AN: Looking back at what I had written years ago, I had to admit to myself, my writing was a bit… s**t. So I decided to rewrite this little piece and hopefully improve on areas that were just a jumbled mess. Hope you enjoy this rewrite of Alternate Reality: Sea Spirit!
Deep beneath the depths of the sea that bordered the ever bustling city of Domino, the sunlight glimmered, bringing light to the colorful underwater world that housed many marine life, both large and small and plethora of dazzling and entrancing colors. It was a perfect summer afternoon for one Mokuba Kaiba as he swam along the sea floor, a brown waterproof bag strapped to his shoulder, which carried a small collection of shells. It had been a year or so since he was caught up in one of the gang's fights, which involved a sinister ringmaster named Yingya, whom held the Seto Kaiba's young brother hostage and turned him into one of his freaks. In retaliation for the gang's intrusion, Yingya had used his magic to turn Mokuba back to normal... but not without one last trick up his sleeve and almost killed the little boy.
However, his drowning had been thwarted by Kaiba when he used his own powers to transfer the magic of the ringmaster to his kid brother, in turn saving his life and granting him powers of water. Now here he was, exploring the sea, each breath of water flowing like fresh air to his lungs. After their last adventure, Mokuba wanted to experiment and test himself with his new abilities by going to training sessions with Yugi and his friends. So with great reluctance, the CEO of Kaiba Corp. let him do so and went along, just to make sure his brother didn't get hurt (Not that Yugi would allow such a thing, but he had to be sure).
Right now, it was an off day for the group, wanting to enjoy the sun and time away from school. Above him on the sands and shallow waters, Tea would be sunning herself on a towel while Joey and Tristan played around in the waves. Bakura and Yugi would be talking about things, like how they could use their powers for other means, while Spencer, Yuri and Kaiba would be relaxing in chairs beneath large umbrellas, the dragon stone user (only dressed in a white tank top and light blue swim trunks) reading a novel while Yuri and Spencer were both just enjoying the breeze, eyes closed in peaceful expression.
"Hey, Kaiba! I thought we came ta da beach ta have fun, not sit 'round and read!" Joey yelled out.
Kaiba glanced up to the blonde over the top of his book. "What I do is my business, Wheeler," he spoke with a slight tone of annoyance before going back to the page he was on. How did he get dragged along for this anyway? 'Oh right.. Mokuba..' he added mentally with an inward sigh. But he didn't want to upset him by refusing. Speaking of his little brother, he looked up again after a few more minutes towards the water. 'I better make sure he's alright.' He would mark his spot and placed his book down before taking off his shirt.
Spencer opened one eye, hearing the brunette male move from his chair. "Finally going swimming, eh amigo?" he said with a bit of a teasing tone, to which Kaiba just rolled his eyes a bit.
"I'm going to check on Mokuba," he replied simply before striding out to the surf and dove under once he was deep enough. Stopping for a moment, he shut his eyes and focused on his magic once again, chanting in his mind:
As water gives life to all that is around me
Allow me to breathe and traverse the sea
White sparks shot from his index finger and warmth spread through his throat as he took a deep breath of the water. With a kick of his legs and stroke of his arms, he swam off into the blue to find Mokuba. With said youngest member, Mokuba had just picked up another shell and examined it when a little crab would poke its head out, wondering what disturbed its home.
"Whoops, sorry!" he laughed slightly with a sheepish grin before setting it back on the white sand. "There ya go." He watched it skitter off into a crevice before going to another part of the reef. He found a large flat boulder and sat down for a moment, looking through what he had collected so far.
'These powers Seto gave me are amazing! I can't believe it's almost been a year since I was saved from Ringmaster Yingya after he turned me into one of those freaks,' he thought as he gazed up towards the surface above, a small smile once more tugging at his mouth. 'Since then, with these powers, it's like a new world opened up to me here.' He would lay back now, one hand resting behind his head and the other on his stomach. 'And Yugi and the others have taught me a lot since that time..' However, the smile vanished and he would look away a bit into the endless blue beyond. 'But it makes wonder.. what other dangers lie out there? Are there others like Yingya? Or worse?'
"Mokuba!" The young boy perked up, snapping out of his thoughts, and sat up when he saw his brother swimming over. Kicking up off the rock, he zipped over with ease and saw his elder sibling smile one of those rare smiles.
"Hey big bro!" Mokuba greeted before the two shared a hug. "What are you doing down here? I thought you were up there, reading."
"I wanted to make sure you were alright. Considering what we've been through, I can't trust that some psycho from Spencer's world trying to hurt you or anyone else," Kaiba replied, which Mokuba nodded in understanding.
"I know, Seto. But don't worry, I'm fine. In fact, being down here has been awesome." Mokuba turned to the floor, his eyes shining a bit in wonder and joy. "With these powers, I get to see stuff you can only see behind swim goggles or in a submarine. And with no gear to weigh me down, it feels like I'm free down here. And seeing this stuff with my own eyes, it's like stepping into a fantasy world."
"But don't get too carried away with using them, Mokuba. I don't want you getting in trouble if someone happens to see you," Kaiba warned while placing a hand on Mokuba's shoulder.
"I understand, Seto. I'll be careful when I come out here again, I promise," nodded Mokuba once again before looking to his hands. "I think it's time I got back to shore. I'm starting to get a bit pruney. Come on!" With that, Mokuba kicked off and swam back to the surface with Seto following behind.
At the bottom of his bag, something shimmered dimly beneath the shells and a voice spoke softly from somewhere in the darkness of the abyss...
I found him...
