''Honey, I'm home~'' she singsong-ed loudly, noticing the pair of shoes on the carpet as she entered the flat. The girl threw her backpack and her converse in a corner and headed toward her living room.

''Shut it. '' A voice grumbled. '' I'm about to beat this boss. ''

''What?! THE boss we've been trying to defeat for the passed three weeks?!'' She exclaimed as she jumped on the couch next to her best friend.

''Yeah, so let me concentrate. '' He growled again as he quickly glanced her way.

The 16 years old chuckled and watched the TV for a while before pulling out her phone and scrolling through her social media apps. Haru pushed back her dark blond hair that had escaped from under her cap and suddenly shouted when Kentaro was finally able to beat the boss.

He raised a fist in the air and let out a victory cry and they high-fived with both hands: ''Did you see this!? ''

The girl sprung to her feet on the sofa: '' I did! You slay man! ''

He roared in triumph again and grabbed her neck to capture her in a headlock: '' Who's the best now?! I told you I would be the one to beat this monster! ''

Rapidly, Haru put a leg behind both of his and turned her body, making the boy fall on his back. Surprised, he let go and she sat on his hips: '' Pfft! Only this time! Last level, it was me who's beaten the boss! ''

Kentaro lightly hit her side and as she bent, he reversed their position: ''Ah! The last one was a lot easier! That's why! ''

The teenager powerfully kneed his backside and pulled him over her head. He landed on his back with a 'oof'. She crouched near his head and looked down at her friend with a smirk: '' I'm still the best fighter, though, Taro~''

''Tch. Only because I don't hurt girls.'' He explained as he got up.

His dark stare clashed with her gray eyes and a moment passed before they both started to snicker. Ah Kentaro Kyotani… He was quite the character; he had one hell of a reputation. A bad boy, a delinquent, a nonchalant teen that seemed to care about nothing. Many were scared of him, others had a strange respect for him, but for Haru Igarashi, he was simply her best friend.

''Don't you have places to be instead of squatting my place? '' She nagged.

Haru knew he was a member of the volleyball team of Aobajohsai or something close enough to a member. She also knew for a fact that seijoh was training almost daily as they were one of the best teams out there.

Kentaro slightly turned away, avoiding her eyes: '' yeah…no. Not today and not for the next week... And it's not your place; your aunt's paying for it.''

That explained why he arrived at the apartment before her; she had practice after school as she was part of the track and field team of Shiratorizawa Academy. Shaking her head, the girl walked past him; what did he do this time to be excluded from practice? She questioned her friend about it as he followed her into the kitchen.

Kyoutani sat at the table and groaned: '' They're annoying; I want to punch half of them in the face. ''

The girl opened the fridge door and peek inside, trying to find something to make dinner.

''And the other half?''

'' They can't play for shit. ''

'' You're impossible; that's why they kick you out every now and then. '' She said bluntly.

He glared at her: ''Fuck you. '' he responded without any bite to it.

No wonder they had nick named him Mad Dog.

''I seriously feel bad for the poor girl that will be stuck with you as her soulmate. '' Haru teased.

Kentaro scoffed: '' You're one to talk; you're a total tomboy. You don't even dress like a girl.''

Igarashi looked at herself; she was wearing black legging that stopped just under her knees and the school purple skirt over it. Her pale, blue button up shirt had short sleeves and was currently half out of her skirt. To finalize her boyish appearance, she had on backward her navy-blue cap with a Deadpool logo on it. Furthermore, her hair was not very long. The blonde tresses didn't go pass her shoulders and were shorter at the back.

She pulled out her tongue at him: ''Shut your big mouth Mad Dog or I won't make any food for you. ''

''Don't be like that; you know my mom can't cook.'' Kyotani sighed.

Haru sighed with him; yes, she knew. His mother was a drunkard and it was a miracle that she still had her job. His father left her 6 years ago; she remembered that day. His mother never really recovered from being abandoned by her soulmate. Their place was a mess, she barely took care of Kentaro now. Yeah; both their lives sucked big deal sometimes. Her mom died when she was 8; her dad stayed for a while, but six months later, he left claiming that he, being a man, wasn't suited to take care of a child alone like this. He packed his bags and broken by the lost of his soulmate, he entrusted her to his younger sister that lived here, in the Miyagi prefecture. The man called and sent her cards for her birthday and Christmas and that was it. She saw him maybe once or twice a year and honestly, she preferred not to. Her father looked like and was still a broken man; it was a pitiful sight. And so, Haru stayed with her aunt. However, in the last two years, this one had barely been around. Kumi Igarashi was a strong yet easygoing woman, but she was presently working full time in Tokyo. She had received a promotion; an offer she couldn't say 'no' to. Haru had encouraged her to go; it was an opportunity she couldn't pass. Kumi had let her keep the apartment, paying for everything but her cellphone. She regularly sent her money for the grocery and other things and stopped by about every two months to make sure everything was alright.

Aaanddd all that pretty mess brought them here today, her and her best friend of the last 7 years. Healthy and mostly happy as long as they could do their shenanigans together. More than half the time, Kyotani was sleeping at the apartment with her. There was an unused bedroom here so… Not to mention the place was conveniently situated close enough to both their high schools, Seijoh and Shiratorizawa.

With a close-eyed smile, she turned to face him: ''You know I have to make more so I can have left-overs: the food is way to expensive at the cafeteria. ''

'' You only had to not go there! Fucking Shiratorizawa; they all have sticks up their asses! Fancy pricks… '' He almost shouted, grumbling the last part.

Kentaro was still bitter over the fact that she didn't choose the same high school he did. Haru rolled her eyes: ''You know why I had to transfer there; they have the best scholarships and if I graduate from that school, I'll have more chances to get in a better university…And they have the best sport teams.''

''I don't care about your track and field little friends, but the volleyball team; they're all pretentious fuckers.''

She nodded and started to grab veggies from the fridge: '' You know they're not my friends…And I agree; I hate most of them.'' She mumbled somberly.

Some of them had and were still, from time to time, when she wasn't around, bullying her only friend there. Kyotani was aware of this and the story behind her strong dislike of the volleyball players. She pushed some onions and a cutting board toward him: '' You're still protecting that weakling? '' He asked as he began to chop an onion.

''Don't call him that; he's my friend. My only friend there. Satoshi-kun is nice. '' She refuted gently.

The teen in front of her rolled his eyes: '' Still a weakling. You both started second year and I'm sure if you were not around, he would get his ass beaten by first years or somethin'. ''

Haru sighed: Satoshi Yamamoto was a kind soul. The slender teen was calm and gentle and could never hurt anyone. Still, it wasn't a good reason to get picked on, not in her book at least.

They finished cooking, chatting idly until it was ready. They ate together as they watched a tv-show. She thought for sure that tonight would be one of the nights he stayed over, however, just as they were about to be done with the dishes, Kyotani's phone vibrated.

''It's my mom…She's texting to know if I'm with you. '' He said, looking at his phone.

The girl nodded in understanding: they both knew what it meant.

'' If she's asking about me, she's sober. I should go. ''

Accompanying him at the door, she gently pushed his shoulder with her fist: ''Be safe on your way home. ''

He ruffled her hair: ''Yeah, yeah; don't miss me too much. ''

'' In your dreams, Mad Dog. Good night.''

'' 'night.''

Showered and ready to go to bed, Haru let herself fall on her mattress. What a day; she was rarely bored since she went to Shiratorizawa. The girl had to maintain good grades and excel on the track and field team; she was a sprinter. The teen always had excellent marks in school and so passing the entry exam to get into Shiratorizawa had not been too difficult. Maintaining them wasn't too bad either. But the life there was something else. Most of the kids there were from rich and pompous families and all the sport teams were quite intense in their training, eager to keep their title as a powerhouse.

So making friends in this school was quite hard for her and in fact, only Satoshi had befriended her and probably only because she had saved his butt. More than once. She also knew she wasn't the easiest or most friendly person to be around; she had a reputation just as bad as Kyotani…And being seen hanging out around him had never helped.

All the girls seemed to be talking about in Shiratorizawa was style, shopping and soulmates. What she considered to be the three 'S's of boredom.

Soulmates… She exhaled loudly and turned on her side; what a joke. Look what it did to her dad and Kentaro's mother…it had ruined them. It was annoyingly everywhere; in the news, they learned about it in school (there were classes dedicated to only that.), books…it controlled people's lives! Not even everyone were getting to meet their soulmates! Which reminded her that her 29 years old aunt Kumi had yet to met hers. Sure, Haru was curious about it to, sometimes. Like other girls, she whished that one day, she could meet her soulmate and live happily forever after, but deep down, she was aware that the chances were thin. The 16 years old was also a bit afraid; once you had physically touched your soulmate, it was over. After that, it would go downhill from there. Even the graze of a finger could suffice; it would bind two people together, for life. What mark or hurt one of the soulmates would receive, the other would get too. The closer they were in term of physical distance, the worst it would be. A light, bleeding scratch on one soulmate might not even leave a mark on the other if kilometers separated them…But that same scratch could make the other bleed too if they were standing side by side.

What if the couple was peacefully walking and a car would suddenly hit one of the soulmates? Well, the other would die too or suffer the same injuries.

Terrifying.

The girl shuddered at the thought. And to say people would gather in masses and shake hands to try to find their soulmates. Ridiculous. She was glad Kentaro and herself shared the same opinion on this; they both found it stupid. The pair had agreed that if they were not bound by the age of 27, they would be together. They had been so sad when they were kids to recognize that they were not soulmates.

Oh well. What could you do?

And not only that, after finding your soulmate, you couldn't stay separated or far for too long. According to the studies, it was a dual thing. One could not achieve their greatest potential or reach their highest limits without being bound. Be it physical or mental potential. On the other hand, once you were bound you had to frequently be near your other half. People reported feeling sick, weak or even dizzy if they were apart for too long.

And still, people were hypnotized by that concept, fascinated by it. Always, the positives aspects of the bond appeared to win over the downsides. The feeling of a true and pure connection that people swore were unique. Being completely understood. Loved. Cherished. To know that someone was bound to you and could feel what you feel.

So cheesy.

Haru Igarashi wanted to throw up.
