Luz unconsciously kicked her feet around in the dirt, aimlessly digging her toes beneath the surface as she held her arm behind her back. The scent of salt water and fresh air filled her nose, allowing a sense of relaxation take over. Though she was growing quite bored waiting for her friends to arrive, she wasn't getting impatient. She understood that this cliffside was rather far off from Bonesborough. In fact, she wouldn't have even known about it had it not been for an odd adventure with Eda and King a couple weeks ago. But after noticing that below the cliff was a beach, she decided to invite Willow and Gus over to go swimming. And since it was a nice and sunny day out, they decided to go today.
She was glad that she'd packed at least one swimsuit when she was being forced to go to summer camp, even if that camp probably wouldn't have any swimming activities available. And she was satisfied with the option she chose—a two-piece with a navy high waisted bottom and a red and white striped top piece tied together behind her back and around her neck. Her head popped up after she heard footsteps approaching, and at first she was alarmed, since the cliffside was a forest and there could be danger lurking nearby.
But then she smiled, seeing it was just her friends walking over to her from a distance, talking amongst themselves. Willow was wearing a black one-piece with white polk-a-dots while Gus only wore blue and white striped swim trunks. Luz lifted her hand up to get their attention, "Willow! Gus!"
The two looked at her and jogged over in her direction. "Hey, sorry we're late." Willow said once they approached her. She nudged Gus' arm, "This one took forever picking out what to wear."
"I'm self-conscious, leave me be!" Gus said defensively.
Luz giggled and shook her head, "Well, you're here now. And the scenery is just perfect for a swim day!" She put her hands to her hips and turned to look out toward the cliff. "I've got my SPF 100 on and my boundless energy!"
"Okay, quick question," Gus spoke up, "How are we getting down there?" He asked, pointing down toward the beach.
Luz scoffed, "We jump. Duh."
Willow and Gus exchanged a look of discomfort. Luz took notice, now growing confused by their hesitance. "What? There's water down there." She shrugged.
"Okay yeah, but, it's a really far drop." Willow said, biting her thumbnail, "Are you sure we shouldn't like, use our magic to get down there?"
Luz sighed, "If you guys want to, go ahead. But I'm jumpin'!" She said with a grin, then walked over towards the edge.
Willow sighed as she reluctantly followed, gesturing for Gus to come with her. He resisted at first, but she gripped his arm (rather tightly) so he couldn't really get out of it. He wasn't a fan of cliffs, especially not after the Moonlight Conjuring when the three of them were almost killed by being thrown over a cliff. Luz seemed to be handling that memory pretty well, though.
The three of them removed their shoes as they stood over the edge, staring down at the tides crashing on the sandy shore below. Luz was bouncing ecstatically while her friends remained indifferent. They were still excited about swimming together, but they were feeling quite anxious about jumping in.
"Sooo who's goin first?" Luz asked with a wide grin.
"It was your idea," Gus said, "You go first."
Luz scowled him playfully, "You made me wait half an hour."
Willow laughed while Gus blushed and furrowed his brows, "I didn't think we were in a hurry!"
"Hey, knuckleheads!"
The three turned around after hearing a familiar voice. They gasped in surprise when they saw Eda behind them, having just landed on her staff, with King still clinging onto it. Luz's smile grew wider, if that was possible. "Eda!"
The older witch smirked as she stood up and held her staff after King jumped down on the ground. "Are any of you gonna jump or am I goin' first?" She asked knowingly. The three exchanged a glance, chuckling to themselves. Eda drew a circle in the air, and a second later she was wearing a red high-waisted two-piece, with her untamed hair somehow pulled back into a ponytail. She dropped her staff to the ground and ran over in their direction.
They smiled in amusement and swiftly moved out of the way, allowing the owl lady to run over to the cliff and jump off of the edge, falling free into the water below.
Luz laughed excitedly and pumped her fists in the air. "Woohoo! Go Eda!" She cheered before she jumped off the edge as well, flailing her arms around as she landed in the water.
Eda and Luz popped their heads out from the water a second later, laughing to themselves.
King pushed his way between Willow and Gus' legs, "If you guys are just gonna stand there, make room for the pros." He said confidently. He got on all fours and leapt down toward the water, "Woohoo!"
He landed in the water beside Luz and Eda, barely making a splash since his body was so small. They laughed a bit, but stopped when he popped up from the surface.
Gus sighed and shrugged his shoulders, "Well, if they're doing it..." He then jumped off the edge, curling his legs up to his chest to make a ball shape. "Cannonball!!"
Willow cringed and removed her glasses, "Oh geez..." She whispered before she closed her eyes and jumped off afterward, screaming the entire way down.
She and Gus came up from under the water with small gasps, then glanced at each other in astonishment. "We just did that!" Willow giggled.
Gus pumped his fists in the air, "Yes! I am the king of the water!"
He, Luz, Willow, and King began to play around in the water, splashing each other and having small races around the area, while Eda let herself float around on her back to relax. She did eventually join the kids in their game of Marco Polo—which Luz had to teach them how to play.
Hours had passed, so the sun was beginning to set. Willow and Gus were preoccupied building a sand castle at the shore with King was busy taking his fifth nap of the day. So that left just Luz and Eda in the water. Luz didn't really want to get out and dry off, but she didn't want to laze about in the water like Eda was doing.
Luz grinned as she treaded over to the witch, "Hey Edaaaa..."
"What?" She asked, not even opening her eyes.
"Wanna play a game?" The teen asked, resting her chin on Eda's bare stomach.
The owl lady hummed in thought, but then responded with a resounding, "No."
Luz groaned, "Come on! I know a really fun and easy game we can play, you don't have to move around or anything!"
Eda sighed and looked down at the human. As much as she didn't want to play anything, she couldn't keep saying no to her apprentice. "Fine, what is it?" She asked as she let her body sink back down in the water, with only the shoulders-up exposed.
Luz grinned widely and took the witch's hands, taking her over to a spot where she could actually stand. "Okay, it's called Colors. To start off, I hold you like this," She then managed to scoop the older lady in her arms, much to her dismay. "And you try to guess what color I'm thinking of. If you get it wrong, I dunk your head in the water."
"And if I get it right?" Eda asked, crossing her arms, growing very uncomfortable being in this position. She felt like she was being cradled, like some sort of baby. But if this made Luz happy, she was willing to suffer through it.
"Then I flip you, and we switch positions." Luz informed. "Alright, I'll start with something easy. And no using any sort of magic to read my mind or whatever."
"Ugh, fine." The owl lady groaned, rolling her eyes.
Luz thought for a moment, then picked a random color. "Okay, guess." She said.
"Hmmm..purple." Eda guessed.
Luz smirked and lightly dipped the witch under the water, then lifted her back up. "You're close." She said.
Eda huffed, since she wasn't expecting her answer to be wrong. "Blue." She said, confidently.
The teen shook her head and dipped her again.
"Red?"
Dipped again.
"Orange?"
Again.
"Green?"
Finally, Luz flipped her into the water, laughing at the way she reacted to it. Eda instantly stood up and brushed her wet hair strands from her face, giving he human an annoyed scowl.
"Your turn now!" Luz giggled, reaching her arms up.
Eda raised a brow and cradled her in her arms, "Alright, I've got a color."
Luz thought for a moment, then grinned. "Is it red?"
Eda smirked, "Nope." Then she snorted as she abruptly dropped Luz into the water.
