I have no idea who I've become because I started this quarantine not even liking Boruto as much as I like Naruto and Shippuden (as I feel like most of us here do) but I feel highly inspired and motivated to write this after reflecting on Kishimoto's statement that a child of a Hyuga and Uchiha would have one byakugan and one sharingan. I wanted to explore how that kind of power could change the world. It's going to start with Sarada finding out she's pregnant after her relationship with Boruto is all but destroyed...because really, do they have that easy of a relationship anyway?
I also apologize if Boruto seems a little mean in this first chapter, I just needed to highlight the divide in their relationship and pump up the drama. Well, anyway, I hope you enjoy! :)
It wasn't supposed to be like this.
Sarada Uchiha had her whole life planned out, and she could tell anyone that it wasn't supposed to be this.
She had plans. She was going to be Hokage. She was going to become a jonin by seventeen, potentially join the Anbu to follow in the steps of Lord Sixth- since Lord Seventh was apparently still a genin- and then bide her time kicking ass until Naruto decided to step down as Hokage.
Yes, she had it all planned out. But those two pink little lines were never supposed to be a part of that plan.
"Sarada? Are you okay in there?"
She followed rules. Things like this didn't happen to her. She knew the statistics, she knew the odds, and just like everything in her life, she calculated all the risks down to the second- the moves she made in a battle, the plan b (no pun intended) strategies in case something went awry in her first calculations, the words to say to get Boruto to stop talking.
Oh no. BORUTO.
"Sarada?" The muffled thump of a knock at the door sounded against her ears, but she didn't process it. She just kept staring at the little stick that she knew was going to destroy her life.
No. That wasn't it. It wasn't the pregnancy test's fault that her life plans now burned to ashes in front of her. It was her fault. And Boruto's.
The first mistake was giving into teenage hormones instead of logic; they'd never lead anyone down a good path. She ignored the screams of her conscience and her mother's incessant sex talks and let his lips touch hers. Of course she had excuses: They were staring down the road of the beginning of summer, the weather had blown in consistently warm breezes, they had a long weekend ahead of them without work. All of this mixed intoxicatingly with her curious mind that wondered what it would be like to feel a boy's touch.
It all seemed so perfect honestly. Fumbling fingers, soft giggles. She trusted him. She was whisked away to another world that seemed so far away from her real life as a Konoha chunin, when in reality she was just a teenager sneaking into the buggy woods with her sweaty best friend who had zero idea what it was even like to kiss a girl. But it was easy to let go when she felt invincible. Nothing could hurt her.
But that was three weeks before their Fall Out. Maybe her mother was right- maybe sex really did complicate things. She always thought that maybe she was telling her that as a scare tactic. She heard rumors from some of the other genin and chunins, about people messing around on missions. They let their curiosity get the best of them. But not her. She never thought she'd be that person so none of the talks actually applied to her. Why would she ever want to have sex with Boruto or Mitsuki? Ew.
Yet, here she was. Maybe she really wasn't infallible.
"Sarada?" Cho Cho's voice echoed again outside the bathroom door.
This time Sarada processed her best friend's voice and hurriedly wiped the tears she realized were streaming down her face.
"Coming!" she squeaked. She shakily wrapped the test in toilet paper and smashed it deep into the trash can before placing more toilet paper and paper towels over it. The last thing she needed was for someone to find a pregnancy test in the bathroom of the Hokage's building. That would definitely spread.
Finding out she was pregnant here definitely was symbolic though; this was the building in which her dreams as a ninja caught fire and in which they now burned away to nothing.
She finally stepped out of the bathroom and plastered a smile to her face. "Hey, sorry about that!" she exclaimed and prayed Cho Cho wouldn't see through it.
"Are you feeling okay?" Cho Cho asked suspiciously. Her eyes grazed her cheeks, recognizing the tears stains. "You were in there for a really long time… We were supposed to leave fifteen minutes ago. I had the others go on out without me. I told them I'd wait for you and we'd meet them at the gate."
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" she lied. "I think I just ate something weird." She quickly looked away from Cho Cho's interrogating stare.
"Oh, that'll be great for this mission," Cho Cho replied. The girls stepped outside into the sun and Sarada pulled her bag tighter against her, as though anyone who saw her stomach would instantly know.
"Honestly I thought you were hiding because this mission might be weird for you."
"Weird for me?" Sarada asked. "Why?"
"Because I heard Boruto talking to Shikdai and Inojin. He said you guys were fighting and he was worried things were going to be awkward between you guys. You really haven't talked to each other in two weeks?"
Sarada felt her heart rate pick up. Oh no. He couldn't have… Did he mention what we did…? But if he had, she reminded herself, Cho Cho definitely would have brought it up.
"Y-yeah."
"But you guys always fight," she pushed. "I mean, what could have happened that would make Boruto of all people feel like the mission could be awkward?"
Should I tell her? Should she let her know how hard it is to stay best friends and teammates once feelings were involved? Feelings that neither of them were ready to admit to...or she wasn't? Because after how he acted, there was no way he actually liked-
"Hurry up, ladies!" Konohamaru waved his arm in the distance. Up ahead at the gates, he, Boruto, Mitsuki, Inojin, and Shikadai all were standing at the gates, the boys looking more and more impatient with each passing second.
Sarada began jogging toward them. "I'm really sorry!" she apologized profusely. Even her voice sounded strange to her now, higher pitched, like at any moment it could crack and all of her would spill out onto the ground. She felt like she had to overcompensate to appear normal.
"I don't run until I have to," Cho Cho called after her.
The boys all groaned and rolled their eyes. "We were supposed to leave almost a half hour ago!" Inojin yelled.
"Can you be any slower…" Boruto mumbled as Sarada approached.
She felt a shock of electricity run through her body as she suddenly fought the urge to turn on him. She pictured getting in his face and screaming at him. It's your fault I'm late! Literally! She wanted to scream. Can you be any more inconsiderate?!
But instead she turned from him and ignored his glares.
"Are we all ready to go?" Konohamaru asked. "Ready to hear the details?"
They all nodded. They only knew it was supposed to be a B-rank mission to retrieve important scrolls from another village.
"...but there's the potential of seeing bandits once we cross the border, and since this is so important we need all of you," Konohamaru finished.
Yes! Sarada thought. This would be a good mission to get her mind off things. There was the potential of battles and Boruto had more of his friends there so they could avoid each other as much as possible.
It was easy travel at first. The danger of bandits still seemed far away, so the boys all joked around as they ran, trying to trip each other or throw each other from the path. Sarada and Cho Cho held up the back and listened to Konohamaru finally demand they stop messing around.
Sarada felt her heart ping achingly as she watched Boruto throw a mischievous grin back at their sensei. For a moment she pictured herself running alongside him and laughing at whatever line he just sarcastically threw at Konohamaru, but she shook it out of her mind. No. She couldn't let her feel this way. He hurt her. She hurt him. There was no way they could walk out of this now…
She wasn't even sure if she could tell him that she was- NO. She wouldn't allow herself to think of that right now. Mission now, personal life later. Emotions just got in the way of being able to do her job, she knew that. She'd decide on what to do when she was back in the village. Women had options these days- she didn't have to have a baby if she didn't want to. Especially not with Boruto. Yes, when she returned she could probably talk to Shizune and-
At that moment the world tilted. Sarada dropped to her knees as a wave of nausea washed over her.
Cho Cho stopped. "Oh my god, are you okay?" she asked, stooping beside her. "Hey, guys, stop! Something is wrong with Sarada!"
Oh, god, no. The last thing she needed was an audience. As the boys turned around in alarm, Sarada felt her face heat up and her stomach contract. NO.
With everyone watching- and of all people, Boruto- she spewed her breakfast all over the ground.
"Ew," she heard someone whisper quietly.
"What happened? Are you sick?" Konohamaru was now standing over her. She heaved again.
"She said earlier it was something she ate," Cho Cho responded.
"Hm." Konohamaru bent down next to her, ignoring the puddle of puke that was rapidly spreading in front of them. "Do you need to go back? We can't risk you being out here sick."
Sarada looked up weakly, forcing her eyes to meet Konohamaru's, and shook her head. That wasn't an option. If she went back she'd have to explain she was sick, and she didn't know if she'd be able to lie to her mom. She had to keep going.
"I-I'm okay," she choked out.
Konohamaru took out a water bottle and handed it to her. "Here." He looked up at the sky that was beginning to change to purple. "The sun is starting to set, and we're almost to the border so we can rest for the night there. Okay?"
Sarada nodded. Konohamaru reached out to help her up, and she weakly took his hand.
The team traveled slower as the sun quickly began to set over them. Sarada noticed that out of all of them, Boruto was the only one who hadn't asked her if she was okay, or, in Inojin's case, just thrown her a tight lipped smile. It was as though he was actively avoiding her. How do you feel about that? She thought she wanted him to ignore her, but for some reason, it didn't feel right now.
After an hour of travel, they finally arrived at a decent spot to spend the night. Everyone split up to pitch in to find food and firewood to settle in for the night, and she was secretly thankful that Konohamaru ordered her to rest while the others worked.
"Don't push yourself." Konohamaru came up behind Sarada as she breathed fire onto the wood Cho Cho had just returned with. She looked up at him. Through the shadows, she could see worry etched into his face. Shit. She knew she was looking bad then.
"I'm fine!" she squeaked out again and tried to smile. She hoped that the shadows were hiding her pale and listless features that she was sure she was sporting. "Look!" she tried again as a distraction. "Food!"
Konohamaru turned to see Mitsuki and Shikadai approaching with fish they caught at the stream. From where she was standing, six yards away, Sarada could still smell it. The strong scent smacked her in the face and her stomach turned again. Wasn't that a pregnancy symptom? She could hear Sakura's voice in the back of her mind, lovingly recanting her own pregnancy experience. "I couldn't smell anything without feeling sick!" she had laughed. "Even the smell of your dad's toothpaste upset me!"
"Excuse me," someone said coldly behind her. She turned to see a straight faced Boruto standing six inches from her. She gaped at him for a moment. This was the closest he was to her in weeks; she was honestly shocked he was even talking to her.
"Well? Aren't you going to move?" Boruto held up the fish. "I'd like to cook these, you know." His eyes were like ice as he stared her down.
The scent wafted into her nose and she could feel herself waver on her feet again. Coupled with the cold look in his eyes, it was almost too much to handle. Only weeks ago she was staring into those blue eyes, her head on his chest, their fingers intertwined. Now he stood in front of her, staring reproachfully at her as though she was nothing more than a bug he couldn't wait to kill. So much had changed... She opened her mouth to try to speak, but nothing came out.
"What?" Boruto spat. "You're just going to ignore me? Real mature, Sarada."
At that moment she snapped. In between not feeling well, the fish ravaging her nostrils, and now Boruto being rude, she couldn't stop it from boiling over. She finally unleashed.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" she screeched, her voice echoing into the forest. "Can you not give me one second to move out of the way? Can you stop being a dick for one freaking second?!"
Boruto's eyes widened and Konohamaru and Cho Cho paused to watch her, not knowing what to do.
"Can you cut me a break?!" She felt her eyes begin to well up with tears. Normally she wouldn't cry; afterall, it was a simple spat with Boruto, and she was used to those. But her hormones were raging and all the pent up stress and anger were finally coming to a head, so the tears leaked from her eyes as she screamed at her former best friend.
Her mixed emotions churned in her head just as her stomach did. She wanted nothing more than to both cry in his arms and punch him directly in the face. She used to believe they'd always be together, a team to reckon with, but now when she needed him most, he wasn't there.
And she didn't know how to cross that schism back to him.
Boruto's eyes softened then flashed, a sign that his own wall faltered then solidified again. "Me cut you a break?!" he screamed back when Sarada finally took a breath. "When the hell have you ever done that for me?!"
Inojin, Mitsuki, and Shikadai quickly ran back to the base after hearing the disruption; they stopped just outside the light of the fire as they realized what was going on. Shikadai was about to break the circle, but Mitsuki put an arm out to hold him back. "Let them go," he muttered softly.
"I didn't even do anything!" Sarada spat back at him. "I'm trying to make us a fire!" I'm trying not to fall apart! Can't you see what's happening?!
"And I didn't do anything either but you started yelling at me anyway!" He waved the fish in her face. "Stop being such…" He paused like he was looking for a word to say. "...Such a bitch!"
At that moment the world began to twist again. A bitch…? He never called her that before… He'd never… Boruto would never…
Konohamaru finally jumped into action and jumped between the two. "HEY, knock it off! Whatever is happening you need to put it aside-"
Sarada's knees buckled as Boruto's words mixed with the fish scent inside her head. Boruto's eyes widened and he took a step backwards again as though realizing he went too far. "Sarada, I-"
You think I'm a bitch? But before he could finish his sentence Sarada vomited again. All over his shoes.
The morning sickness had started a few days before and only happened at night. Still, it was enough to let her know that something was amiss. She allowed herself to ignore Boruto and the possibility until that morning when the sickness had lasted all night into the morning, and she could no longer ignore it. Before their mission, she locked herself in the bathroom and took the test- she needed to know for sure before she left. She couldn't live in that agony anymore.
And now she watched in horror as Boruto hopped around, violently ripping at his shoes in an effort to get them off without touching Sarada's vomit.
"I'm sorry-" she tried to say, but her voice was overpowered as the others came running in at full force to take control of the situation. Konohamaru had snatched Sarada up as the boys pulled Boruto to the ground to let him take off his shoes.
Konohamaru had set her down behind a tree and handed her more water as Boruto raved behind them. "You said you were okay. If you are sick you really-"
"I'm fine, sensei," she had pleaded. She spent another five minutes trying to convince him that she was okay, that it was just breakfast, to please not send her back to the village. She reminded him that if he did that, then they'd lose almost a full day because they couldn't go on without two members; whoever took her back would have to find a replacement and travel back to them.
She had convinced him to allow her to go to bed without dinner, and listened intently to their conversations around the fire for the rest of the night. Konohamaru just said he sent her to bed and no one mentioned the incident again; even the boys didn't dare to make fun of Boruto for his shoes.
She still laid awake as their conversations dwindled along with the fire light, and when she was sure she was the last one awake, that was when she could no longer fight the emotions. She tiptoed away from the sight and when she was far enough away that the others couldn't hear her, the sobs finally racked her chest.
Sarada knelt on the forest floor and hugged her knees to her chest, letting the tears flow freely down her face. Everything was ruined. She was pregnant, the mission was already going wrong, she threw up on Boruto's shoes, and he thought she was a bitch? No matter how many times they had fought, he never once called her that...was it true? Did he hate her? Did she ruin their friendship, just as his child grew inside her? Could she fix this?
"Sarada…" She hadn't heard anyone approach as she cried through her fears. She jumped to see Konohamaru kneeling next to her, his concerned face illuminated in the flashlight he carried.
"I-I'm sorry, senei," she choked out, though she wasn't really sure what she was apologizing for.
"You have nothing to be sorry about." He sat next to her and put an arm around her, pulling her close to him as though he sensed that was what she desperately needed; her body shook against his.
"Do you want to tell me what happened back there?" he asked softly.
"That I threw up on Boruto's shoes?"
"No, not that." Konohamaru shook his head. "Whatever's going on between you and Boruto? I talked to him after you left. What the hell is going on?"
"Well, what did he say?" she spat.
"He said nothing, but that's because he's a brat," he replied coolly. "I knew I'd have better luck with you."
She couldn't tell him that they slept together, could she…? Or would that get back to Lord Seventh and make the whole thing explode?
"For what it's worth, and I don't know if this will help, he is sorry he called...that," Konohamaru continued. "I reamed him out for that."
"Thank you…" Sarada muttered.
Konohamaru sighed. "Sarada, you know you can tell me anything right?"
Something in his voice made her look up at him, an edge that let her know he suspected something, though she wasn't quite sure what it was. "Of course," she lied. What did Boruto actually say to him? He had to be wondering what caused Boruto to go that far…
She sat up and tried to force a smile onto her face. "It's late. Really, Boruto and I are fine. And I think whatever I ate is out of my system now. It's just been a really, really long day." Sarada held Konohamaru's gaze for another moment, keeping the smile plastered to her lips to convince him. After a moment Konohamaru's hard eyes softened and he began to stand. "Fine," he conceded. "Keep your secrets." He helped her up and they walked back to the campsite in silence.
No one spoke much the next morning as though to avoid any conversation about what happened the night before. The tension between Boruto and Sarada was palpable, but they were able to avoid each other. Sarada chugged water to keep her breathing steady although the tang of vomit choked the back of her throat. She was starting to think they were in the clear and that the rest of the journey would be easy when the first enemy kunai whipped past them.
Sarada immediately pushed down the sensation to puke and activated her sharingan as the others sprung into action.
She could instantly see why this manpower was necessary- these weren't ordinary bandits. She was stuck fighting two at once, and she could sense that she wasn't working to her full power. Under normal circumstances she knew she could handle them both, and at first she could easily copy both their moves. Maybe I really can keep working while pregnant, she thought, easily dodging. She was able to kick two of them back and one Mitsuki was fighting as well using a fireball. Suddenly, a sluggish feeling weighed her down. She faltered for a moment, gasping for breath, the world turning upside down. At that moment, one of the men found a hole in her moves and was able to kick her directly in the stomach.
She went flying.
"Oh, Uchiha brat, huh?" One of them smirked. "Not so great with sharingan after all?"
Sarada could feel her chakra deplete as though being siphoned directly out of her. Is this what being pregnant did? Did it suck your energy and chakra? She lay on the ground, struggling to push herself up, when the man who kicked her cornered her. Come on, Sarada, MOVE! But pain shot through her whole body and all she could do was cower underneath his stare.
"SARADA! GET HER!" Suddenly she heard Boruto's voice to her right, but the person who swooped in to pick her up before the man had a chance to attack was Mitsuki.
"It's okay," he murmured as the fight continued behind him. She could make out Boruto's voice, but it was growing muffled like they were underwater. Was she underwater?
Mitsuki gingerly placed her in the grass. Pain radiated throughout her body and she struggled to stay afloat. Above her, Mitsuki's figure floated in and out of focus.
"M-Mitsuki," she sputtered. Was this it? Was she dying? What about the baby...
"The baby will be okay," Mitsuki said matter-of-factly.
Wait, WHAT? "T-the baby?" she slurred.
"You just asked if the baby will be okay," he said. "Your baby will be just fine."
"H-How do you…" she tried to sputter but she couldn't get any more words out as she sank beneath the surface of her consciousness.
Of course he knew. Mitsuki knew everything. Mitsuki could read them even more than they could read each other. She was about to ask if anyone else knew but before she had a chance, she blacked out.
