Haikyuu: Baking with the idiots
I do not own red hood and the outlaws.
It all started when Hinata said to Kageyama that they should do something nice for Yachi since she helped them with practise and their exams. They learned she liked cake since she and Kiyoko talked about the tasty cake they had at a cafe. There was only one problem. Neither Hinata nor Kageyama can bake. So they asked Yamaguchi for help and he gave in. Now the three of them are standing in Kageyama's kitchen accompanied by all the stuff they brought to bake. They went to Kageyama's house because his house is the closets and his parents weren't home today.
''I don't understand why we couldn't just buy her a cake. It would be much easier.'' Kageyama says.
Hinata rolls his eyes. ''Because that would be too easy and not special at all!''
''Soo...why am I here again?'' Yamaguchi points at himself.
''Because neither me and Kageyama can bake.'' Hinata answers as he searches the kitchen cabinets for a bowl.
''You realise I have never baked before either right?''
Hinata shrugs. ''You are smarter than me and Kageyama and Tsukishima disappeared before I could invite him along.''
Yamaguchi swallows. He hopes he didn't make a big mistake by deciding to help them out. He can swear he can hear Tsukishima laughing at him from wherever his childhood friend is at this moment.
''I can look up a recipe on the internet?'' Yamaguchi proposes.
''That sound like a good idea.'' Hinata nods and finally finds a bowl in the cabinets. But he cannot reach it. He plans on climbing on the counter but before he can Kageyama takes the bowl from the shelve and puts it in front of Hinata while he grins and Hinata scowls.
''I could have gotten that myself.'' Hinata grumbles.
''Sure.'' Kageyama responds.
''All right let me see.'' Yamaguchi mutters as he looks on his phone. ''First we need to preheat the oven and gather the ingredients. We need to cream the butter and sugar.''
Hinata takes the sugar and throws it into the bowl. Kageyama takes the butter from the fridge and eyes it. ''Do I just throw it in the bowl?''
''I remember my mother once baking a cake and cutting it in little pieces.'' Hinata notes.
''Couldn't you have asked your mother to help us?'' Kageyama asks as he takes a knife and cuts the butter in little pieces and puts the small pieces of butter in the bowl.
Hinata shakes his head. ''She has to work.''
''Now we need to put the eggs and the vanilla in it.'' Yamaguchi reads aloud.
Hinata takes out an egg and hits it on the bowl until there is a crack in the shell. He then puts some force on it until it breaks and puts the egg in the bowl, only a few parts of the eggshell also fall in it.
''No!'' Hinata tries to get them out of the bowl with his hands but he can't get them.
''You idiot!'' Kageyama scolds him.
''Maybe use a spoon?'' Yamaguchi offers and Kageyama hands Hinata a spoon. It works.
''Now we need to stir in the cake flour.'' Yamaguchi reads. Kageyama takes out the mixer as Hinata puts the flour in the bowl but when they set it on the flour goes everywhere because of the mixer. It swings the light flour out of the bowl onto the whole kitchen counter and their clothing.
''Ugh.'' They groan.
''Maybe we should first stir it with a spoon so that everything is a little bit more mixed and it won't be easily flung out of the bowl by the mixer. '' Kageyama proposes and Hinata takes a spoon and stirs the flour, eggs, vanilla and sugar together. They then continue to mix it even further with the mixer.
''How long are we supposed to mix it?'' Hinata asks.
''Until it is light, fluffy and creamy.'' Yamaguchi responds.
''Great does is also say what light, fluffy and creamy looks like?'' Kageyama sounds annoyed.
''I think it should be good enough now. We have been mixing it for a while now.'' Yamaguchi replies.
Hinata takes the bowl and pours the batter into the baking pan. He fills the pan until the batter reaches the edges of the pan. They then put it in the oven. When they check on the cake an hour and fifteen minutes later the batter has overflown and is everywhere.
''What?'' Hinata exclaims.
''We must have done something wrong.'' Yamaguchi says.
''What we do now?'' Kageyama asks.
''We try again.'' Hinata says determined as he walks towards the fridge and pulls out some more butter and eggs. ''Me and Kageyama will mix the ingredients again and you need to figure out what went wrong.'' He addresses Yamaguchi who nods.
While Hinata and Kageyama put the ingredients in the bowl again and stir, Yamaguchi searches the internet for answers.
''Okay what we did wrong was filling the whole cake pan. You must never fill a cake pan any higher than 2/3 of the way. If the cake pan is too full they will flow over.'' Yamaguchi says as he has found their mistake. They now follow that guideline and put the cake pan in the oven again. This time when they take it out an hour and fifteen minutes later it looks good. They let it cool down for a while but when they want to try and take the cake out of the pan it doesn't move. It is stuck. No matter how hard Hinata or Kageyama shake the pan the cake stays stuck in it. In the end they try to cut it out but the result is not that pretty. The bottom of the cake is burned and it looks ugly.
''Let's try it another time.'' Yamaguchi suggests and they repeat the whole progress again.
''We need to use butter to grease a cake pan but we can also use parchment paper.'' Yamaguchi reads from his phone. ''That is what we forgot.''
''Do we have parchment paper?'' Hinata asks and Kageyama nods as he takes it out of a kitchen cabinet. Hinata takes it and squashes a rectangular piece of parchment paper into the round cake pan. This time when they take out the cake after an hour and fifteen minutes and they take the cake out of the cake pan, the batter flows everywhere even though the top of the cake looked good. It wasn't overly cooked yet apparently.
''What did we do wrong now?'' Hinata shouts in frustration. Yamaguchi takes his phone out again to figure it out while Hinata throws their failed cake into the trash.
''Try again?'' Kageyama sighs. He doesn't want to give up before they succeed.
Hinata nods. ''We won't stop until we nailed it.'' Something flashes into his eyes and Yamaguchi thinks this is going to be a long day. He can really hear Tsukishima laughing at him.
''I got what we did wrong.'' Yamaguchi begins. ''We were supposed to cut a circle to fit the bottom of the cake pan. Now we had all these folds of paper that trapped the cake batter. We should also stick a little wood skewer in the cake and check if it is dry or wet to see if the cake is ready.''
''Let's try this again.'' Hinata says as he ignores Kageyama's glare since Hinata was the one who put the paper in the pan.
''There is no more sugar in this bag do we have any more?'' Kageyama throws the empty sugar bag they bought in the trashcan.
''I think this is sugar.'' Hinata says as he points at some white stuff in a see-through container. He picks it up and throws some of it in the bowl. They then cream the butter and sugar and add the eggs, vanilla and flour and then stir it. They put the parchment paper in the cake pan the right way and then pour the batter in it. After that they put the cake in the oven again. After an hour and fifteen minutes they take the cake out and check it with a wood skewer. It is dry and so the cake is done. They let it cool down for a while before taking it out of the pan. Everything goes well.
''Finally we are done!'' Hinata shouts and Yamaguchi and Kageyama nod in agreement.
''I hope Yachi enjoys it. '' Yamaguchi says and he stretches his arms.
Kageyama proceeds to cut a piece of cake.
''Why are you doing that?'' Hinata asks.
''To test.'' Kageyama responds.
''That is a good idea.'' Yamaguchi says. The three of them taste the cake at the same time. They also spit it out at the same time.
''Ugh.''
''So salty!''
''That white stuff must have been salt instead of sugar.'' Yamaguchi deduces and goes to fill a glass of water to drink.
''You idiot!'' Kageyama shouts at Hinata.
''I am sorry!'' He apologizes. ''Why is baking a cake so hard?'' Hinata asks no one in particular.
''I don't know.'' Yamaguchi responds as he also hands them a glass of water.
''Aren't you supposed to be smart?'' Hinata responds.
''Not that smart. You should have asked Tsukishima or maybe one of the senpai's.''
''We didn't want to bother them.'' Hinata confesses.
''I am sure they wouldn't mind.'' Yamaguchi says. He eyes the salty cake. '' ''So you guys wanna try again?''
''Do we even have enough flour left?'' Kageyama raises an eyebrow.
''No but we do have those baking mixtures for baking a cake we also bought from the supermarket. We only need to use butter, milk and eggs.'' Hinata takes the mixture from their shopping bag and opens it. They follow the instruction on the packaging. Everything goes well even though when using the mixer cake batter still goes everywhere. In the time the cake is in the oven they decide to clean the kitchen up because it is a mess. They begin by throwing away all the packaging of the stuff they have used. But they lose track of the time.
''What time did we put the cake in the oven again?'' Hinata wonders.
''Oh no.'' Yamaguchi says as he opens the oven and takes the cake out. It is very burned. They all groan in frustration. Yamaguchi looks around the kitchen. They do not have any eggs anymore or butter and it won't be long before practise starts.
''I think it is time we gave up.'' He mutters.
''No.'' Hinata responds. ''We still have one option.'' He grabs another baking mixture from their shopping bag.
''We don't have any flour, eggs or butter anymore.'' Kageyama says. ''We also do not have enough time to get them before our practise starts.''
Hinata ignores him as he opens the packaging and takes out the bag of cake batter. ''But we don't need any of that if we use this.'' He continues. ''Yamaguchi you put some of the parchment paper in the cake pan, Kageyama give me 150 ml water. We only need to mix the cake mixture from this bag with the water and then put it in the oven. Even we cannot mess this up.'' They do as Hinata says and put the cake in the oven. This time they do watch the clock very closely. The cake is done just in time before they have to leave towards the gym for practise. They put the cake in a container and take it with them. When practise is done the three of them walk towards Yachi. She looks surprised as she gets a cake shoved into her face.
''Wow.'' Yachi begins as he gently moves the cake a little farther from her face. ''You guys made me a cake.''
''To thank you for helping us!'' Hinata explains with a big grin on his face and Kageyama nods.
''Thank you guys so much you didn't have to.'' She says as she smiles.
Author's note
Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy it. I once had this idea about baking and had written in for another fanfic of mine for another fandom but I thought it fitted haikyuu too and decided to rewrite that chapter to make it fit. The original was chapter 17 from my fanfiction kiss.

Tsukishima: ''So you survived baking with the idiots?''
Yamaguchi: *Glares at Tsukishima but then sighs*
Yamaguchi: ''I did but I am not sure Kageyama's kitchen did.
Tsukishima: ''Haha.''
Yamaguchi: ''You could have warned me you know.''
Tsukishima: ''Knowing those two idiots you should have seen it coming. At least in the end you ended up with a cake they could give to Yachi.''
Yamaguchi: ''Yeah but I have seen enough cake for years.''
Tsukishima: ''Really? Just when I wanted to treat you to some as a thank you for your hard work with those idiots.''
Yamaguchi: ''I will throw this water bottle in your face.''
