Hi everyone!
Thank you for the many kind reviews. I appreciate them a lot. It's always difficult to accommodate everyone's wishes but I write the stories for myself. I simply let you guys enjoy them too. If the story doesn't meet your standards or your imagination than I'd love to see you write your own stories. I'd be more than happy to read and enjoy them as well.
Wow! It took me so long to write the last chapter. There are a bit over 24.000 words, my longest chapter so far! I've probably written 5 days straight up to 12 hours a day. I was so tired at the end that I slept for 10 hours that night.
I'm not going to write another chapter that long. I just really wanted to write a solid background for the relationship between Hachiman and Kyoko, the development of their characters and it being more than 'I know her because we visited the same supermarket every Wednesday'. I wanted someone to know Hachiman before the bullying, before he became the loner and pessimist he is in High school. Someone that can use factual memories to change his behavior.
I have completed the story in my head and written a lot of storyline on paper. I knew there will still be a lot of additions to during the writing but I am pretty much OK with the ideas I have. There will be some OC events happening and things that might go a bit faster than the LN does. But once again it's my story and I am content with where I'm going with it.
In the end, I hope you will enjoy the 3rd chapter of 'A Mother's Resolve'!
It was a cold morning in Chiba city. It had been snowing last night and blanketed the city in a pure white. Though it was beautiful on the outside, snow does cause a lot of trouble for those having to go outside. During the night, ice flowers grew on the windows of the Hikigaya household, causing all the rooms to be very cold.
The residents of the house were very much aware of the cold and wore a warm pajamas. The two older ones, having left for work at the dawn of day had turned on the heater so their children wouldn't wake up in a very cold house. The air bubbles in the heater escaped through the tubes, clashing against the cold metal.
These clangs traveled through the different bedrooms that heated up, arriving finally in a room that was seconds away from the buzzing of a telephone alarm. The gentle vibrations started to shake on the wooden table next to a bed where a visible ahoge stood on the occupants head. It was slowly waving with the breathing from its owner, whose body was showing signs of wake up.
Hachiman slowly blinked and his unfocused bleary eyes were opening up. He rolled his stiff shoulders and groaned in relief. Looking around him he noticed he was in his room, smacking his dry lips before yawning. 'Ugh that was a strange dream. Why would I think back about that time.' Hachiman monologued in his head. He had dreamt about a past that felt like ages ago. a time where he was alone, but was with his second favorite person. No one could be better than Komachi.
Unconsciously he put his hands behind his head and stared at the ceiling, thinking about all the things he had done. Things he remembered from all those years spending his holiday at his grandparents' place. '...when did I start forgetting about that place...and why haven't I seen them anymore for years?'
Hachiman sighed, his exhale visibly floating up in the cold air. Meeting Kyoko again yesterday opened memories that had stayed locked for years. It was a year and a half later that he reached his lowest moment. Kyoko was actually kind and loving to him, she was not. Since that very moment, the moment his heart throbbed in actual pain, he swore to himself that he would find someone genuine. Someone with shortcomings, with scars, with issues and pain. He would accept them all. If he wouldn't meet anyone like that, he would find her in the next life.
His hand reached out to his shaking phone still enthusiastically buzzing next to his head. Once in his hand he flipped it open and turned the alarm off. Hachiman checked what time it was and blinked twice when he saw a message from an unknown number. a small frown appeared on his face from the strange situation as he rarely got any texts, so he sat up straight in bed and opened the message. His eyes followed the words from the message and fast enough the frown left his face and it became nostalgic.
'Dear Hachi-kun. It's your favorite Kyoko-nee-san! I'm so thrilled we met again. I've talked to Goro-kun and he'd be happy to give you a call, so expect one today! When you're here this weekend (you most definitely will!) then I hope you won't seek out your solitude. I can't speak for my daughters but I do want to spend time with you. When you are done with club this Friday, Haruno and Yukino will bring you to the mansion. I'll see you soon. love you Hachi-kun(≧◡≦)'
Hachiman grumbled when he read the message, but a tinge of red was softly coloring his cheeks. ''...this woman...aren't you in your early forties and you still use kaomiji in your texts.'' He whispered to himself as he closed the phone again, though not before he saved the number in his nearly empty contact list. Calmly he stepped out of his bed, the cold tickling his bare feet but the warmth of the heater made sure the didn't cold at all. Opening his curtains he saw how cold it had been as men and women of all ages walked past the house, wearing warm clothes and gloves. The sight itself caused him to slump, as he too would be outside within the hour.
After getting in the shower, cleaning himself and waking up completely to start a fresh day, he got dressed and made his way downstairs. He looked enviously at Kamakura laying on the heater, sleeping and groaning with a satisfied nyaa~. 'In my next life I want to learn from you and be the most relaxed cat in existence.' Hachiman thought to himself, before entering the living room. Komachi was already there, having made breakfast for herself and her brother. She was in the middle of filling her bag with books when her brother entered the room. She looked at him and smiled before continuing what she was doing. Hachiman walked up to the kitchen and took a cup to fill with hot water. ''Good morning, Komachi-chan. Ready for another day of torture?''
Komachi shot him a gross look and said ''Also good morning to you, Gomii-chan. Your sister had to wake up all by herself, no cuddles, no uplifting words. I waited here all cold for you and what I get is a mean Gomii-chan.'' and began to rub her eyes in faux sadness. Hachiman slammed his cup down on the kitchen counter with a horrified look on his face. He walked up to her and fell on his knees. Where he thought he would be met with wet eyes, a small smile was instead on her face as she patted his gaping face.
''Please don't do that to Onii-chan again...I might not survive it the next time.'' Hachiman voiced as he sat down on the couch a moment later, softly blowing in the hot cup of tea. His sister chuckled softly before zipping her bag up and took a seat next to him. She leaned into his shoulder and closed her eyes, softly breathing out to find a moment of relaxation. She was only a few weeks away from the entrance exams and had to study hard every day. Unfortunately she was gifted with Hachiman's intelligence and had to actually work hard for it. Though on the other hand, she inherited every social bone that he did not from their parents.
''Onii-chan...I missed your warmth this morning. Why did it take so long for you to get home yesterday?'' Komachi quietly voiced her thoughts as she held his arm between her budding bosom. Hachiman was recollecting his thoughts for a moment, thinking about what he would share with his sister. He gently gripped the crown of her head and pressed down, causing her to moan in both pain and relaxation. the more he pressed, the further she uncoiled. She'd never allow him to do it when they were in public, as her faint pink and panting face was too shameful to show anyone else.
Within mere seconds her lights were out and she softly moaned on his thighs. Hachiman knew how much she looked forward to this very moment. ''Onii-chan had a long and strange day yesterday. Outside of the obligatory date I told you about...I actually met someone from long ago.'' He heard her groan in understanding, urging him to continue with his story. ''...uhm...Komachi-chan. Do you remember spending your summer with grandpa and grandma in Iidaka?''
Komachi stiffened before nodding his thigh with her face. ''I do remember some of it. I was alone most of the time inside the house. Grandma and I would go out but only so much. I was too young to be alone outside and there were only old maidens living there. hehehe I cried so much for Onii-chan to come save me. Remember that's why you didn't go to grandmother and grandfather in the south anymore.''
Hachiman blinked once, and again. ''...what? Why wouldn't I have taken her with me to grandmother and grandfather?'' Hachiman asked himself internally. But before Hachiman could continue, his sister asked 'hnnggh...so who did you meet?'' Komachi moved her head deeper in his hand when he was thinking. ''...do you remember me talking about a Kyoko-nee-san a long time ago?''
Komachi stretched herself, plucking at the couch before inhaling and exhaling in recollection. ''...I think I do...why?'' so Hachiman explained a little about her. Where they met, what they were to the other and how she treated him. Komachi was nodding once in a while, understanding what Hachiman said and was slightly shaken by the fact that there was someone that close to him. Maybe even closer than her own parents. ''...you see Komachi. Kyoko-nee-san happens to be the mother of someone we know.''
Hachiman slowly swallowed his saliva before finally saying ''Kyoko-nee-san is Yukinoshita's mom...'' Komachi interpreted the words instantly and shot up, almost slamming into her brother's face. She stared at him with sparkling eyes and began to leak tears. ''O-Onii-chan! I'm so happy for you, an older wife could learn you a lot! Also Yukino-chan and Haruno-san would be my cousins...thats not bad at all! hmm hmm OK Onii-chan! Komachi approves!'' She shouted happily in a single breath. Her small fang peeked out of her upper lip as she gave him a thumbs up with a happy face.
Though Hachiman didn't want to, his body erupted in a full blush thinking about Kyoko being his wife. Spending time with her, have dinner together and having her in his bed, under him moaning as they did that. He quickly stopped imagining any further as he pulled on his sister's ahoge, causing her to cry out and chuckle at the same time. ''...you little! No komachi points! minus Komachi points!'' He yelled, causing her to squeak when he also tickled her sides. The Hikigaya duo enjoyed their early morning wrestle.
Eventually they stopped, holding on to each other. ''What time will you be home?'' Hachiman asked as he lot go of his sister, they had to leave for school. ''Hmm...ah! I have extra lessons after school. Mom and Dad already paid so I have to go. I think I will be home pretty late so you don't have to make dinner for me.'' Komachi lifted her bag and opened her arms for her older brother. She moved into his embrace, indulging in his warmth before having to let go. ''hehehe...lots and lots of Komachi points for me.''
Hachiman softly grumbled but didn't deny her words. She left the house with a final smile, showing her small fang and waved at him. It didn't take long for him to shove the food she prepared for him in his mouth. He couldn't remember the taste because anything she'd make for him was the finest cuisine in the world, or so would only he say. Quickly doing the dishes, letting them dry out by themselves before putting his shoes on and replacing the warm room for the cold he so dreaded outside.
Usually he'd be late for the first class in the morning. Japanese, math or biology. To him it didn't matter. But the cold, especially being outside in the cold, was a great detergent to his tardy behavior as he failed to walk with a crooked back, but instead walked tall and fast. Some faces stared at him at the busy intersection, but Hachiman paid them no mind. Instead his thoughts were firmly on yesterday's date and the strange dream he had last night.
When he walked up the stairs on the way to his classroom, ignoring the stares and negative comments that were thrown his way, he found his seat and waited for the class to begin. Even after everything that had happened, there were still some die hard believers that he was inherently bad. Though he no longer cared about such people, it still made his heart throb painfully. Yet at the same time, he was happy to hear his classmates talk about the Christmas event. How much they enjoyed last week's musical rendition and stage play. Hachiman smiled when he remembered Rumi smile brightly at him when the actors received a standing ovation from the crowd. Iroha had also thanked him backstage before she was being called on stage, accepting the audience's praise with a shy smile.
Hachiman was so deep in thought that he hadn't paid any attention to the fact that class had already started fifteen minutes ago. Hiratsuka-sensei decided not to give him a hard time since he had been so successful lately, but even she didn't like to be stared at by dead fish eyes. It's not that she considered his eyes to be disgusting or unattractive, but she likes them to be focused on her. She walked up to him, the students' eyes focused on the assignment that they've just been given. Only a scarce few paying attention to the click of her heels coming to a stop in front of a student. Since he still made no move, Shizuka shook him until his eyes regained a semblance of life and he blinked twice staring up at his teacher. Finally he sighed when he noticed the paper in front of him and sent a meaningless gaze to her. He worked on the paper until the end of class.
The entire day was filled with boring classes, where he had to keep his attention on the lessons as for some reason the teachers were paying extra attention to him. This was due to the compliments he was given in the teachers' lounge by Hiratsuka-sensei, the student council and former student presidents Haruno and Meguri. Hachiman however knew nothing about this so he tried his best to stay as unnoticeable as he could be. The additional attention took a lot from his daily energy reserves, so he decided to remain in class during lunch, listening to his music as he enjoyed the bento he bought the day before. It's a world apart from the food Komachi prepared for him in the morning, but he ate it with gusto.
Hachiman went through the motions of all classes and held his head up with his hand when the final lesson was over. The bell rang and the groups of friends around him congregated and laughed. He wasn't interested in any of it as he picked up his bag and was ready to leave for club. However, a sudden arm that wrapped around his own prevented him from walking. The soft feeling that wrapped around his arm meant it could only be one person. Yui pouted when he stared at her. Since she didn't get a good reply yesterday about how he knew Yukino's mother she decided Hachiman would tell her today. When the class ended she said bye to Yumiko who was in the middle of forming a word and walked off to Hachiman, who once again tried to slip out of the classroom unnoticeably.
Yui tightly held his arm between her bosom before turning around and waving to her friends, before leaving the class. The hallway was still busy, but the closer they came to the clubroom the fewer students there were. Their steps were the only sound being heard when they reached their location, though Yui pouted when he didn't start talking to her. ''Mooh! Hikki! I want to know about you and Yukinon's mom...'' She whined as Hachiman opened the door. Inside the room smelled like a mixture of lavender and sugar, today's tea as he saw a teapot on their long table. In her usual seat, Yukino looked up from her book and stared at her fellow clubmembers and put the cup she held to her lips back on the table.
''Good afternoon Yuigahama-san, Hikigaya-kun.'' She said as her eyes were on Hachiman, or more specifically their locked arms. On the outside it wasn't visible, but as she was being touched by the warm rays of the sun Hachiman could see the icy aura exude from her body. Though Hachiman didn't really mind being hold like this as he secretly enjoyed it, but it didn't mean he would explain everything about his past to her. In the end, it wasn't part of their collective story. ''Sorry...uhm...Yuigahama-san.'' Hachiman said as he slowly untangled their arms. He did it with such softness that it caused even an extroverted girl like Yui to blush. ''I know that you are interested, but the relationship between myself and Yukinoshita's mother is a sensitive topic.'' Her mouth opened slightly in surprise as he looked genuinely sorry, before turning away from her and walking to his seat.
Yui remained behind, staring at her arm and Hachiman before silently walking to her seat. Yukino watched the conversation with intrigue, before returning back to her book. Soon any form of tension was gone from the room. Their bodies uncoiled and enjoyed their afternoon, waiting for any kind of requests that might come their way. It was Yukino who addressed her club members first. ''I have received several compliments from the teachers and the participants in the Christmas festivities. Thank you.''
She received a bright smile from Yui and a nod of the head from Hachiman. ''...Hikigaya-kun can you be any less elated about a compliment. I understand you haven't received any praise in the past years but still that's no reason to act like a protagonist from one of your lewd...literary novels?'' Yukino looked at him as if he was retarded, sparking one of their infamous in-fights.
''Why thank you, Yukinoshita-san. I'd say Yuigahama-san and I can celebrate in here, and you can play outside in the snow.''
''My, my what a way with words you have, Hikigaya-kun. and how original using my name in that fashion. Might your limited prepubescent brain that's filled with the images of your literary wonder save all real women from your devious eyes and bad jokes.''
''I suppose the praise of the teachers has gotten to your head, Yukinoshita-san. You are awfully considerate of the opinion of the masses. Should I call you Nikkoshita-san from now on?''
''A good leader knows when to accept praise. Even though I've been praised all my life for my appearance and grades, I suppose you wouldn't know about that Hikicreepy-kun.''
''...ah that one again. You're losing your touch Yukipedia-san.''
Though some of the words were harsh, neither of the two was actually mad or insulted. Yui sighed as she tapped at her phone, boringly being ignored by the playful duo. they smiled at one another, where both realized they were staring at the other, quickly looking away with a tinge of red on their cheeks. The trio returned to what they were doing, though Yui quickly got in a conversation with Yukino, who was now forced to close her book and talk to her club mate and friend.
He would often peek at his female club mates, quick and hopefully unnoticed to not intrude on their natural habitat. The bubbly pinkette would show something excitedly to her more demure dark haired friend. Hachiman smiled to himself as he looked at the dark haired girl, shifting her eyes between her friend and the phone while tucking her hair behind one of her ears. He kept watching until both girls suddenly stared at him. Being caught in a sudden spotlight, Hachiman tried to come up with the most believable reason that would keep him out of trouble, but quickly noticed the sound that was coming from the pocket of his jacket.
The combination of buzzing and an old school ringtone caught their attention. ''Hikki...you usually don't get called.'' Yui said as she voiced everyone's thoughts. Yukino stared at him, an unreadable look in her eyes when she fixed them on his pocket. Hachiman swallowed once and took the phone out, vibrating in his hand.
He didn't recognize the number, so it could be only one person. ''...Hello? Hikigaya speaking.''
''Hello, this is Yukinoshita Goro speaking! Hachiman-kun...it's been a long time.''
The voice was a bit deeper than he was used to, and the man sounded a bit sleepy. ''Yukinoshita-san, it's good to hear from you. Your wife sent me a message this morning that you would call.''
Yukino froze the moment she heard Hachiman mention a Yukinoshita-san on the phone and listened carefully.
''Yukinoshita-san? Hachiman-kun, you can always call me Goro. Being in my second term as a council member hasn't changed me that much haha.''
Hachiman smiled and actually chuckled during their conversation. It was a new experience for his club mates to see him so relaxed and free, which caused them both to feel a bit sullen.
''I'm glad to hear your voice again Hachiman, but I have a video conference coming up. How about you come down to the office and we'll have dinner. We can order anything you want.''
''...thanks for the offer. I'm going to have to think about it.''
''...Hachiman-kun. I also happen to have a request for you. You can consider it as a club request.''
Hachiman sighed as he looked at the girls, staring at him and his phone. He thought for a moment, thinking about how long he would need to travel.
''...well I guess I will. Komachi won't be home and the food is free. I'll come as soon as I can.''
''Hachiman-kun...thank you. I mean it. I will have someone waiting for you in the lobby. See you in a bit!'' and the conversation was over.
The girls watched as he silently put his phone down, closing it with a soft click and stared in front of him. He sipped from his tea, which was lukewarm by now, and had completely forgotten his novel in front of him. Hachiman stared at the clock on the wall, moving forward second by second and doing some time calculations in his head.
''Yukinoshita, I'm having dinner with your father, so I'd like to leave early...like right now.'' Hachiman said to Yukino, who nodded in understanding. ''I'm not very eager to allow this kind of behavior, since it would promote your tardiness even more. But I'll make an exception for you, because you have done well these last weeks.'' Hachiman was surprised by the level of kindness she had shown him today, but saw no lies in her blue eyes. In fact, she looked happy today. ''...I wonder.'' He thought.
''Thanks Yukinoshita. I'll be off then. Good night to you as well Yuigahama'' Hachiman said and left the room, receiving waves from both girls.
Walking through the hallways towards the entrance of the school, Hachiman was contemplating to himself. He wondered why a man like Goro would need his help. Hachiman decided to simply ask him when they would meet as the man was resourceful and connected enough to deal with any serious issues, so Hachiman came to the conclusion it must be personal. When he got outside, walking alone down the sidewalk as all students had by now either left the school or were busy with their club activities, Hachiman decided to enjoy the cold breeze as he walked to the bus stop. Alone he sat on the bench and looked at the snow that still clung to the trees and bushes around him. It was the time of year that he would enjoy when he'd become a house husband in the future.
He grinned just imagining the losers having to go to work while he would stay in his futon or under the kotatsu and stare out the window with sparkling eyes. He couldn't relish in his daydream any longer as the bus arrived at the stop. In the bus he checked his phone to look for any messages and re-read the text he received from Kyoko, unbothered by the bus moving and stopping while picking up and dropping off passengers. Within 20 minutes the bus had reached its final destination, and Hachiman decided that an upgrade of a mobile phone was in order. He looked around enviously at all the other passengers staring at their smartphone screens, reading novels, playing games or simply browsing the internet, something he could not do.
Since Hachiman wanted to take a walk, he decided not to take the monorail to Goro's office. The bus reached its final destination just 100 meters ahead of the main entrance, so he was spared the crowds and walked. He slouched and kept his hands in his pocket to keep them warm from the cold air that he walked through. The streets were filled with salarymen and women who were walking towards the station, or were forced to join their colleagues to one of the numerous izakaya around the area to drink too much. The first shops were already closing and restaurants welcomed the first guests of the night. Hachiman minded his own business as he walked opposite of the main group of people that walked towards them. He shivered from a sudden gust of cold air, right in front of a group of university students. Several males walked with two women, of which one was alerted by the shivering of Hachiman.
''ara~ Hikigaya-kuuun~!'' a female voice suddenly exclaimed out of the group. Hachiman looked at the group and saw the elated stare of a familiar face who waved enthusiastically at him. She immediately excused herself from the surprised and annoyed looking men, who had been vying for her attention ever since leaving the university grounds. The other woman at first looked happy, but was annoyed soon after as the men's attention didn't shift towards her. Hachiman stared at the familiar figure walking up to him, not happy at all. He could care less about the riajuus looking bitter as their eye candy walked away from them.
''Hikigaya-kuuun! I'm so happy to see you! What are you doin' in this part of Chiba, you should've called me.'' Haruno happily said as she closed in on him. Hachiman wasn't having any of it as the riajuus began steaming. She insinuated a good relationship, a surprise meeting and him having possession of her contact details, something they all wanted but neither of them had. Hachiman could just feel her wanting to incite an altercation, so he took two steps back, causing Haruno to lift a delicate eyebrow. ''What's goin' on Hikigaya-kun?'' She asked, using a more seductive tone. She curled her forefinger against her lip and pouted. ''...do you not want to see your onee-san?''
If it was anyone but Hachiman it would've meant three strikes you're out, and they'd fallen to the ground apologizing to her. But not Hachiman, no he was exposed to her sparkling violet eyes, burning into his retina. As she was the third most rotten person in the world, second only to himself and Iroha, Hachiman was blessed with seeing through her mask immediately after meeting her for the first time. Once she was in front of him, still wearing that same perfect smile like a mask, he began to chuckle uncomfortably.
Even in this cold weather he could feel drips of hot sweat roll down his back. Haruno's friends were confused when Hachiman's face slightly paled when Haruno entered his personal personal space. They couldn't see her face as she stood with her back towards them. ''...hmm...Y-Yo Yukinoshita-san. I happen to have an appointment in the area...so yeah, goodbye for now.'' Hachiman voiced loud enough that Haruno's friends could also hear him. He gave her a slight bow before walking off. His body moved, though he remained in place by the cold smile Haruno sent him, freezing him on the spot.
''...heeeh an appointment..I hope you aren't cheating on Yukino-chan...why don't you let onee-san join you?'' Haruno suggested as she came even closer to him. Her face was close enough to suggest a very personal bond between the two, something Hachiman wanted to prevent at all cost. ''...hehehe. that's alright, Yukinoshita-san. I appreciate your thoughtfulness, but I really have to go now.''
Hachiman knew by her stare that he wasn't leaving that place by himself. Unnoticed by the students, he gestured Haruno to lean in, which she immediately did. From a distance it looked like they were having an intimate conversation, which could lead to spending the night at a love hotel, but it couldn't be further from the truth. ''Yukinoshita-san, what's going on? you look twice as scary as usual?'' Hachiman asked her. Haruno's mask cracked slightly before immediately being repaired as she began to chuckle. She slipped her arm around his, similar as what Yui did earlier in the day. However, there was a massive difference between the two as his arm was swallowed up by her bosom. Her face was even closer to his ear, where she gently dropped her masked. ''heehh...Hikigaya-kun you know me so well. Why don't you accept your fate and let onee-san join you for today?''
Haruno smiled upon hearing his sigh of resignation and turned around with the young man firmly strapped against her. The students looked with different levels of envy to the young man that looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there, and a beautiful young woman smiling at them. ''...I'm really sorry, Kousuke-kun! We can go out another time. My future brother-in-law surprised me! I can't say no to him.'' Haruno said as she emphasized the connection between herself and Hachiman by giving him some nice service. One of the men in the group nodded to her and laughed it off painfully. Hachiman could read his face and decided to give him some help. ''You can still join them, Yukinoshita-san. No problem. In fact I think it would be better, so please leave.'' He said, causing the man to look at him as if he was both a deity as insane.
''...ahaha Hikigaya-kun. Sometimes you're really funny, no wonder my little sister fell for you fufu~ I will see the six of you tomorrow.'' and with a final goodnight she pulled Hachiman along with her, walking in the direction he went. She pulled his face a bit closer to hers and whispered ''Just enjoy onee-san's service. If you make another joke this onee-san will have to punish you.'' Hachiman wisely kept his mouth shut until the group of students was out of sight. Immediately Haruno lost some of the tension in her body and stopped pulling him along. She guided his arm away from her chest but did keep them interlocked. Like an intimate pair of brother and sister.
They walked alone past empty office buildings, still lit up brightly as if they were full of life. The reflecting windows showed Hachiman a scene he wouldn't expect to see in his lifetime. A beautiful girl with a small smile holding onto him. She looked calmer with her mask dropped down. ''...what?'' Haruno suddenly asked as she noticed him staring at her through the reflection of the windows. Her small smile turned wider as she continued ''...is it strange that I don't wear a mask around you? fufu~ there's no need to act when I'm with you, my cute monster of logic.''
She tapped her forefinger on his cheek when she spoke, causing him to pop a small vein on his forehead. It wasn't easy to make him angry, but these few minutes have been the longest they've ever been alone together. Her words and her actions went against everything he knew of her. The way she spoke would make anyone feel like they were a part of her life, even if it was for only a sweet couple of minutes. Her kind words told in a soft but sweet tone felt like honey to his ears. Hachiman knew better than to fall for her.
Hachiman looked at her questioning gaze and she smirked when his eyes pointed at their interlocked arms, chuckling softly when she gave him a soft squeeze. ''Yukinoshita-san, what can I do for you today?'' He asked with a deep sigh. He just knew she wanted to play around with him. Haruno pouted softly though she sent him a relieved smile. ''...you helped me out, Hikigaya-kun. Quite a bit I must say.'' She said as they stopped for a traffic light. Her eyes brightly on the windows of the cars and trucks passing by. Above them, the monorail trains made a lot of metallic noises as they came by. Her silence spoke to him, touching him in a way he didn't expect.
''...uhh that's alright. Not sure how I helped, but you're welcome.'' Hachiman eventually replied as they walked again, causing her to softly swing her hip into his. Her curvaceous body meshing with his own for a moment. ''Those guys you just saw. They aren't my friends, at best we're barely acquainted. They think I want to be a notch on their bedpost because I am not outright hostile...ughh...Hikigaya-kun promise me you won't change. People might think your eyes make you inherently bad, but I know better.''
''Okay, that's enough.'' Hachiman said as he stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and took his arm from her, before being met by her surprised face. ''What do you want, Yukinoshita-san? You're never this kind, you're always scheming and trying to get me or your sister into trouble.'' He hasn't forgotten the way Haruno tried to demean him in front of everyone during the date from yesterday. Haruno's face turned more serious when Hachiman stood up for himself. ''...even you can get angry at times. I can never get angry. I can only divert my anger through other more covert means...until I met you for the first time.''
She began walking again, keeping her hands behind her back. Her pale face, young and beautiful, looked so worn and aged as she closed her eyes. Hachiman felt conflicted, but followed shortly after her. ''Do you remember much of the time when you were younger, especially when you and my mother met?'' She asked when Hachiman walked next to her. One of her eyes was trained onto his, but it didn't feel like an interrogation kind of way. Hachiman sighed quietly as he walked next to her. Reminiscing the past is something he'd done the entire day, so of course he would know. ''...yes, I do. It's something that's very precious to me. Her lessons and attention have made me who I was until I was 13. What you see today is what comes from the lack of meeting her anymore.''
Haruno was surprised by the amount of emotion she could feel in his tone. Nor did she expect him to tell her anything. ''...you and I...we aren't so different. We have become who we are today by the people we've met. We aren't unique in that. You're someone that's a stranger to me, but at the same time has been mentioned by my mother as a potential surrogate brother. Maybe that's why you've looked through me the first time we've met.''
Her mask didn't return to her face, but a small smile still stretched the corners of her mouth. ''...but if we are so similar, then why would you bully me and your sister? Why add those extra negative experiences?'' His words wiped the small smile from her face, causing her to look to the ground. Her posture was much like his normal one. a young woman plagued by painful memories from the past. ''It's like I said. I don't know how to act when I'm angry. My summers were spent with my grandparents in Yokohama. What started as a time of fun became increasingly tougher. My grandmother loved spending time with me, but my grandfather was always away and abusive towards my grandmother and later me. He blamed me for not being a man, for ruining the family business when I would inherit it because it would go to my husband.''
Her words punched through any anger Hachiman felt for her. She wasn't crying or in need of a hug. She was in need of someone that would simply listen to her story. ''Grandmother could only do so much. I wasn't hit or deprived of food, but I was deprived of my own thoughts, my feelings and emotions. I was trained to listen and obey, be strong in public and show pride in my ancestry.'' The last part was spoken with such sarcasm that it would put Hachiman's own to shame. ''I am proud of my ancestry, but mainly of my mother's side of the family...sigh...this training didn't fit me, and my grandfather suggested once that Yukino-chan might be better for it. I couldn't let that happen. From that point on I gave it my all, and I became what you see in front of you. A prim and proper, well educated ghost of a person.''
Haruno finished her story with a dejected chuckle. ''Now you know, Hikigaya-kun. That's who I am. A well carved piece of meat, obedient and ready to be sold to the highest bidder if my grandfather had any say in it.''
Hachiman remained silent. He had no words for the treatment she received. If he had never met Kyoko, there was a chance that Haruno wouldn't have become who she was today. ''...I. I am so sorry. If I had known...'' He started, but was silenced by her manicured fingers on his lips. She didn't look angry or vindictive towards him. ''hmm...thank you, Hikigaya-kun...but an apology isn't necessary at all. Those two months away shouldn't have to make up for the other ten months my mother would be with me. Second, my grandfather made sure to teach me to keep quiet about the sessions at home. Third, when my parents eventually found out about it they cut off all contact with my grandparents. I haven't seen them the last 5 years.'' Her gaze was honest and blameless towards him, but Hachiman still felt like he could, or in the case should, do something to improve their relationship.
''I feel like I should've said yes to your mother's request to meet you and your sister all those years ago. I remember the fondness in her eyes when she showed your family's picture. Now I feel bad for always saying no to her. It probably wouldn't have stopped the abuse, but at least you'd be home a couple weeks earlier over the years.'' Hachiman replied to the girl, who looked back questioningly. ''Hikigaya-kun...why did you always say no? You had a good relationship with my parents, and they with you.'' Hachiman irked from her reply. He hated to sound so vulnerable to anyone. Haruno's eyes lit up in the same way they did when she caught a toy, and closed the distance between the two again and held his arm between her own. A tinge of red formed on his cheeks as he looked away from the devious woman. Her eyes sparkled as she waited for his reply, which he gave with the roll of his eyes. ''...I didn't want you or your sister to dislike me, because I know it would've devastated me and your mother.''
Her initial reaction would've been to laugh, but instead she put her head on his shoulder. ''I can be a little pestering from time to time, but I wouldn't outright bully or insult you...I'm not that bad.'' She replied softly, and gave him a wink. ''...really? I would call it bullying when you try to get me in trouble with your sister or others.'' Hachiman replied with a tired and unconvinced voice.
''fufufu~ Hikigaya-kun, I like to prey on people that I don't like, but I love to tease you since we are close.'' Haruno quickly added as she softly pressed herself into his side again. Hachiman looked at her with a frown and a confused thought running through his mind. ''Huh...close? you and I?...We have talked before but I don't think we are close at all.'' He honestly stated. Hachiman thought he could see a sliver of hurt in her eyes, but she laughed it off. ''Of course we are close, Hikigaya-kun. We have already shopped before, spent time together on a group date, you've seen me in a yukata last year and don't forget...you know me so well that I can't even keep my mask on around you because you see right through it.'' Haruno voiced as she counted with her fingers before softly tapping his cheek with her remaining forefinger.
Hachiman sputtered from her soft taps on his face and blushed as she kept her finger on his cheek. Quietly she murmured ''...I can be myself when I'm with you. It's liberating and a great way to let go of my daily stress. I know you look at me as a woman, but I am safe knowing that you won't try to hurt me.'' These kind words, coming from Kyoko's daughter, being said in such a way that they would ensnare any weaker man made Hachiman's heart throb in a way that it shouldn't.
Haruno grinned and smiled widely when she caught the flush starting at Hachiman's collar creeping up higher and higher. Against his normal way of thinking, he held his hands in front of his face to not to show the effect her words had on him. However, he obediently followed Haruno when she took one of his hands in her own and pulled her along. ''...uhm Hikigaya-kun, you said you had 'an appointment in the area' but where are you going to? Let me guess, you have a ramen date with Shizuka-chan?'' Haruno playfully asked. She allowed him some time to take deep breaths and gather his thoughts. ''uhhh...I do have a dinner scheduled, but I don't think your dad counts as a date.'' Hachiman replied.
Her eyes turned large as she looked at him, the grip on his hand she still held tightened before relaxing again. He had never seen this expression on her face. It was a mix of humor, fear, curiosity and strangely enough relief. ''Heeeh...If you wanted a date you could've always asked Yukino-chan or Gahama-san. I'm sure I could make some time for you as well...'' She replied as she softly bit on the tip of her forefinger. Hachiman sighed again, but felt glad when he saw some of her old teasing nature return to her. It simply fitted her better than being serious and bleak.
''...well you may be right for Yuigahama-san, but I don't know about your sister or you. I mean...I still don't know anything about you.'' Hachiman honestly returned to her. She was deep in thought, unconsciously biting on her lower lip before looking at him in contemplation. The two kept walking calmly, Haruno not letting go of his hand. In the distance, one of the taller buildings in the city that was almost completely in the dark, with only a few lights still lit on the different floors. It was where Hachiman was going to.
Haruno's grip had momentarily tightened on his, her small fingers, though soft, held an impressive amount of force behind them. ''...would you...would you like to?'' She quietly asked. Her eyes bore into his own, as if they would try to find any sign of deception. Hachiman was surprised by her words. He was not against getting to know anyone, but their history spoke for itself. His lips moved, but no sound was made and he looked deep in thought.
''Not sure huh...I can't be too stunned about that.'' Haruno said as Hachiman looked away, his lips stiffly pressed on each other. She smiled, though there was an underlying feeling of sadness.
''...come on.'' Hachiman began as he looked at her. ''You always try to bring me, your sister or others in trouble...'' His reply caused Haruno to smirk and chuckle in delight. ''I can't deny that. I just love to play around with you, because you're so interesting. Whatever happens, you go around the curve and break any existing rules. You decide for yourself how to deal with problems and requests and you fix them however you want. fufufu~''
She tightened her hold on his arm and continued ''I don't care about people with no content. Youths or adults that eat and reheat the same things over and over again. That's why I like you.'' Her eyes held a look of affection, a look that he almost fell for. ''...s-shut up. I don't believe you, but really?'' Hachiman replied with a tremble in his voice. He could feel his heart beat right in his throat. Her eyes still shone brightly into his, but now in a more teasing way. ''...fufufu~ who knows...'' and she smiled mysteriously. Her light purple lips, cold from being outside, started to temp him to overstep any relationship he had with her.
''...heee. looks like you aren't as innocent as you portray yourself as, Hikigaya-kun. Why don't you tell onee-san what you really think of her.'' She seductively asked as his eyes lingered on her lips. It was almost identical to something that Iroha could come up with. ''...ughh...do you really want to know?'' He asked her just to be certain. Her gaze captivated him as she nodded slowly, her hair fell around her face and her eyes looked smokey up at him. Hachiman swallowed deeply from the raw feminine aura bursting out of her body. She gave him a bit more service as she locked their hands, their fingers dancing under the light of the monorail station they stopped at.
''...ughh fine! I think you are aggressive, scheming and incredibly sly.'' Hachiman said. Haruno gasped, her eyes were wide before a bellowing laugh came bursting through her lips. a beautiful jingle came from her throat, enhanced by her pearly white smile as she hang on to him. ''Just you...so seriously...hahaha!~'' She chortled as she began to wheeze in his chest. Some of the stragglers at the station watched this beautiful woman laughing her soul out in the arms of a young man that could be compared to a fire house. Her hands held a fistful of his jacket as she held tightly on to him, completely forgetting where they were. After a few minutes, some silent chuckles were coming from her lips, she let go of his jacket. Her hair was no longer immaculate, some smears of her lipstick were left on his shirt, but her eyes shone far brighter, as if a burden was lifted from her shoulders.
''...fufufu~ Hikigaya-kun. I knew you would be honest, but not this honest.'' Haruno softly chuckled as she wiped the happy tears from her eyes. Her smile was shy and sly at the same time. ''But really, Hikigaya-kun...only bad things?'' She said while pouting at him. Hachiman shook his head, a bit amazed by all the faces she had shown him today. ''I think you're amazing and nearly perfect. If you stop teasing me then you're pretty much perfect.''
An actual tinge of red appeared on her face, though she happily shook her head as she looked at his face. Hachiman sighed when she pulled at his hands again. ''That's not going to happen, I have too much fun teasing you.'' Haruno said, the tinge now turning into a full blush.
She pulled on his hands, momentarily holding their fingers clasped. No longer as an intimate pair of brother and sister, but something more. Something that only the future could tell. Haruno spun him around, as if they were dancing in the street. Enthusiastically she said ''I remember my mother talking about you when I was smaller, she till does at times. Now that she has found you she's not going to let go of you anytime soon. We will spend lots and lots of time together, you and I. A lot of time to getting to know you better...and I promise you will be getting to know me a lot better...Hikigaya-kun.'' Her voice turned from sweet to much slyer at the end, causing Hachiman's eyes to open wider and a scared look appeared in them. Haruno chuckled softly when she noticed his expression, though unknown to him it did cause her heart to ache.
They were only 200 meters away from the tall building where Goro would be waiting for Hachiman that Haruno said she would take the monorail. Haruno took some time to clean Hachiman up. 'Don't forget, you are meeting with a council member, even if he's my father' she said as she put some saliva on her thumb and cleaned her lipstick stain from his shirt. It felt very nostalgic as she fussed over him, and deep inside Hachiman knew that she wasn't truly a bad girl. Her long fingers tried to bring some sort of model to his hair, but her sigh made him know that it was pretty much impossible.
''I guess this will have to do, Hikigaya-kun. Today was...fun I suppose...'' Haruno said when she took her hands out of his hair. Her violet eyes connected to his own, and instead of the usual deviousness there was something akin to kindness and affection. His hands immediately began to feel cold when she grasped them once again before letting go.
He silently watched her walk away, to the stairs that would lead up to the monorail platform. But before she did, Haruno turned around once with a small but genuine smile and spoke ''I hope we can have many more moments like this in the future. Have fun with my father!'' and walked up the stairs after sending him a small wave.
Hachiman's eyes followed her voluptuous backside all the way up to the platform until he could no longer see her, having done the task that he was expected to do. See your friend safely over wherever they go.
After seeing off Haruno, and most likely the monorail train she was on shot out of the station to a place unknown to him, he was nearing his destination. He was close to a 30-storey tall building, one of the tallest in the city. He crossed a small bridge to reach the entrance of the building. Inside there were only people in suits leaving the building. He looked a bit out of tone as he took a seat. Security and some nameless people in suits were surprised, but none approached him.
''...ano...excuse me...are you Hikigaya-san?'' A quiet feminine voice asked. Hachiman, who was staring at his phone hoping for a message from his sister, looked up to see a young bespectacled woman dressed in a professional outfit stare at him. He immediately stood up and introduced himself. ''Yes, I'm Hikigaya Hachiman. Are you Asumi-san?''
She nodded at him, and with a small smile asked him to follow her. They walked over the marble floor right through the security clearance to the golden-brown colored elevators. As they waited, Asumi told him about her work, the building and her boss. Hachiman savored her nice voice as her listened to her. New information was always a plus for him.
The soft jingle of the elevator arriving, causing her to stop talking. The doors opened and as expected no one was there. Once inside she pressed the button '12' and the doors closed. An old radio in the elevator played a song from a long time past. Hachiman appreciated the mix of old and new, as was his country. Modern, but living with traditions that had been started so many years ago.
It didn't take long for the elevator to reach its destination, and with another jingle the door opened. There were countless desks, now unoccupied, but some had their desk lights still on. Hachiman walked after Asumi, who pointed at some of the photos and drawings on the wall. It was all part of history. History of the city, but most importantly the people who made the city. As they walked, the sound of a talking man became louder and louder. They were too far away to for it to be recognizable, yet at that time Hachiman took his chance to get a good look of the city. He was high enough to see the people appearing and disappearing between the street lights, the movement of the monorail trains in the distance and all other traffic driving with yellow lights, and when they stopped there was intense burst of red light.
''It's still beautiful, don't you think.'' Asumi's soft voice said as she stood next to him. ''Even now I can get hypnotized by the way we humans live in a city. We're so small, but we're part of something greater.'' Hachiman nodded and accepted her wise words. After watching for a few minutes longer, Asumi motioned for him to follow her again.
''yep...yep...nonono...I agree, but that's his own fault. Look, I understand but don't put his problems on my plate...'' A male voice said, being heard by Hachiman when he arrived at a room in the corner of the floor. Asumi opened the door and put her finger on her lips, before opening the door wider and he could enter. As he entered, he was suddenly filled with nostalgia. Goro, who looked a bit older and had more fat on his body, was very much still Goro. The man's eyes lit up when he saw Hachiman and waved at him, before pointing at his phone, lipreading 'five more minutes' and continued his conversation. Asumi directed him to a couch right next to the window and wished him a good night. It was her time to finally go home. She walked up to the smaller desk next to a larger one, presumably being used by Goro. She took a long black jacket that was put on top of a black bag. Asumi once more waved to Hachiman and her boss, before leaving the room and closing the door behind her.
''I understand...yeah...yeah...uhu...fine whatever...I'll see what I can do, but I make no promises...yeah...alright...say hi to the kids...I will...goodnight.'' Goro said before ending the conversation. He dropped the phone on the desk before stretching himself, rolling his right shoulder with a grimace on his shoulder before looking at Hachiman. His smile stretched all the way, causing the wrinkles around his eyes to deepen. ''Hachiman-kun. It's been such a long time, how have you been?'' He asked as he gave the young man a hug. Hachiman was surprised as he held his hand out, but was ignored for the much more intimate greeting.
''It's really good to see you.'' Goro said as he held Hachiman in front of him, checking him out as if he was a mirage. ''Did Asumi receive you well?''
He received a nod from Hachiman, who was a bout overwhelmed by Goro's greeting. Not even his own father would great him like this. Which is sad in its own way. They would speak for an hour in the office, where Goro called a restaurant for them to eat. Goro decided to let Hachiman know what 'real food' was, instead of the modest menu of Saizeriya that Hachiman seemed to favor.
They drove to a small restaurant in the city center. It was a more exclusive restaurant as they didn't take any non-reservation customers. Hachiman was introduced to a wide variety of local dishes that made him love Chiba even more than he did. Goro asked him a lot of questions, about last years, school and his family, but mainly his relationship with her daughters. He had a good laugh about his meeting with Haruno and her small smudge of lipstick that was still on his shirt.
Goro asked him a lot about his daughters. What did he know about them, what did they do at school and outside of it. What would he like their relationship to be. Hachiman was surprised and a bit embarrassed but replied to the questions. Later they talked about their own lives. How Hachiman was treated during middle school, the excess bullying and missing his grandparents. Goro was also very forthcoming with his past. He looked in the troubled dark liquid in his glass and told him about politics, missing out on some of the important things of his children, How Haruno and Yukino started to fight more and more, and that his wife has become colder over the years.
''The both of us have had a rough times since we've last met, Hachiman-kun.'' Goro said as they clunk their glasses. ''...so since you've helped us before, are you willing to listen to my request?''
He looked at Hachiman with a sad face. a man that fully relied on his answer. A man that tried, but time and his work had driven him away from his family. A man that was truly remorseful and has tried to make things better, but he needs a helping hand. A hand that was once given to him when he was young.
Hachiman nodded, and kept on nodding. ''Yeah...I will help you.'' He would repay the Yukinoshita parents a thousand times over if they'd ask him. Goro was truly grateful as he smiled widely and rubbed the top of Hachiman's head. ''Thank you, Hachiman-kun. Truly, thank you from the bottom of my heart.'' He continued quietly, sipping from his drink with a relieved sigh. He put his glass down with a soft thump on the wooden table and interlocked his fingers on the table.
''My request to you is as straightforward as it is simple...I want you to become closer to my daughters.'' Goro said with a tiny smile on his face, which broadened when he saw Hachiman's expression. His face turned from pale to a full rosy and his mouth opened for a moment.
''I...uhh...why? Why would you want me to get closer to them.'' were Hachiman's first words when he recovered from the eccentric request. Goro chuckled as he looked in his glass again. He sighed in sadness. ''It's because neither of the two have anyone to call friend, because they are lonely, because they are slowly getting detached and isolated from everything. Because I think it would be good for all three of you.''
Hachiman slumped and laid his head in his hands. ''...okay I can see that for your youngest daughter, but your eldest has good relationships in Soubu and she can be social. I mean...uh...who doesn't want to be her friend?'' He exclaimed after thinking about the request.
''Maybe you're right...maybe you aren't, Hachiman-kun. Over the years they've both gotten better at reading people. Thanks to Yukino's bullying and Haruno's training'' Goro replied, but ended with a small snarl. ''The wealthier I became, the more people flocked to me. Trying get a crumb of attention. These kinds of people will try anything to get closer, so they also tried to get to me through my children. It became hard on them...but I couldn't be there to help them, and that is my failure.''
Goro stared at the glass in front of him with a deep frown on his face, before he looked at Hachiman with a resolved expression on his face. ''But you don't care about that. You don't care about the money and influence that comes with my name, because in the end the Hikigaya family name outweighs my own. That's why only you can help me. Someone we know and trust.''
''...sigh...I really don't mind helping you, but aren't you trying to make me fake something that isn't there. I can't even imagine what will happen when they find out.'' Hachiman replied eventually. The restaurant was empty, except for the two of them and an employee cleaning the tables. Goro shook his head with a small smile. ''Nono...Hachiman-kun remember today. Haruno trusts you, she'd never come to you if she didn't. There's enough 'face' to lose as a Yukinoshita, especially if she's willing to be intimate in public.'' Goro said as he pointed at his shirt once more. ''Also don't worry about Yukino. She trusts you a lot. They might not say it explicitly, but I'm still their father. I know things.'' and sent Hachiman a wink.
Hachiman considered and weighted Goro's words. But there was one thing they didn't take into account. ''...this is a...pretty hard to say...but uhm...I asked your daughter to be friends twice, but she didn't want to be my friend.'' Hachiman said with a gloomy aura exuding from his body. Goro had to chuckle as he looked at Hachiman's expression. He rubbed his head once again, causing Hachiman to look up in his shining eyes. The same violet he shared with his eldest daughter.
''Hachiman-kun. I'm not saying you should be friends. It can be any kind of relationship. I want to take it nice and easy, get to know her...the real her. You are more similar to each other than I could imagine. Yukino's done wrong, very wrong in the past. That's why I've bought that apartment for her, you know the one she lives in. Sometimes we talk, and even mentions a certain club member. She never used your name, but since my wife told me about you, it can only be you. Believe me, she is confused by you, but she's not against you. She just doesn't know how to approach someone that doesn't want something from her.'' Goro slowly explained. ''If you really talk to her when you are ever alone then I know that everything will go well. It's okay to choose for your own happiness, Hachiman-kun.''
Suddenly Goro looked at him with an unhappy expression on his face, and looked like he was going to reprimand him. ''I know it's difficult to put yourself ahead of other people's feelings...but don't let me hear anything about a self-sacrificing act again, do you understand?'' Goro asked with steel in his voice. Hachiman quickly nodded at the man, not wanting to raise his ire. Goro nodded, knowing that he could trust Hachiman on his word, and continued with his second daughter.
''Haruno...she's been done wrong too...'' Goro voiced with a deeply regretful tone, softly shaking his head in disbelief. Hachiman nodded since he heard it right from Haruno's lips but two hours ago. ''...I just...I was so, so mad at my father. There's no place in the family business or our lives for that man anymore. Thanks to him she's become very good at emulating. It hurts as a father to see your daughter smile and act happily, or perform on stage. She's moving perfectly, yet there's no feeling, no heart behind her actions, you know what I mean?''
Goro continued, yet his voice was very dumbfounded ''Yet when you are mentioned there is a spark of life in her eyes, a spark that I haven't seen in a long time. I know you have the same influence on my little girl as you had on Kyoko. She doesn't know how to react on these feelings, and that's partially my own as my wife's fault. so please, Hachiman-kun...please help me...please help my girls.''
The man bowed to Hachiman, awaiting his response. Hachiman pulled his arm with a serious look on his face. ''Whatever you do...never bow to me again. I already told you that I would help you, and I don't intend to rectify that.'' Hachiman said. The man that would act like a surrogate uncle chuckled softly and nodded. ''You're still the same kid from back then, never backing down even with the odds against you.'' Hachiman also chuckled and added ''Only this time my grandmother isn't here to save us.''
Goro was about to call the waiter for a drink, but remembered he still needed to drive home. A sudden thought hit him. ''I heard my wife invited you for the weekend?'' He asked, received a nod from Hachiman as a reply. ''Don't worry about it. Only my family, the Hayamas and some old timers will be coming to the new years party. I do believe Kyoko's parents will be there as well.''
Hachiman was nipping from his drink and his eyebrows lifted up from the news. ''Kyoko-nee-san's parents...wow...I haven't seen them in ages. Like my own grandparents...'' Hachiman calmly replied, but once again he didn't understand or could remember why he has simply never seen them again.
''Don't worry.'' Goro replied as he gave Hachiman a man hug. ''I'm sure they'd love to see you.'' Their conversation had turned much relaxer and the duo stayed until the bartender said they were closing. The two men walked outside, it was starting to get very cold, and the sun had long disappeared beneath the horizon. They walked to Goro's car, where Hachiman decided it was time to say goodbye.
''Are you sure you don't want me to take you home?'' Goro asked. It was late, but it would still be another two hours before the final train of the day would leave. Hachiman shook his head. ''You've given me a lot to think about. It's cold, but I don't mind the walk.'' Hachiman replied calmly as he exhaled in his cold hands.
Knowing how stubborn Hachiman could be, Goro decided not to try and convince the young man. After all, he had to get up early again in the morning, so with luck he'd get a good five hours of sleep. The older man nodded and entered his car. In the light of the car's interior he could see the man uncoil from his long day. He turned to Hachiman and said ''I'm really happy I can rely on you, Hachiman-kun. Keep an open mind and you will get to know two wonderful young women. I'll see you this Friday. Goodnight, Hachiman-kun.'' The car silently drove off into the night, once more lighting up the street in red before turning the corner.
Through the darkness of the main city street, where only some life was left in 24/7 convenience stores, some late night drinking and the pachinko hall making noises. Everyone else was either home or on their way home. His footsteps, uninterrupted by cars or other vehicles, quietly thumped on the sidewalk. His face was exhausted, a weakness he could show when he was alone. He was only accompanied by his thoughts and the icy winds blowing through the empty streets. He had his hands in his pocket, but his cheeks were becoming red of the cold. His figure, often lit up by the streetlights was still far away from home.
He was thinking about tomorrow, or was is it already late enough to be today. His mind occupied by what he could do to help Goro and Kyoko. What could he safely do without hurting himself, but he couldn't. Hachiman kept on walking, or better dragging his feet, as he saw something that could help him. In the darkness he found a vending machine, lighting up its surroundings in sterile white light. When he got closer, the soft buzzing of the machine rang through his ears. He looked inside and found what he needed. Hachiman opened his jacket, with snowflakes gently waving in the wind trying to come inside. It wasn't exactly snowing, but it was close enough. He took out a few coins and pressed the familiar number that would drop a bright yellow can. Since it wasn't just any vending machine, he had the option of warming up his refreshment, which he did.
Finally the hot can was ready to be taken and Hachiman immediately warmed his hands using it. The sugary deliciousness was even more tastier when drunk warm. Hachiman knew he needed it, because he would be walking for a long time.
It would be a long night of thinking. Thinking of what he could do. Thinking of what he wants to do.
The morning came quicker than he thought. He managed to get home just after midnight. His sister and parents were already asleep, yet once his head fell on his cold pillow he couldn't fall asleep. He couldn't come to a conclusion without potentially hurting himself, but it was the only way he could disrupt his relationship with Yukino.
Hachiman was still incredibly tired, his legs hurt from all the walking and he could still feel the cold in his body. However, he was woken up by Komachi who jumped him in the morning, interviewing him where he was and why there was lipstick on his shirt. Hachiman couldn't be bothered to answer her as he was so fatigued from last night and asked her for a fix. In the Hikigaya household it meant that he would give her a double amount of Komachi points for one day if she hugged the life out of him.
Only once a month he could request this service from her sister, and luckily he hadn't done so yet. Her small body filled him with enough energy to last the morning, the rest of the energy he would need had to come from sleeping during class and lunch. Also he'd have to make sure to ingest enough caffeine. Komachi clung onto him, rubbing her body onto his, in a non-sensual way of course, and made sure her smell would cling onto his clothes.
He wanted some of her strength for today, and hugged her back. Komachi felt his arms around her and instead of asking questions she let him indulge for a few more minutes before they really had to get up. Her day was once again filled with studying, but after school she would be coming home. There'd be food waiting for him this time.
Komachi made sure he was well awake, though he had black rings around his eyes, making him look even creepier than usual. Fortunately enough, his eyes warded off the attention of his teachers today and he could spend some good time getting some rest during classes. He used his lunch and his PE classes to take a nap in the nurse' office. He mumbled something about 'my presence being a hindrance to others and staying away is the nice thing to do' to the nurse before finding a bed and getting some additional sleep.
The nurse didn't seem to mind as she thought he looked like a walking corpse, muttering something about 'students being overworked by the long hours' so he deserved some rest in her eyes. His sleep was calm and dreamless. There was nothing, just floating in the light. PE class had finished long ago, and so did Geography and Japanese. The nurse had taken a good look as he was sleeping and decided that it was okay for once to let the student sleep. She'd deal with his teachers.
Hachiman kept on sleeping, but when the final bell of the day rang he was woken up. Drowsily he opened his eyes and saw the nurse's white outfit next to him, one of her hands shaking his shoulder. He nodded to her and she backed away back to her desk to write. Groggily he sat up and stretched himself. A short yawn escaped from his lips as he took out his phone. He was surprised to see several messages. Cold shivers ran through his body when he noticed several messages from Hiratsuka-sensei with promises of pain. Yui had also sent him several texts asking where he was, after having seen him enter the school earlier that morning.
His eyes shot open when he noticed the time. Hachiman threw his blanket off and put his shoes on. He looked around and found his jacket. Hachiman bowed to the nurse, thanking her for letting him stay and left. The nurse waved him off and once again mentioned that she'd inform his teachers. There would be no penalty for him.
With sweat on his forehead he walked through the hallways to the club room. He might've had a good rest, but he hadn't forgotten what he would be doing today. As he walked he noticed his reflection in some of the windows that would allow to look inside the classrooms. He was glad to see that much of this morning's bags around his eyes were gone.
Hachiman had to make one more stop before he went to the club room. He needed a can of his liquid courage. It was in a corner of the school where the only people he'd meet were stragglers or students that took a wrong turn. After school it was always deserted, or better said, in the two years he was at school he'd never seen anyone there after school.
He enjoyed his cool can of MAXX. Watching the clouds go by and stare at Totsuka training with the tennis club. The coffee didn't help much at first, but once the caffeine entered his bloodstream he could feel an upwelling of energy. Hachiman sighed as he could feel the cold liquid trickle down his parched throat. He felt almost as nervous as when he asked the girls for something genuine a couple weeks before. No matter how long he wanted to think about it, he would have to make a choice today.
The now empty can was still pressed against his lips, slowly bending under the pressure of Hachiman's fingers gripping it. There was no monologue, no written idea or scheme that could help him. It would all come down on what she wanted. During last night night's walk he found out what it was that he wanted. No, he could admit it was what he craved for.
Hachiman stared at the yellow can, his small eyes looking back at him before dropping it in the bin. It felt a lot worse than any kind of social suicide he had attempted to make before. Not even Yukino's disappointed eyes after his faux confession in Kyoto was a drop of water compared to the bucket that loomed over his head. He would've liked to imagine the best outcome, but he couldn't. All the disappointments from the past, his heartaches, every time he was let down, uninvited or forgotten. Could he even hope for anything. Regardless, a promise is a promise. One that he intends to keep, no matter what the outcome might be.
Within minutes he had reached the club room. He was about to slide the door open, but decided to knock. After his second nod, a soft spoken voice could be heard, telling him to enter. Hachiman opened the door and was met by two pairs of inquisitive eyes.
''Good afternoon, Hikigaya-kun. We were just talking about you. Yuigahama-san thought you were still in school, where I was following the local police messages. I'm surprised that I was wrong.'' Yukino said with a small smile, causing him to grumble and walk to his seat. When he sat down, he was almost immediately accosted by Yui.
Hachiman irked when Yui held on to his head, almost holding his face in her bosom. ''Where were you, Hikki? Sensei looked really upset.'' Yui asked, before she began to sputter when Hachiman tried to released himself. ''I was out in the nurse's office.'' He replied with a red face when Yui didn't want to let go and pressed her chest in his face. ''Why don't you take some distance from Yuigahama-san, Hikipervert-kun?'' a sharp voice snapped through the room. Yukino didn't look amused at their frolicking. Yui chuckled uncomfortably when she took her hands off of him. ''Was it something bad, Hikki?'' She asked from her own seat.
Hachiman's face was still a fresh pink after she let go of him, and replied ''No. I had a long night and very little sleep.'' Yukino looked interested, but didn't feel comfortable asking if it had anything to do with her father. Soon after the three were back in their rhythm. Hachiman began to read one of his light novels, one he had read numerous times before. He was really into the story, before a sudden hand caught his attention. With a soft clink the hand put a steaming cup of tea in front of him. Yukino momentarily stared at him, his eyes filled with curiosity stared back at her. Unknown to him, she closed her fist nervously. ''I'm...I'm glad it's nothing serious. I wasn't concerned since you're filled with hikigerma. A common cold won't kill you.'' She voiced quietly before walking back to her seat. Hachiman blinked in confusion ''...was she actually concerned or did she find a new way to harass me...'' He thought as he stared at her. She noticed it at once, and immediately looked away again, lifting her novel so he couldn't see her face.
Their inner turmoil was stopped by a sudden knock on the door, and a tall blonde entered the room. She looked around, some confusion in her eyes when she noticed Hachiman but didn't address it, before her eyes landed on Yui. a sudden light turned on in her head when she clapped her hands. ''Yukinon! I'm sorry, I totally forgot! I'm joining Yumiko-chan and the others today for a karaoke tour.''
Yukino rubbed her forehead in exasperation. ''Very well. I'll let you leave early for once.'' She said, causing Yui to gloms her. She looked a bit happy while trying to push Yui away from her. She picked up her bag and wished both of her friends a good night before following after Yumiko and she slid the door close.
Hachiman's eyes lingered momentarily on the door, before continuing with reading his book again. Softly but increasingly louder he could hear ''one-one-zero, one-one-zero'' being whispered from the other side of the table. With a deadpanned expression he looked to see Yukino curled up in her seat, with only her eyes peeking out over her book. If eyes could laugh they were laughing at his expression.
He sighed deeply. Her behavior didn't inspire any confidence in his request. Of course, he was in no way limited to asking today. He had all the time in the world to talk to her. Hachiman closed his light novel and put it on the table. The swordsman on the cover stared back at him with a smile. One hand holding a katana and the other hand holding a princess close to his body. He could no longer recount the amount of times he wanted to be in the protagonist's position. He was definitely an inspiration for his 'eight-graders syndrome.
Hachiman blew in the steaming tea, touching the tea with his tongue until it was cooled down enough to drink. He took soft sips and sighed as the tea warmed his body. It's been a long time since the two had been alone in the club room, yet it was incomparable to the first week of the service club and they were only two members. There was no tension, no anxiousness or outright hostility. They've come a long way since then.
Since they spent most of the time by themselves, there was no need to talk. No fake and pointless conversations that brought them nothing. Time moved slowly and the only sounds that were heard were him sipping or the rustling of pages being turned. Just the way Hachiman liked it. He laid his chin on the back of his hand and closed his eyes, his lips stretching in a small smile and exhaled slowly.
''Hikigaya-kun, can you stop grinning like that. I understand that all teenage boys wish to be alone in a room with a beautiful girl, but you're making me fear for my chastity.'' a cold voice said, waking him up from his special place. Hachiman looked to the left and saw her staring at him. He looked away and muttered ''...you don't like me very much do you...'' in exasperation.
Yukino looked up from her novel and saw him pout with his eyes closed. Not the goodnatured pout, but one of someone that was giving up on something or someone. Her blue eyes dropped down to her lap, before she put her novel open on her thigh high knee socks. ''...that's not...Hikigaya-kun I do not dislike you.'' She whispered, loud enough in the silent room to be heard by Hachiman. He opened one of his eyes and saw the conflicted look in her eyes. She had a remorseful expression on her face, which filled him with enough determination to put his heart's desire out in the open. Sure, it had become clear to him last night and Goro's request had played a part, but it was what he truly wanted.
Hachiman turned his head towards her and sat straight up in his seat. ''We...we aren't exactly friends, you and I.'' He voiced. Her eyes widened momentarily, she didn't know what she expected him to say but it most definitely wasn't this. She could already feel a headache building up in her frontal cortex. ''...sigh...do you really have to ask a rhetorical question?'' Yukino calmly asked. ''Knowing you we will have to start over again. Alright, Hikigaya-kun. Tell me, what is the definition of a 'friend'?''
Her cold voice touched the most inner part of his ears. Hachiman mulled over her words, carefully considering her words before he spoke. He made sure to look her in the eyes and said ''A friend is someone you can count and rely on, much like a family member. Someone that is there for you when you are sick or need a listening ear.''
Yukino nodded, those traits did sound like what a good friend would be. ''Hikigaya-kun...are you certain you're not looking for a girlfriend?'' She asked with a smile behind her hand. ''...hmm...you could be right.'' He replied, causing her to fumble over her next words. Her face turned from amused to grave. A conversation she thought she would enjoy, turned into something she couldn't describe with her feelings. The only thing she did understand was that it was a conversation she did not want to have.
She returned to her book, staring at it with a passive look, though her ears were still focused on the young man, who was once again weighing his words. Hachiman had, kind of, expected the reaction. He didn't want to explicitly say that he wanted something more from her, but he would against go himself if he didn't. If he could not be upfront and genuine about his wants and wished, then how could he expect someone to genuine and open with him.
Hachiman licked his dry lips, cautiously looking at the girl who stared with unmoving eyes at the novel on her lap, her arms falling beside her, and with the hand outside his point of view tensely grasped her skirt. ''...uhm...Yukinoshita. Do you consider us friends?'' He stared at her, watching closely for any sign of agreement or disagreement, but instead she countered his question with one of her own. ''...do you, Hikigaya-kun?''
Her eyes peeked at him, from between her bangs, as he contemplated her reply. ''...I...I am not sure. I agree that we help each other...'' Hachiman was interrupted by her quiet voice. ''Yes...but out of friendship or our obligation as club members.''
Yukino's words, though harsh, were very true. If it wasn't for the club he knew he'd never helped people like Yui, Tobe or Hina with their requests. They were both quiet as they let their words digest. A feeling of coldness overwhelmed his spirit. Yukino didn't feel much better as she lifted up her cup of tea, which trembled in her hands. Hachiman's hands felt clammy and gross, the fear he felt before was now ten times larger. He considered for a moment, a split second, to just up and go. To leave the club room so he could pretend it never happened, but that would be a lie.
''Yukinoshita...'' Hachiman calmly began, though his heart was beating in his throat. ''...does this mean that we can't be friends?''
Yukino nipped calmly from her tea. Her headache was present in full force yet she was determined to think about it. Her reply could shape their future relationship. With a dejected look in her eyes and of her body language, she removed her cup from her lips and put it on the table. She sighed in a way that reminded Hachiman of sadness. Her eyes focused on his, as cold and hard as steel since he couldn't see an emotion behind them.
''Is that what you want our relationship to be, Hikigaya-kun?'' Yukino asked. She crossed her legs, and asked him again. ''If my friendship is what you truly desire then I am willing to be your friend.''
Hachiman's lips twitched almost all the way into a smile, but he couldn't stop thinking about her words. ''...is your friendship what I truly desire?'' Hachiman asked himself. He kept regurgitating her words and came to a terrifying conclusion. ''There is no way I can deal with her if we are friends!'' He began to hyperventilate, causing Yukino to lift one of her eyebrows.
Hachiman began to chuckle in an uncomfortable kind of way. ''I may have misspoken, Yukinoshita-san. I don't think friendship is what suits our characters.''
Yukino blinked her eyes, before she too chuckled, but in an amusing way. ''Hmm..I agree. I don't think i would be good with you as friends.''
She looked more upbeat after his reply, and picked her novel up again. In the end it looked like nothing would change between them, and that their current relationship filled their needs.
The quiet returned to the club room, the tension and painful feelings forgotten, and they read again. Yukino was kind enough to refill his tea again, this time with a small smile when she handed it to him. The end of day was slowly approaching, as the blue of day began to turn a deep orange.
''Yukinoshita...?'' Hachiman suddenly began, turning to the next page of his light novel. The rustling of her pages stopped and he she'd be listening. ''...do you remember what you just said...about what I truly desire?''
''Yes, Hikigaya-kun. I don't happen to forget the things I said five minutes before.'' Yukino replied with some exasperation. A hint of anxiousness could be heard when she asked ''...why...do you...swallow...do you have a desire, Hikigaya-kun?'' Her eyes were onto his when she asked him, her novel forgotten in her hands. Her inquisitive blue eyes were connected on his own, before closing his eyes and nodded calmly.
His were clear and devoid of emotions. ''We have determined that we aren't nor can be friends, correct?'' Hachiman asked her, causing her to look confused but nod anyway. a tinge of red appeared on his face when he continued, he looked away from her but continued on ''...then how about we forget being friends and move one step further?''
Yukino looked at him in confusion, asking him to elaborate. ''Hikigaya-kun, what exactly are you trying to say?'' Her own face began to blossom as well when she caught sight of his burning cheeks. ''Expecting you to read my mind is delusional. So I will tell you in words that you will not misunderstand.'' Hachiman whispered, and turned his eyes to her. ''What I meant...is...well...would you go out with me, to a book store...maybe.''
She absorbed his words, with her mouth wide open, before closing her lips and looked at him with an unreadable expression. It quickly turned to a frown and she stared at him as if he was an idiot. Eventually, Yukino looked quite angered when she closed her book with a snap.
Her refined movements were temporarily forgotten as her chair squeaked when she stood up. Hachiman began to sweat under his collar ''...o-or maybe not.'' He added. Yukino chuckled in a dangerous way as she walked up to him. Usually she hadn't a very impressive stature, but being this close to him, holding her hands in her side and looking down at him. Hachiman felt like he was in mortal danger.
''Don't back down now, Hikigaya-kun. I give you the opportunity to clarify your unusually forward desire. But be warned, the clock is ticking and we're almost out of time. one-one-zero is on speed dial.'' She whispered, dangerously close to his ear shell.
He swallowed his saliva as he looked her in the eyes, who sparked in untold amounts of anger. ''...alright.'' He said, trying to calm her down. ''Please follow my way of thinking.''
Yukino nodded and took a step back, allowing him to convince her with his story. "I will try, Hikigaya-kun, but no jokes.'' She replied with a meaningful look. Hachiman began to explain. ''We are not friends, correct?"
Yukino nodded.
''Yet we have spent a lot of time together."
''Hmm...yes that's true."
''I can't speak for you...but I think of you as something that isn't a friend, but also not a club member.''
She trembled softly, and had an uncomfortable expression on her face...but she also nodded.
He hated feeling so exposed and weak, but he continued. ''I want to know...know if we can come to a genuine understanding. If there is something more that meets the surface, then I'd like see that. So if spending time together can make it clear, I would like to try it. Even if it makes me unhappy in the end.''
Hachiman could see Yukino's face visibly starting to change. A relieved smile and a bright blush, but also deep frowns and a saddened expression in her eyes. In the end, all emotion disappeared and she was left with an unreadable impression on her face.
She pointed her right forefinger at him, trembling but unafraid. ''You...you are a lot more devious than I expected you could be!'' Yukino nearly shouted, and exhausted most of her energy. Her eyes focused on his calm, but nervous form. She could see the sweat gathering on his face. Yukino thought to herself what to do, but one thing she did know is that he deserved a response. After all, she agreed to his earlier request to help him find something genuine. Yukino sighed and chuckled to herself, as she sat on the table, her thighs pressed together as she had a good look at Hachiman. She crossed her arms and reprimanded him ''I expected this to happen one day, where you could no longer control yourself.''
''Yet...you have proven yourself to be a decent conversationalist and you can be surprisingly thoughtful.'' Yukino added in the same breath. Since they were alone, Yukino could permit herself to think out loud. She spent a long time mumbling to herself. ''...hmmmumble...he can capture your attention and is creative at times, but he is stupidly self-sacrificing...i would need to change that...mumb...''
She no longer looked in his direction, as her eyes were glazed over and held her chin in the palm of her hand. He searched through his bag, hoping for a can of MAXX he might've forgotten a long time ago and heard her whisper ''...hmm...I don't like how he can be so depressive at times...but with those eyes and that look I would be too...but it's cute in a weird way...mmm...'' Hachiman grimaced when he listened to her mumbling with one ear, wondering if he had made a big mistake or not. "Uhm...Yukinoshita. If its alright with you, you can forget...''
''Be quiet, Hikigaya-kun. I'm trying to think.'' Yukino's voice snapped as she interrupted him, causing him to slump down in his seat. Though he was elated when he found another can. It wasn't cold anymore, but the sugary deliciousness was still the MAXX he knew.
''Hikigaya-kun...Hikigaya-kun!'' Yukino whispered, before she spoke up louder, causing him to nearly drop his can. ''W-What..?'' He replied, looking on the table if he didn't spill any of it.
''Tell me, Hiki-interestedinme-kun, why do you want to try it with me, instead of someone like Yuigahama-san or Isshiki-san?'' Yukino asked. Her question made sense since even knew that they held some kind of affection for him. His throat bobbed once, drinking what was left in his mouth before pulling the lid from his lips. Hachiman licked his lips before calmly answering. ''It's because I would like to get to know you, the Yukino you are at home when you're by yourself.''
His words caused a connection from the past to switch. She saw flashbacks from the past when she was young and happy. When she played with her sister and she went to the US for school. How the bullying started and Hayama didn't help her in any way, and finally the way she was today.
Yet, all those painful memories were nothing compared to what she felt for her club members. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears as she looked at Hachiman. ''I do feel, but I am emotionless. The thought of losing either you or Yuigahama-san does much more than everything else I've been through in my life combined. That is the girl I am.''
Her eyes lingered unto his form. She could fondly remember the first time she met the delinquent with beady eyes, who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but there, but so did she. She softly chuckled as she remembered it, and look at their situation now. Yukino no longer had any negative feelings towards him, that she knew.
Yukino also had to confess to herself that back then, with his voice filled with emotions and his eyes shimmering with tears asking for something genuine, that it made her heart beat faster. At that time she knew that he was special to her.
She knew that the choice to continue was in her hands. He made clear what he wanted and he would accept the outcome. That was the man she knew him as. But like Goro explained the night before, she was wronged horribly in her life. It wasn't easy for her to break open the shell she had made around herself to spare her from more pain. But now, with her feelings and her unconsciousness saying the exact opposite it was still difficult to let go.
When Yukino wasn't able to make a choice, she remembered what she saw and felt earlier today. The feeling of Yui's hands and chest all over Hachiman filled her with an ugly feeling, but most importantly, it was she that wanted to be in Yui's position. She nodded in resignation. 'Can I...can I choose for myself this one time. Is that okay?' Yukino thought as she looked at Hachiman. She liked him enough to go out with him, and it would only be one date if it didn't go well.
She stood up from the desk, her shoes clacking on the ground, causing Hachiman to look over. Yukino walked back to her seat and took out a notebook from her bag. She ripped out a piece of paper and wrote something down.
Yukino returned back to him and gave him the paper, yet didn't let go. ''I do not like to keep this from Yuigahama-san, but I think it is for the better.'' Hachiman nodded in agreement, yet she still held on to the paper. ''...one chance. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and allow you to take me on an outing, but under the prerequisite you tell me about your past on our 'date' ''
He looked up in her eyes, before looking at the note. It had an address and a time and date. ''...Hikigaya-kun.'' He heard once more, and was surprised when he felt her fingers wrap around his collar. ''...only o-one chance...I definitely won't forgive you if you stand me up.'' Yukino whispered with raw emotion in her voice. Even a girl as beautiful as her can be meek and lack confidence. The two stared at each other with bright blushes before Hachiman nodded and she nodded back, making their date a fact.
Yukino went back to her seat, as Hachiman put everything in his bag and returned his cup to the back of the room to put it next to the teapot. Yukino felt an amused smile spread on her lips when he put his coat on and asked ''Hikigaya-kun, where are you going?'' He turned towards and rubbed the back of his neck. ''...well...today has been tiring and special, so I thought ending the day here would be nice.''
She softly smiled at the young man, raising his hope for an early end of the day, but she shook her head. ''We could still get requests, Hikigaya-kun.'' The next hour was spent with Hachiman sitting on his chair with red cheeks, often hearing small chuckles coming from the girl that sat a bit closer to him than usual. He would often look at her, and when their eyes would meet she would either try to smile sweetly, or she'd look completely smug. For some reason Hachiman felt like he had 'lost' in a race of some sorts.
The orange of the afternoon soon made way for a mix of soft purple and a dying deep orange when the sun sunk beneath the horizon and Yukino said it was time to go home. Hachiman decided to join her and bring the key to Hiratsuka-sensei, who was busy grading today's exams. Hachiman wasn't amused when she said he had to do the exam another time.
Saying their goodbyes, the duo walked through the empty halls and outside, where Yukino would wait for a car to pick her up. An invisible distance that was usually between them seemed to disappear as they walked closer than they ever did. Not touching, but very close to. Neither of them was particularly touchy feely, but than again that could always change in the future.
Once comfortable with where she wanted to wait, the duo stopped and Yukino addressed Hachiman. ''Thank you for waiting and walking with me, Hikigaya-kun. At least some proper decorum has sticked with you, but it is alright to go home. I wish to be alone with my thoughts for now.'' Hachiman nodded and said ''Goodnight.'' before he walked away. Yukino followed him with her eyes, at least she planned to until she could no longer see him, but he stopped after ten meters. He turned around and smiled at her before cheekily shouting ''I'm looking forward to our date!'' loud enough for the others in the street to hear him.
Yukino's cheeks suddenly burned when the other people would stare at her. ''You!'' She yelled back, with a bright blush on her face, but he would only laugh and wave at her, before turning around and walking away.
She could no longer see him, but there was still a small smile stretched on her face. Her fingers traced the gentle curve of her lips, wondering about the feelings he made her experience. Yukino would calmly wait, listening to the people passing her by on the sidewalk, but rarely paying any attention to them. From the distance a black service car was coming closer to her, and stopped right in front of her. The driver opened the door for her as she took a seat in the back of the car. A bit later the car began to move, and she was left alone with her thoughts and a small smile on her face.
That very night, in a large mansion on the edge of the city limits, a man and a woman were having a conversation
''How was your dinner, Goro-kun?'' The woman asked her husband. ''How was he?''
''Well...but lonely.'' Goro replied. ''Did you ask him about our request? Did Hachi-kun accept?''
He chuckled at his impatient wife and took her in his arms. ''Of course he did, Kyoko. You know Hachiman-kun.''
Kyoko nodded, partially in agreement but also in relief. ''I didn't doubt him, I'm sure he can help our daughters.''
''I hope so...I really do.'' Goro calmly replied as he rubbed his wife's back. ''They are more alike than I thought at first. But don't you think it's going too fast and too forced?'' Goro asked his wife.
She hesitated but nodded. ''Maybe...but they are also making up for lost time. Knowing him he is still kind deep inside, we just need to help him get it out.''
Goro nodded after his wife and held his head on top of hers. ''We're going to give them all the help we can, and I hope that even though we've both made mistakes, that we can once again become a happy family. We might even get a son out of it.''
His words caused his wife to hug him even tighter. She couldn't wait for the weekend!
Thanks for reading another of my chapters. I hope you guys enjoyed.
It's gotten a few thousand words longer than I intended, but it worked out imho.
I really, really wanted Haruno to call her father 'Daddy' but I don't think that would fit her.
Let me know what you think in the comments. Favorites and Follows are as always appreciated but not necessary.
