This story starts two years after Mike becomes City Councilman. Six months in Mike's first term, the city decided to not bulldoze the street the Bradys moved from so Mike had his home back in the original location. Wally found himself a job and has moved his family into a nice home nearby, thanks to Carol.

At the start of 92, the ages are as follows: Carol 60, Jan 33, Alice 65, Nora 40, Tracy 31, Mickey 9, Wally 40, Cindy 30, Jessica 10, Marcia 36, Greg 37, Kevin 11, Mike 59, Patty 9, Peter 34, Bobby 32, Philip 43

This show and the characters in the show do not belong to me.

I decided to write my first Brady Bunch story and wanted to do one on Sam and Alice.

Friday, January 10th 1992 12pm—

At the Franklin home-

Greg took Sam and Alice home from the hospital where Sam had finished his chemotherapy treatment. Greg stayed for lunch while Sam went to lay down on the couch as the chemo had tired him out.

"Sam and I really appreciate you and the family for helping us out," Alice said, taking a bite of her sandwich.

Greg smiled. "You're welcome Alice, after all you and Sam are family."

"I just wish I could get Sam to sell his butcher shop but he doesn't want to do that." Alice said. "it's been hard to keep the shop going since he's been having health issues."

Greg sighed then sat back in his chair. "I'm sure its been hard on you both. Hopefully, Sam will decide to sell. If he does, and the place needs to be fixed up, I know some people who can help."

"Thank you," Alice said. Greg offered to do the dishes, before he went home.

Wednesday, February 19th at 11am—

At Brady and Associates architectural firm-

Lani Griffith worked on some sketches when Jan walked in.

"Are you getting something built or remodeled?" Jan asked, glancing at Lani's work on the sketching table.

"A remodel. Mr. Franklin is selling his butcher shop and the buyer wanted to know what the price would be after a remodel."

Jan froze. "Mr. Franklin? Sam Franklin?"

Lani nodded. "yes, you know him?"

"Yes. I've known him a long time. He married our housekeeper, Alice."

They walked from the sketching table to Lani's desk, "I think it would be better for the guy to just buy the shop then he can decide what he wants to do with the empty space. I just don't understand what he is thinking."

"Its about time Sam sold it," Jan said. "He retired two years ago but returned to work because he and Alice were driving each other up the wall. But now he has cancer and is on chemo. Its been really hard on everyone." Jan looked at Lani's drawing, "What is the new owner planning to do with the store?"

Lani smiled. "It will be a shoe store."

"Let me know how it goes," Jan said. When she was gone, Lani closed the door and continued with her work at her desk.

In Mike's office at City Hall—

Mike hung up the phone as Sam walked in and closed the door.

"Hi Sam. what can I do for you?" Mike asked. Sam's visit surprised him, but he tried to hide the concern on his face. Still, the visit gave him a funny feeling.

"Hi Mr. Brady, I—I need to talk to you about something," Sam sat in the chair directly in front of Mike's desk and sighed.

Mike sat down at his desk and crossed his fingers together, "I just got off the phone with Alice about the meeting at our place tonight."

"It's an announcement we are planning on making tonight, but…" Sam seemed nervous.

"What is it?"

"Can you loan me $30,000?"

Mike sat forward, "$30,000!?"

"Yes, and don't tell Alice or Mrs. Brady."

Mike sat back and sighed, "I know the medical bills have made things hard for you both. Is this regarding your butcher shop? What's going on Sam?"

"The seller wants me to renovate first then he said he would buy it from me when it's all finished."

"That is an awful lot of money for a renovation, Sam. I need to think about it."

"They want to make it into a shoe store which means that there's a lot of work to be done." Sam explained.

"Sam, what happens if Carol finds out? What am I supposed to tell her? She's going to be furious that I didn't talk to her first. Is there a reason you can't discuss this with Alice?"

Mike tilted his head slightly.

"Does she have to know? Alice is worried about my health as it is, and I don't want to add to her anxiety."

"But how will you explain the extra thirty thousand dollars in your bank?"

"I'll just say a friend gave me the money," Sam explained. "And anyway, Alice won't know because this is a separate account, I opened without her knowing."

Mike felt very uncomfortable and he knew that it showed.

"Why did you open your own bank account? Sam, what is going on?" Mike demanded.

Sam was near tears and it was a long time before he spoke. "I told Alice we were doing okay financially, but when she found out about our rent is a month past due, she refused to ask for help with it. She thinks we can handle it on our own but the truth is that we are in the red, Mr. Brady.

"I'll tell you what, Sam. Get all of your bills together and I will help you with those. And in the meantime, I'll think about the loan." Mike stood and walked to the door and Sam followed. "I'll call you tomorrow when my meeting is over." He opened the door and shook Sam's hand.

"Thanks, Mr. Brady, see you tonight."

When Sam was gone, Mike closed the door. With a sigh he crossed the office and sat down at his desk. After he collected himself, he made a call regarding the cost of the renovation. He was relieved to find that it was going to be a lot less than what Sam has suggested. But he realized the medical bills were piling up and he decided that it was best not to tell Carol about it. No sense in worrying her.

At the Brady home 5pm—

All the kids had assembled and were curious about the reason for the meeting. When Sam and Alice arrived, they all sat down at the table.

"Whatever it was, we didn't do it!" Mickey said, causing everyone to laugh.

"We know you didn't do anything," Alice said. But even after the laughter died down, everyone knew that bad news was coming.

Sam licked his lips then began slowly. "The chemo treatment that I have been taking the last few weeks hasn't been working on getting rid of the cancer and I…uh…" Alice held his hand and looked at him in sadness. "I'm going to stop the chemo and sell my shop as soon as I get the renovation done.

Everyone gasped.

"What kind of renovation do you need done, Sam?" Peter asked.

"They want the empty space beside the shop to be included in the asking price," Sam explained.

"It would definitely increase the selling price," Carol said quietly.

"Why can't they just let you sell it and do their own renovation?" Cindy asked then continued, "It just seems stupid."

"I don't know," Sam said as he shrugged.

"How much would it cost to do the renovation?" Greg asked.

"Not much," Sam said, even though he knew that he and Mike had discussed a fairly high price earlier in the day at his office.

"Speaking of the shop, when the renovation is over, you shouldn't get a bill from my company. The buyer should be the one who pays the architect." Jan explained. "I heard there is an issue about that. It's your shop and it's not fair. So, if you get a bill, let me know and I'll take care of it."

She wondered if Greg would want to help with the cost of the renovations since he had asked about it. But she felt Sam wasn't being very truthful about the cost.

"Sure, we can do that," Alice said.

"It's going to be hard to just sit and do nothing," Bobby said sadly.

"I know," Sam said.

The rest of the evening was spent talking about various things before they said goodnight and went to their homes.
