The prince's teary blue eyes stared at the pages. Why was he crying? He wasn't even sure. Nothing was wrong. It had been a normal day, nothing drastic or tragic happened to him or anyone he knew. He hadn't cried in years, as far as he could remember. He was a happy, optimistic person. There was no need to cry, unless it was from overwhelming joy, which he hadn't often felt.
He wiped his tears away when he felt a presence enter the library. It was late, he shouldn't have been awake, anyway. But for some reason, he was unable to fall asleep, so he decided to spend some time reading. That usually calmed him down. But he couldn't even focus on the words. All he could see were his tears on the pages. Stop crying. He told himself, growing tense when he saw a figure approach him. Much to his relief, it was just one of the servants. He didn't say anything to the prince, he just looked at him confused, then walked over to reorganize a few books that were placed on a desk.
The prince sighed, flipping a few pages further into the book. He wasn't even reading at this point, he was merely traveling in his thoughts and somehow got lost. He'd been oddly quiet the entire time, other than the occasional sniffs to hold back some tears. But then, unexpectedly, a small sob escaped his mouth. He wasn't even sure where the hell it came from, but it certainly wasn't intentional.
The servant looked over at him upon hearing his saddened noise, frowning in concern. "Prince Flik? Are you alright?"
"Hm? Oh, yes, I'm fine." He nodded, awkwardly chuckling as he wiped his tears. He'd almost forgotten that he could be heard now. He'd have to be more careful. If anyone asked why he was crying, he'd have no explanation, since 'I do not know why' wouldn't be a valid response. Besides, he had a reputation to uphold. One of optimism and professionalism. If someone say him crying for no reason, what would they think? What would a man in his position and power have to cry for?
But perhaps it would be his upcoming coronation. With his father dead and his mother nowhere to be found, practically being raised by his lords and servants, what wouldn't he have to cry about? Most of his subjects were surprised by how often he smiled and laughed and brushed things off. They knew if they were in his position, they wouldn't have been able to handle it so well. But Flik, oh he was a brave one. Even on his worst days, he never failed to make someone happy. It was basically his job.
As much as Prince Flik enjoyed ruling his kingdom and giving his subjects everything they needed, there were times he often longed for more. He was always a free-spirited kid and it stuck with him into adulthood. There was always a sense for adventure and fun that he could never shake away. And often, whenever he thought he'd finally gotten over it, he'd have a dream about traveling amongst the kingdom borders and suddenly he was longing for something new again.
But it never made him cry before. He tried convincing himself that maybe that was the reason he was supposedly feeling down. But it didn't feel right to him. The idea of being confined in his kingdom for his lifetime never necessarily made him cry, it was just merely a burden on him. He just couldn't think of any reason why he was upset. He didn't feel upset.
In all honesty, the tears didn't even feel like they were his.
