'Are you sure?' I sounded relieved, but I couldn't be not yet.
'No not pretty sure, I need you to be certain like there is no other chance of him being alive.' God why can't they give me a true answer.
'Yes, I understand that, but I need you to know that if you are not certain and anything happens to my little boy or my husband. I will personally blame you, so go over to the morgue take a picture, send it to me. Then match his dentals records and DNA I need to know its him.' I knew I sounded rude, but I cannot take any risk with my family's lives.
'Yes, thank you. I will be expecting your call later today or tomorrow.' Hanging the phone up I ran a hand down my face, I had been waiting for this call I just wanted to go home. I could hear little patter of feet walking up to my door. The door opened and revealed a little boy with dark brown hair, brown orbs of endless chocolate.
'momma, I missed you.' Running my hand over his hair as he laid down next to me, I knew he should be asleep in his room, but I also knew that he couldn't sleep very well even at 3 years old he just knew something was wrong, I guess that is something we passed onto him.
'I missed you too, but you need to sleep.' I pulled him close to my chest, he mumbled into my chest that he wanted to go home, and he missed daddy, I just hugged him harder. We had been in witness protection for just over 13 months and it had been a long 13 months. I had missed my husband's birthday, our wedding anniversary and we also had to celebrate my baby boy's birthday in witness protection.
Listening to his breathing turn into a steady rate I knew he had fallen asleep, I allowed my self to actually think about the entire conversation. I couldn't believe that this phone call had happened so quickly I was expecting to be in witness protection for a minimum of at least 2 years, obviously I didn't want that but if it meant keeping my baby boy safe then that's exactly what I would do.
My thoughts slowly drifted to my husband, I missed him so much. I recalled the last time I saw him, it was just as we were leaving for witness protection…
Flashback
'You be good for your mom on your holiday and I will see you real soon buddy okay. You gotta be the man of the house while I'm not with you okay bud.' I could tell that he was close to crying, by the shining in his eyes and the way he was gripping our baby boy.
'don't worry, daddy. I look after momma. Love you lots daddy!' he hugged him tighter like he could sense about the impending separation for an unknown time. Slowly my husband sent him to go get his favourite teddy and book to take with him. Once he had left the room, I sent an agent to watch him.
Slowly my husband rose to meet my level and encased me in a massive hug, 'I'm going to miss you so much, no sweetheart don't cry. Please don't cry, you know I hate it when you cry at least when the sad tears. You got to be strong okay, if not for me for him. I will see you soon okay, I love you always and forever. I will be seeing see you soon, just as soon as we get this whole mess sorted and behind us then we can move forward as a family and look towards our future, leaving the past in the past. Okay?' I simply hugged him harder.
'I love you too so much, sweetie. I will keep him safe I promise you.' He nodded and kissed me as if it was the last time, in some ways it could be.
'2 MINUTES UNTIL WE LEAVE. LET'S WRAP THIS UP AGENTS' the lead agent cut through the moment. We knew our time was coming to a close and we needed to separate, quickly and easily whilst making it easy upon our little boy.
'MOMMY, DADDY! I'm ready, I've got my favourite book and Mr. Wiggly.' He came barging into the living room where we were standing, I reached out and to pick him up, placing him upon my hip in between both of us. My husband reached out and hugged both of us, we both knew this was going to be our last family hug for a sometime and we needed to savour every single moment of it.
'Time to go.' The lead agent called out to me from the front door, detangling us from him was harder than we expected. Glancing back one time I mouthed I love you. With that the door closed behind us, effectively shutting us off from our former life. Looking towards the car I knew that the next few months were going to be hard, but we had to do what was safest for our family.
End of flashback
Sleep quickly took over me, with thoughts of my husband still filling my head. I awoke the net morning to tiny little finger poking me in the cheek, 'Mommy, I want pancakes. Mommy' he kept chanting my name until the sleep wore of and I slowly opened my eyes to see his wide chocolate orbs staring back at me.
'Come on then, Pancakes it is!' pulling him into my arms to carry him down to the living room, he was only carried since he was still wobbly walking straight after to waking up and I enjoyed holding him it allowed relief to wash over me knowing that he was right there in my arms safe and sound.
Our morning was fairly uneventful apart from when we couldn't find Mr. Wiggly but don't worry that was resolved when we located him under the bed where he must have fallen throughout the night. We were curled up on the sofa watching Scooby-Doo under a blanket eating popcorn with melted chocolate, pretzels and chocolate M&M'S when the doorbell rang, walking up to the door I glanced back to the couch and he was still engrossed in the movie that he knew line by line.
Opening the door slightly I saw our lead agent at the door, I sucked my breath in. We had only spoken on the phone less than twelve hours ago, this had to be something good right? If he was standing at the front door unless we had been found and needed to relocate.
'This may be a matter best discussed inside? Away from strangers and more than a few feet away from a certain little boy.' I quickly complied by opening the door wider and led him towards the kitchen making sure to quickly check on the small child who was still engrossed in the movie.
'As you know, the body was found yesterday in an abandoned warehouse outside of Boston, I personally have looked at the body. DNA, dental records and fingerprints were taken and checked. They all came back for a positive match and because you made it clear that you needed complete reassurance I even checked to make sure any tattoos and mentioned scars listed in a report from his records. They match. I am so glad to tell you this, its him. Its Ian Doyle. Ian Doyle is DEAD. Repeat it back to me Emily.' He had gripped my hands; unshed tears were threatening to fall from my eyes. I couldn't believe it, they day I had dreamed of had finally come.
'Ian Doyle is Dead. Ian Doyle is DEAD!' I was only repeating it back to him but also to myself. Not only was he dead it meant I could return home, return to my life and take my baby boy back to my husband and his dad.
'W-When do we leave to go back to Virginia. I want to go home as soon as possible.' I was literally shaking with happiness and shock. 'You've got an hour to pack any belongs you wish to take home, I will be back in one-hour Emily. I knew you would want to go home as soon as possible so the plane leaves in an hour and a half. Let's move Emily, get your boy. Get your things and let's move!' he sounded happy, his happiness didn't even compare to mine inside.
He quickly bade a see you in an hour, I glanced at the clock it was 9:30 now so he was due back for 10:30. I mentally run through the things I would be taken home, our a few clothes we had, few photos and the select toys that was brought with us. Running through to our bedrooms I grabbed everything, rammed inside our two suitcases that we had. Made sure nothing valuable was left or anything we needed. That only took me half an hour, all I had left to do was have a shower make myself look some what presentable. Then all that was left was clear the living room and tell my baby boy we were going home.
'Hey, buddy. Want to come here and get changed quickly. I need to tell you something I called through to the living room where he was currently placed. I could just hear little footsteps running through the hallway as it was wood flooring. His cheeky little face appeared in the door way and ran full speed into my awaiting arms.
'Mummy, where we going?' I ran a hand over his cheek soothingly, luckily we only had ten minutes till we were leaving if I had told him any sooner then he would be bouncing off the walls and would be incredibly hard to calm down.
'Well buddy, Agent Crade was at the door and he was telling mummy that we could go home to daddy now. As the bad man was caught and can't hurt anyone ever again. So, do you want to go home to daddy, Jack?' just like I predicted he started to bounce up and down in my arms with excitement. He placed his little hands either side of my head and slightly squeezed. Peering his face close to mine so my dark eyes were swimming in his chocolate ones.
'YEESSSSSSSS! Come on mummy, lets go, now! I want to see daddy and play games with him and give him lots, lots, lots and lots of hugs and kisses! I also want to play with all my other toys that I missed. I want to play in my swing set. I want to sleep in my race car bed.' He continued to ramble about all the rings he missed or wanted to plat with whilst I changed him from his pyjama's to some casual clothing.
The doorbell rang grabbing Jack's hand, I looked down to see him standing holding Mr. Wiggle in his left hand and his right within my own. 'Ready Jack.' He looked up and smiled with all his teeth showing, 'Ready, Mummy!'
With that we were placed in the car and we started our journey home. Our journey back to our life. Back to where we were missed.
15:47 Washington DC.
We were just getting into the Black SVU to take us home. I was briefed on the plane that my husband was currently at work and hadn't been called out on a case with his team. He was also unaware that Ian Doyle was dead, so he was also unaware that we were coming home. It excited me to surprise him at work as I didn't actually have keys to my own house as I wasn't allowed to take them with me. Jack had slept for a few hours on the plane after finally succumbing to his sleep from being so excited that it finally wore him out.
Looking out to see other cars and people going about their normal day as we were just coming into Quantico. Jack took my hand like he could almost sense how nervous and happy I was. Breezing through security with the director meeting us at the gates. Being escorted into the building by the director, three FBI agents and the 4 witness protection agents that had travelled with us for the time we were away. Eyes were naturally drawn to us, we didn't exactly blend in. By this point Jack had eventually made his way onto my hip from being nervous about the people watching us, he had even fallen asleep with his head tucked underneath my chin, his steady breathing was all I could feel against my neck.
The elevator journey took an excruciatingly long time even though it was only about a five-minute journey it felt like a lifetime due to this elevator ride being the last point of travelling we had to do to be reunited with my husband. We were taking the back way towards the conference room, I could hear murmur of voices from behind the closed door. The butterflies occupying my stomach was almost taking control of my entire body.
I saw what I assumed to be the director right hand agent opening the door, almost instantly the voices stopped due to the door opening. I saw the director step inside behind his agent, 'Director, what can the BAU do for you today?' I heard my husband exclaim always the professional I smiled to myself.
My lead agent nudged me forward to just behind the door, which was blocking me from being seen by the occupants of the conference room. The director cleared his throat he sounded nervous, 'Good afternoon, BAU. I actually don't need anything I'm here on more personal business. Agent?' with that being said one agent walked in, in front of me motioning for me to follow him. Silence swept over the room when I walked in.
Before I had to chance to say anything my husband had managed to get around the table, pass everyone in the room and us into his arms engulfing us in into a massive hug. I could feel multiple pairs of eyes on us, but I wasn't focusing us on anything other than the man currently holding us I could feel his tears falling from his eyes into my hair. I started to feel Jack start to stir from the pressure of being squished by his parents.
I saw him step back a little bit so Jack would be able to see and understand what was happening. I knew what was going to happen before it did. Just as Jack opened his eyes, he blinked a few times whilst looking around until his gaze focused on the one-person standing directly in front of us.
His shriek startled everyone in the room as he leapt from my arms into the waiting arms of his father. 'DADDY!' unshed tears pooled my eyes as they embraced, I felt like the world was righted with us being reunited. It wasn't until I looked around, I saw that all but the director and our lead agents had left, this due to us having to explain to the stunned looking agents that were the BAU. Raising my eyebrows to my husband I waited for him to introduce us.
The team had slowly sunk back into the chairs they were previously occupying before I arrived, I could feel my husband standing next to me who had placed Jack in front of me with him resting heavily on my legs to reassure him I was still there. I placed a hand over his chest rubbing it affectionately almost to soothe him. I glanced to my right to see him scratch the back of his neck, which he only did when nervous.
'I guess I may have some explaining to do, but before I do that I would like everyone to meet Emily and Jack, my wife and son.' Straight to the point as always, that's my husband. If the situation wasn't so serious, as he had worked with these people for almost two years and they had no idea he was even seeing someone let alone married and had a son, it would have been comical by the looks on their faces. They ranged for utter shock to complete surprise.
'H-How did you manage to keep this GIGANTIC SECRET from us or never slip up and let on that you had a family, AARON HOTCHNER!' he could always trust Penelope Garcia to shriek his name with happiness and surprise at the same time. I motioned for Emily to sit down, instantly Jack crawled up onto her not wanting to let go of her or me for that matter for any period of time. He grabbed my hand once seated so I sat in the seat next to them.
'So, when I started here I was new and didn't know anyone except from the director as we have met at previous political parties. Obviously, I wanted you to all meet Emily and Jack but just over 18 months ago everything in my life sort of changed for me and my family. You remember when I had that consultation and presentation that was three weeks long, last year.' Everyone nodded with concern and confusion in their eyes. 'well that's not what happened before I started the BAU I wasn't a desk agent in Chicago I actually worked for a taskforce where I met Emily. I can't go into too much detail as its still classified and as much as I want to tell you everything only select people have clearance including me and Emily. But we had to go for a debriefing about a case that happened 8 years prior that we were both involved in. It was an undercover case that we both went under in both Emily had to go deeper into the operation than I was due to her background.' I started to choke up on my words as always Emily knew when to continue what I couldn't.
The team focused on Emily as she started to continue the story, 'Basically what happened was our profile was being rejected as it hadn't helped them at all in the last 8 years to break him for everything he knew about a specific topic that we didn't know anything about. We then learned that the man in question had escaped and couldn't be located. His name was Ian Doyle, he became the most wanted man in the world overnight. I think this was at the time Aaron use to come home saying the team hate me, I snapped at this person today or this person today. I think that was all down to the stress of the unknowing if Doyle was coming for us or was simply going to run. It was a tough and stressful time for both of us as it wasn't like 8 years ago we didn't have nothing to lose this time. Not only could we lose each other we had to think for our son, we had to think what was best for our family.' Tears had started to gather in my eye thinking back to such a rough period in our marriage and life. Aaron placed his hand on my back whilst rubbing circles to help calm me down. Jack just snuggled me tighter.
Aaron then continued the remainder of the story which by far would be the most heart breaking, not only for us but when they were told I'm sure for them too. Aaron had repeatedly told me that any attack against one of us they all viewed as an attack against everyone. So for their unit chief and his family to suffer this would break their heart. 'The next few months we were continually being checked upon by higher ups, some that we hadn't seen or spoken to since that one case ended. Considering Emily left all agencies when we found out she was pregnant it was like we had gone back in time. Our life was in this like undetermined state of our future at this point, but everything took a drastic turn when photos were sent to the director of Emily and Jack along with photos that couldn't have come from anyone other than Doyle himself, along with a note saying an eye for an eye, son for son. Not long now Emily Hotchner your time is almost up. I'm almost ready for you. This happened just over a year ago, it was then decided that Emily and Jack would enter the program.' Silence blanketed the conference room.
Penelope and Jennifer had tears streaming down their face, spencer looked mortified and well Derek, David looked thunderous they couldn't believe that Hotch had managed to deal with this, Strauss and run an efficient team at the same time. 'Witness Protection, for almost a year is an incredibly long time. For any one let alone an agents family.' We just nodded, no words were needed it was a lot of information to accumulate in a short amount of time.
I looked at Aaron and he nodded to give all details, I took a deep breath, 'When we knew that the threat was imminent it caused a problem as it mean deciding who would be going in. Originally we had planned to all go in together, but we were told that if Aaron just disappeared then that was going to raise questions that would alert Doyle to the fact that we had gone underground. It was easier to hide the fact that me and Jack were gone that Aron because of the FBI, we were originally only meant to be under for a few months and then we received word that Ian Doyle was now in the states, so we were told that it could be a minimum of 2 years, in case they couldn't get him.' The team just look on in horror, imagining how a family could survive that all.
'Can I ask something? I'm assuming you wouldn't be here if It wasn't safe and by Hotch's reaction earlier I guess he didn't know that you where coming home? At least not today anyway.' Rossi bravely asked, I think even Aaron would want the answer to that question. Relaying exactly what our agent had told me. Relief could be clearly seen wash off of their unit chiefs face, it was almost like 10 years were taken from his face. The team thought they were looking at a completely different man when he was around his wife and son, whenever Jack spoke to him he actually laughed. Emily than suggested that the team should come round theirs instead of the restaurant idea that Derek had offered up when everyone was content to leave.
Home had never felt so good before, everything was exactly where it was left except it was clean and casefiles were on the coffee table, Aaron looked sheepishly when the team exchanged looks. Dinner was an unusual affair with pizza ordered, Chinese and Indian ordered to suit everyone's appetites. The team were relaxing outside patio with a drink as it was a Friday and no work tomorrow. It was a fulfilled night with Emily letting the team in on a few secrets about their fearless Bossman, what Penelope called him, the fact that he cried when they got married which she had photos to prove, that fact that he cried when they found out she was pregnant and when Jack was born which again she had photos to back up, another fact that he sings in the shower or that he loves Mexican food more than Italian food, something that deeply offended David. She also learnt where the nickname Hotch came from, that he could be a drill Sargent at work sometimes. The fact that child cases really hit him, which made perfect sense to the team now they had met little Jack Hotchner, the perfect mixture of his parents. The team also learned that Hotch was a very playful dad and very hands on, at that very moment that exact little boy was curled into his father's side and they all thought he was asleep until a little voice broke through their different conversations.
'Mummy can daddy read me the superhero story tonight? In your bed, I don't wanna sleep in my bed all alone.' He looked up to Emily with such big puppy eyes. How could she say no to that little face. Looking up to catch Aaron's eyes she had a slightly guilty look.
'Okay so I may have let him sleep in the bed with me for the past few weeks.' Aaron just gave a her a pointed look. Huffing I continued, 'alright the past few months.' Aaron just had a amused face at his wife trying to cover herself, 'exactly how many months Is a few months, Emily Hotchner' he was teasing me, I knew it the team knew it and so did he. I mumbled my response back, giving me that look to speak up, 'Well a few months might not be completely right, it was more like 11 months. What he couldn't sleep!' she exclaimed.
The team just laughed knowing that wasn't the only reason and was most likely not even the biggest reason.
'Love you mummy! Love daddy!' jack unexpectantly exclaimed once the laughter died down, the team just smiled at the incredibly sweet little boy and how he was snuggled between his parents who simply couldn't leave each other sides.
