Everyone was standing in the crowded conference room waiting. It got quiet when Bailey and Owen walked in together while having a conversation and stood at the front of the room. Bailey said "Can I please get everyone's attention? We don't have a lot of time."
She waited for the room to go completely quiet before she started "We are going on lock down and I need hand out assignments." Someone in the back asked "The hospital is going on lockdown?" Bailey shook her head "No, the state is." This caused everyone to start talking at once. Owen stated very loudly "Please, everyone be quiet and listen and we will answer all your questions."
Bailey continued, "I just had a meeting with the governor, due to this virus, he is shutting down the state. Only Essential Personnel will be allowed to be out and about. Some of you, I will be asking to step up and work more, some of you have underlying health conditions or small children and you will be sent home. That is not up for discussion, I know many of you will want to step up and I do appreciate and respect that, but this is too serious and I will not compromise the health and safety of my people. After this meeting you will be receiving an email letting you know if you are being sent home. As much as I feel the need to be here as your chief, I am one of those people that has an underlying health condition. Dr Hunt has volunteered to step up and act as interim chief in my absence. I will still be working remotely but Dr Hunt will be here to handle the day to day. I am asking that if you are on the list to continue working, that you go home and pack a bag, make arrangements for pets, mail or anything else. Once the lockdown starts, I expect you will be here for several weeks."
Bailey looked around at the room "For those of you being sent home, I suggest you stock up on essentials, several weeks worth. Once this starts, I am afraid some things will be harder to get. Now, we have the privilege of advance knowledge, not everyone will, but I guarantee that it will get out, so don't hesitate. I am not trying to cause panic or undue stress but this is new territory for us. Our elective procedures will be discontinued and we will only take emergent cases through the ER. We have already been reducing our patients and we have several empty floors. For those of you staying at the hospital, there might not be much for you to do, but be rest assured you will be compensated for your time. We have several representatives from HR set up in the cafeteria, they will answer any questions you have." Right then a mass of notifications were going off "That will be the email we sent to let you know who is being sent home. If you think you qualify for being sent home and we have you working, please talk to HR." With that she left the room.
Everyone looked at their emails and started to discuss their status. Arizona knew that she was being sent home, she had medical history and a small child. Sofia had only come back to Seattle 3 months ago. Amelia and Link were discussing their situation and Meredith and Callie were talking by the door. Maggie and Arizona were talking and walking at the same time, when the approached the others Maggie said "I'm staying at the hospital. Meredith will you be okay with just you and the kids?" Meredith laughed "Well, I'm guessing that Amelia and the baby will be staying with me from the looks of it." They all looked over to Amelia and Link hugging and then Link walking away, Amelia joined them and Meredith said "Is he staying? Amelia nodded "Can the baby and I stay with you?" Meredith laughed again "Of course. So I guess we need to get a list of what we need, how long do you think this will last?"
Maggie responded "Well, I know in other countries, people have been on lock down for several months." At that Callie chimed in "Several months? I don't want to be away from Sofia that long." Callie had moved back to Seattle when it was Sofia's time to be with Arizona.
Arizona responded "I don't want to be without her either, she was gone for a whole year." Meredith looked between the two women and said "Well, it's not ideal, but you both can stay together, that way Sofia will get to spend time with both of you, and Arizona, you just bought that new house, there is more than enough room." Callie looked at Arizona with an expression of hope on her face and Arizona sighed "Okay, I guess we can do this, I mean we are adults, and it's for Sofia." Callie smiled and said "Thank you Arizona, I guess we need to get a list together." Arizona replied "Yeah, I guess. But I'm talking to Bailey about taking one of the iPads home, I want to be able to access my patients records." There was a agreement all around about that and they headed to find Bailey.
Later that night Callie and Arizona were walking each with a cart through the grocery picking up what they thought was necessary for the next month at least. Arizona laughed when Callie picked 2 huge cases of toilet paper. "Laugh all you want, you will thank me later." They made their way down the aisles, each placing their favorites in the carts when Callie picked up some hot sauce and asked Arizona "Do you have any hot sauce at your place?" Arizona shook her head no "I can't eat spicy food anymore"
Callie stared "Since when? You love hot sauce." Arizona replied "Since I have an ulcer." Callie just stared, she had been gone for a year and before that she hadn't really been around Arizona enough to know anything about her."I'm sorry, Arizona." Arizona shrugged and moved on. After they left the grocery, Arizona stopped at the liquor store causing Callie to laugh " Hey, you got your toilet paper, I'm getting my necessities."
They paid the sitter with Arizona giving her extra since she wouldn't be needed for a while and unloaded all they bought and Callie left to go pack her bags. She agreed to bring takeout when she returned. Sofia was excited, she didn't realize what was going on. She just knew she was going to have both of her Moms together. Arizona didn't know what to think about the whole situation, she obviously knew how serious the situation was and was worried. She had called her parents earlier to let them know what was going on, she didn't want them to worry. Her Mom was very happy that Callie would be staying with her. Arizona told her Mom not to look at it like that, they were doing this for Sofia and that was the only reason. Not long after, Callie returned with her luggage and dinner. They chatted, mainly letting Sofia lead the conversation.
They watched a movie before putting Sofia down for the night. Callie said "Arizona, thank you for letting me stay with you. I know it probably wasn't what you wanted but I do appreciate it." Arizona replied "Don't be silly Callie, this is what was best for Sofia and quite frankly, I'm going to need your help when she starts her online learning. I don't have the technology knowledge that you do and we can't have her getting behind." Arizona showed Callie the guest room and they both went bed.
Day 6 of quarantine and Arizona was bored. She had bugged Alex so much at the hospital that he was no longer taking her calls. She had reviewed all the charts and just wanted to go over them again. She called Jo and had a half hour discussion and Jo assured her that she would have Alex call her back. She read articles, researched procedures and actually wrote a few articles that she was behind on. She walked int the office to see Sofia and Callie working on school work. She watched for a few minutes and walked away. She looked out the front door and turned around and looked out the back door. She turned around and almost ran smack into Callie. "You're going to wear a path in the floor." Callie said smiling. Arizona groaned "I'm bored." "I can tell." Callie smirked "Sofia is almost finished, maybe we can go for a walk?" Arizona nodded. "Okay."
Day 12 and Callie was opening cabinets and shutting them and muttering in Spanish. "What are you doing?" Arizona asked. Callie said "I was watching that cooking show and this recipe called for Coriander and you don't have any." Arizona replied "Well, I don't cook." Callie scoffed "I know. I can tell." Arizona shook her head "No, you don't get to complain about that. I tried to learn and you didn't like it." Callie rolled her eyes "I don't remember that" "It's true, Mark and I were cooking together and you made us stop" Callie said "Well that had nothing to do with the cooking, that was because you and Mark were always together." "Hmmmm, really?" Arizona responded sarcastically and walked out of the kitchen.
Day 18, Sofia was whining "There's nothing to do." "Go read a book, go color, go clean your room." Arizona said to her daughter who stomped her foot and stormed off. "She gets that temper from you." Arizona told Callie. "What are you talking about?" Callie asked innocently. "You know exactly what I'm talking about." Callie got up and stormed off. "Hmmph, see?" Arizona said to an empty room.
Day 24 Arizona was standing at the front door waiting. "What are you doing?" Callie asked. "I'm waiting" Arizona replied. "For what?" Callie asked right as a car pulled up. Arizona opened the door and stepped out onto the porch. Out walked Intern Parker "Hi Dr Robbins. I have your stuff. I'll just leave the bags here." As he stood at the driveway. Arizona thanked him and said "I'll Venmo you, how is everyone at the hospital?" They stood on the porch and listened to all that Dr Parker had to say until he had to leave. Once he drove away, Arizona ran to get the bags. Callie helped her carry them and started to take stuff out and picked up a bottle of Coriander. Arizona then handed Callie a sudoku book out of the other bag. Callie just smiled, there was fresh fruit and vegetables and most importantly ice cream.
Day 30 Sofia fell asleep on the couch, she had received a package from Callie's Dad with all kinds of new toys. It couldn't have come at a better time. This lock down was taking its toll on everyone and it was hard for a 7 year old to understand. Callie carried her to bed and came back. They had opened a bottle of wine and organized a zoom call with Meredith and Cristina. After another bottle of wine they were all laughing and talking about old times. Cristina said "I knew you two would get back together." Arizona blushed and Callie stuttered "What?" Meredith just laughed.
Day 40 Arizona was yelling at the television when Callie came and took the remote and turned the TV off "No more news for you." Arizona just sighed "That idiot is lying and he's going to get people killed" Callie replied "I know, and we don't want it to start with you and high blood pressure so no more press conferences for you. Amelia said that Meredith threw the remote at their TV and broke the screen." Arizona smiled "I am so glad you are not in New York" Callie smiled back "Me too."
Day 48 Arizona was watching a movie when Callie walked in and Arizona was sobbing. Callie wrapped the blonde in her arms and said "You know this movie makes you cry." Arizona snuggled in closer and said "Sometimes you just need to cry." They laid in each other's arms until Callie could hear soft snores.
Day 56 Callie was making breakfast when Arizona walked up behind her and wrapped her in her arms and just watched over Callie's shoulder as she continued to cook. They were both smiling. Things were changing between them and it was good.
Day 60 Callie hung up the phone and said "Bailey is making plans for us to start coming back." Arizona saw the stress on Callie's face. "I guess our bubble is about to be popped." Callie leaned down and kissed Arizona "I guess so" Arizona took a chance "Callie, move in here with us. Things are so great and I want us to be a family again." Callie studied Arizona "Are you sure?" Arizona nodded and kissed Callie "Always" she said.
