'Why the hell am I even here? This is pointless.' thought Izuku Midoriya as he and his class had been forced to attend a field trip to the Museum of Natural History in Musutafu. 'I can't believe Auntie Mitsuki made me come here. This is so stupid.'
"Midoriya… Midoriya, are you paying attention?" asked the teacher. Izuku just wanted to go home, if you could call it that. It never really felt like home with his mother gone. It just felt like a sleeping space. Mitsuki and her husband had rented a studio apartment for him to stay in once his mother had passed. Izuku had since then taken up "art," which led to him tagging walls and billboards every now and then and had started to dress in a more "street" style apparel.
He wore jeans and a dark gray zip up hoodie that was covered by a denim vest with his own design on the back. He had designed his own symbol that consisted of two graffiti eagles, one red and one blue, back-to-back, in the shape of a star. He topped off the look with a dark red beanie.
"This next piece is believed to be a part of an asteroid from Planet XC-11's explosion. Not much is known about XC-11 except that it was one of the most uninhabitable planets in the known universe. This was mostly due to the fact that it is highly radioactive and can kill you within 5 minutes..." The tour guide began explaining more and more about the space junk and how dangerous it was. 'Why the hell is it here then?' thought Izuku.
Just as his group had surrounded the sharp rock in the glass dome it had begun to surge blue and emit a low pulsating sound. "What's it doing?" asked the teacher. "I'm not sure. I've never seen it do that before." Izuku had moved to the front of the group to see what the big deal was about.
As he got closer and closer to the object it began to vibrate faster and created a bling glow. Izuku held his hand out towards it in an attempt to shield his eyes from it's intense glow. However this just caused it to vibrate even faster and fly out of it's glass enclosure and towards Izuku. It broke apart and turned into some sort of blue gas and rushed up Izuku's arms and forced its way into the pores of his neck.
Izuku began to float and convulse in the air as a blue bubble surrounded him. This continued for a couple of seconds, before he fell to the floor as his lifeless body began emitting steam.
The class stared on in shock at their classmate as their teacher ran to the boy's aid the museum staff called an ambulance. "What the hell just happened to Deku?" asked an overweight boy with bat wings to his small group of friends. "How the hell would I know?" said the ash-blonde Katsuki Bakugou.
Bakugou had begun school with Izuku and were even friends for a while, that is, until Katsuki got his quirk and began tormenting everyone who he deemed weaker than him. This continued all the way from kindergarten to the current last year of middle school.
"Welcome home, brat. How'd your trip go?" asked Mitsuki, Katsuki's mother and Izuku's surrogate aunt. "It was boring just like I said it would be, you old hag." He responded as his mother prepared to yell at him. She wouldn't get the chance to, however, as she received a phone call.
"Hello… Yes, this is she… Oh my God… I'll be right there." She grabbed Katsuki by the ear and pulled him towards the door. "'It went fine', huh?" she hissed as Katsuki now knew what the call was about.
"Oh my God, Doctor, is he gonna be ok?!" asked Mitsuki to the Doctor, seeing Izuku in a hospital bed with tubes going every which way. "I'm sorry, Miss, but your son is in a coma and he may never wake up." This simple sentence caused her heart to drop as Katsuki's eyes widened at the news.
"C-Can I see him?" she asked.
"I'm sorry ma'am, but the rock he 'absorbed' was said to be highly radioactive and could be a danger to people who aren't professionally prepared for contact."
The woman began to tear up. "I-Is there anything t-that can be done?"
The doctor just shook his head. "I'll give you guys some time." he said as he walked away, leaving the two to just look through the window at the comatosed boy. Katsuki comforted his crying mother.
Izuku awoke to the beeping sound of a monitor and a needle in his arm that led to an IV bag. "What the hell?" he rasped out, his voice still hoarse from the tubes that they used to assist his breathing a week prior. Izuku saw his clothes piled up on a chair in the corner of his room.
After getting changed, Izuku walked snuck out of the hospital, careful to avoid any doctors as they would just tell him something like, "You're not better yet." or make him stay for any longer. After putting his hood up he walked by the receptionist and made his way outside.
He walked past a McDonald's and his stomach growled very, very loudly. 'Didn't they feed me in there?' He made his way inside and ordered a teriyaki chicken sandwich and made his way to his seat. As the employee brought him his food she greeted him with a "Happy Mother's Day!" He looked at her confused, 'Mother's day? ...Wasn't that two months ago?.'
He quickly checked his phone for the date and saw that it was indeed mother's day.
'How long was I out?!' He looked at the year. 'I'VE BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL FOR TEN MONTHS?!' He quickly got up and left, before rushing back in and grabbing his sandwich.
"Brat, get your ass up and get the door! It's probably your father." said Mitsuki to her son who was currently playing a game.
"SHUT IT, YOU OLD HAG!" he yelled back, he proceeded to get the door anyways.
He opened the door and his eyes widened in surprise. "D-Deku?"
"Hey Kacchan, long time no see, haha." said the boy, rubbing the back of his head.
"Katsuki, who is it?" said the woman coming around the corner.
"Hey, Auntie. It's been a while, huh?"
The lady quickly ran over to the boy and brought him up into a tight bear hug. "H-Hey, I'm injured here. Haha"
She put the boy down and littered him with questions about his well-being, to all of which Izuku assured her that he was fine.
"Hey nerd!" yelled Katsuki. He held his hand out towards Izuku, "Welcome back, I guess."
Izuku was stunned, 'Did he have a whole change of personality in 10 months or what?'
"Don't think anything of it, nerd. I'm just glad my punching bag is back."
Izuku laughed and went to shake Katsuki's hand as he definitely was not willing to have any more physical contact with Izuku than that. However, as soon as their hands met, a flood of smoke and fire flooded from Katsuki and made its way up Izuku's arms and forced its way through his pores.
They quickly let go of each other. "Kacchan, what was that."
"I didn't do that!" Katsuki responded, just as shocked as Izuku.
"Well I sure as hell didn't do it!" Izuku said, getting up.
"Why the hell would I do that, you fucking nerd?"
"Hmm, maybe it's because I don't have a quirk!"
The two were now knocking heads before Katsuki noticed something. "D-Deku, look at your hands."
Izuku looked at his hands and noticed that his hands were releasing small explosions and dark black smoke was rising up his arms. "What the-" he said before the smoke alarm went off.
"Katsuki did you set the alarm off again?!" yelled the woman downstairs, causing him to look towards the door. "Uhh-" he said as he turned to look towards Izuku, only to see nobody there. "What the hell is going on?!"
"What the hell is going on?!" asked Izuku as he was now on the roof of the Bakugou's home, smoke pouring out of the vent he had just traveled through. Izuku tried to move forward, but felt his body rip apart and form again at the edge of the roof. He regained his balance, "Stop it, stop it, stop it!"
"Focus, Izuku!" he said as he was finally able to take a step backwards. He was looking for a way down when, "How the hell did you get on the roof?!" yelled Katsuki from the front yard.
"I don't fucking know, man! Your guess is as good as mine!" he shouted.
"Well get the hell down here!"
"Oh, good advice! Now, how the hell do I do that?!"
"I don't know, jump?!"
"Are you stupid?! I can't jump from here, but..." he trailed off.
Izuku thought back to what it felt like when he moved through the air a moment ago, 'I thought about moving to the edge to look for a way down and I did, so...' he looked towards the spot in front of Bakugou and took a step forward. He instantly felt his body rip apart and move towards the blonde.
Bakugou watched in shock as Izuku broke apart into flakes of ash and flew down towards him, leaving a trail of grey and orange from the roof that dissipated within a second. Izuku quickly reformed in front of Katsuki. "Dude, I think I gave you a quirk."
The two made their way inside and told Mitsuki about it, which she didn't believe at first, until Izuku held up his hand and created a small explosion and released smoke from his forearm.
She promptly told Izuku to try the hand thing with her. He grabbed her hand and nothing happened. "Hmmm, maybe it only worked once." she said.
"Could be, but it could also be because Kacchan's quirk is pretty much a combination of yours and Uncle Masaru's quirks."
"...Or that." she said, blinking.
A couple of weeks later Izuku had finally finished all of his make-up work from middle school and was able to graduate. However, after obtaining a quirk he planned on going to UA.
Katsuki had all but warmed up to him since they shared a quirk, minus the smoke aspect that Izuku had. The two had begun training at Dagobah Beach Park, which, until recently, looked as though it was declared the second dump of Musutafu from all the trash that drifted there.
They would spar and clean the beach, which Izuku got Katsuki to do for the sake of "training," but he really just felt like doing something nice.
They soon realized that Izuku could use smoke as a separate attack from the explosion aspect of his quirk. He was even able to contain an explosion inside of a ball of smoke and launch it forward, which then exploded on impact. He called it a "Cinder Missile." After a few more weeks of training the two were now ready for UA's entrance exam.
"Hurry it up, Deku! You're taking too long!" yelled Katsuki to Izuku who had stopped to take in the fact that he was actually here. Izuku, startled by Katsuki's sudden outburst, began to walk forward. However, while he was in a hurry he was unaware of the crack in the pavement and tripped.
He had expected to hit the ground and was waiting for the impact. Still waiting, he cracked his eye open as he was curious as to why he wasn't making out with the street. That's when he heard her; "Sorry I used my quirk on you! But, it'd be bad luck if you fell, right?"
He looked towards who the voice belonged to and was met with a short girl that had short brown hair that was topped off by the long bangs on either side of her face. She had fair skin and had an everlasting blush on her cheeks. Her eyes were round and matched her hair in color.
"Uhh, d-don't worry about it. I mean, it's better than a mouthful of asphalt. Thank you!" he said. She was able to get a good look at him as he stood back up. "N-No p-problem, I'm Uraraka Ochako. I got to go. See you inside, Deku-kun!" she said as she sprinted towards the high school, her face in her hands.
"Did she call you 'Deku?' Pfft Hahaha! Yeah, see you inside, Deku-kun!" said Katsuki, mockingly as he made his way inside. Izuku facepalmed, 'She must've heard Kacchan call me that earlier.' He then followed Katsuki's example and made his way inside as well.
It was a pretty boring exam, but he passed it with ease. While Izuku was the smartest person in his class, he couldn't be asked to study or actually try. He just wasn't big on the whole school thing. Now it was time for the practical exam. "This ought to be fun." he said, trying to release smoke from his arm, but to no avail. 'That's not a good sign.'
"STARTT!" yelled Present Mic over the intercom, signalling the start of the practical exam. Everybody was just staring up at him, though. "What are you waiting for?! There are no countdowns in real fights!" This caused the students to begin running towards the gate. Izuku began running with them, "Hello? Smoke, are you in there?" he asked himself as he could no longer summon the smoke from his arm, or the explosions in his hands.
"This is bad, this is very bad!" he said, as two two-pointers cut-off his way forward. "Heyyy guys. Any chance we can rain check this meeting?" he asked the bots. He was met by the two raising up their arms in a threatening manner. A red glow began forming on their palms. "I'll take that as a no!" he said as he ran away.
Meanwhile, in a room that had multiple shadowy figures, there were screens that showed multiple examinees taking out robots. "We have a promising bunch this year, don't we?" said a short figure, causing the others to nod. "There seems to be an issue with one of them, though." said a taller, skinny man as he enlarged the camera that showed footage of Izuku failing to activate his quirk. Another spoke up, "No potential."
"What the hell is going on?! Why are you acting up now of all times?" He had been unable to use his quirk for a while now and time was running out. It was then that he heard guttural screams coming from the street. He had taken position in an alleyway, hiding and trying to summon his smoke.
He looked towards the sound and noticed that the ground began to shake. He peeked his head around the corner and was met with a crowd running past him. "What the-" he looked at what they were running from and his eyes widened in surprise.
His eyes tracing the massive figure laterally, "What. THE. F-"
"Ow!" yelled a feminine voice from the street, causing him to stop in his tracks.
"Th-The nice girl from earlier?" he asked, as he saw the danger she was in. A chunk of concrete had trapped her leg. Little did he notice, small pads began to form each on his fingers.
He wasted no time and ran towards her, otherwise she was roadkill.
"Hang on!" he said as he began to lift the slab off of her. It came off with ease, 'That was surprisingly easy.' he thought to himself.
"Deku-kun?" she asked, surprised as to his sudden appearance.
"Can you walk?" She shook her head, "Alright, let's get you out of here." he said, picking her up bridal style. She looked behind him and noticed that the slab of concrete that had previously trapped her was now floating in mid-air. 'I must've touched it, without realising.' She put her hands together, 'Release!' she thought, but nothing happened.
'I-It can't be,' she thought as she looked at Izuku. 'Does he have a gravity quirk, too?'
"Alright, we should be safe now." he said as he set her down.
"Thank you!" she said. "I had no idea that you had a gravity quirk too."
"What? I don't." he said, exposing the palm of his hands to her view.
"You have pads on your fingers just like me, though." she said, showing him her finger pads.
He looked at his hands, "When the hell did I get these?!" He thought back to when he got his "Napalm" quirk. 'It happened when I touched hands with Kacchan, but… OH YEAH!' he said as he remembered her helping him up from the ground in the morning. "We touched hands!" he yelled, startling her. "But did I lose 'Napalm' now?" He thought back to how it felt to create smoke and explosions. The two watched as the pads on his fingers disappeared and smoke flowed from his arm and small explosions went off in his hands.
"Woah." was all she said.
"Yeah..."
"TIME'S UP!" yelled Present Mic from the intercom.
"Shit."
