Frog Army: The Beginning (Part One)

Summary: Todd finds out he can use frogs as spies, in the worst way possible.

Warning: Nature is brutal

He sat comfortably between the tall grass on the banks of the lake he and Kurt had been visiting more frequently now. Kurt noticed Todd liked the peacefulness of the nature around here and had ported them more often to this spot. Todd had been dozing off, staring at the vast lake and the thick forest behind the banks on the other side of it, listening to the sounds around him. Only his head had been above the water as his body soaked in the cool water.

Suddenly he felt the water behind him shift and some of it splashed over his head as something appeared in the tall grass behind him. Before he could turn around and look what or who it was he was hauled into the air by a crushing force on his abdomen. Quickly turning his eyes towards it he saw the huge beak that had taken a hold on him. He let out a sudden croak as he kicked with his legs in an attempt to get free.

Mere moments later he hit the ground again, feeling the grass and cold soil beneath his body as he pushed his legs under himself to get up and run away before a massive, leathery claw stomped down on one of his legs, one of the large talons raked along his thin skin. Before he could make another feeble attempt at an exit he felt a searing hot feeling on his free leg. It took him another antagonising moment to realise this other leg had been long gone. He was still struggling to break free of the massive clutches of this prehistorical beast as he saw a massive beak close around his head before his vision went black.

Todd jumped almost twenty feet in the air, water splashing around him as he hit the cold grass again, hard on his back. He almost screamed but only a few croak-like breaths left his throat as he took in his surroundings, the lake, the tall grass along the banks, a few dragonflies fluttering away due to his sudden exit of his comfortable spot in the water. He almost choked on every breath he took and his body had never been shaking this violently.

"Todd?!" He jumped at the worried call of his name.

Then his gaze landed on the dark grey beak and the long legs of the light grey heron that was perched in grass on the other side of the bay at the end of the lake. He was sure his eyes glowed red as he acted out of white hot rage.

The heron ducked to the side and flapped it's massive wings just in time as an enormous slime ball, aimed for the grey bird's head, flew right into the tree behind it. Todd had only caught a glimpse of the half eaten frog still dangling from its beak as the bird landed on another patch of the shore to continue its meal. He was about to spit more slime in the birds direction, felt his throat filling up with the dark green substance, ready to fire with great speeds, when a hand pressed down on his shoulder.

Todd turned around to see the worried face of his boyfriend. He was almost sorry for Kurt's love for all animals to shoot another slimeball at the frog-killer but opted to do it anyway, it was too late to swallow the slime anyways. It hit the ground as the heron flew away again, done with its quick meal.

"Todd, was happened?" He heard Kurt ask, his hearing was muffled, he had to calm down. Kurt waited silently until he had his breathing at a fairly normal pace again.

"That- th- That stupid bird just ate me!" Todd blurted out, Kurt knitted his eyebrows, reeling his head back in confusion.

"Was?" He asked the amphibian, who just glared at the heron with bright red eyes.

"That fucking bird just ate me! No- not me, a frog, but- but it was me! I felt- it felt so real!" Todd shouted out, flinging his arms around in an angry manner, not taking his eyes off the poor bird that was still sitting in a dangerously close slime spit-range.

"Todd, calm down, then you can explain it to me." Kurt urged him gently, his hand still firmly placed on his boyfriends shoulder.

Todd angrily exhaled through his nose and flapped his arms around again. "I just told you! I was just sitting in the water and suddenly this huge bird just grabs me, tears my leg off and eats me! And then I woke up again and see the same bird sitting right across from me eating a frog with only one leg!" Todd almost yells, finally meeting Kurt's yellow eyes with his own dark red ones.

"Maybe it was just a dream, you dozed off for some time while you were under the water again." Kurt explained softly to him, mentioning how Todd sometimes would slip underneath the surface where the water would only be just under his eyes, his extra eyelids protecting them from sudden ripples in the water. "You seemed pretty out of it," the blue mutant shrugged and shifted his eyes towards the spot Todd had been sprawled out just mere moments ago.

"Well how do you explain that stupid bird then?! That's not just a coincidence!" Todd flayed his arms into the direction of the unsuspecting heron again.

"Todd, I-" Kurt tried to calm him down again before Todd cut him off.

"You don't believe me, do you?" Todd asked, crossing his arms over his bare chest, cringing at how he felt his rapid heartbeat thudding against his ribcage. He took another few breaths in the hopes to come down from the shock.

"Yes, I- Don't you think it's a bit odd-"

"Says the mutant who can teleport." Todd pointed out as his annoyance spiked again.

"That's not what I was trying to say-" Kurt urged again.

"Then what were you going to say? Why don't you just say what you mea-"

Kurt cut him off now as he noticed Todd was only getting angrier and more confused by the conversation they were having. "I believe you, but now is not the time to discuss this, not when you are still upset. If you want to go, I'll port us somewhere else." He began, noticing Todd's angry expression leaving his face. He waited a few breaths until he saw the colour of his boyfriend's eyes shift back to their normal amber colour before he continued. "But if you want to stay, then we stay. We still have some snacks left and it's still pretty early. We can go sit in the shade for a while and calm down and enjoy the rest of our day."

Todd nodded at that and let Kurt guide him towards their shared blanket on the ground near the tree line, covered in the shadow made by the dense forest around them.

Kurt sat against the tree not surrounded by bushes and he pulled Todd against him, wrapping one arm around his shoulder and repositioning so Todd could lay his head on him while his long legs were sprawled out. Kurt drew small circles on Todd's shoulder with one of his fingers and he felt the amphibian mutant relax against his body.

They sat like that for a while until Todd spoke up, his eyes shifted from the now flying heron towards Kurt's free hand and he grabbed it with his webbed fingers. "You know, if I actually can see what frogs see then using frogs as a tiny spy army isn't such a bad idea, yo."

Kurt just snickered at that and tried not to think of the disastrous plans his mischievous boyfriend could come up with.
