In a vast and dark universe, young warriors are chosen by fate to protect the light of the stars.
Though they are destined to burn bright, bright as the ever glowing sun that orbits the cosmos, upon a dark day, those warriors shall collapse as furiously as they burn.

The Star Guardians.

Above the skies, the Star Guardians soar, they fight to protect the stars that inhabit the universe. But below, lurking eyes stalk those that fight for the stars.
In the hallway, most decrepit, walked the former Star Guardian Zoe, who had previously failed to eliminate the shapeshifting Guardian, "Tch, agile lizard," Mumbled Zoe under her breath.
She was so close to corrupting her, so close and yet, so far. Mere seconds before finally completing the curse, the witch had to appear! That accursed wench! Her former teammate.

After a short battle, Zoe and her two allies managed to retreat unscathed. Well, to call them allies would be an overstatement, since the two hated her, as was expected since she was the one, who had killed the pair in the past.
Taking on Ahri wouldn't have been all that difficult, she was certainly Zoe's equal, or perhaps less. No, the problem were her allies.
She had been arrogant enough to fight against the group before, never again.

Zoe was a member of the ancient, first group of Star Guardians, upon expressed to the 'truth' Zoe began to change, from appearance to finally her own mind. Zoe's heart began to desire not love, but chaos - mastering her newfound power given to her by the one who had 'revealed the truth', the first Star Guardian, she now hunts those she used to call family.

Finally appearing before a decrepit door, she opened it and entered the room.
Inside the room, a figure was discerned, the man was sitting on a chair, reading the fifth volume of 'Loveless' and having a sip of expensive wine.
Putting the glass down, the man proceeded to utter. "You look well."
Zoe sighed and sat on the chair which was a couple of footsteps apart. "One may say that this outfit of mine has seen better days."
The man put a note on the book, to indicate which page he was on before closing it. "Would I be correct to assume that you failed?"

"..."
The silence of the hereafter was rather awkward and more so annoying to the girl.
The man stood up and walked towards a nearby window. "Guessed as such. What of the two?"
"They're fine, on the matter at hand, any progress with the spell, Azrael?"
"Little, nothing significant."

Zoe then sighed and stood up from her chair.
"Fine!" She proclaimed loudly.
" I'll be gone for a while, you know, stuff to destroy, beings to kill, see you, Mr. sinner!"
Zoe then took the wine bottle and hopped out of the room with a smile on her face.
"Left as quickly as she came, eh?" Said Azrael as he looked out of the window.
Though the last word that came out of her mouth reminded Azrael of something.
It has been a while since he had been called that, a sinner. Though he could not deny it, he is a sinner, hence his title.
Azrael, The scholar of the first sin.
The sin of the first guardian.
He had seen the path ahead.
Beyond the horizon.
Across the cosmos.
The truth of it all, unveiled.

The task of a Guardian is to protect life, but he couldn't. Not after what he had seen, learned.

Flashback. Circa 3 years ago.
The Original Star Guardians, the team of Azrael, Zoe, Syndra, Janna, and Ahri.

Every time she looked at him a change was to be discerned.
She knew that he had changed, drastically even.
From behavior to speech.
From laughter and enthusiasm to dead silence.
She had known, Ahri knew.
The captain she knew, was gone.
She had to find out why.
Ahri, Janna, and Syndra were concerned, they could feel it, the malice oozing out of Azrael and Zoe.
The trio debated whether or not asking the two would be a smart thing to do, but alas, something had to be done, and Ahri was certainly not going to wait for anything.

"I'll do it."
"What?!" Shouted Syndra and Janna simultaneously.
"If it has to be someone, it must be me. I've known him the longest."
"Right," Said Syndra, "Since that day..."
Janna scratched her head and said, "It's hard to forget that he saved your life when you were young, that kind of motivated you to join his team, didn't it?"
Ahri looked down blushing and murmured. "K-Kinda."
"Okay, we'll trust you!" Said Syndra and Janna both at the same time.

Going on a mission would certainly be the best time to ask, or so they thought.

While the two were on a mission on a distant and dead planet, the cosmos was quiet, unusually so.

As Azrael dealt the final blow to the beast beneath him, he turned around and discerned that Ahri was holding her own well. She managed to defeat 5 beasts with ease, Azrael knew that when the Star Guardians needed a leader, she'd be the one.
He also knew of her spying on him, so for her to suspect him of something was expected.
"You wanted to speak to me, Ahri?"

She looked at her captain and decided to get straight to the point.
"Azrael, tell me, what did you see when you entered that realm?!" Demanded Ahri.

Azrael turned around and look at the planet around.
"The truth to it all."
"The truth?" She replied back.

"This, Ahri. This is Earth-Prime. Before there was thought, there was this place. One planet, with a single history.
But as time passed and with the coming of humanity came the illusion of free will. And with that illusion became chaos.
With every choice we make, we create a world. History branches in two, creating one Earth where we made the choice, and a second where we didn't.
That's the secret of the universe, you know. Billions of people, making billions of choices, creating infinite Earths. Some so similar to each other that you could spend a lifetime searching for any distinction. Others so radically different, they defy comprehension."

Ahri stood there puzzled and confused, unsure of what was said.
"Y-you're saying Valoran originated here?"
"Every version of reality balances precariously on this singular Earth.
It seems so different from the Earth's we know. I can't imagine what series of decisions led to this world hurtling out of its orbit. But I've been shown this. The source of the cataclysm was the same as it always is: humanity, us."
"N-no! You're wrong! Did Zoe drag you into thi-"
Azrael interrupted her before she could finish her sentence.
"You know better, Ahri. Humanity is cancer, and there is but a single way of eliminating the disease. A reset, of everything."
"Y-You wouldn't! The captain I know would never do this!"
Azrael looked up at the sky with a bitter expression.
"The captain you knew..."
