A/N- Hey guys here's a Gotham one-shot that is AU, it takes place a few days after Barbara tells Jim that she's pregnant, enjoy.

Disclaimer- I don't own Gotham.

It was early afternoon, and the cops at the GCPD were busy as usual. There were talks with the mainland about possible reunification, and if everything went well then their nightmare of being cut off from the rest of the country would soon be over. That's if nothing happened within the next few days. So, everybody was making sure that nothing would ruin this chance. That meant making sure nothing drastic would happen. Everybody's main focus was making sure that everything went well, everybody except one person.

Jim was inside his office, sitting on the edge of his desk. While everybody else had spent the entire morning, and now the afternoon working Jim was in his office thinking. That seemed to be the only thing he was doing for the past three days. While everybody else worked he would sit in his office, and think. It was selfish on his part but it's not like he didn't have a lot to think about. Barbara was pregnant, with his baby.

Barbara Kean; the woman who he'd been engaged to at one point in his life, who was now a criminal, who had killed people, and had attempted to kill him along with Lee was now going to be the mother of his child. Jim ran his fingers through his hair with both of his hands before looking at the bottle of whiskey that was sitting on top of his desk. He was tempted to drink it but that's what got him in this situation to begin with. Sure he hadn't been drunk but he had been looking for something to distract him from his sorrows. So, he'd been prepared to drink them away until Barbara had come in, and that's when it'd happened. He'd been so desperate for a distraction that night that he'd have done anything to forget his troubles. He should have turned her away when he had the chance but he didn't, and now he was paying for it. As he continued to look at the bottle he couldn't help but think about how he should've just gotten drunk instead then he looked at the floor before groaning in misery.

There was a knock at the door. Jim looked up, "Who is it?" He asked. "It's Harvey", the voice answered. Jim sighed, "Come in", he granted. Harvey poked his head in the door, "You sure?" He asked before coming in. He didn't want to disturb Jim if he wasn't in the mood for talking. Jim nodded, "Yeah", he answered. In truth he could use the company. He hadn't really talked to anybody in the past few days. He'd wanted to talk to Lee at first but she wouldn't talk to him. After Barbara had made her announcement Lee just walked out of the office. She wouldn't even look at him. Jim tried to explain himself but she just ignored him as she walked out the GCPD, and possibly out of his life.

He couldn't blame her. After what they'd been through with their own baby, he goes, and gets Barbara pregnant. He could only imagine what must be going through Lee's mind. Was she upset? Was she angry? If so was she angry at him, at Barbara, or both? He didn't blame her though if she was angry. But looking back now, when he saw her face after Barbara's announcement, she hadn't looked angry; she didn't even look shocked. If anything she looked like she didn't care, and Jim couldn't help but suspect that she didn't.

"How are you doing?" Harvey asked. Jim looked back at the floor, "I don't know", he said with a sigh. "Have you talked to Lee?" Harvey asked. "She won't talk to me", Jim said bitterly. Harvey raised an eyebrow, "So, you've seen her?" He asked. Jim shook his head slowly, "No, but I know she wouldn't want to, I'm afraid I blew it", he said. He thought back to the look on Lee's face. The look that basically said that she didn't care. Add that to her not wanting to talk to him, and Jim knew that it was truly over between them. It hurt but maybe he deserved it after everything he did to her over the years, and that maybe she was better off without him.

"I'm sorry to hear that partner", Harvey said with a sad look in his eyes. "So am I", Jim said with an equal look of sadness in his own eyes. Harvey rubbed the back of his head as he searched for the right words, "Have-you-uh-talked to Barbara? You know-since she told the news?" He asked. Jim shifted his gaze towards him, "No", he said quietly. Harvey groaned, "Jim-", he started to say before he was interrupted. "She doesn't want to talk to me either", Jim snapped as he narrowed his eyes. Which was true, she didn't stick around to talk to him after she'd told him. Just like Lee she'd left, and it was before he could even process her news. He didn't know what it was with these women not wanting to stick around so he could say his piece. It was like his opinion didn't matter.

"How'd this even happen in the first place?" Harvey asked. Jim gave him a look, "Harvey I really shouldn't have to explain that to you", he said. A look of disgust crossed Harvey's face as he groaned while quickly shaking his head, trying not to get a mental picture of Jim, and Barbara together. "No, that's not what I meant, I meant why would you do it in the first place? I thought you knew better?" Harvey asked. "I did, I mean I do. Look I don't know why it happened it just did. With everything that's been going on, I just needed something that would help me forget", Jim explained.

"Did you forget?" Harvey asked. Jim shook his head bitterly, "For a while but it's hard to forget some of the things that have happened since the bridges blew", he said in a low voice. His mind went back to the destruction at Haven. He remembered it as if it just happened the other day. He remembered the fire, and it's smell. He remembered the smoke, how it stung his eyes, and how it became so hard to breath after a while. But most of all he remembered the people; how they were rushing out of the building, screaming, and calling for help. Some were just covered in soot while others were burned. It was things like that, that had kept him up at night, and wouldn't let him sleep. But it was how those people had relied on him that gave him nightmares. He told them that Haven was a safe place, he made them believe that as long as they were there then nothing bad would happen to them. That was a lie because something bad did happen, and it was his fault. In his nightmares those victims would come to him, and ask why he didn't keep them safe. Why'd he allow their loved ones, or they themselves to die. Jim couldn't answer them because he didn't have an answer. But it didn't matter if he was asleep, or not because he couldn't get the picture of Haven burning to the ground out of his head. He hadn't since it happened. No matter how hard he tried, the flashes wouldn't go away, like they wouldn't now. They wouldn't go away that night either, not until Barbara had stopped by.

A tear ran down Jim's face, Harvey noticed. "Are you ok?" Harvey asked. Jim didn't bother to wipe away the tear, "I just wanted to forget", he quietly said to himself. "Jim", Harvey said carefully. Jim didn't answer, he didn't even look at him. It was almost like he'd forgotten Harvey was there. He just kept thinking about Haven.

"Jim", Harvey said again this time he almost shouted his name. Jim snapped out of it, "What?" He asked in confusion. "There you are, you were starting to scare me", Harvey said in concern. "Sorry", Jim said. He hadn't meant to blank out like that. He quickly wiped his face once he noticed the tear that had fallen down his cheek.

Harvey gave him a sympathetic look before he decided to change the subject, "So you gonna be in this kid's life?" He asked. Jim nodded, "It's my baby as well. I have a right to be there", he answered. He'd always wanted to be a father, and have a family. He was just sure it'd be with Lee but now that wasn't going to happen. At least not with her. But that still didn't change the fact that he was still going to be a father. So, because of that reason alone he was gonna be there. He was gonna take care of his kid no matter who the mother was because that was just the responsible thing to do.

"I'm glad to hear you say that. I'm just sorry you're gonna have to co-parent with Barbara. After all the things that she's done over the years I'm not sure how you're gonna do it", Harvey said.

"I'll find a way", Jim said. "You sound so sure", Harvey said. "I mean it won't be an easy task but I'll manage", Jim told him with a shrug.

"But Jim, this is Barbara that we're talking about. Not some random woman who you met a bar, and had a one stand with. But Barbara, remember how she tried to kill both you, and Lee? I believe she tried to kill Lee twice", Harvey said.

"Yes, Harvey I remember", Jim said slightly annoyed. "Well then why would you sleep with her in the first place? I get you wanted a distraction but there are other ways to distract yourself. You could have come to me. I wouldn't have been much help but I would have listened if that's all you needed. You didn't have to turn to Barbara for comfort. I mean what's the matter with you? Do you still have feelings for her, or something?" Harvey asked. "I-", Jim said as he searched for the right words. Harvey's eyes widened, "You do", he accused as he pointed his finger at him. Now it was Jim's eyes that got wide. "What? No", Jim said.

"Yes you do, or else you wouldn't have hesitated when I asked you. Man I knew it, I knew you still felt something for her. I saw it when you used your last bullet to stop that gang member from killing her. At first I thought I was just making a big deal out of nothing but now I know, you still feel something for her", Harvey said. He wasn't sure if Jim was still in love with Barbara, or if he still strongly cared about her. But one thing was certain; Jim still felt something towards his, first, ex fiance.

Jim narrowed his eyes, "Harvey, trust me, I don't feel anything towards Barbara", he said to him. "Sure you don't", Harvey said with sarcasm. "I don't", Jim protested.

"Whatever Jim, I know what I saw", Harvey said. "You didn't see anything because I don't feel anything towards her", Jim said in frustration. Harvey smirked, "Why do you sound angry then?" He asked. Jim tried his best not to yell, "I'm not angry, I'm frustrated, and if I was angry that's only logical because you're accusing me of feeling something I don't", he said as he gritted his teeth.

Harvey took a step towards him, "Come on man, you two were engaged at one point", he reminded him. "Yeah but we broke up. No-wait, scratch that. She left me, and I decided to move on", Jim said. "But you loved her though, and feelings like that don't disappear. Can you honestly tell me that if she hadn't killed her parents, hadn't tried to kill Lee, or later hadn't tried to kill you that you wouldn't have thought about giving her a second chance?" Harvey asked. Jim slowly shook his head, "I can't answer that for certain because that's not how things played out Harvey", he said. "Yeah but what if though?" Harvey asked. Jim gave him a frustrated look, "What if nothing", he said as he hopped off his desk.

"I'm not saying you still love her I'm just saying you might still have some feelings towards her. Trust me Jim I don't wanna be right about this but I know what I saw, and I after all these years of being your partner I know you too. I think there's something there, and you need to deal with it before she pops out that baby", Harvey explained. He really would love to be wrong but he doesn't think he is, and the way Jim had been acting towards Barbara those past few weeks only confirmed his suspicion that he still cared about her. But it's not like he wanted his friend back with a woman who was now a criminal. He only wanted him to be aware, and careful so that he didn't get hurt, or worse.

"Harvey I know you're just trying to help, and I know that you're just trying to look after me. I really appreciate it too. But my feelings for Barbara died a long time ago. What happened was a mistake, one I'd like to forget but that's not possible now", Jim said before his mind drifted to the baby.

"Well only you know how you feel, man. I just don't see how you could feel anything towards her after everything she's done but that's for you to deal with not me", Harvey said as he turned around. Jim growled, "Harvey for the last time I don't still have feelings for her", he angrily said. "Whatever", Harvey said while he waved his hand in a goodbye gesture before he walked out the door thus ending their conversation.

Jim could only look at the door after Harvey left before he walked over to the window, and sat down on the sill. He leaned his forehead against the glass. Harvey was wrong, he didn't still love Barbara, did he? Jim quickly shook his head at the thought. No, she was a criminal for pete sake's. A criminal who had robbed, hurt, and killed people. Yet she was a criminal who at one point he'd been ready to marry, who he was now expecting a baby with. A criminal who knew him better than he knew himself. A criminal who had brought him comfort when he'd been at his lowest. A criminal who'd saved his life when he'd been surrounded by those gangs that'd been out for his blood. A criminal who he'd saved, twice. Once when he'd stopped Oswald from shooting her, and the second time when he'd sacrificed his last bullet for her when that guy was gonna kill her. He'd done those things because he didn't want her to die. He didn't want that because he couldn't imagine life without her. In fact, he didn't want a life without her in it because he did love her.

Jim could feel tears in his eyes as the realization hit him. It was so simple yet so huge at the same time. He still loved her.

A small smile formed on his face. He still loved Barbara just like Harvey said, just like he'd noticed. Jim chuckled a little at the thought. Harvey had noticed something important about Jim before he had.

He loved her. After all these years despite everything that she'd done to him, to Lee, to a lot of people, he still loved her. But what was he gonna do about it? What was there to do? He supposed he could keep it to himself, or he could do something else. Something that could possibly change his life, and hers for the better.

Jim got off the window sill, and quickly headed out of his office. He ran past several cops as he raced to the door. He saw Harvey talking to another cop. "Harvey I gotta go, hold down the front while I'm gone", Jim said as he ran past him. Harvey looked at him as he ran away, "Okay", he called out to him in confusion but it was obvious his comment wasn't heard.

Jim continued to make his way towards the door when he saw Lee, he went to make a quick stop at her. "Jim", she said in confusion when he'd stopped at her. She looked at him, there was sweat on his forehead, and he was out of breath. "Lee, I'm sorry", he said to her in one breath. "What?" She asked. "I'm sorry for everything that I've put you through, you didn't deserve any of it, and I just want you to know that I didn't ever wanna hurt you. I mean it", he said despite still being out of breath. Lee looked at him, "Jim are you ok?" She asked worried that something was wrong. A smile formed on his face. "Yeah but I'll be even better real soon, goodbye Lee", he said then he ran towards the door. Lee watched him go.

At the Sirens, Barbara stood at the counter. The club was empty, nobody except for herself along with a few of her guards, who were nowhere to be seen, was there. She heard footsteps behind her as she fiddled with one of the glasses that was on the counter. "We're closed", she said in annoyance without looking to see who it was. "Barbara", she heard a familiar voice say. She turned around, and saw Jim standing near the entrance. He must have ran there because she noticed that he was breathing heavily.

Barbara gave him a look of contempt, "Get out", she angrily said. Jim didn't listen, "I need to talk to you", he said as he walked towards her. "I said get out", she said in the same tone as before.

"I can't do that", he said when he'd got up to her. Barbara took a step back, "Jim, I'm warning you", she said. "Barbara, please, I have to tell you something", Jim said in desperation.

"I don't wanna hear anything you have to say", she said. "I love you", Jim said quickly before she could say anything else. Barbara scoffed at his comment, "Really?" She asked as she folded her arms. Jim nodded, "Yeah", he said in disbelief because even he could hardly believe it.

Barbara looked at him, "What brought this on?" She asked. Jim chuckled as he put his hands on her cheeks, "Honestly, the only thing it took was for me to realize how I didn't want a life without you in it. Barbara, you are the first woman that I fell in love with, and if things had played out differently then we'd still be together. But despite the fact that we did break up you've still been present in my life. No matter what I can't seem to shake you, and I realize now that I don't want to. I don't want to be without you", he told her.

Barbara jerked away from him, "You're lying", she accused. Jim took a step towards her, "No, I'm not", he said. "Yes you are. You just want me to put my guard down so that you take my baby", she said as she placed her hands on her stomach.

"Barbara I'm telling you this because I want to be with you", he said. Barbara looked at him in disbelief, "How can you expect me to believe that when not that long ago you couldn't stand the sight of me?" She asked. "I don't, and I understand if you don't. But I meant everything I said before about how I don't want to be without you", he said.

Barbara stared at him for a while as she thought about everything he'd said. He sounded believable. Like he meant every word he said. But she couldn't be sure that even he believed what he was saying. He could just be saying this because she was pregnant, that maybe he was confusing wanting to do the right thing with wanting to be with her, and she wasn't gonna have that. She wasn't gonna fall back in his arms only for him to wake up one day, and realize he'd made a mistake. She didn't think she could take it if that happened.

"I don't believe you", she finally said. "Barbara please", he said. "No Jim, as much as I want to believe you I can't", she said as she felt a lump form in her throat.

"You're just gonna have to trust me", Jim said. Barbara felt her jaw drop when he said that. As if it were so easy. "Trust? How can I? How can I be so sure that you won't break my heart later on? How can you know that you're not just saying any of this because I'm pregnant?" She asked. "I'm not though. Trust me Barbara I've always felt this way. It may have taken me a few years to realize it but my feelings for you never changed. I think the only reason that I wouldn't admit it before was because I was being too prideful. But I'm putting that aside right here, and now. Barbara, I, love, you, and I wanna be with you ", he said.

There was a long pause as the two stared at each other. She thought about everything he'd said as the words continued to sink in. "So, you really wanna be with me?" She asked him. Jim nodded, "Yes", he simply said.

Barbara looked in his eyes, and finally saw that he was being sincere. He really did still love her. She sniffed as tears filled her eyes.

"I'm not that same woman that you were engaged to all those years ago", she said as she wiped her eyes with her hand. She felt like she had to remind him of that. Not that she thought he'd forgotten but because he needed to realize what he was getting himself into. Even though she wanted to be with him, the fear of him maybe realizing that he'd made a mistake then him possibly leaving was still present.

Jim placed his hands on her shoulders, "I know, and to be fair I'm not that same man. We've both changed but that's ok because how we feel about each other hasn't. I know we have a lot to work on especially now with our baby on the way. But I know we can do it", he said.

More tears formed in Barbara's eyes. "Even though you don't exactly like my line of work?" She asked as her voice broke. A look of seriousness appeared on Jim's face. "That's just the thing Barbara I know you can change. I know a part of you doesn't like the woman that you've become. I know that you only became this way to spite me, and I'm sorry that you felt like you had to do that. If I could go back, and change a lot of things I would. But I can't. However I know that our future can be different, we can learn from our past. We can change together", he said as tears formed in his own eyes.

Tears ran down her face as she listened to everything he said. He was right, she didn't want to be this way anymore, for herself, or for her baby. No, not her baby, their baby.

"I want to do that too", she said after a while. Jim let out a sigh of relief, "Good", he said as tears ran down his cheeks. But they weren't tears of sadness but joy, something he hadn't felt in a long time it seemed like.

Barbara put her arms around his neck as she smiled at him. Jim looked in her eyes, and saw that she was still crying. So, he took his thumb, and wiped away some of her tears. As he looked at her face he couldn't help but think that her tears looked like diamonds.

"Are you gonna stop staring long enough to kiss me?" She asked with a smirk. Jim didn't say anything instead he did exactly what she wanted, and kissed her. Jim pulled back, "I love you", he said as they smiled at each other. "I love you too", she said before she kissed him back. As they kissed Jim couldn't but feel like everything was right in his world again. For so long he'd been unhappy but not anymore. Now that he was back with the woman he loved he was happy. He'd have to remind himself to thank Harvey, when he goes back to the GCPD later, for helping him realize this simple realization.

The End

A/N- Well what did you think? Did you like it? Are you glad they got back together? I would've loved it if they had gotten back together on the show because I do think he did still love her. But they didn't. Anyways you can tell me your thoughts in the reviews, and thank you for reading.
