Hello friends, and welcome to my next big endeavor! A complete retelling of How To Train Your Dragon 2, entirely through Toothless' eyes!

I had so much fun with the first movie, I just have to do all 3!

As of the posting of this first chapter, I have about a third of the movie written, so it should be updated fairly regularly.

Please enjoy the first chapter of How To Be a Leader!

Chapter 1: Just Us

Today was supposed to be just another dragon racing competition.

Of course, there's never been any real competition; not with me and Hiccup around. Why? Because we've never lost a single match. How could we? We're Hiccup and Toothless, heroes of Berk, the pair that changed an entire island, the human and Night Fury who proved generations of misconceptions wrong. We would never let anything come between us, and that's why we're the best.

Plus… even with a missing tailfin, there's still no dragon like a Night Fury.

As I said, today was just supposed to be another dragon racing competition. But instead, it turned into something so much better.

Because while racing with the other humans and dragons is fun, there's nothing quite like when it's just us, my human and me.

It takes only a split second to leave our home island of Berk in the dust. Or in this case, in the ocean spray.

Hiccup lays himself flat against me, and we speed over the surface of the water, kicking up waves in our wake. I flap my wings as hard as I can, gaining us even more speed, as Hiccup uses his hand controls to hold my tail steady. We lean to the left, weaving through a pack of Thunderdrums, and then Hiccup adjusts himself so he's sitting back on my saddle. Without missing a beat, he pushes down on my right stirrup, pulling my fake tailfin straight down and sending us into a tight roll, right under a surfacing Thunderdrum.

"Yeah!" Hiccup yells, and we begin climbing, as high into the clouds as we can go before the air gets too thin.

We soar between several clouds, then make a big loop, hanging upside down for a good few seconds before dropping into a freefall. Once we break through the cloud cover, I extend my wings and pull up, sending us back into the sky. Hiccup adjusts my tail again, and I pull my wings as tight as I can to my body. We begin spiraling as we ascend higher, until even seasoned flyers like ourselves can feel the vertigo. I allow my momentum to slow, and after a moment of hang time we begin plummeting toward the sea once more, now belly up. I let out a roar, and after several seconds of freefall, I flip over, reopening my wings. Then together, we soar through the mist, completely free and in sync. Hiccup extends his arms, making his own wingspan to match mine, and we glide under several Timberjacks.

I hear the creak of Hiccup stowing my hand controls, then he pats my neck. "What do you think, Bud? Wanna give this another shot?" He asks, his voice muffled by his metal helmet and the wind. It takes only a moment for me to realize what he's talking about. I grumble up at him, narrowing my eyes and lowering my ear plates.

"Toothless! It'll be fine!" He says, though I highly doubt that. In the two years the DragonFly has existed, in its many different forms, it's never ended well. Still, I don't protest when Hiccup slides his prosthetic's lever into place, then reaches down and locks my tail in that position. "Ready?" He asks, unhooking his tether from my saddle.

"You're an idiot," I reply, but he doesn't seem to care about my clear displeasure. After a moment, I feel his weight leave me as he slides off my saddle, yelling as he begins plummeting toward the ocean. Once I get a clear sightline to him, I propel myself downward, chasing after my falling friend. I catch up to him, and we spiral through the clouds, face to face. Hiccup looks at me, and even though I can't see his expression through his helmet, I know he's grinning. So, despite myself, I smile back, my tongue lolling out of my mouth.

We break through the clouds, and Hiccup slides his hands through a couple loops on his pantlegs, before extending his arms and unfurling his wingsuit. As soon as he does, he catches loft and shoots upward, prompting me to follow suit with my own wings. After a shaky moment of him stabilizing himself, he hits a button on his armor, giving him his own fin.

We glide above wisps of clouds, the sun warming our backs. Hiccup looks back at me, clearly proud that his invention is working as well as it is. And I must admit, this is the longest it's been successful during a test flight. Maybe he's finally figured out the secret.

Because we're gliding, we're both losing altitude; however, Hiccup is losing it much faster than I am, since his wings aren't quite as real as mine. To fix this, I fire a short plasma blast under him, the heat from my fire lifting him back above me.

"Woah!" My human yells at the first blast, then realizes what I'm doing. I fire several more, keeping my human aloft. "Ah, this is amazing!"

I have to say, it actually is. I can't believe the DragonFly has finally worked!

"No longer amazing!"

Perhaps I spoke too soon.

I look up, only to see a sea stack has appeared from the mist, directly in our flight path.

"Toothless!" Hiccup cries, and I break from my glide, flapping my wings to get to him.

"Hang on!" It's difficult to get anywhere with my prosthetic fin being locked in one position, and I can't make myself fly fast enough to catch him. Just before we hit the rocks, I shoot a plasma blast into them, then pull Hiccup into my grasp, wrapping my wings around us. We crash through debris and foliage, snapping several branches and saplings, before coming to rest at a grassy cliff.

That was too close.

I let my head hit the ground in relief, then release my friend from my grasp. I hear the click of him switching his riding foot to his walking one, then he steps away, and I get to my feet as well, shaking my head clear.

"That really came out of nowhere," he says, then from behind us, a loud cracking sounds. We both turn in time to see the sea stack I shot crumble, collapsing into the ocean.

But at least we're both safe.

Technically the movie opens with dragon racing... But Hiccup and Toothless weren't there, so-

Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed and will tune in for more!
