickly turned into the second symbol for the Quirk activist group. For the next few years, she would heal thousands of people with her quirk. Her existence once more became the fuel the quirked individuals needed in order to gain freedom and rights. Unfortunately 10 years after her discovery, Kang Soo-Yeon was discovered in her secure mansion overdosing on pain relievers.
Some believed in the unconfirmed testimonies of her therapist. That Kang Soo-Yeon had died because she was overworked and in so much pain because of her quirk that she could no longer handle it.
For the next 100 years, more people with healing quirks would arise, but many of them would fall soon after. Healing quirks were revered for their powers and usefulness, yet the users themselves have all died young.
Nowadays, even after the quirked have gained what they wanted and the quirkless are now the ones discriminated against, healing quirks are still in demand. Quirks have stunted technology after all, which is why the best solution is healing quirks.
The promises that come with it are still the same even after all these years. Use your power for the greater good, saving thousands of people, making lives better. If you don't want that then fame, money, and power are also part of the deal. Whatever you want will be handed to you, all you need to do is use your quirk and heal people.
They never tell you the consequences of accepting though.
What's the point of saving countless lives when you never get to live yours.

Our story begins like this:
Hideyoshi Sera is born on February 17th, at 5:00 o'clock in the morning in Daifuku Hospital.
Hiradaira Chisaki would say her daughter was a unique child. From the first few years after her birth until now, Sera was always too clever and intelligent for her own good. Too realistic, too pessimistic. She was never one to believe in pretty little lies adults told children.
Chisaki herself wouldn't say she wanted her daughter to be a hero, far from it actually. She wanted her daughter to be safe and protected, being a hero meant jumping in to danger which was a far cry from being safe or protected. But even as a child Chisaki had believed in the things that the world preached about heroism. It was only after she grew up and that rose-colored glasses were finally removed.
But her daughter seemed to have seen right through the false pretenses behind heroism the second it was introduced to her.
"Heroes die young." Had been Sera's response when asked by her pre-school teacher why she didn't want to be a hero. It had taken Chisaki 2 hours to convince that no she had no idea how Sera knew what death meant and neither she nor her husband held any hatred towards heroes.
When they came back home, both she and Tsumugu had asked Sera one more time if she wanted to be a hero. Chisaki would be lying if she said she didn't feel a weight lift off her shoulder when Sera said no.
She had only felt even more relieved when Sera's quirk finally showed itself.
Chisaki herself had a minor healing quirk. One that allowed her to heal simple scrapes and cuts, which though quite rare was weak enough that it wouldn't be turning any heads. Tsumugu, on the other hand, had an augmentation quirk. One that had been passed down for 7 generations in his family.
Neither of them had thought much of what quirk their child would have. The possibilities of what quirk a child could have with parents with a quirk like theirs had never entered their minds.
It was a surprise when they finally realized what Sera's quirk was.
The moment Sera succeeded in healing the gash on Chisaki's leg within seconds, she knew her daughter was meant for greater things, dangerous, but greater than she could ever imagine. A quirk that healed her, yet also allowed her to heal others. It was Chisaki's quirk alright, but much much stronger.
That night she told Tsumugu what happened and both of them put together the pieces and realized that their child had inherited a combination of their quirks. It was only after even more research on topics like genetic quirk lineages and quirk marriages that they both realized the extent of what Sera had inherited.
7 generations of augmentation quirks. All of which piled up and up until it combined with her own quirk to create Vitakinesis, the ability to control a person's health.
The name had taken them hours of research, but despite the terrifying meaning behind it, it was the only suitable one.
Some parents would be proud that their child had such a powerful quirk, one that would make her a prominent figure of society. Yet, even among the pride, she felt fear overshadowed it even more.
In the past 50 years, there have been over 20 notable heroes with healing quirks. Other than Recovery Girl, all of them were dead.
The world of heroes ate healers alive and sucked them dry until they died. History had many examples of it happening. After Kang Soo Yeon there was Lillian Fallow then there was Zheng Feng and many more after him.
Healing quirks were one of the foundational pillars of hero society, and it is because of that, that so many Heroes with healing quirks die. Healers usually lack physical strength, and rarely enter combat, due to this they cannot fight back against villain attacks.
Healers were the ones who ended up tortured, kidnapped, killed, brutally murdered, etc. The ones who though don't have a very flashy quirk yet possessed the rarest type of quirk. Quirks that they could pass onto their children. It is for that reason that the current healer of the world, Shuzenji Chiyo or Recovery Girl, never had any children.
Convincing Sera to not reveal her quirk had been easier then she expected. But, thinking again at her daughters' intelligence and paranoia it really shouldn't have been such a surprise. Her daughter was too smart to not realize the implications behind anyone finding out about her quirk.
Such a quirk was one that countless people would kill for. If she tried hard enough she would most likely be the most sought after hero doctor in the world.
But she would never let her daughter be a hero.
She was a citizen of Japan.
She was a respectable member of society.
She was a strict follower of the laws.
But above all else, she was a mother.
And she would rather go to hell for it than let her daughter into that lion's den.
.
.
Maybe it was due to some inborn survival instinct, but Sera was born paranoid.
Since she was little she had a basic concept of life or death engrained in her. Like all human beings, she was born. One day she would die. Further explanations of the concept had been pieced together after a conversation with her mom about what happened to ants after she crushed them.
It was why she realized that being a hero was so dangerous.
In order to not die one had to run away from danger.
Heroes on the other hand ran towards danger, which meant they had a greater chance of dying.
She might have been 4 years old when she came to this conclusion, but Sera knew she didn't want to die. Dying meant never seeing her parents again, it meant pain and a lot of blood which she wasn't very fond of.
The list of dangers that came with being a hero was a large waving red flag that she was sure to avoid.
Fame? Money? What was all of that worth when you end up dead before you hit 30? Heroics wasn't something she wanted to touch with a 20-foot pole.
The paranoia inside her only grew when her quirk awoke.
She had been too young at the time to realize the full extent of her power. But, long nights spent listening to her parents' hushed conversations, her mother's crying, and her father's incessant sighs allowed her to get a basic idea of what was happening.
Her quirk was dangerous.
Not in the sense that it would hurt her if she used it, but in the sense that she would be in danger if people found out she had the quirk.
It was because of this reason that for the next 10 years, Hideyoshi Sera had a minor regeneration quirk.
.
.
The day that she would later remember as the beginning of it all, started out normally enough.
Like always, she woke up at the crack of dawn.
The reason for this being that a side-effect of her quirk was that she needed little sleep to function. Which meant she could sleep for 3 hours and wake up as if she had slept the entire night.
Every morning she would wake up and brush her teeth, change into some more practical clothes, and start making breakfast for herself and for her parents when they woke up. After that, she would make three Bentos.
After having her "great realization" as she called it, she had decided the best way to avoid hero work was to have a job that had nothing to do with it. Some research and a bit of parental counceling later, she came upon the perfect occupation.
A nutritionist.
It wasn't as conspicuous as being a doctor, and it was well-suited enough with her quirk that it would give her an advantage among others. Both of her parents had been a bit disappointed that Sera hadn't decided to join the business field but their worries were washed away when she learned to cook.
She had always been someone who liked to plan out each step of her life. So after she had decided to become a nutritionist she had started to learn everything she could about cooking and having a healthy lifestyle She had come a long way in the 9 years that she had begun learning. Now, she could confidently say that her cooking skills were superb.
After she finished the final bento box, she checked the clock to see that it was already 7:00. School started at 8:45 so she had more than enough time to finish breakfast and change into her uniform.
Sitting down, she quietly ate a simple breakfast of rice, miso soup, and some fried fish. She loved the quietness of early mornings like this. It made her feel serene and at peace as the soft light of the morning sun shone through the windows and brightened the room.
By the time she was done and all the dishes were washed, it was almost 8:00. Taking off her apron, she hangs it on one of the hooks attached to the pantry door. Pulling the sleeves of her shirt down, she makes her way up to her room.
Changing into her uniform, she straightens her long hair a bit by running her fingers through it. She had been both blessed and cursed by having a lot of hair, meaning it was always a pain to wash and yet beautiful to look at.
Giving herself another once over in the mirror and deeming herself ready, she grabs her school bag and heads downstairs.
Her parents by that time, have awoken and started getting ready to head to work. She puts her shoes on, and grabs her keys, checking that she had everything she turned around to say her goodbyes.
"Bye, mom! Bye, dad! Love you!"
She can hear their muffled replies in response and quickly leaves the house.
Heading to school she takes in a deep breath and smells the cool winter air. It was early January and though the snow from last year had already melted, the air still had a cold crisp tinged to it that she loved.
.
.
When she entered her classroom, she quickly walked over to her desk and sat down. Listening to the mindless chattering of her classmate she makes out some bits of their conversations. Mostly surrounding the UA entrance exam that was coming up next month.
She really didn't get what the fuss was about UA. Sure most of the students there would all become great and powerful heroes, but from what she knew about their previous exams, they focused on power type quirks instead of the more obscure ones. She knew a senior last year that had a quirk that allowed him to sense if people were in danger. If that wasn't a heroic quirk she didn't know what was.
"Sera-chan, what school are you applying to?" Her seatmate, Harune Ichigo asks.
Sera is pretty close to most of the people in class. The healing aura that naturally radiated off of her made them feel comforted and at peace whenever they were near her. It was why no one that was in her class ever got sick, even during flu season.
"Ah, I'm applying to Kunugigaoka."
Ichigo lets out a surprised sound at her answer, "Kunugigaoka? Isn't it that one elite high school for doctors and lawyers and stuff?"
Sera gives her a nod in reply and Ichigo gives her a confused look, "You're not applying to a hero school?"
Sera laughs at that, "Why would I apply to Hero school, my quirk isn't very heroic." Well on paper it wasn't, "Anyways hero work requires too much exercise and I'm just not into that."
"You're always so lazy Sera-chan, but I do get envious of your quirk sometimes." Ichigo comments as she rests her face on her palm, "You can eat as much as you want and your quirk will keep you in perfect shape!"
Leaning back in her chair Sera plays with the pencil on her desk, "Well, it's one of the better parts of my quirk. At least you won't ever be hot during summer or cold during winter."
Ichigo had a quirk that allowed her to regulate her inner body temperature at will. It meant she would never have to overheat during summer and freeze during winter.
"I guess you're right, but I'm still envious!"
The girls would then chat some more before the teacher arrived to begin their lesson. Sera absentmindedly listened as her teacher droned on and on about vectors and force and whatnot.
.
.
Time continued on at a fast pace, and by the end of the school day, she was ready to head home.
Walking down the street she thought of what she should make for dinner. Her parents were going on a business trip tonight, so they won't be coming back for at least a week. Leaving her with the house all to herself.
'I should make some ramen or maybe udon. I'm craving both.'
Suddenly she paused as she remembered that there was no more milk in the fridge. She had stayed behind to help sort some papers for her teacher so it was already 6 pm. It was winter, so the sun was quickly setting and soon it would be dark.
Usually, these reasons would be enough to steer her away from going. Because one she was scared of the dark, and two she was scared of encountering something shady. After all the movies don't lie when they say most crimes happen in the evening in dark shady alleys. However, she was really craving milk, and if there was one thing that could beat her laziness— it was her stomach.
So she decided to take a detour and head off to the convenience store a few blocks away to buy some milk.
That should have been her first red flag.
"That will be 875 yen miss."
'Aish, the cost of food is so expensive nowadays.' She thought as she handed the cashier the money.
Holding the bag with her gallon of milk in it, she slowly dragged herself out of the store. The store was a few blocks away, but since her school bag was quite heavy she had taken her sweet time getting there. By the time she left it was already nearing 7. The sun had already set a few minutes ago, and the sky was dark with stars starting to slowly appear.
Walking home silently she occasionally looked around at the buildings and noticed the lack of people around her. Biting back a curse she quickened her pace a bit more, silently hoping to get home quickly.
'I swear to the gods above this is the opening scene of a horror movie.' Her many years of anime watching had sharpened her skills enough that she knew when something bad was going to happen. She wanted to regret her decision to go and buy milk, but couldn't.
Passing by a small almost unnoticeable alleyway she hears a soft but still audible groan. Feeling a chill come up her spine she slowly turns her neck over to where she hears the sound. She chokes back a scream as she sees the skeleton-like man laying on the ground.
'Holy shit! There's an unconscious man injured in an alley!"
'Villain.' Is what she immediately thinks as she stares at the blonde-haired man, her grip tightening on the plastic bag in her hand. Slowly she takes a slow step back, distancing herself from the strange man in front of her.
'But, what if this guy is just some poor guy who got injured and mugged by a villain?' She thinks as she stares at him. His blonde hair was matted and dry, which meant he probably had some sort of vitamin deficiency.
'This is none of my business.' She decides, 'Some heroes will probably find him while on patrol or something.'
She definitely can't help him. After all, if she gets caught using her quirk she would be in trouble. People will find out and then they'll ask questions, and if they find out what her quirk will do they'll lock her in a lab and do heinous experiments on her.
'But what if he dies?' A small voice in the back of her mind says.
Her jaw clenches and her steps waver a bit, 'Who cares if he dies! What if I die?! If I save him I might get kidnapped by villains when they find out about my quirk and then they'll probably kill me after draining my blood!'
If her mother were here, she would definitely shake her head and tell Sera to just call the ambulance. But her mother wasn't here, she was currently in New York probably sweet talking executive into signing a contract that would make her lots of money.
'But, he's unconscious. No one will know, there aren't any cameras in the alley. Be a good person!'
Her steps paused, and she stands in place for a few moments. Taking a deep breath she clenches her fist in frustration.
'Fuck it, this could be my good deed of the decade.' Is her last thought before she turns back and rushes back into the alley. Giving a silent prayer to all the gods above that she doesn't regret this decision.
Slowly approaching the man she stares at him and is even more shocked at how pale and incredibly bony he was. Getting a closer look at him causes her quirk to be triggered and information is quickly processed into her mind.

"How is this guy even alive." She whispers as her mind processed the information her quirk gave her.
This guy had the worst injuries she had ever seen before in her 15 years of living. Not that she had seen many, but that's beside the point.
She quickly places her milk onto the floor before rushing over to him, her hands glowing in a green light as she prods at his injury. She pondered over his strange quirk as she healed him. Someone whose quirk didn't have his DNA? Did the quirk not belong to him? Was this guy part of some weird science experiment?
A plan begins to form in her mind as she sees his injuries, the years of reading countless medical books finally proving its worth. Lifting up the man's shirt she quickly uses her quirk to seal up the ends of the bleeding blood vessels and sends the blood through the wound. She then starts working on the lungs.
Seeing the blood in his lungs she quickly brings it up through his airways and lets it exit through his mouth before splattering it onto the ground. Sweat appears on the back of her neck as she heals the trauma done to his lungs. She didn't know whether to be amazed or horrified at the damage to his lungs, they were a mangled mess of scarred tissue and dead cells.
As she slowly guided air into his lungs to see if they worked any better, she was glad to hear that his breathing seemed less raspy and more clear. She then thought of his stomach— though she could heal it, it would be way too obvious that someone with a powerful healing quirk healed him. She had to take some precautions at least.
Focusing on it she slowly healed the giant bruise that had formed there and sealed up the scar tissue. She didn't know how long she had been kneeling beside the man for, but that thought had completely left her mind as she healed him.
A few minutes later, seeing the bleeding had finally stopped, she once again checked over his injuries.
Injuries:
Missing stomach (CRITICAL INJURY MUST BE TREATED)
A large wound on the left side of the Stomach (approximately 4 ¼ inches in diameter) (Not critical)
Age of Injury: ~ 5 years
Survival Length Currently: 2-3 years
Letting out a relieved sigh she wiped the sweat of her forehead before lifting herself up. Walking over to a nearby phone booth, she leans into the glass feeling the exhaustion of using her quirk take over. Putting in the needed money she dialed the number needed and slowly waited for someone to pick up.
"Hello, this is the Musutafu Police Station, what is your emergency?"
"There's an unconscious man in an alleyway near Raibo Supermarket, he looks like he's injured.."
"Do you see if he has any particular injuries?"
"I don't know, there was blood on the ground though. I think he was attacked by a villain."
"I see, thank you for reporting this ma'am have a good night."
"Thank you, you too."
Ending the call and thanking the gods for efficient villain attack call services, she made her way back to the man and picked up her milk. Giving him one last look before walking away.

Toshinori Yagi woke up to the smell of a hospital room. For the last 5 years, this type of thing had been a common occurrence. With the time in between each visit getting shorter and shorter.
Sitting up on the hospital bed he remembers the events of the day before. He had been in his muscle form heading back to his house from a training session with young Midoriya when his wound acted up. Knowing he couldn't transform in front of a crowd he had jumped into a secluded alleyway. When his transformation happened, his vision had gotten blurry and he felt the blood come up his throat. After that, his vision went black and he collapsed.
"Yagi-san, you're awake." He hears a voice say, looking up he sees a nurse staring at him.
"Yagi-san, we received a call at 7 pm yesterday from a woman about finding an injured man in an alley. When we arrived we discovered the big injury on your stomach, due to its age we assume you've already known that an injury of such size can no longer be treated. We believe you only collapsed due to fatigue and nothing more, after a brief checkup you can head to the front desk to check out."
"I collapsed due to fatigue?" He confusedly asked.
"Yes, when we gave you a checkup nothing was particularly wrong other than the wound on your side. You didn't even have internal bleeding or any blood in your lungs. So it was just fatigue. The woman did mention some blood on the ground, but it probably was from someone else."
The nurse then proceeded to check his breathing and heart rate before deeming him ready to leave. Toshinori was still confused at her words, what did she mean by he had only collapsed due to fatigue he was sure he had another relapse from his wound. He had even felt the blood come up his throat before he had collapsed.
He better ask Recovery Girl to look over his wound.
.
.
"Toshinori, what the hell happened to your body?!" In all her years of being a hero doctor, she had never seen such a baffling medical chart. An injury as old as five years had recovered by over 30% in one night, and this just wasn't any old injury. It was an injury that had cost its victim his stomach and parts of his lungs.
Toshinori Yagi, the victim of said injury, was also confused himself. "I genuinely have no idea Chiyo-san, I had collapsed from overexerting myself too much as All Might and then I woke up in a hospital. The nurse had told me someone called the police about seeing me collapsed in an alleyway and that was how they found me."
Nedzu the principal of UA Highschool who had been observing on the sideline finally spoke up, "Doesn't that mean that someone healed you?"
Both Toshinori and Recovery Girl widened their eyes in shock.
"It could be possible," Recovery Girl states, "But, I have never heard of a healing quirk that was that powerful. Even my own healing quirk could not heal Toshinori's injury to such an extent."
Nedzu ponders for a few moments, "I will get the security cameras checked around the area, and see if anyone matches the description that the nurse gave you." He stands up and pats Toshinori's hand in comfort, "We will also see if we can get the police recording from that night so we can match their voice."
Toshinori Yagi himself didn't really know what to make of this new information. He had been dealing with this injury for 5 years already and had long ago resigned to the fact that he would never be healed. Yet, somehow out of the blue, there might be someone who could save him.
.
.
The three days after she saves the man in the alley she is constantly on edge and wary of everyone she meets.
She had never gone out of her way to save people, and after the events of that night, she had even questioned her sanity at that moment. Who the heck saves some random skeleton man they find in an alleyway?! She had definitly been out of her mind! Her mother would have her head on a chopping block if she found out.
She wouldn't blame her though, she too would have loved to wring her past self's neck if she could.
By the end of the week though, after hours of pacing and conspiracy theories her anxiety and fear had slowly simmered down. If anyone had found out about her quirk wouldn't they have already kidnapped her by now, right?
The guy was probably long gone and had moved on with his life. Right?
It would only be bad for her health to linger on it any longer. So for the next few days, she relaxed herself and let the events of that night leave her mind.
Unfortunately for her, one Saturday afternoon, 10 days after she had saved the man in the alley, her doorbell rang.
She freezes midway through beating her egg whites, and she can feel her face pale.
She doesn't have friends that visit her house randomly. She liked her peace and quiet too much to have friends over. Neither did she order any food or have any package arriving. Her parents were also on their business trip and wouldn't be coming back until the end of the month.
Which could only mean, one the mailman had decided to ring her doorbell. Or two, some poor pizza delivery guy got lost and decided to ring her doorbell out of all people.
She tries calming herself, taking in a deep breathe, yet making sure she didn't make any extra noise to not alert the people outside of her presence.
After some moments of silence, she decides to ignore it. Hoping that whoever the hell was outside would leave her alone. Unfortunately, the doorbell continued to ring a second and third time, causing her to have more near panic attacks at whoever was outside. She was pretty sure if she didn't open it they were going to knock her door down.
But when silence resumes and the fourth ring isn't heard she lets out a breath. Still feeling paranoid, she walks towards the door as quietly as possible to check if they had left.
Upon looking through the peephole on her door she is scared stiff to see that, no, they had in fact not left.
Instead they were looking right up at her, through the hole as if they knew she was looking at them. A giant white mouse, a tall man, a very short old lady, and worse of all, the skeleton man she saved that night.
Seeing the pale-faced, gaunt-looking man she can feel all the blood leaving her face.
'It's fine, I just have to pretend I'm not home or anything. After a few more minutes they'll leave.'
Unfortunately for her the people outside have discovered that she was behind the door.
"Ms. Hideyoshi, please open the door." She hears one of the people outside say, "We are not here to harm you in any way. If you would like we can show you proper licenses."
She wants to scream, and shout at them to leave. But, the tall guy looks like he's part of the police and she might be under their radar if she doesn't let them in.
Weighing her possible choices, she realizes the best choice was to let them in. Taking a few deep breaths, she feels some color returning to her face. Realizing she had no other choice she slowly unlocked the door and opened it as little as she could. Peeking through the small crevice she narrows her eyes at the group of four.
Seeing her, the tall man immediately shows her a police license. Staring at the man in the picture and the man in front of her house, she can see they are the same person. Glancing a few more times at the license she tries to find any evidence that it was forged but finds none.
Giving a relented sigh, she releases the chain door guard and opens the door.
"Please come in."
I wonder if you guys noticed my references?
BTW I originally came up with the idea all the way back in 2018 but I never got around to writing chapter 1. But somehow 2 weeks ago I was hit with so much inspiration that I wrote 18 chapters. I just sat in a chair and wrote around 2-3 chapters every day.
