Well I had a bit of spare time due to staying home from work for awhile, and so I decided to write this up since it's been in my mind for so long. It's a Persona 4 and Persona 5 crossover, timeline happening during Persona 5, meaning it's roughly 5 years for the P4 incidents. Enjoy!
April 1st
It was a fine morning at Inaba. Kanji Tatsumi, a tailor, was busy cleaning up the storefront, sweeping the floor, making sure that the orders were all placed and stocked, before finally heading to the kitchen, just to see his mother cooking breakfast.
"Ma! I told you I can handle the cooking," exclaimed Kanji, "You just sit back and relax."
"Oh Kanji, I'm not so handicapped that I can't cook for you," replied his mother, Akiko Tatsumi, "Here, have some toast and eggs."
Kanji gratefully took the plate, finishing off his food with thanks before heading back to manage the front of the store, looking at the calendar. It was April 1st of 2016, roughly five years since the midnight show incidents. In the passing years, the Investigation Team was involved with a few more cases, one of which led them to meeting even more Persona users as well as the Kirijo group. It was thanks to this that they became part of the Shadow Operatives reserve members. It was also because of this that Kanji's knitting business of making cute dolls exploded thanks to Mitsuru Kirijo. Money wasn't much of a problem for them anymore.
"Another day, another chance," hummed Kanji as he took out some yarn and needle to crochet some more.
Soon, he heard steps coming towards the door, and quickly put his materials away.
"Hello, welcome to Tatsumi Textiles, how can I... what are you doing here?" asked Kanji as soon as he saw who it was.
"Hello Kanji," bowed Mitsuru, wearing her usual white coat, "I came here because I need your help."
After apologizing to his mother and asking her to man the front, Kanji and Mitsuru were at the back, sitting across from each other while sipping tea.
"So what you need me for?" asked Kanji, "There some sort of creepy Shadows popping back up again at some town?"
"Fortunately that's not the case right now, but rather... It's easier if I give you the file," said Mitsuru, passing a file to him.
Kanji flipped it open, reading through the case. He frowned when he read about a scientist named Wakaba Isshiki and her research in cognitive science, how she suddenly died via suicide. Another thing that caught his attention was the name Masayoshi Shido, which was hi-lighted.
"Shido... the name sounds familiar," hummed Kanji.
"Masayoshi Shido is a powerful politician that is currently running for the seat of the next Prime Minister of Japan. On the surface, he seems to be a polite, charismatic cabinet member of his party, but further investigation shows that there are hidden secrets," explained Mitsuru.
"And we all know the cover is never what reflects the inside of someone," muttered Kanji as he closed the file, "And so what?"
"Wakaba was connected to the Kirijo group, researching data for us when she died. However, the data seemed to have disappeared before we could take it with us. It took us a while, but we managed to trace it to Shido's group. Unfortunately, we have no proof that can back it up. We are currently still investigating more on Shido, but we have to be careful. Shido seems to have a powerful backer. Not to mention ever since he stole the data, strange accidents have been happening. We believe it to be similar to the Apathy Syndrome."
"And what does this have to do with me?" asked Kanji, "You asking me to pretend to be a bodyguard while spying on him? I'm not really good with that spy shit. You should get Naoto to investigate some more."
"We currently have her doing that. Rather, I was hoping you could help out with this," said Mitsuru, pulling out another file along with an application form.
Kanji looked at the file before noticing a photo of a boy with unkempt black hair and dark gray eyes. He scanned down, noting the name to be Ren Amamiya.
"Hmm... he's in juvie," noted Kanji, "What for though?"
"Assaulting a politician," said Mitsuru, "However, I believe it to be a hoax. I read through the trial transcripts. It didn't list the name of the victim, no witnesses came forth to actually testify in the trial, and the poor boy was bulldozed through the system and sentenced as a criminal."
"The hell? That's totally unfair!" shouted Kanji, "We needa bust him out! Who's his so-called victim?"
"He's already out, though he's on probation," said Mitsuru, "He'll be attending Shujin Academy, an elite prep school located in Aoyama-Itchome neighborhood in Tokyo. As for his 'victim', we believe it to be Shido once more."
"Hell, the guy sounds like he needs a good kick in the ass," muttered Kanji, "An elite prep school, eh? What's wrong with his old school?"
"He was expelled," sighed Mitsuru, "Because of his record, no other school would accept him because of his 'label'. Shujin Academy was the only one who was willing to take him... though not before they received a 'donation' from us."
"Helping him out already," grinned Kanji, "Hopefully the kid will do better. So I still don't see what I'm supposed to do."
Mitsuru slid the application form in front of Kanji once more, allowing him to scan through it. It was a Shujin Academy registration form. Specifically, a student form.
"Oh no," said Kanji, realizing just what Mitsuru wanted., "No no no no no."
"I want you to attend Shujin Academy as a student while also acting as a bodyguard for Amamiya," said Mitsuru, ignoring Kanji's cries of no.
"Why me?" asked Kanji, "I'm not exactly a student age. You gonna give me a false ID, age, and stuff?"
"No, I want you to put your real information on there," corrected Mitsuru.
"That's even worse!" said Kanji, "I'll be the old guy in school! Why not Ken Amada? He should be 17 right now, he'd be perfect for the role! I'm 20 already! Way past the age line!"
"Several reasons," answered Mitsuru, "One, Ken is currently on another assignment that I can't pull him off. Two, he's currently president of the student council at Gekkoukan High and on track of graduating early. Three... is because you don't have a high school diploma, and thought this would be a chance for you to get one from a prestigious high school."
Kanji huffed, "Don't need a diploma to do well in this world."
Kanji had been forced to drop out of Yasogami High School in his senior year when his mother collapsed once more due to her health. It hurt that he wouldn't graduate with a few friends, but he never regretted dropping out to take care of his mother. Plus, he was doing fine financially wise, and so it didn't make sense to return to high school to finish a diploma. All his friends offered to help pay for online courses to get a GED, but he refused.
"It's because of that that you would fit in perfectly," explained Mitsuru, "We can't use Ken because of his current status. It would draw suspicion on why such a successful student would suddenly want to transfer to Shujin. Gekkouukan High School is an even more prestigious school than Shujin Academy."
Kanji sighed as he read over the file once more, "I understand, but... my mom..."
"I will personally hire a caretaker, bodyguard, and tailor to help cover for you until the mission is over," add Mitsuru, "I will pay all expenses for both covering this shop and anything you need on your mission."
Before Kanji could think or say anything, the door suddenly opened up to reveal her mother.
"Mom? What are you-" started Kanji, only to be interrupted.
"You should go," ordered Akiko, causing Kanji to gape, "I'm not blind to know that you've been up to some sort of secret missions ever since that transfer student and your friend/senpai, Yu Narukami, came here. I just... chose to ignore it, seeing you happy with friends. Actual friends, who still see you even if they've moved. Especially that girlfriend of yours."
Kanji blushed at that statement. It wasn't public that Naoto Shirogane and he were a couple, who was still solving cases even today. Though she was no longer called the detective prince, as in later years she revealed her gender, and had merely never corrected the media's assumption. Though he had heard there was another boy being heralded as the second coming of the detective prince.
"But my one regret that I wish I could take back was forcing you to drop out of high school," finished Akiko.
"Mom, you never forced me to, I chose to-" started Kanji once more, only for Akiko to shush him.
"I am aware that you dropped out to care for me," continued Akiko, "But it was something I never wanted you to do. By the time I found it, the process had already been completed. I desperately wanted you to return to finish high school, but you refused, citing that you needed to take care of me. I was worried about our financial situation, only to see that you had even taken care of that. And for that, I am grateful for your other friend for helping."
At this, she bowed towards Mitsuru, who quickly told her that it wasn't needed.
"But now, you have a chance to finish up your schooling. A chance to grow even more. I tell you the truth, I wanted you to grow and see more than this town. I wanted you to have choices, not to be forced to stay here. And with a diploma from a prestigious school like that, it could open doors, and even get you to college. Your other friends are also in college, too. Even Yukiko, who wanted to stay and run the inn, is at college at her mother's insistence."
"Mom...," whispered Kanji.
"Go, my son. I'm not so fragile that I'll keel over when you're gone. Plus, your friend here said that she'd have people look after me. My only worry is that you'll be too rowdy at the new school."
"If it helps, we're also having your friends working near Tokyo so they can be in contact with you," added Mitsuru, "All of them have agreed to help."
Kanji sighed as he looked over the application form once more.
"You swear that you'll have someone look over my mom? Cause if you don't I'll kick your ass!" threatened Kanji.
"Kanji!" said Akiko, sounding scandalized.
"Of course," nodded Mitsuru, "I have them waiting outside right now, and can bring them in if you want."
Kanji took one last look at the application before sighing, "Fine. I'll do it. Give me a pen."
April 10th
Kanji twitched as he walked down the school halls of Shujin Academy. He was wearing his uniform just like he did back at Yasogami High. It wasn't his fault that it felt more comfortable that way!
"Can you not?" sighed his guide, the current student council president of the school, Makoto Niijima, "Please wear your uniform in a proper fashion."
"It feels more comfortable this way," grunted Kanji.
"Why do I have to put up with this?" sighed Makoto as they arrived at the principal's office, "Honestly, why are you attending high school at this age? Shouldn't you be in college?"
"How about you not stick your nose where it doesn't belong?" barked Kanji, causing Makoto to recoil at that, "There are circumstances that people might not want to talk about. One involving why I didn't finish my schooling."
"I see," stammered Makoto. It was true, it wasn't any business of hers why the principal had accepted this student.
They walked the halls in silence until finally arriving at the principal's office.
"Ah, you're here," smiled the principal, his shiny dome glinting in the sun.
'Geez, go on a diet!' thought Kanji.
"It's very rare that we accept someone who's above the average age and yet not have a diploma," continued the principal, "But after reading the extenuating circumstances, my board and I decided to graciously allow you the chance of finishing your schooling here. You will, of course, be placed in the senior courses, and your grades are quite remarkable, not to mention the recommendations you received. Hopefully, those few years of not being at school haven't caused your habits to fade. If you have any trouble, I'm sure our student council president here, Makoto Niijima, could help you."
"Thank you for the chance," nodded Kanji, twitching inside. He had to make it sound like he was gracious when really all he was here was for a damn job. Why couldn't they just made him a janitor?
"Makoto, could you guide young Tatsumi around, to let him get a feel of the school? He will be in your class," said the principal.
"Of course, but could I have a private word with you?" asked Makoto.
"Oh I'm sure we can do this la-" started the principal, but Kanji opened the door.
"Go ahead, I'll just wait outside. Don't take too long," said Kanji as he shut the door.
"Principal, why are we taking him?" hissed Makoto, "He's a ….. delinquent! Have you seen that scar, his hairstyle, his age?"
"Now now, I told you, there are extenuating circumstances in his case," replied the principal, "For instance, did you know he dropped out because he had to take care of his mother? His widowed mother?"
That took out all the sail in Makoto's rant. She couldn't help biting her lip at that. She was lucky that her sister, Sae, had already risen in her field, working as a Public Prosecutor when their father died, leaving her to take care of Makoto. If the death had been years earlier, then her sister might've dropped out of college just to take care of both of them.
"Good, now I must insist that this conversation is over. I have another transfer student that I'm meeting, and this one is the more troublesome one. While he looks like a delinquent, Kanji Tatsumi actually has no criminal records, and his recommendations are from very prestigious people," said the principal, "Now go. Oh, and here's his student ID. Be sure to give that to him."
What the principal didn't mention was that he had received a rather good sum of money as a donation, and he was going to get a good chunk of it to his personal pocket. The only condition attached to the donation was that he accept the two students listed on their list. While the principal would've objected Ren Amamiya's transcript just based on his criminal record, the money was just too enticing. Now, to get ready for the 'real' delinquent.
4/11 Early morning
Kanji yawned as he made his way to his new school. He was living in a rather large and luxurious apartment by himself, paid for by Mitsuri. Luckily, he was only walking distance from the school and the nearest train station. As he was walking, he noticed rain already falling. Shrugging, he took out his umbrella that he had always prepared.
"Look, he's wearing our uniform!"
"Did we always have someone like that?"
"He looks like Sakamoto, doesn't he?"
"Another delinquent?"
"Doesn't he look a bit old though?"
Kanji ignored them all as he made his way to school. As he arrived, he noticed a student getting out of a car, waiving the person driving goodbye. The car didn't go far before turning into the teacher's parking lot. Kanji, however, did notice the female student turning her 'grin' into a frown as soon as the teacher drove off. It was a face of helplessness and sadness.
'The hell? Is this what high school in city are like? Full of drama? The only drama I had to deal with was Kashiwagi-sensei hitting on students, and that was mostly amusing and full of failure,' thought Kanji, his eyes narrowing.
He had been given a dossier of all the teachers here already, but something about the school already rubbed him the wrong way.
'Oh well. Best find this Ren Amamiya and get this over with,' thought Kanji.
Lunch Time
'The hell is he?" growled Kanji as he stomped around the grounds. So far, he had no luck finding this Ren Amamiya. Though what was quite concerning was apparently, almost the whole student population knew about his 'criminal record', which really rankled him. The fact that he hadn't even shown up and that people knew about him was concerning. One of the stipulations made on Ren's transfer was that none of the staff was to let slip about Ren's record to allow him a normal student life. Yet the news had already spilled all over the place. Kanji would have to find out just how that happened. Also, so far, he disliked Kamoshida very much. The man walked around with a smug grin as if he owned the whole school despite the fact he was just a gym teacher. Who cares if he was a former professional athlete and Olympic volleyball champion? It didn't give him the right to be so smug.
'Guess I'll resume the search after class. I have a general idea where his class is,' thought Kanji.
After School
Kanji quickly walked out of the classroom, heading upstairs until he stopped, leaning against the wall.
"Why did you allow a student like him to transfer here? He's already started associating with Sakamoto. A student with a criminal record, and the culprit of an assault case. At this rate, it'd be pointless how much I contribute to the school," complained Kamoshida.
'Wasn't the stipulation not to freaking blab about the case out loud?' cursed Kanji, 'The hell is this idiot doing, ruining the guy's chance. And the principal isn't even stopping him! They pamper the idiot way too much.'
Kanji took a peek over before noticing Ren Amamiya standing right there, overhearing the conversation, and groaned, 'And they're doing it right in front of the kid's face.'
He stayed hidden until the conversation was over before finally meeting Ren Amamiya.
"Yo, you're the other transfer student, right?" asked Kanji.
Ren blinked, staring at the much larger student before his brain realized that he had been asked a question, "Yes?"
"Name's Kanji Tatsumi. Heard about your little criminal record," continued Kanji.
Ren kept an emotionless face, but his fist curled up in anger at this.
"It's total bullshit," said Kanji bluntly, surprising Ren, "I don't believe it. You don't feel like the type of person who'd assault someone for no reason. Whatever, just came you to tell you that."
Kanji turned to walk away, but not before pausing, "If you ever need someone to talk to or a friend, just find me at the first floor 1-A with the seniors."
Ren could only look at Kanji's back, feeling a little hope well up inside him before heading towards the roof. He had someone else to talk to about that weird incident with the castle.
Night
"How do I set this up?" questioned Kanji as he looked at his brand new laptop in a room Mitsuru had rented for him. He had expected a small apartment with a bedroom and kitchen combined. Instead, it was a 5 room apartment all for himself. A large room for him to sleep, a medium-sized kitchen, an office equipped with several sewing equipment so he could continue making his little plushies, another office with a computer, and a bathroom.
"They went overboard with all this stuff," muttered Kanji as he opened his laptop, managing to find his way to actually powering it on before looking at it helplessly. It didn't help that his hometown barely used computers at all for his business. All exports stuff information he had let the Kirijo group handle and the only real electronic he used was a cell phone. Speaking of which, his new top of the line phone started to ring.
"Hello?" asked Kanji as he managed to answer it.
"Where are you?" asked Yu Narukami warmly from the other line, "The others are waiting for you to get on the video chat."
"Sorry senpai, I'm trying to figure out how to use this computer," sighed Kanji.
"Kanji, you don't have to call me that, it's been years since I was your upperclassman," chuckled Yu, "Just call me by my first name. Now then, I'll guide you to the voice chat, just follow my instructions."
"Force of habit," replied Kanji as he followed Yu's instructions, finally opening the video chat to reveal the rest of the investigation team online.
"Yo, the man of the hour arrives," grinned Yosuke "How's it feel to be undercover right now?"
"Yosuke, we'll be going undercover soon too," huffed Chie from her side, sharing the same screen with Yukiko.
"Yea, but he's the first one of us," shot back Yosuke.
"Chie, there's no need for your usual lover's spat here," giggled Yukiko, causing Chie and Yosuke to sputter. Chie and Yosuke were indeed dating after those years of 'lovers quarrel'.
"Ya hoo, how are you guys doing?" asked Rise.
"Greetings," nodded Naoto.
"This is beary cool!" squeaked Teddie in his human form from Yosuke's computer, shoving his face in front of Yosuke's screen, "Hi sensei! Hi everybody!"
"Dammit Teddie stop doing that and sit down," whined Yosuke as he shoved Teddie back down.
"And I believe that's everyone here," said Yu as he called to order, "Mitsuru will be on shortly. Has everyone gotten used to their new location?"
"Yeppers!" grinned Chie, "Yukiko and I got an apartment near Yukiko's college and the police station that I'll be working in!"
"Teddie and I are working at a Junes store branch in Tokyo. Well... Teddie is working as the official mascot there. I'm finishing up classes at a nearby college as well as working as a manager over there," shrugged Yosuke.
"My newest album and songs are a big hit!" squealed Rise, "I'll be touring around a bit, but I'll mostly be in Tokyo! My agent wants me to take a look at some rising models to see if they got some hidden talent. Yu, Yukiko, my song is totally based on us!"
Kanji coughed as he looked to the side. The relationship between Rise, Yu, and Yukiko could be best described as...a ménage à trois. It was obvious that to everyone that Rise wanted to pursue a relationship with Yu. However, it was also easy to see that Yu and Yukiko had been growing closer and closer during their time at Inaba. It was just unfortunate timing on Rise's part that she had moved into Inaba so later. One would think that seeing the two together would discourage Rise... until she confronted Yukiko and Yu on a date one day and declared her that she would fight for her right to love Yu. Yukiko, being surprised, blurted out the first thing that came into mind, which had been a tv drama she had been watching about two girls sharing one boy. That's right, Yukiko had been the one to suggest the thruple in front of Rise and Yu, shocking Rise and causing Yu to choke on a drink. One thing led to another... and the thruple was born.
"That's nice to hear," nodded Yu without even a hint of embarrassment, "I can't wait to hear it in person. As for me, I'll be working at as an intern with a Public Prosecutor of Tokyo District Special Investigation Department. No idea of the name yet, but she's somewhat of a big shot. That's something I'd like to get more experience from."
Yu, while working as one of the leaders of the Special Operatives team, code name: Seekers of Truth, was studying to be a lawyer. He wanted to be a lawyer that would seek out the truth, prosecute criminals and defend innocents through the court of law. It worked out well as Naoto would investigate the criminal, Chie would catch them, and Yu would make sure that the criminal wouldn't slip through.
"Mitsuru really went overboard here though. I'm living in one of the higher cost condos here with a nice kitchen, king-size bed, and apparently soundproof walls with privacy pretty much guaranteed. Rise and Yukiko could sneak in here easily."
"Kanji, are you eating well?" asked Naoto, living in one of her own apartments she had in Tokyo.
"Yea, I'm fine," grunted Kanji.
"Still... to be back in high school man... I couldn't wait to get out of there," sighed Yosuke, "But hey, you'll finally get that degree!"
"It's not like I wanted to do this," muttered Kanji, "My mother basically pushed me to do it."
"Yes, that does sound like your mom," smirked Naoto, "She's always been a strong woman."
"Damn right she is!" boasted Kanji.
"Alright, Mitsuru is coming, so be quiet," ordered Yu, causing everyone to fall silent.
"Report," said Mitsuru as her face appeared on the screen.
"Currently infiltrated the school with no problem," reported Kanji, "However, Ren Amamiya came extremely late. No idea why, though. Also, apparently the whole freaking school already knows about Amamiya's bogus criminal charges. I thought the school staff was supposed to keep quiet on that."
"They were," said Mitsuru, her eyes narrowing.
"Also, met a jackass teacher named Kamoshida. Apparently some bigshot former Olympic volleyball now coach of the volleyball team here. Apparently there's no other sports team here for some reason... and volleyball is very 'big' here. Dunno why it's not hard to slap a ball across a damn net. But the asshole openly complains about Ren being here in front of the kid and principal, and the principal did nothing to lower his voice or silence him. Damn fatass kisses up to him."
"I see... I'll have to speak with him about the consequences of breaking those terms," hummed Mitsuru.
"Worst off, the guy reminds me of Kashiwaga back at Inaba, but worse," stated Kanji.
"Worse how?" asked Yu sharply.
"We all know Kashiwaga, despite all her flirtations and watching it end in failure, never actually pushed it past the line. Kamoshida crosses that line without hesitation from what I can tell. He brazenly flirts and touches the girls, and not in a good way. Also thought this school was supposed to a prep school for academics, not sports."
"It should be, but if that's the case then nothing can be done now," sighed Mitsuru, "It is known for that, but perhaps in pursuit for pushing for both, they unintentionally forsaked the other. Have you spoken to the boy yet?"
"A bit," nodded Kanji, "Told him I didn't believe in those charges. He seemed surprised that someone would believe him. He doesn't seem like someone who'd assault someone. In fact... excluding his little side story, he might be a little like Yu."
"Should we be expecting him to also be a persona user and a wild card like me?" smiled Yu causing the others to laugh until..., "I'm quite serious. It might just happen. Seems like us wild cards are transfer students into another school."
"Well if he shows something like that, I'll let you know," said Kanji, "If that's all, then I needa get some sleep soon."
"Very well, that is all. I will look into why Amamiya's records was allowed to be known to the student population from my side. Labrys will be assigned to aid you all in your further endeavors as your technological agent. Dismissed," said Mitsuru.
4/12
"So you're the new intern," mused Sae Niijima as she looked at the newcomer, "I've seen your transcripts. Straight As in all your classes, and some glowing recommendations from your professors. I'm quite impressed with this one, in fact. Professor Anna Keat is one of the most notorious lawyers in this world, who teaches Criminal Law 100, or what she refers to her class as 'how to get away with murder'. Despite what she calls your 'naive' attitude, you were able to ace her class, surpassing what she thought would be her top students. Out of curiosity, why did you take her class Mr. Yu Narukami?"
Yu smiled before replying, "I heard her class was one of the hardest courses. I was interested in how she structured her cases and learn how to deal with it."
"And deal with it you did," chuckled Sae, "Despite her apparent hatred for you, she respects you greatly on how you defeated her top five students in a case where you took the opposition's side. She even wrote that if I refused you, that I was a fool and that she'd be happy if I could nudge you into her firm."
"A generous offer, but one I would have to decline," replied Yu, mentally adding the word 'again' as she did offer him a place in her firm after finishing her class. She had been very stubborn in trying to recruit him. Then again, it was extremely rare that a student that opposed her views could beat her top five students that she nutured and helped against his case only to lose.
"Well then, welcome to the Prosecutor's Office," welcomed Sae, "My name is Sae Niijima, and I'll be the one mentoring you. What are you hoping to get out of this internship?"
"The necessary skills to seek out the truth and bring them out to the light," answered Yu.
Done. Will I continue writing this? Perhaps, but it's not a high priority. I might write in the next chapter soon though as I really want to write the volleyball scene. It's going to be so epic... least it is in my head.
