Chapter 1: A New Journey

*(At Troit High)*

"Come on, please?" Jake Starr begged, while tears formed in his eyes. "I really don't want to be rejected AGAIN, Jessica. PLEASE go out with me!"

"No!" Jessica Brenner yelled angrily. "I'm not going to date an ugly nerd like you. I will only date the cute contest stars, so just forget it!"

Jake ran away, out of the school with tears in his eyes. This was the third time that he got rejected by a girl in the last year. Jake kept running until he smashed into a fence that blocks the school from the forest. One of his friends, Andy Moore came running up to him.

"Are you okay?!" Andy asked, then he added, "and why were you running?"

"I'm running away from Jessica. She broke my heart!" Jake said as he sobbed. "I'm never going to get a girlfriend."

Andy walked to his friend to pat his back. "You don't know that. Your luck could change. And besides, you know that it isn't safe in that forest without a Pokémon."

Jake resumed his dash and climbed over the fence. He then ran straight into the dangerous Wamp forest, crying all the way.

*(Ash's POV)*

I heard the phone ring, and I had a good feeling that I knew who was calling me without even looking at the caller ID. It turns out that I was right. It was my best friend ever and student, May Maple. We had been planning to go to a new region and travel together once again.

"Hi, May!" I said into the phone.

"Hi, Ash! I found a great new region for us to travel to. I think that this will be a great idea because neither of us have been here."

"That's great! What's it called?" I asked .

"It is the Migan region. They have Pokémon gyms AND contests for us to participate in." She explained.

"I'm so excited, May! Great job with finding this awesome region!"

"Thanks, Ash. I'm flattered that you like it so much." She said back to me.

"Is there anything important about this region that I should know about?" I wondered aloud.

"Yes, Ash. To start, all trainers who don't own one of the region's starters are given one between Grookey, Torchic, and Froakie upon arrival. If you already own one, which we both do, then you are highly encouraged to bring them with you everywhere."

"Wow, these are three of my favorite starters!" I exclaimed, "but wait, why doesn't the Migan region have their own starters?"

"Oh, nearly every Pokémon in this region migrated from somewhere else, so they just use the migrated Pokémon as starters." She explained.

"Ok. So, do you want to take a plane tomorrow?" I ask.

"Sure, but remember that you will need to take your own plane to Hoenn first so that we can meet up and take the Migan plane together."

"I'll remember," I say, "see you soon!"

"See ya!"

*(The Next Day)*

"Hey, Pikachu? Are you excited to see May in person again?" I asked my buddy. He always goes everywhere with me. He is my best Pokémon friend, after all.

"Pika Pi! (I sure am!)" Pikachu responded. Even though he speaks a different language than me, I can still understand what he says. I've even taught May how to understand Pikachu.

"Come on, Pikachu! She has to be waiting for us near the Migan plane. We shouldn't leave her hanging."

We hurried to the loading dock for the Migan region. When I got there, I saw May, sitting alone with her Blaziken.

"May!" I yelled to get her attention. I saw her look at me and immediately get a huge smile. We ran towards each other. When we were about to have a friendly hug, Pikachu ran past me and climbed up May's arm to sit on her shoulder. I noticed that her cheeks got a little pink from embarrassment when this happened.

"Hey, Ash! Long time no see!" May said to me. It really made me happy to see her once again.

"Yeah, May. It's been awhile" I said. Pikachu was still sitting on her shoulder, cuddling with her, and for some unknown reason, it made me feel a little bit jealous.

"Are you ready to travel again?" She asked me. "The plane is about to begin boarding."

"Yeah, May! I'm so excited!"

"So am I!" She exclaimed, "do you have Greninja with you?"

"Yep! And you have Blaziken too, right?"

"Yeah, and he's really happy to see you again, too!"

"Cool, May!"

*(neutral POV)*

The flight lasts for 6 hours, then Ash and May finally land at the Troit airport

"We're finally here! I can't wait to see all kinds of Pokémon!" Ash exclaimed.

"Me too, Ash. We should go and tell the professor that we've arrived."

"Good idea, May!" Ash said, "wait, who is he?"

"They call him Professor Lumbert"

"Okay, let's get a move on!" Ash exclaims as he runs to the center of town, towards where he thinks is the location of the lab.

"Wait up, Ash!"

Jake has continued to run through Wamp forest for over ten minutes straight. He finally grew too tired to keep running and sat against a tree. Suddenly, a Pokémon snuck up behind Jake and scared him.

" Aaahhhh!" He screamed. The Pokémon was round and red with black spots over it. It's back unfolded to show two wings to help it fly. It looked like a bug Pokémon.

Jake ran away from it behind another tree, and the Pokémon followed. "G-get away f-from m-m-me, Ledyba!" The Pokémon was indeed a Ledyba. The Ledyba continued to fly closer to Jake. Just as Ledyba was about to use string shot to trap Jake, a man came running his way.

"Jake Starr!" The man yelled, "just what were you thinking when you just left the school and ran into the forest without a Pokémon?"

"I'm so sorry! Can you please help me first?" Jake begged

"Okay," He answered, "go, Grookey!" The man tossed a red and white ball into the air, and when it landed on the ground, it flashed with a bright light. A green and brown monkey Pokémon came out holding a tree branch in its hand.

"Grook, grookey!" it exclaimed, saying that it was ready for battle.

"Okay grookey, use tackle!" Grookey obeyed, and struck Ledyba with it's body. Ledyba got knocked back hard, but got back up. Ledyba began to charge up a tackle attack of its own. It charged at Rowlet.

"Grookey , dodge! Then, use another tackle to finish it!" Rowlet flew away from the tackle and struck Ledyba with another tackle attack. The Ledyba fell to the ground, with swirls in its eyes. Grookey won the battle.

"Thank you so much, Professor Lumbert!" Jake exclaimed happily.

"It was my pleasure, just don't run into the woods without a Pokémon ever again." Lumbert replied.

"Sorry, my bad"

"There may be a way to fix this problem for the future, however"

"What do you mean?"

Ash travels around the city, searching for the professor's lab. After a few hours of searching, he decides to ask for help. He sees a lady standing a few feet away and goes up to her.

"Excuse me, miss," he asks, "do you mind telling me where professor Lumbert's lab is"

The lady replied by saying, "oh, you must be new here. The professor in this region doesn't have a lab. He is the principal of the high school, and he studies Pokémon as a hobby. Also, I heard that he isn't at the school right now. He's searching for a student who ran off into Wamp forest."

"All right, thanks!" Ash replied. Suddenly, he saw May running up to him.

"Where have you been?!" She yelled

"Oh, sorry May," he rubbed the back of his head sheepishly and finished, "that lady told us that professor Lumbert is in a forest right now, so let's head there."

"Okay, Ash. Lead the way."

The duo walked all the way to the forest, and tried to search for the professor. About twenty minutes later, they find him, along with a teenage boy.

"All right, Jake. You can pick one of these three Pokémon to keep as your own," he said, "do you want the grass monkey Pokémon: Grookey, the water frog Pokémon: Froakie, or the fire chick Pokémon: Torchic?"

"Wow!" came a voice, causing Lumbert and Jake to jump, "oh, sorry to scare you guys. My name is Ash, and this is my buddy, Pikachu." He said, referring to the electric mouse on his shoulder.

"And my name is May," She chimed in.

"It's nice to meet you two" Jake replied.

"So, who is it going to be?" Ash asked.

Jake said, "I think that I'm going to choose..."
