Supporting Character

Sasaki Chiho, a kind, cute, hardworking high school girl with a crush. Everybody loved and adored her, so it seemed like a perfectly normal life. She happily held the spot light in her story. But her crush, Sadao Maou's story, was on a whole different level.

And she often wondered, in his story, was she only a supporting character?

She always admired her enthusiastic and passionate senior. He was kind to her, always helped her, and in her eyes, he looked very cool. She enjoyed working with him very much to the point where she always looked forward to their next meeting. He inspired her to work harder, and his kind smile was enough to make her day better…and to make her heart race.

Falling for him was beyond her control.

She was not shy to fight to win his heart. She was brave enough to show her feelings and strong enough to not give up easily. But sometimes he was so dense, she wanted to punch him. Why couldn't he see her feelings? Did he think she was a child?

Or was he…acting dense?

Her feelings didn't change even when she found out that he was so much more than a part-time worker. A demon king? That didn't scare her. If anything, it amazed her. He looked even cooler and she found herself growing more excited about the possibility of him returning her feelings. A demon king accepting the feelings of a normal high school girl? What a romantic story that would be?

But she soon realized, with an amazing a back story, came other characters as well.

Emi Yusa, the sworn enemy of Sadao Maou…. or so they said. Maou in no way treated Emi as a sworn enemy in her eyes. On the other hand, Emi seemed to treat him harshly; but when she looked close enough, she saw a growing soft spot in Emi's heart. Enemies turned into lovers. A common concept in stories. But she refused to back down, she refused to give up hope.

Nothing is set in stone anyway.

But didn't it always go like that? The main character always chooses the one that hates them. They want to get looked at by the one person that doesn't look at them. They fight for the one that pushes them away. Emi had a main character vibe anyway. The appearance of Alas Ramus seemed to verify her theory.

And yet, she refused to give up.

She wasn't going to back down when there was still a chance. She didn't hate Emi, no, she liked her. She liked all the other characters honestly. She never let herself be selfish and always helped all of them in any way she could. It was not just to win Maou's heart, it was because she cared for them. But then, she hoped Maou would notice her too.

She was a lovable character too, wasn't she?

"Hey Chi! Could you check that table please? My hands are full right now." Maou's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. "Eh? Ah yes! I can, don't worry." She gave a smile to which he responded with one of his own. "Thanks Chi! Ah what would I do without you?" he patted her head, looking at her with soft eyes.

And she was reminded why she couldn't give up. There were stories where the main character ended up with a supporting character too.

Then again, who was to say she wasn't a main character?
