After a sleepless night, Lee arrived at the Jefferson Memorial as the sun was still rising. Dressed casually, he strolled slowly around the base of the immense marble monument that he was often drawn to when he was feeling restless and unsettled. Coming to a stop at the edge of the Tidal Basin, he was vastly relieved that even on a Saturday morning he'd have the area to himself for a while before tourists would begin to swarm the sightseeing destination.

A light April breeze ruffled his hair as he looked out over the Potomac River. The metropolis behind him was still quiet, no doubt that many of its' denizens were still recovering from a busy night in the nation's capital city. He and Amanda had attended a ritzy party at the French Embassy. They had been there on Agency business, however, the thoughts that he'd been having about his beautiful partner were anything but professional.

The ordinarily hyper-focused agent had come perilously close to bungling the hand-off of a computer disc to one of his French counterparts. He had been unable to keep his eyes off of Amanda and when he was dancing with her-purely to maintain their cover he tried to tell himself- he was unable to focus on anything beyond how good it felt to have her in his arms. Luckily, she spotted the foreign agent waiting impatiently at the designated hand-off point and alerted her partner to his presence. Once again, she had come to his rescue.

How did I ever live without her? It was a question that he was asking himself with increasing regularity. It was only recently that he had begun to admit to himself that he hadn't been truly living…he was merely existing. Could we really have a life together? He desperately wanted to believe that the answer was yes, but there was no denying that they lived in two different worlds.

A group of low flying birds drew his attention from the water that he'd been looking down at to the opposite shore. Virginia. It didn't seem so far away. The birds didn't consider the distance between D.C. and Virginia to be insurmountable. Maybe, he shouldn't either…perhaps it was time to take a chance on love. He hadn't hesitated to take other risky steps-ones that offered far less of a payoff if he prevailed.

He turned around and smiled as he took in the sight of the cherry blossom trees in full bloom. It was going to be a beautiful spring day. He had no way of knowing what the future might hold for him, but he was looking forward to finding out.
