* Work meeting. *

She walked in the big building, her cellphone resting between her shoulder and her ear as she spoke.

"No, Jo, I... No, don't even think about it!" she told her sister who was on the other end of the conversation. They had been talking about her love life all the way from the car to the school.

"Well, why not?" her sister asked.

"Because I don't need to date anyone at the moment." she said as she tied her long, brown hair in a ponytail. She had barely had had time to get fully ready this morning. She had put on a long, green, flowery skirt, a white blouse and black ballerinas, and she had barely applied some make up. She did intend to look nice in her first day, but it had been a busy morning after all.

"It's been years since you had a date." her sister said.

"It's been months. And it lasted the same as always: two dates, no more calls. So, no, Jo. I don't care if this guy you work with is decent and is on his way to a Nobel Prize. The answer is still no." she told her sister. She loved Jo dearly, but she could be very insistent when she wanted to. As she turned around the corner, she walked in to someone, causing her to drop her books and her cellphone. "I'm so sorry! It's all my fault. I wasn't looking." she said as she and the other person kneeled down and started to pick up her book.

"Meg? Meg March?" a deep voice asked. She looked up to meet the pair of starry blue eyes of a smiling guy with curly auburn hair.

"Yes?" she asked, confused, as he handed in her books.

"John Brooke? Laurie Laurence's tutor?" he asked as they stood up. Meg sighed and smiled.

"John! Right! It's... thank you! How are you?" she asked, taking her books from him.

"Good. Pretty good. You?" he asked. He was wearing a white shirt and black trousers.

"Good." she said, nodding her head.

"What are you doing here?" he asked.

"Work. I'm substituting for Ms. King in first form. You?" she asked.

"Teaching Literature and History in 5th." he said with a broad smile on his face. Meg remembered that smile from her teenage years. She had always liked it. He had been kind to her and her sisters whenever they went to the Laurence's for tea or weekends. She remembered having a crush on him when she was younger, but then Laurie graduated, she was off to college, and she never saw him again... until now. John had always liked her. Practically since the first time he saw her. But since he was two years older than her, he had always thought she wouldn't go for it. She was the prettiest girl he'd ever seen and after her and Laurie's graduations, he thought he'd never see her turn into a woman... until now.

They were staring at each other in silence, smiling, until...

"Meg? Are you still there?" they heard from the floor. That's when Meg realized that her phone was still on the floor and that her sister had probably heard the whole conversation. She instantly picked it up.

"Jo, I have to go now. I'll call you later, alright?" she said

"Sure. Good luck on your first day!" her sister said, then hung up. Meg put her phone in her bag.

"I'll walk you to your classroom?" John asked. Meg smiled and nodded him. "How long are you substituting for?" he asked.

"Until May, apparently." she answered. He nodded and smiled as they stopped at the door of a big and colorful classroom.

"So... this is you." he said, pointing at the classroom. Meg just smiled.

"Thanks for walking with me. I..." she said before the bell rang and kids from all ages started running down the hallways.

"See you around? Maybe coffee some time?" he asked with a smile as he started walking to his classroom.

She smiled back and nodded as little kids walked in her classroom. Her first day was already a bright one at this new place.

Hello! As you can see, this is my first attempt at a Little Women fanfic. I really like th book, and the new movie and some other modern retellings inspired me to write this. I hope you like it. This is just the first chapter of some. Any comments, suggestions, ideas, are more than welcome.
