For Hannah baker life at Liberty was like a fresh start from her horrible choices that made her leave her last high school. During her the year she spent at liberty she was able to make some friends, however none of them felt special that was until she meant Clay Jensen or as she liked to call him 'helmet' because of his helmet hear. He could always some how make her laugh might it be through bad jokes or him being nerdy….. god did she miss him. You see Clay Jensen committed suicide one week ago, Hannah could remember how her heart broke when she heard the news. She could remember sitting beside him during one of the class they shared only hours before he took his own life. She heard that his mother was the one to find him laying in a bathtub full of his own blood, she couldn't even think of understanding what they are going through. Fallowing what happened the school had to do major damage control from concerned parents worrying about their own children and the lawsuit filed against them by the Jansen's causing major media coverage. Hannah shook her head as she turned her head back to her locker in a hope to change her train of thought.
"Oh my god how could someone so cute kill him self." She heard a random girl from the first years say as she turned to look at them. "We should take a picture and post it online with the caption never forget." The other girl said as she pulled out her phone and taking a picture of them standing in front of the locker. The locker itself was cover in never forget quotes and pictures of Clay supplied by the school's year book club. 'Assholes' she thought to herself as she watched the girls walk way, she closed her locker before making her way to the memorial covered locker.
"What are you doing?" A voice from behind her broke her thought as she turned to see a guy with messy black hair wearing the school's sports jacket. This was Justin Jensen, clay's adopted brother, she didn't know why Clay's parents adapted him. The only thing she did know was that it happened they both of them were very young. As she turned to look at him she could see that he looked like complete shit, from the bags under his eyes from lack of sleep. "I was just paying my respects." She said as he glared at her.
"I don't believe it for a second, there's no way you're as innocent as he says you are!" He yell gain the attention of near by students and a confused look from Hannah. Before she could respond to his statement a voice cut into the conversation "you should lower your voice so everyone here doesn't hear you." Hannah knew that voice as she turned to face the new comer, a guy with short black hear and wearing a black leather jacket walking towards them. "Go fuck your self Tony, your nothing but a pice of fucking trash as well just like her." Justin growled at him as he walked away from the two. Hannah turned back to the locker as tony stood beside her, out of the corner of her eye she could see a mixture of emotions on his face. "You miss him don't you?" She asked as he nodded unable to speak, you see tony and clay have been best friends since they were young or that's at least what tony told her.
"What was his problem anyways?" She thought out loud getting a sigh from tony as he replied "can you blame him? He did just lose his brother after all.". That simply reply caused her to flinch slightly as he turned to walk towards his first class of the day. The rest of the day continued on as normal, each of the teachers telling the students that they can talk to them if needed to talk. The last class of the day was social studies one of the few class that Hannah enjoyed, but over the past week she used this time to think about life or mainly clay. "Zacharee! The lesson is on the board not out side." The teacher said gaining the attention of the student in question. Hannah turned her attention to the black haired women, her long black hair done up in to a ponytail, She had on the schools football jacket and and blue jeans to match the colour of the jacket. Zacharee Shan-Yung Dempsey or Zach as she liked to be called was a member of any major woman's sport teams along side Bryce walker, who was the captain of the women's basketball and baseball teams. Zach responded with a sorry before turning her attention back to the lesson.
The rest of the day continued on as normally, Hannah let out a sigh of relief as she made her way out of the school. "Need a ride?" A voice form behind her caused her to turn to see tony. A smile crept onto her face as she nodded, they made their way towards his red Ford Mustang which he considered it to be his baby. "So my lady where would you like to go?" Tony said in a joking manner, which caused Hannah to giggle and reply "well good sir I would love a ride to my family's store." Tony gave a light bow as they made their way towards the store, the ride it's was quite as she felt the wind for the opened window blow lightly from on her face.
"I'm surprised you haven't put on one of your famous tapes" she joked, knowing how much he love cassettes, he would always say things 'it brings out the best of the music'. He seemed to flinch at the question and took a minute before responding "yeah I haven't really been feeling music lately.". Hannah want to ask more but was cut off as they pulled up to her family's drug store, she said her thanks getting a small smile in return as he drove off. She walked in greeting her parents as her made her way to put her backpack in her normal spot. "oh Hannah honey, a package came in for you today." Her mother said as she handed a box to her, which caused her to raise a eyebrow a the strange package. She made her way to the back of the store to open the package, when she opened the box the situation only got even more confusing as she say cassette tapes with numbers from 1-13 and a map of the town. "What is this?" She said to herself, was it part of some sort of marketing advertisement or some sort of prank. Well there was only one way to find out so she made her way out to the front of the store where she saw her mother looking over some of the order forms. "Hey mom do we happen to own a cassette player my any chance." She asked getting a confused look from her mother. "Why would you need a cassette player?" Her mother asked looking make down to the form in front of the her which she responded "well it's part of a assignment we have to listen to some cassette tapes to get an understanding of old technology.". Hannah watched as her mother raised her head before letting out a small laugh' "so cassettes are or school technology now?" She said with a smile on her face before continuing "I remember when I was young we used record to listen to music.". Before Hannah could respond a voice cut into the conversation "what's this about records?", she turned to see her father standing there. Before her mother could say anything she said "do we have a cassette player?". She could see her father thinking for a few moments before walking away and returning with a brand new player in hand. "Your just in luck you got a couple in stock yesterday.". She took the player and put it into her bag before asking "is it possible I can head home early today, so I can start working on this assignment?", getting nodes from her parents so quickly grabbed the box and made her way to leave as she overheard her parents talk about old technology.
Hannah let out a groan as she threw her bag onto her bed after grabbing the cassette player. "Okay let's see what this is all about." She said as she grabbed tape one and placed it into the player.
"Hey, it's Clay Jenson"
