Chapter 1.
=Hiccup's POV=
[June 2; Dusk]
[Middle Of The Sea]
Everything hurt. That was the first thing I felt as I woke up and let my eyes readjust from being closed. My vision began to clear as I glanced around and found myself hanging onto a broken sheet of wood while floating in the middle of the ocean. I was half in the water, halfway out. There was nobody around me. I don't know where I am, how I got here. Nor do I even remember what happened. The last thing I recall was being on Trader Johann's ship with Toothless and getting scared than mad. My mind goes blank after that, so I must have lost consciousness for a while. It was just after noon time last time I was awake, and now it's sunset. I was utterly alone; I didn't even have Toothless. I don't know what happened to him after getting angry and knocking out all afternoon. No one would come for me. I don't have anyone or anything anymore. I've been betrayed, heartbroken, rejected, and hurt. And now I'm by myself, barely hanging to consciousness. I'm cold, tired, hungry, weak, injured, and in pain as far as physical feelings went. For mental, I'm numb and empty. I have no strength to get myself out of this, and honestly, with all I've been through, I don't want to fight to save myself. I just want to let go and die. There was no point in holding on.
I sighed and closed my eyes. All I had to do was wait to fall asleep, or knock out again. From there, death would come to take me. I knew it wouldn't take long with the state my body was in; I could already feel myself slipping back into the darkness. Just a bit longer and I'd be free from the nightmare; of all the pain.
"Look at all this…" I heard a voice. No, I was obviously delusional because there was no one around.
"Should we get the bosses?" One asked.
"Might as well. We could possibly be able to salvage some of it?" Was mentioned by someone.
"So much destruction. Must have been a dragon attack on a passing ship; there's a lot of cargo in the water, broken boat pieces judging by the shape." Stated another. Okay, I was actually hearing voices because it was all too specific and clear to be my imagination.
"Where's the crew then?" A voice inquired.
"Taken, and eaten by dragons? Maybe died and sank? No idea how long ago this happened." Another voice sounded.
"I don't see any survi-," One began.
"We're not paying you to stand around! Get back to work!" Came a rougher voice with an accent. That kind of got my attention; it sounded familiar.
"But sir-!" Someone tried to protest.
"Are you refusing orders?" Another voice chimed in now, calmer, but still with a slightly threatening tone that I also recognized.
"N-No, sir. No, not at all. W-We just thought you might want to collect any of the cargo, maybe it could be useful?" The male wondered.
"Very well. Grab what you can as we pass through and-," The calm voice began.
"We got a body!" One of the crew shouted. Were they talking about me? "Can't tell if still alive or not." The guy added.
"You there in the water, are you still alive?" The rougher voice sounded. I had a choice to make, let them know I'm alive, or just continue to lay here and wait for death. "Guess he's dead?"
"Not necessarily. Perhaps he's just unconscious, my dear brother." The calm one stated. My eyes snapped open, but I didn't move. I absolutely knew who that voice belonged to now; Viggo Grimborn. And if he said brother, that meant the other familiar voice I heard was Ryker Grimborn's. They're alive? How are they alive? Ryker was supposed to have drowned in the fight between the Submaripper and Shellfire. Viggo fell into a volcano that erupted! I didn't understand, and at the same time; I couldn't risk them figuring out who I was or that I was alive right now. "Lower the ladder. We'll go down and check the status…" Viggo said now.
Great. Was it too late to just slip off the wood and sink into the water? Apparently, while I was deep in thought on how to make myself seem dead, Viggo and Ryker had come down the ladder and were adjusting carefully to get on the board I was hanging from. I closed my eyes to seem unconscious, but with how I felt right now; I think I was actually slipping back into an unconscious state. "Is this board going to hold us both?" Ryker inquired.
"If we move slow, yes. It's somewhat thick and large. We'll have to mind the boy; we don't want our movements to make him slip off." Viggo informed. "Now, let's shift together to check on him. Moving at separate times will make it unbalanced." He added. I felt them moving closer and I pleaded to knock out or die. What I didn't expect to hear when I felt their shadows over me was gasps of shock.
"Hiccup Haddock?" Both Ryker and Viggo said.
"What is he doing in the middle of the ocean? Alone at that? I don't think I've ever seen him without the other riders, or even his Night Fury." Viggo remarked.
"It could be a trap; the others could be around waiting to strike." Ryker huffed.
"The riders don't even know we're still alive, Ryker. Dragon's Edge was abandoned, assuming that they all packed up after our demises and returned to their home islands." Viggo reminded. "No, I don't believe this is a trick. If the riders knew we were alive; we'd have been attacked while crossing through the Archipelago." He mentioned in a matter of fact tone. So we weren't in the Archipelago?
"So what do we do?" Ryker asked.
"No decisions can be made until we know if he's even alive," Viggo noted. I felt a hand touch my cheek, and then shift under my nose.
"He's cold but breathing. I can only gather that he is probably unconscious, and has been in the water a while for his body temperature to drop this far." Viggo concluded. I should have held my breath or something. "He's alive, but I don't assume for very much longer if he remains like this."
"What are you thinking, Viggo?" Ryker questioned.
"I suppose I'm wondering how this happened. As stated before; he's in the middle of the ocean, obviously unconscious, but alone." Viggo replied. "Doesn't quite make sense."
"Guess it doesn't, but it still doesn't answer what I asked before now that we've confirmed he's alive. At least for the time being. As you said, he'll probably die by morning if left like this." Ryker remarked. "We could nab him, keep him prisoner?" Ryker suggested. Oh, Gods no. Please no!
"To what point would it be beneficial to us to capture and imprison him, brother? He doesn't have anything we want. No dragons, no information. If the riders are looking for him, and discover us to have him; we end up back in the fighting and be there a next time, we may not end up so lucky to escape death." Viggo retorted.
"That's my point. Everything he caused us to lose, almost including our lives. Revenge would be sweet." Ryker chuckled.
"What do you plan to do, Ryker? Bring him aboard the ship, and nurse him back to health to put him back in the same state?" Viggo offered, clearly sarcastic.
"Wouldn't be the first time we've done that," Ryker answered.
"True. Fine, but he's your charge." Viggo gave in. No. No. I wouldn't go through this again. I'd rather be left here to die and end the nightmare.
"Just let me die…" I mumbled weakly. I felt them shift a little to be in front of where my face was. I opened my eyes to see them when they moved me a bit to be able to see me better.
"What?" Viggo inquired, surprised. "What did you say?" He repeated.
I struggled to keep my eyes open and Viggo lifted my head and moved his hand away afterward. "Let me die. Please? If you intend to imprison and torture me…Please just let me die here…"
"Why do you desire such?" Viggo asked. I couldn't hold my head up as it dropped back down and I winced; the darkness was creeping back into my vision. "Hiccup, why do you want to die?" He pushed, shaking me a little to keep me conscious.
I felt myself slipping again. I couldn't stay awake. "Nothing left to live for…" I said, seeing the surprise on both their faces. "I want the nightmare that has become my life to end…I want to die. So please…Just let die…" Everything went black.
=Normal POV=
The Grimborn brothers were shocked to have found Hiccup in the water in the state he was, but more so when they learned that he wanted to die, and had basically pleaded that they leave him to die there. All they gathered was Hiccup saying he had nothing to live for and wanted the nightmare his life had become to end before Hiccup ended up going unconscious again. Ryker scoffed, crossing his arms over one another and walking back to the ladder to climb up and onto the ship.
"No point in revenge when it won't affect him. Leave him to die, Viggo. It's what he wants anyway." Ryker grabbed one side of the ladder and looked back at Viggo, who was still looking at Hiccup. All the movement on the flat wood shifted Hiccup to start slipping off and sinking further into the water. Ryker prepared to climb up as Viggo could almost not even see Hiccup anymore.
"No," Viggo said as Ryker quickly looked at his younger brother to see him grabbing Hiccup's wrist before it went out of sight under the water. Viggo pulled Hiccup back up and carefully got him on the wood fully.
"What are you doing? He said to let him die." Ryker remarked, surprised at Viggo's actions.
"He said to let him die if we intended on imprisoning and torturing him." Viggo corrected as he checked to make sure Hiccup was still breathing.
"Which is exactly what we were going to do. Regardless, the boy said it's what he wanted; to die." Ryker reminded.
"And I want to know why he wants that," Viggo informed.
"He told us why Viggo. Nothing left to live for and wants the nightmare to end." Ryker stated.
"But I want to understand why he believes those things, Ryker," Viggo replied. "Because it is not the Hiccup we know."
"I guess it does seem off. What do you plan to do?" Ryker wondered now.
"For now, just bring him on the ship and have him treated. Nothing can be done if he dies." Viggo decided.
"If that's what you want to do…" Ryker moved back over to Viggo and Hiccup, bending slightly to pick Hiccup up.
"Easy with him." Viggo urged. The two made their way to the ladder as Viggo went up first and then Ryker so Viggo and some crew members could take Hiccup from Ryker. "Take him to mine and my brother's chamber, summon the healer." He ordered as Ryker was coming over the railing, following Viggo. The crew brought up the ladder and resumed their duties.
"Stay on course," Ryker mentioned to the man steering the ship before and Viggo went out of sight to their shared chamber.
. . .
[Night]
[Dragon Hunter Ship]
Viggo and Ryker could only remain long enough for the healer to tell them after an examination of Hiccup that there was nothing more they could do and leave him to her. The brothers returned to work while the healer worked on Hiccup. It took quite a bit of time before Viggo and Ryker were summoned back to their room and now standing before the healer to hear the report of her findings while treating Hiccup.
"Will he live?" Viggo asked.
"It's too early to tell, I'm afraid." The woman replied calmly. "The most damage I found that needed to be taken care of right away was his low body temperature. All I could do was strip him of the wet clothing, dress him in dry things, wrap him in the heavy furs, and keep the fire going. This is why you may have noticed that we're almost right next to the woodstove. It took a bit just to bring his temperature up, and even now; he's still a bit cold to the touch. I believe, though, with more time it will return to normal, and right now he is not in danger of passing from the extended exposure to the low temperatures. Nor losing any limbs from frostbite." She explained.
"Good to know," Ryker remarked. "Anything else?"
"Many, many injuries. Old, new, small, big. Some beginning to develop an infection. They're everywhere." The healer responded.
"Self-inflicted?" Viggo inquired.
"No, I'm afraid the only way the boy would have gotten these wounds is through another giving them to him. Whoever did this, Chief; it was torture." The healer revealed. "I can't say for sure how long it happened, but he endured repetitive and brutal sessions of torture." She added.
"Is there cause to worry of him dying through an infection?" Ryker questioned.
"As I said, sir, it's too early to know how this will go. I've done all I can by keeping him warm, cleaning out, and treating the open wounds. I've wrapped the injuries. I gave him something for pain and the infections that already began. I did my best to feed him, just broth. I feared starvation would kill him before infections did. For the moment, all we can do is monitor him to see if his condition gets worse or he begins to show progress while maintaining the wound, infection, and feeding care." The woman stated.
"When will he wake?" Viggo wondered.
"I'm afraid I don't have the answer to that, my chief. You stated he passed out before bringing him aboard and was possibly also unconscious before he was found. Situations like these, where it is prolonged, physical abuse to the body, can result in someone becoming comatose. I know not what the boy went through, nor for how long. For him to want to die, as I understand it, then perhaps he also sustained mental and emotional abuse. The three in combination were likely used to break him. Body, mind, and spirit. There is no telling how long he will sleep, or remain unconscious. There is no telling how the recovery will go. And even if those two factors change where he awakens and recovers fully…" The healer looked at them both.
"There is still the state of his mind, which is not something we can treat with medicine. That's a separate recovery altogether, and usually the hardest and longest to get through because it depends on many different things." Viggo nodded, understanding.
"All we can do is continue to treat the physical side of things." The healer informed softly.
"Very well then. You will continue to monitor and treat him until the situation changes." Viggo ordered.
"Yes, Chief Viggo." The healer bowed her head to them both. "I will return to check on him before the crew retires for the night."
With a nod from Viggo as his approval of the healer's claim to return later, the woman left their chambers and ensured the door was closed. "Guess it makes sense why the boy said if we planned to torture him to let him die," Ryker remarked. "He already got tortured to the point of wanting death to never have to go through it again."
"Yes, it would appear to be the case and a very valid response for someone who has endured a lot," Viggo said.
"So what now? You got your reason for why he wanted to die. We patch him up and send him on his way? You know he'll tell the riders we're alive and we'll go right back to fighting." Ryker looked at Viggo.
The younger of the brothers just stared at Hiccup, calculating many things about the situation silently. "We have a possible reason for why he wanted death. And given the provided information, it is likely to be the case. However," Viggo paused. "I don't believe it could be the only reason. The state we found him in, absolutely from physical abuse. But mental and emotional, brother, those can come from torturous methods or a change in situations from everyday life. Hiccup claimed that his life had become a nightmare he wanted to end. That he had nothing left to live for."
"What are you suggesting, Viggo?" Ryker stared, wondering what was going through his brother's mind.
"Ryker, we both know that Hiccup trains dragons and rides a Night Fury. He has many friends and allies who stand on his side and fight for his cause. Not just in his own tribe, but others too. The berserkers. The outcasts. The Defenders of the Wing. The boy is smart, passionate, caring, protective, sarcastic, spirited, and never gave up no matter what we threw at him." Viggo stated.
"Yes, we know all that about him. I'm not seeing your point in there being more to this." Ryker replied.
"When Hiccup and I faced off at the mouth of the volcano; I was holding Astrid, his lover, against him. A simple exchange, her life for the Dragon Eye. Astrid tried to protest for him not to give up the eye for her, and I asked Hiccup right out are you really going to give up your future, all the wonderful years you have ahead of you, for that. Hiccup told me no, no I'm not. And he threw the Dragon Eye into the volcano." Viggo said, recalling the story as he looked at Hiccup again, then back to Ryker. "The point is that it doesn't make sense, as I said before we brought him aboard the ship. Why would Hiccup say he has nothing left, and that his life had become a nightmare he wanted to end…When just over half a year ago he refused to give up his future?"
Ryker eyed Viggo a bit, and his younger brother did make a good argument about the overall situation. "Well, I agree with you, Viggo. It doesn't make sense, but what do you plan to do? Wait for him to wake up and ask? He's never going to tell you; we're enemies."
"He knew we were his enemies before he passed out and still replied when asked. Brother, you do not notice small instances that provide information. On that sheet of wood earlier, we spoke for quite some moments believing Hiccup was unconscious. But did you not find it odd that upon his awakening that he did not panic to find us there?" Viggo questioned as Ryker went to say something, but stopped and thought about it to realize that Viggo was right. "There was no panicking, wondering where he was, or even confusion to the situation. All he said was that if we planned to capture and torture him, to let him die. He did not beg, or plead in fear. He just asked us to let him die. So I believe that perhaps he was not unconscious when we joined him on the wooden slate, and knew we were there. He wasn't angry, or scared, Ryker. Frankly, I heard sadness."
"Again, I believe and agree with you. But I still don't think he's going to wake up and be willing to just tell us whatever happened to him." Ryker shrugged. "Maybe the girl left him?" He offered.
Viggo shook his head. "The reasoning would have to be more than that. Ryker. Hiccup Haddock was not just romantically involved with this girl; he is also the Hooligan Tribe of Berk's only heir. His father, Stoick, is the current chief, and Hiccup is Stoick's only son. I do not know much of the chieftess; she never came up in research. Regardless, this entire situation with him saying he has nothing to live for and his life becoming a nightmare lines up with this boy that never gave up, who we have been at war with since our first meeting. Physically, they are the same body and person. But their personalities are opposite and such a thing only happens when something big has happened to shift a way of thinking." Viggo explained with his hands at his sides before moving to his desk and sitting down to go over a few things.
"I don't expect Hiccup to wake up and tell us what happened," Viggo informed. "But I do believe that perhaps with time and the knowledge we saved our enemy…He may come around. Recall what I said to the healer, brother. Physical recovery is not the same as mental and emotional. Those two processes require many steps to reach completion, and it is not accomplished overnight. Depending on the situation behind trauma, tragedy, or whatever it may be can take days, weeks, perhaps even years before one becomes recovered. And all of it depends on the victim's decision to heal or not. So all we can do for now is wait for him to wake up and then we will take the next course of action. Until then, we still have a ship to manage and a business to run."
Ryker looked at Hiccup once more before heading off to check on ship operations. Viggo remained in the chamber to go over numbers and letters, occasionally glancing up to check on Hiccup's status. Viggo understood why he saved Hiccup, it was for his own curiosity to be satiated by knowing what drove the Hiccup they knew into the Hiccup they found earlier tonight. Viggo knew it would not be instant, but he was certain Hiccup would come around in time. If Hiccup truly had nothing left to live for, then where was the harm in telling him what had happened to cause the change? That was Viggo's thoughts on it, at least. For now, as he told Ryker; there was nothing more that could be done but wait for Hiccup to wake up.
*Author's Note; Alright, folks. Here we go, another new story. I apologize that I've not yet updated For Whatever May Come, my muse for it sort of slumped when all this Global Pandemic stuff started. I will get it done, you all know I finish every story I start. But while I find my mojo for FWMC, please enjoy this story, Anything Is Possible. It's Hiccup X OC, Rated M, and I have 30 chapters pre-written already, so I will be able to upload at least one chapter every couple of days. Anyway, thank you for your continued support and patience! -Nightstar.*
