Author's Note: Little details I want to put out there. While yes it is a little out of character for Blu to shove Jewel into a wall, he did just abruptly find out she was pregnant. As for Rafael being the one to save Blu from the harpy eagle, in the wild, toco toucans are naturally aggressive and I found it to be a nice foil for his personality.Other than that, once again thank you all for reading and hopefully you all enjoy this chapter!
The day started to fade ever so slightly as the sun began to set in the west. The absence of it's luminous light sprung forth orange hues throughout the sky. It was once again evening in Rio. The sunset marked the end of yet another busy day for both the humans and wildlife that frequent the majestic city. The sun not only provides a beautiful source of light, but also energy for plants. Some of those plants use that energy to make nutrients and in some cases, fruit.
While Jewel has a certain hate for humans, there was no denying that they and birds have their similarities. Birds act on instinct - as do humans. Humans, in their own world, possess certain monetary needs, foiling the birds' need for food and freedom. Money puts bread on the table for human beings. In the wild, the bread needs to be found.
Blu lay in a man-made nest, unconscious. He was lucky to escape the clutches of death without seriously fatal injuries. Serious. He had cuts across his back, which caused him to leak an incalculable amount of blood. His wings seemed to present a form of nerve damage, rendering him flightless. He was lucky to be alive at all. Today marked Blu's first true brush with nature. He was no longer the one watching Animal Planet, or relying on the safety of a magical forcefield known as "glass." Today, he was part of the food chain.
Jewel stood in the nest, her gaze not fixed on anything but the breathing body of her Blu. She couldn't leave him alone, with the humans anyway. While they were the ones that fixed up her wing, and the ones that now safeguard her and Blu's livelihood, she was still apprehensive to leave her mate alone. He had fresh, clean bandages wrapped throughout his body. The damage done to his wings would heal, though it would take time. Less than what Jewel had to go through but still, time.
Suddenly, small pieces of motion caught Jewel's eyes as Blu's unconscious body began to twitch. His eyelids tightened and his facial muscles shivered. It felt as if something pulled him as he got up from the nest, abruptly, his eyes opened. The hazelnuts were still there, though the irises were still somewhat grayish. "What... what happened? Where am I?" The young macaw panted, his lungs absorbing the cold air the aviary radiated.
Jewel quickly placed a wing on Blu's back and another on his chest. Her mate was still wounded and she had no intention of allowing him to injure himself further. She gently laid him back down into the nest with her wings, not wanting to reopen the wounds on his back. "It's okay, sweetie. You're safe. We're in the aviary." She soothed.
Blu's memory slowly began to re-enter his mind. The harpy attack, Rafael coming in to save him, and... Jewel. Blu's eyes widened as he realized who was standing before him. He tried to get up one last time before Jewel laid him back down, this time keeping a wing on his chest. "What... what happened to the eagle? Is Rafi okay?" Blu inquired in a faint voice.
"Rafael's fine, Blu. Some military macaws came by and helped him with the eagle." She explained, sweetly. She chose to leave out the part where the macaws elected to execute the harpy, knowing Blu didn't need that on his conscience. He was a very meek lad after all.
Blu couldn't help but feel an immeasurable amount of guilt on his wings. He got himself here. He risked the possibility of his best friend getting eaten alive by a harpy. He endangered his entire species by storming off and allowing a lone harpy to grab a hold of him. Though those weren't what truly scarred him. "Jewel, I'm sorry for all this. I shouldn't have run off. You risked your life to come find me. And the lives of our..." The guilt in his bluster was too obvious to conceal. His light bickering was quickly cut off.
"Stop apologizing. Hush now." Jewel demanded, her voice tensing up all of a sudden. One second, she was a gentle girlfriend making sure her bird was okay. Now, she shifted into what resembled an annoyed mother after her children broke a window. Jewel slowly turned around and walked away from Blu, though not flying off the small cubby area the nest was housed in. She stood by the ledge, eyes closed - her heart began to race and she quickly placed a wing over her chest. She still felt threatened by Blu, despite his nerdy exterior. Just one wrong word could easily trigger another uncontrolled response from him - she couldn't fathom the emotions Blu could possibly be keeping locked up. All this time, she thought he was ready to have children with her. The hugging, the kissing, the loving, and the marriage proposal. "Did the past few weeks mean anything to him?" The painful thought stabbed her dead center in her mind.
Blu groaned in his nest, his breath becoming increasingly heavy. Though he began to hear despair in the form of sobbing. He carefully hoisted his head up from the nest in the direction he heard the sobbing from. His heart melted as his eyes caught the sight of his sad mate. "Jewel." He called out, though it fell on deaf ears. He knew his words meant nothing, most of the time. His actions are what got him places. His actions are what got him here. He jumped after her, proving how he truly felt about her. He kept her warm all those nights to lock in his love for her. He proposed to her in an attempt to get the chance to solidify that love with matrimony.
"This'll be counterintuitive." Blu said to himself. He felt as if he had regained his ability to feel and move his wings all of a sudden. The harpy clamped him pretty good but for some reason, he could feel again. He instinctively crawled out of the nest and started limping over to Jewel, whom had no idea he even stood up.
Tears continued to leak from Jewel's eyelids. Though she felt as if something or someone was watching her. Perhaps her senses were sharper than she originally conceived. She sniffed up some air and wiped some tears from her eyelids before turning around. Her eyes widened at what she saw next. "Blu! What are you doing?!" She quickly made her way to her limping mate. She stood in front of him and held onto him, getting him to sit on the deck of the cubby.
It took the domesticated bird more energy than he thought but he made it to her. He laid against her for a few seconds before placing his right wing over Jewel's belly. The belly of his mate felt very, very different now. He gently laid his cheek against her belly, before rubbing against it. She was pregnant with his children. "I'm... I'm sorry. I'm... so sorry." He spoke, the sincerity of his voice unmistakeable. He continued to rub his mate's belly.
Jewel was surprised, immensely, but her heart cried for an indication of Blu's acceptance. She continued to hold her Blu close, feeling his presence on her stomach. She knew in her heart Blu meant every word. Not only did he apologize to her, but he apologized to them. He accepted the fact that he was now going to become a father. He'd have many more responsibilities in the coming days with taking care of her, but for now, she had to be the one watching him. "Blu, you're going to be a great dad. I mean it." She truly meant that.
"I promise I'll take care of each and every last one of you. On my honor as Tyler Blu Gunderson." He spoke to Jewel's tummy, hoping his eggs could hear him. This made Jewel giggle slightly, easing up the atmosphere a bit.
"Blu, we'll take care of them, together." Jewel confirmed. She was touched by his sentiment and she kissed him on his forehead. Blu quickly jolted up from his posture and looked into her eyes, realizing something he had overlooked.
"Wait, Jewel. Did... did you tell anyone else about...you know." He inquired.
"No, no. Not yet." She confirmed. "I think that's something we need to do together."
"Well, that's reassuring." For the first time in hours, Blu was now free to smile. A smile formed on his gray beak as he stared into Jewel's eyes. She sent out a smile of her own before touching his beak with her own.
"Come on. Let's get you back inside that nest. You need some rest, mister." She declared before getting the two of them up. Blu limped to the nest, his Jewel holding him by his back and chest so he doesn't fall.
"But I'm not tired." Blu joked. Jewel didn't buy it as such and gently laid him back down in the nest.
"Yes you are." She kept a wing on his face, rubbing it softly.
The soft, tender touch of his mate made Blu blush madly - the feathers on his head began to spike up. There was no feeling on God's green Earth that could describe the immense amount of lightness the male macaw felt. He was going to sleep tonight knowing that he took responsibility for his life. With a deep breath, Blu finally closed his hazelnut eyes.
Jewel smiled at the sight of her sleeping love hawk. He was at peace now. Certainly more preferred than the thought of him getting chased and beaten by a predatory bird. Maybe she could've given the news at a better time. Maybe she could've said it differently. Regardless, the past was the past. What mattered now was their children, their present. She placed a wing over her belly once again. No pain radiated from it just yet so she deduced that the eggs were still fine.
"That's your daddy for you." She spoke to her unborn children. "Smart, quirky, but adorable. You'll get used to him." She, like her mate, laid down in the nest and got ready to go to sleep.
Their little aviary nest was in plain view of a window. The outside world revealed darkness approaching. The sky began to turn a midnight blue as the thousands of stars began shining, one by one. It was now night time in Rio de Janeiro. Jewel looked at the window from the nest and suddenly saw a high speed light move across her horizon. It wasn't a bird, nor was it a plane. Neither were fast enough. It was a shooting star. It was in and out of the female's view in an instant. Birds and humans were very different, biologically speaking. Though their behaviour is quite similar. Like the humans she thought she'd never trust or chose to interact with, she believed in wishes and hope.
"Mommy, daddy. I wish you were here." Jewel wished, her heart beat accelerating at the thought of her parents. She looked over at her sleeping mate before turning back to the stars. There used to be thousands of their kind, flying freely in the jungle. Sadly, it was just the two of them now. For now at least. She wanted to tell Blu everything about her family, her life before Rio. But she couldn't bear to remember any of it. Stress and pregnancy did not mix well together and Jewel elected to stop thinking about the past. She continued to lay on the soft, artificial nest - her body was facing Blu's. The peaceful slumber he was in only filled her with joy, canceling out the negativity that plagued her mind seconds ago. "Goodnight, Blu. I love you with all my heart." She closed her eyes and gave him a quick kiss on the beak, wrapping a wing around his neck.
Unsurprisingly, this woke the male up and he opened his eyes to see what was happening. The sweet breath of his mate intoxicated his own as he closed his eyes again, pulling her into the kiss with his wings. They kissed for a good minute before Blu broke away to breath. "I love you, Jewel. Goodnight." He turned his head and faced Jewel's belly, rubbing a wing over it. "Goodnight, kids." Despite his injuries and the bandages that covered his back, wings, and chest, Blu held his mate and unborn children close. While the bandages covered a large majority of him, his love still radiated true.
