Sherman woke up and yawned. Ugh….I better start preparing for school. He thought. He washed his face and combed his hair. He dressed in his regular white T-shirt and black shorts. "Sherman! Breakfast is ready!" shouted his canine parent. "Okay, coming!" The red head put on his black sneakers and raced to the hall to the dining room. Mr. Peabody was still in the kitchen, so Sherman sat down at the table. had fixed his favorite breakfast dish, which was maple pancakes stuffed with scrambled eggs. It was a very simple dish, so Mr. Peabody didn't make it often
. "Good morning, Sherman." greeted Mr. Peabody. "Good morning Mr. Peabody. The food looks delicious!"
"I do try my best, Sherman."
Sherman dove into his plate of food and ate a little bit noisily. Mr. Peabody ate as well, but he was thinking about an invention he was going to make for Sherman's birthday, which was in 3 days. "Is there anything you would like for your birthday Sherman?"
Sherman stopped eating to think. He thought back over his previous birthday presents as far as he could remember. Every present he'd gotten he'd loved. Mr. Peabody had made everyone of them. "Anything you decide is fine by me." Mr. Peabody nodded, and resumed his musings.
"Can I take my skateboard to school today?" he asked
."It's okay with me but be careful!"
"I will be!" Sherman finished eating and grabbed his backpack and his skateboard from his room. He liked to ride to school on it sometimes. "I've gotta go bye Mr. Peabody!" he said and went into the elevator. He pressed the button for the
First floor and rode all the way down. He opened the door and stepped outside. It was a beautiful spring day. The birds were out singing a sweet song. Sheman pushed off the concrete to gain speed and rode along the sidewalk. As he passed the Peterson residence, he saw Penny come out the house. He stopped. "Hi, Penny!" he shouted "Lovely day isn't it!"
"Yes, it is. Why isn't Mr. Peabody taking you?"
"Oh, I just wanted to get some fresh air."
"If you wait a minute for me I will go get my skateboard too, then we can go together."
"Okay!"
Penny reappeared from behind the house with her bike. It was pink and stylish. "Okay let's go! I don't wanna be late for class." Sherman took off, Penny right behind him."Do you have your project ready, Penny?" Sherman asked.
"What project?" She asked, confused.
"You know, the one our science teacher asked us to bring in ?
"Um….."
" She wanted us to make a machine we would like to see developed in the future. Remember now?"
"What?"
"She said we could make an invention or make a diagram."
"Oh! That one! I have mine here in my backpack."
"I have mine too, same place. I made a diagram first then I invented it later."
"What did you make?"
"You'll see when we get to the school."
"Ooooohh. I can hardly take the suspense!" she said playfully. Sherman was about to say more, but the sidewalk ended were the school began.
"Well we're here." Penny and Sherman locked their bikes onto a bike pole then ran up the steps into the school.
"Ya know, I'll never know why these doors are so tall. No child in middle school is this tall. Not even the teachers are this tall.
"Maybe this building wasn't planned at first to be a school, at the door were put in first or something along those lines."
"Maybe." Penny and Sherman walked into their science classroom. They were the first ones in there, but they could hear more people coming up the steps. Sherman sat down next to Penny.
"Sherman what time is it?"
"It's 8:28." Approximately two minutes later, the teacher walked in.
"Good morning." She said in her nasally voice. "We will now show our projects to the class. Barry Richards, you may begin." Barry got up from his seat.
"I know that sometimes falling objects can very badly wound people working on a construction site. Even with a hard hat people can be injured very badly. So I've made a different type of your typical hard hat. It has supports in the back to support your neck if something falls on your head. I think with a little bit of fine tuning, it can help save lives." Barry sat down after showing the hat to the others.
"That was a fine invention Barry. Sue, you may begin."
"Umm… I didn't know we had to do a project."
"Sue….. I gave everyone a note last week reminding them to…. Sue, you get an F because there was no reason for you may present."
"I didn't do it either. Me and Sue….
"Sue and I." said the teacher.
"Sue and I were busy playing fortnight last night so we didn't do it."
"Jimmy you get an F too. Sue because you lied, you will be expelled for the next 3 days. I'll send a note home to your parents." Sue and Jimmy were wallowing in their misery, but the teacher didn't have time for it. After giving 2 more students F's because they didn't do the work, the rest of the students gave their inventions, some with gr8 potential, and some that just needed to go to the trash."Penny! You may present." Penny stood up.
"Today, I'd like to present an updated parachute. Sometimes planes crash. Or break down in the sky. Now, what if you are falling, and somehow the parachute tears. Now the wind resistance is greatly reduced. If you hit the ground you're going to die. My idea is that the parachute fabric closes up automatically if there is a tear." Penny took some scissors and cut a hole in her prototype. The torn fabric instantly closed up. "In this scenario, I think an invention like this would help. It works because of tiny magnets on the inside. If there's a tear, the magnets pull towards each other to repair the magnetic current." Penny sat down. "Very innovative Penny." "Sherman, you may present." After whispering to Penny how she did such a good job, he stood up.
"I've created a device that can save your life in many different instances. Its an electromagnetic shield. One student raised his hand. "Yes Sara?"
"Is an electromagnetic shield kinda like a force field?"
"Umm.. yes, you could put it that way. It… you know what, I'll just demonstrate. Everyone meet me outside at the kickball field in 3 , I need your help, you come with me." And with that he was gone.
"Umm...okay." said Penny, and then she was gone.
"Well I for one am very excited to see this invention." 3 mins later, the class all went outside to the dictated spot. Sherman was typing something into the air on semi-transparent screens, just like Mr. Peabody did on the WAYBAC.
"Okay it's ready." said Sherman. The device was small, 2in by 2in to be precise. It was colored red and had the initials S.P. inscribed on it. Penny was standing there with the device safety-pinned on her shirt. "Are you ready Penny?"
"Yes!" came the reply. This is gonna be SOOO COOL!
Sherman took a baseball form out of his pocket and threw it at Penny. About 3ft from her a transparent field went around her. The baseball shattered into atomic pieces when it hit the field, causing a rippling effect that went from the impact point around the sphere. The school stood there with their mouths wide open. Then Sherman picked up a mini flamethrower.
"I made this too. Now watch!" He opened fire on Penny. Then the fire hit the field, and the whole thing was engulfed, but didn't burn. Sherman released the trigger and there stood a jubilant Penny.
"This thing is awesome! Sherman can I keep it?"
"No." came the quick reply.
The teacher went to open her mouth to say something but no words came out.
"Wait, that's not all!" said the ever happy Sherman. He produced a very tall ladder. And placed it against the school."
AN: "Where is he getting all this stuff?"
"Penny, climb to the top."
Penny raced to the top of the building, Sherman at her heels.
"Now what….AHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Sherman had pushed her off the building. The whole student body gasped. Penny fell to the ground in a cloud of dust, but when it cleared, she was still just fine. "SHERMAN! CAN I DO THAT AGAIN?" she shouted to Sherman who was still at the top of the building.
"NO!"
He came down the ladder and took off the device."It only comes on if you are in danger, so the electromagnetic field isn't on. I would explain how it works, but it would take me about 5 hours, so the short version is, this device manipulates the atoms in the air to create a barrier between you and whatever. Welp, that's my presentation, we can go inside now." Sherman went off to the building, Penny beside him, and the entire student body flocking towards him. The teacher just stood stock still. She had never ever seen anything like this created by a 12 year old boy. She eventually managed to move, and she took her place in the classroom.
"Sherman that is a very futuristic piece of machinery."
"No it's not. It's the future come to the present.
"That's all for science today. You proceed to math class.
All of lunch and all of recess the students tried to get Sherman to let them try out the machine, but Sherman always said no.
Along the way back home Penny said, "Sherman, I really liked your project!"
"I'm glad you liked it. And this is just the beginning.
This might have been a bit weird, but I'm not in the future. See you in the next post!
