It hurt.

Her heart was hurting.

She glanced across at him waiting for the elevator, letting him to get in before she made her way over. She had successfully managed to avoid him for the last 24 hours; it eased the pain a little but nowhere near enough. Becoming chief or surgery was something she had worked hard for over the years, she had to take this opportunity with both hands and give it her best shot. She couldn't do that while being with Neil, she couldn't be objective when it came to him. She believed in him more than anyone else would and she wanted to protect him more than she should.

Glad to be heading home to bed, she got in the elevator with her bike helmet under one arm and her rucksack in the other. It had been a long shift, hard work at the best of times, never mind when you're going the long way round and taking the stairs everywhere to avoid people. She'd stop avoiding him tomorrow, or maybe the day after when it hurt just a little bit less. Lost in her thoughts she left the elevator and made her way out of the hospital towards the car park.

"You're avoiding me."

She froze as she heard his voice behind her; she hesitated before slowly turning around looking into the ground.

"You ended it and now you're avoiding me, I don't get it?"

"I'm sorry, I just needed some space." She answered him honestly, still avoiding looking at him. She couldn't bear to see the hurt behind his eyes or smile.

"You made the right call about us; it couldn't work now your chief. Don't be feeling guilty, we have to accept it for what it is." He took her hand in his. "We had a good time while it lasted"

"It hurts" she whispered finally looking up to meet his gaze.

"I know" he half smiled at her, before dropping her hand and heading towards his car.

She turned on her heel, and headed in the other direction. She didn't want to go home anymore; there were too many memories of him there so she headed to one of the nearest bars on foot. A drink or 3 would help ease the pain if only for a little while.

"Dr Lim?"

Hearing someone say her name brought her out of her thoughts, she had no idea how long she'd been staring down at her fourth bourbon.

"Dr Reznick, hi" she greeted the young doctor taking a sip of her drink. "I didn't realize you came in here." She had chosen this bar specifically because it wasn't usually used by anyone at the hospital.

"I come here because nobody else comes here, at least I didn't think they did" Morgan shrugged sliding in the seat next to her boss at the bar. "And call me Morgan when were not at work."

"What's your poison?" she asked the young doctor next to her, finishing her drink in one swift gulp, signaling the bar tender over and indicating that she wanted the same again.

"Red wine please" Morgan smiled at the bar tender before turning back to her boss. "So what brings you here alone on a Wednesday night? Shouldn't you be home acting all lovey dovey with Dr Melendez?"

"It's none of your business" She shot back a little too sharply, before taking a sip of the drink that had just been placed in front of her.

Morgan just shrugged, swigging back half her glass of wine in one go.

"You should take it steady you're on shift early tomorrow."

"Not anymore" Morgan answered shortly, before swigging back the rest of her wine, signaling to the bartender that they wanted another round, even though Audrey had barely touched her most recent drink. She could see the confused look on her superiors face but offered no further explanation choosing to focus on the barman pouring their drinks. Dr Glassman had told her to take the nest day off and think about what she wanted to do with her hands and to consider telling some of her superior surgeons.

She turned to face Morgan, finally taking notice of the upset look on her face. Their eyes met and they could both see the pain the other was feeling. "Neil and I broke up."

"I'm sorry, but It was never going to work with you being chief anyway, men hate to have a woman as their boss, it must be even worse if that woman is their girlfriend. You should focus on your career and think about men later they'll only hold you back."

"If only it was that easy." She finished her 5th drink and pulled her latest one towards her. "So what's up with you anyway? Or are you just being friendly to suck up to the boss again?"

"I recently got a diagnosis I'm not happy with" Morgan shrugged not wanting to offer much more. "I'll figure something out."

"Tell me, maybe I can help?"

"I don't think anyone can help, Glassmen says there aren't really any treatment options"

"What have you got Morgan?" She could tell the woman next to her was upset, even if the six drinks she'd had were clouding her mind a bit, and making her feel a bit woozy.

"I've got rheumatoid arthritis in my hands" Tears were forming in Morgans eyes. "How can I be a surgeon if my hands don't work?" A single tear made its way down her cheek, she refused to let anymore fall.

"Oh Morgan" she looked at her with pity, and then took her hands in hers. "We'll figure something out."

All she got was a small nod and slight smile in return. She dropped her hands and turned back to her drink, and together the two doctors drank and made small talk for the remainder of the evening each providing the other with some company in their sorrow.
