"I'm sorry I'm late," the voice of Katie's current boyfriend, Marcus Flint of all people, panted as he was led up to the table that Katie herself had just gotten to. "I hope you weren't waiting too long. I was held up at...work."

Work. In all the years that they'd been dating, Katie had never thought once to ask what he did for a living. It was obviously something that paid well. He was able to take her to the finest restaurants and bars that money could provide. But she found it kind strange that he never wanted to talk about what he did.

"Work problems?" she asked, motioning for him to sit down. She watched the dark-haired grey-eyed man sit uncomfortably in the grey suit he'd worn for the occasion. "Anything I can help you with? I'm pretty good at problem-solving."

"It's nothing," Marcus said, waving the offer of help off. He seemed almost reluctant to speak about his problems. Almost as though his problems would cause her to stop caring for him in a way which was ridiculous. "Here comes the waiter."

Just as if he'd been waiting for the statement to be made, the waiter walked over to the table a big smile stretched across his face. One of those smiles that one wears because they must wear and don't really feel it.

"My name is Anthony and I will be server this evening," the blond man said, setting down the glasses of water he'd been carrying next to the wine glasses. "Can I start you off with some drinks and appetizers this evening?"

"I called in a special order," Marcus said, nodding towards the wine bucket that was already set up with nice red wine that Katie remembers saying was her favorite. "You can bring the appetizers out when they are ready."

"Special order," Katie said, noticing a bit of blood by the edge of Marcus's shirt sleeve. "What's the big occasion?"

"Our three year anniversary," Marcus pointed out, seemingly noticing where her line of sight had gone and pushed the offending shirt sleeve back in place. "You didn't forget, did you?"

"No," she said, laughing and trying to discern what she'd seen. It was strange that Marcus would hide anything from her. "I didn't forget. But I'm happy you didn't forget either. Happy anniversary, babe."

"Happy anniversary, babe," he said, leaning over the table and giving her the most passion-filled kiss he'd ever given her. "How was your day?" he asked as the appetizers started to arriver.

Brushing a lock cinnamon brown hair out her face, Katie took one of the boneless wings that had been set on the table and began to nibble on it. "My day was pretty chaotic," she said, memories of the fight she'd had with her new archnemesis playing over and over again her. She'd beaten the new guy very soundly. She'd sent him flying through a...plate glass window. "Work stuff, you know?"

Marcus nodded his head, taking a bit of one of the potato skins. "I know how that is," he said, laughing. "Some co-workers just don't know how to play nice with others. At least that seems to be the problem I'm having at work."

"What co-worker isn't playing nice with you?" Katie asked, smiling. "I'll beat them up for you if you want?"

"That won't be necessary," Marcus said. "I think I've got this one handled. I let her think she won this round but the next time we meet she's in for a big surprise."

"Sounds like I wouldn't want to be her," Katie said, looking at the sleeve where the blood was as Marcus went on talking about making some big trade at work. It was starting to stain the sleeve of his grey suit jacket a crimson red. "Are you bleeding?"

Marcus looked down at the crimson turned scarlet stain on his grey suit sleeve. He mumbled a silent curse and then excused himself to the bathroom. Katie could have sworn he seemed almost frantic to leave the situation. Like he was hiding something from her. Something huge that she should know.

Earlier that day still played in her mind like a bad radio track. She could still feel the bumps and bruises from the fight she'd had with Chaser, her newest archnemesis. He'd cornered her downtown after she'd saved a bunch of people from a burning build as K-Star.

"K-Star, we meet at last," the man in the expensive-looking blue pinstripe suit and face mask said, eyeing her up like she was some sort of working girl. "I've heard a lot about your work trying to stave off corruption in this area. I would say you were doing an admirable job but you haven't gotten rid of me yet."

"Who are you?" she had asked, resting her hand against her eye masked face and feigning thought. "I don't think I've ever heard of a supervillain called Suit Man yet. But I could have missed the memo on that one."

"Suit Man," he snorted. "That's the most creative thing your mind could come up with." He shook his head. "No. My name is Chaser and I'm here to make sure that you don't reach your goal." He moved into a fighting stance. "Now can we hurry up and get this fight over with. I have to be somewhere in five minutes."

That sounded more strange to her than the fact that he was so upset that she couldn't think of a more creative supervillain name for him. Something else seemed wrong too. This man seemed very oddly familiar to her. Like she knew him from somewhere. His mannerisms screamed...no. That couldn't be right.

"What is it you want?" Katie asked, rolling her eyes. This guy was obviously not that good at his job if he just wanted a random fight. Didn't he know that you had to have a purpose for starting a fight with a superhero? "You have to some sort of reason for wanting to start a fight with me. Either that or you're just horrible at your job."

"I am a very good villain," he snapped at her. "Just asked that fool of a partner of yours. What does he call himself? Keeper." He chuckled darkly. "If I didn't know any better I'd say Keeper has a little crush on me. He's been this close to catching me and let me slip through his fingers on every occasion."

Katie could feel a cold fury taking over her. She didn't like it when people spoke ill of her friends. Especially not Oliver. Oliver had been the only one to support her when she first exhibited powers. He and his boyfriend Percy both had.

"Why would Keeper have a crush on you?" she retorted, moving into a striking stance. "He has a very happy off duty life. He isn't looking for any more than he already has."

"Strike a nerve, K-Girl," the smirk flitted across his face of its own accord. The grey eyes that stared at her sent shivers down her spine and also felt familiar. "Are you a little upset that I'm implying your partner wants to…"

"Shut up!" she screamed, throwing the first punch in the fight. "It's K-Star!" She lifted the man up over her head like he was a rag doll and held him aloft for a while. Why she didn't know. Maybe it was to prove a point? Maybe it was to prove that she could do it? But whatever the reason, what goes up must always come down and most times in the most violent of ways.

Chaser went flying through the air as she threw him like weighed less than nothing. She could hear his screams as he went flying. The screams of a man who knew he'd pissed off the wrong person. Then came the sound of shattering glass and without waiting to see what else happened Katie raced off to change out of her K-Star costume. She had a date tonight and she wasn't about ready to be late.

The scraping of chair legs on the floor told her that Marcus had returned from the bathroom. She looked up picking up her wine glass and taking a sip. The strange sense of the familiarness she'd had with her enemy earlier came back to her. It felt just as strong as she looked into her boyfriend's grey eyes as the dinners arrived.

"Bonne Appetito!" the waiter said, backing away from the table after a look at Marcus. The man seemed almost afraid of making Marcus upset. "Please let me know if there is anything else I could get for either of you." With that said the waiter walked away from the table and towards the back of the restaurant.

"That was weird," Katie said, picking her knife. She knew right then and there that the reason Marcus was hiding what he did for a living was because he was a supervillain. "How long?"

"Excuse me?" Marcus asked, raising a raven-colored eyebrow at her. "I don't know what you mean. How long what?"

Stopping the raising of the fork to her mouth, Katie stared at him incredulously. "Don't lie to me," she said with a sigh. "I don't like it when you lie to me."

"I know that babe," Marcus said, putting his hands up in surrender. "But I have no clue what you are talking ab…"

She reached across the table and yanked up his coat and shirt sleeve to reveal the long still bleeding cut on his arm. A cut that would probably be mirrored on the other arm too. A cut he would have received from crashing through a plate-glass window into a convenience store.

"How long have you been a supervillain?" she asked, folding her arms over her chest. The flare of her blue eyes making Marcus look more afraid than she'd ever seen him. "What powers do you have?"

"I have the power to read people's minds and fly," he said, sounding like he was leaving out more but she would figure that out at later date. "I've been a supervillain since I found out your partner, Oliver, was a superhero."

"You always have to do the opposite of what Oliver does, don't you?" she asked, giving him a look that told him clearly not to answer that question. "You have so much potential to do good. Why can't you just become a hero?"

"Maybe it's not in the cards for me to be a hero?" Marcus said, looking at her sadly. "Maybe that just isn't me? If you can't handle that maybe we shouldn't be dating, to begin with?"

"I didn't say that I couldn't handle it," Katie sighed. "But maybe if anything you could be more of an antihero. Play both sides of the game."

"I'll play whatever game you want, as long you chase me," he said, kissing her nose and making her giggle. "Now what do you say about us taking desert to go and me showing you how my powers truly work at home?"

"I would love that," Katie said, allowing Marcus to help her out of her chair and head towards the door. Their life may have gotten a tiny bit more complicated but they'd make it work in the end. It was what they did.

I hope you all enjoyed My Villain My Love as much as I enjoyed writing it.
