Chapter 1: Mission Birthday Surprise

Daniel sat at his desk wondering how he was going to celebrate Betty's birthday in just a few days. He had hoped to do something special for her, but with her being in London, and him being here in New York he wasn't sure what he could do.

He knew how busy she was and didn't want to get in her way, but he missed her so freaking much.

He truly felt like the sun was dimmed whenever she wasn't around. And when she was across the ocean, he literally wanted to forget the whole world and cross whatever obstacles were in his way.

He was tempted to ditch everything here to go there, but there was a lot he had to take care of. He picked up his phone and decided to text her. He missed her.

Hey Betty

You took all the sunshine when you left.

He smiled when he got her text soon after.

Daniel, don't be silly. You have plenty of sunshine. I'm the one who is missing it all!

Just as he was about to respond he got another text and grinned, his heart expanding as he read it. I miss you like crazy, Daniel! I'm tempted to hop on the next flight over!

He quickly responded.

You won't get any arguments from me. I miss you, too. Please come back!

He got her response and laughed as he read her message. You're acting like I left you. Then got one right after.

You know I had to be over here, but … I sort of have bad news...

He waited nervously, unsure what to expect, and got more worried as it took her a few minutes to text back again.

He sighed as he read her message.

There are complications here, and it looks like I might have to be here for another month or two. I don't know what to do. I don't want to be away from you any longer, but I need to be here. Mr Dunne needs me.

He frowned as he responded. I understand. Can I call you? I really need to hear your voice.

He got her text shortly after. I'm actually in a meeting but I couldn't focus because I was thinking about you, and then got your text. I'll call you after my next meeting is finished. I can't wait to hear YOUR voice!

He smiled as he texted her. No problem, sweetie. Can't wait!

He beamed when he got her response. It had about several dozen smiley kiss emojis. He chuckled. Damn, his Betty was so cute. He couldn't wait to hear her voice. It was the only thing that got him through the distance between them.

He was about to start working on his laptop when he heard the next greatest sound from his other favorite girl. "Daddy!"

He beamed when he saw his princess run in with her aunt following behind. He quickly got up as she jumped into his arms "my sweet princess, I was missing you"

She giggled "I was only gone for 3 hours!"

He chuckled as he hugged her tighter before letting her down "yes, but you know how much I miss you even after a minute."

She laughed. Hilda shook her head with a smile, "I don't mind keeping Isabelle if you still need to work?"

He shook his head "no, I'd like her here. I miss Betty, so at least with Belle here I feel closer to her"

Hilda nodded "I know. I miss her too."

"I miss mommy, too!" Isabelle stated. Daniel laughed as he hugged her to his side, while Hilda smiled at them. "Has she said when she'll be back?"

Daniel sighed "sounds like she is going to be there longer"

Hilda placed her hand on his shoulder. Daniel picked up Isabelle "I at least have my princess. Betty is by herself dealing with everything and now she has to be there longer."

"Let me know if you need anything or if you need Isabelle to stay with us. You know we don't mind" Hilda said with a smile leaning over to place a quick to her cheek. Isabelle smiled bright "I love staying at Aunty Hilda's house and playing with Rosie, daddy"

He smiled "Yah, I know princess. We'll see ok?"

She hugged him and Hilda smiled "Alright, see you two later. Let me know what happens with Betty. I can barely get a hold of her."

He nodded "Tell me about it! It seems like the only time I get to talk to her is when she gets home or right before she leaves for work."

She gave him a warm smile, and then hugged Isabelle before she left.

Daniel looked to Belle with a smile "wanna be my partner in crime today?"

She giggled "mhm"

He grinned, hugging her tight before plopping her into the chair in front of his desk. He felt so lucky to have his princess here. He really felt bad for Betty being in London all alone. He was more than tempted to drop everything to go over there for her. Again.

He sighed. "Daddy, are you sad mommy's not home?"

He nodded "yes princess. I feel like part of my heart is gone."

She nodded slowly, obviously thinking about his words. "Me too. I love mommy with my whooooole heart."

He smiled "Yah, exactly. What are we gonna do, princess? Your mom's birthday is in a few days.

"Can't we see her?"

He sighed "I wish it was that easy, princess. Your mom is on the other side of the ocean, remember?"

She nodded "mhm, Atlantis!"

He chuckled "Atlantic"

"Oh, oops!" She snickered at her mix up and he felt his heart lift hearing her sweet laugh. He realized what Betty meant about him having the sunshine. She meant Isabelle.

No matter how much time passed, he was still awed that he was married to Betty, his best friend and the love of his life, and they had their sweet princess. He had been married to Betty for seven and a half years and Isabelle just turned six a couple months ago. He felt like he had everything he could ever want in life.

He looked at the picture frame on his desk that held a selfie they took at the park of the three of them. His smile got bigger. That had to be his favorite picture.

Along with a special one of him and Betty on their wedding day.
He couldn't believe the amazing family he created with the love of his life.

He just had to do something special to show Betty how truly loved she was and that he did actually remember her birthday. He couldn't imagine his life without her.

"Hmm… Princess, how would you like to help me on the most epic mission ever?"

She nodded enthusiastically "Oo, yes!"

He grinned "Mission Birthday Surprise"
