Epilogue
It was almost eerie on how quickly things became normal, well as normal as you could get with how everything paranormal seemed to be in forks. The hospital was all too willing to accept Carlisle back with open arms after he had explained about the trip to L.A. As a Senior in high school, I was busy trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life, furthering my education was always a given, but I had never pinned down a direction. Jasper was there helping me fill out college applications, and unlike my twin I was in a better position to graduate with better marks.
Speaking of my twin there was an uneasy rift between us and the rest of the family. By us, I meant Jasper and I, the family - and Bella and Edward. Apparently my last rant was not unheard and Carlisle took my words to heart about Edward being spoiled rotten. I got on with the rest of the family with no issues, but Edward gave me a wide berth. My own family, Isabella, refused to speak to me unless necessary, up until Charlie roared at her that she was being childish and the verbal tearing into was warranted – I had told Charlie about the verbal lashing, although conveniently leaving out the time/place of where it took.
So currently we were cordial, although I could see she was unhappy about the freedoms she took for granted. Charlie allowed Edward to visit during Isabella's visiting hours in the house, but she wasn't able to leave the house – a condition of her grounding. She was only allowed to school and work.
Life returned to normal as it did before the Cullen's left, Jasper had all his classes with me, and walked me two and front class. It made for an interesting day when we returned and Jasper was by my side…
~*~Memory~*~
I could feel the anxiety and read as we arrived in the school parking lot. Returning to school was one thing, but returning when I knew the pressure of the triplets was another. I found myself half wishing Emmett hadn't graduated yet, most people thought twice about approaching anyone near him. A pale hand steadied my leg to a stop, it had been bouncing since I had climbed into the Jeep.
"Anxious, darlin?"
His voice was amused, but I could see the underlining worry in his eyes.
"You know why…" I mumbled.
Jasper's butterscotch eyes darkened slightly. We had of course, talked about today, and the implications. I was also utterly aware of the implications and cautions of Jasper coming to school. While I hadn't directly spoke with the McCullough boys since our 'run-in' at the market, they had been sure to make sure that I knew that they were ALWAYS watching me. It seemed that everywhere I went there was one or all of them there. That only sent my anxiety spiking.
"Don't stress darlin', I ain't gunna let them near you without me around," Jasper assured me.
He sent a wave of calm through me and my leg stopped bouncing, I sent him a grateful smile he kissed my forehead and walked around to let me out. If I was entirely honest it wasn't just seeing the triplets that concerned me, it also concerned me on how Jasper was going to react to them. He and Rose both shared the sentiment that they needed to 'disappear'. I just hoped we could all be as civil as possible.
Surprisingly the morning went off without a hitch, but in my peripheral I could see the triplets faces marred with confusion at Jasper's appearance and how we interacted. It wasn't until lunch when something happened. Jasper and I had taken up our eating lunch out at a tree near the gym. I was sitting between his legs, my back on his chest, his arm wrapped around my waist, the other was flipping through a math book, 'studying'. Jasper noticed them before I did, his head turning at their approach. He shut the book, I kept my arms crossed over his one, hoping to remind him of a barrier should he chose to snap. But he felt calm.
"Y'all must be the new students," Jasper mused at their approach.
His accent was thick – double crap – Major was out to play.
Amalus was in front, with Gideon and Tidus flanking him. Major's fingers twitched slightly at their posturing but made no other outward movement.
"I was beginning to wonder if the Cullen family were nothing more than a myth, yet here you are,"
Amalus's voice was quiet and unthreatening, but that all but better served the purpose of drawing someone in. I swallowed nervously, Jasper's fingers began to gently trace shapes on my hip. I'm not sure if it was something to distract himself or me. Either way…
"Was there something ya needed?" Jasper asked.
It wasn't a rude question but did go directly to the point. Amalus's eyes narrowed a fraction at the response. He apparently wasn't used to being talked down upon. His eyes then landed on me.
"May want to watch out for that one, she's … not known for her faithfulness or loyalty." He said slowly.
"Good fun though," Tidus mused.
Good lord these boys are going to die
Jasper gave a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes.
"I've heard many stories about you McCullough boys."
"Oh and what is that?" Gideon asked.
"You ain't particularly kind to women, and you don't play well with others,"
A cold smirk graced Amalus's face.
"What proof do you have? Besides the words of a broken girl?" He asked gesturing to me.
"Medical records, newspaper articles, arrest warrants. Authorities may think you've turned over a new leaf, but we both know better."
The boys wisely chose not to respond.
"Not entirely sure how you managed to track Lettie down again, and frankly I don't give a fuck. But I'm only goin to say this once so pay attention real close."
The smile dropped off Jasper's face.
"Leave Lettie alone, or I'll do to ya what ya did to the Anderson boy look mild."
"Is that a threat?" Gideon asked eyes wild.
"A promise," Jasper vowed..
~*~Memory~*~
I was proud of Jasper for not ripping into them, I'm sure he wanted to. Hell, I knew it was without question for Major. To their credit of taking Major's threat seriously, they had stayed away, but they did glower from afar. Jacob hadn't come around, but I received texts later from him saying that he appreciated what I did, and that I'm always more than welcome over to visit the pack and Emily. Surprisingly, he and Jasper got along well too, they often talked cars, and even exchanged numbers, that pack also seemed to be on ok terms with him and Peter.
Speaking of the white blond, he didn't stay around much, choosing for him and his lady love to move on now that the Cullen family were back in Forks. Jasper assured me I'd meet them officially another time – preferably when my life wasn't in danger from a raging red headed vampire.
Isabella still hadn't heard from Jake, something that annoyed her to no end, and was a constant source of amusement for me. Of course she still didn't think she had done anything wrong, even after my tearing into her, and her undead knight in shining armor did nothing to tell her otherwise.
It was Saturday and I was prepping for a trip down to La Push to see everyone. Jasper needed to hunt and get somethings done around the house for Esme. So after the daily morning routine and a kiss from Jasper I went downstairs to eat breakfast. Bella was away at work, and no doubt Eddie would there right as she got off. Charlie was actually home for once, likely to make sure Bella was keeping her word and not leaving the house. I checked my phone to make sure that I hadn't missed anything when I saw a text from Jake.
Meet in the woods behind the house.
Cryptic, and I kissed Charlie goodbye before heading out the back door. Charlie seemed less worried about me and where I went, but at least I told him where I was going and who I was with, which seemed to fill the need to check on me constantly. I barely was just in the tree line when I saw Jake leaning against the trunk of a fallen tree. His face broke out to a grin when he saw me. He accepted the rushing hug I gave him squeezing me tight. Pulling back at him it looks like he got bigger.
"Did you grow again?" I asked accusingly.
Jake snickered.
"Slightly, wait till you see Paul,"
Paul was definitely one of the more hot-headed of the pack, but he was also fiercely loyal to his friends and family. He was also rather fond of me. I noticed mischief dancing in his eyes.
"What did you do?"
Jake shrugged his broad shoulders, but I could see he was slightly preening. Before I could question him further, my phone buzzed. It was from Charlie.
C: You don't have a motorcycle at Jake's right?
Confused I sent my reply.
L: Nope, Jake has the Rabbit, don't need really to get around anywhere except walking or riding with him.
C: Thought so –
Seconds later I head expletives from the house, and Jake's shoulder shook with laughter. Finally the pieces clicked.
"What did you do?" I asked.
"I may, or may not have left Bella's motorcycle by the cruiser."
My mouth dropped open.
"She's going to be grounded till she's thirty," I snickered.
Jake just grinned but then turned stony faced, I turned and sat back on the trunk that he had been leaning on. Jake's body begin shaking slightly. Bella and Edward came through the tree line, Edward had put himself between my twin and Jake. I fought to not roll my eyes, out of the entire pack, Jake probably had the best control aside from Sam.
"Bella," Jake said in greeting.
"How could you do this to me, Jacob?" Bella whined.
"It's for the best,"
Bella scowled.
"What is that supposed to mean? Do you want Charlie to strange me? Or did you want him to have a heart attack, like Harry? No matter how mad you are at me, how could you do this to him?"
I frowned at that statement.
"Low blow," I said darkly.
"He did not want to hurt anyone – he wanted you to get grounded, so that you would not be able to spend time with me," Edward offered.
Jake and I both glowered at the vampire. Gifted or not, it was low to use that against Bella.
"Jake why are you avoiding me?" Bella whined.
Jake shrugged his face becoming indifferent.
"Nothing to say,"
Bella's jaw dropped quite comically at his response.
"That's it?! That's how our friendship ends?"
"You chose that Bella, not me. You made that decision the moment you walked out that door,"
His face was hard an unreadable, like stone, Bella was losing it, I could see the panic in her eyes.
"I see Bella wasn't exaggerating about your - abilities. So you must already know why I'm here."
"Yes," Edward agreed in a soft voice. "But, before you begin, I need to say something."
The shudders that once ran through Jake's body stilled in surprise. Bella seemed mystified as well.
"For keeping Bella alive," Edward clarified. "When I – didn't."
Understanding washed over Jake's face, but his mask returned.
"I didn't do it for your benefit."
"I know. But that doesn't erase the gratitude I feel."
Bella and Edward locked eyes and Jacob made a gagging noise, I kicked Jake's leg and he sniggered.
"Was there something else you needed, Jacob? You wanted me in trouble – mission accomplished. Charlie might just send me to military school. But that won't keep me away from Edward. There's nothing that can do that. What more do you want?" Bella asked.
I glared at my twin, she was being undeniably rude. Jacob refocused on Edward.
"I just need to remind your - coven – a few points in the treaty they agreed to. The treaty is actually the only thing stopping me from ripping his throat out right this minute."
"We haven't forgotten," Edward said.
"What key points?" Bella demanded.
"The treaty is quite specific. If any of them bite a human, the truce is over. Bite, not kill." He emphasized.
"Well there goes that," I muttered.
Jake gave me a deadpanned look.
"I want no images of what you and Jazz do in the bedroom,"
I flushed scarlet and he snickered at my red face as I smacked him on the arm. Realization must have hit Bella's mind.
"That' isn't your business." She said cold.y
"The hell it – "
The words brought a strong response to Jake, his wolf dangerously at the top of his skin, threatening to come out. Bella took a step forwards but Edward yanked her back. Gently I rubbed my hand on his back soothing him, he was almost back to normal.
"BELLA!" Charlie bellowed from the house. "YOU COME INTO THE HOUSE THIS INSTANT!"
We all froze, listening to the silence that followed.
"Crap," Bella spoke.
Jake shrugged.
"Thanks so much," She said sarcastically to the russet native.
"One more thing," He looked at Jake, "We've found no trace of Victoria on our side of the line – have you?"
I froze at her name, she still occasionally starred in my nightmares with her dead lover James.
"The last time while Bella was – away, we let her think she was slipping through – we were tightening the circle – getting ready to ambush her – "
I swallowed hard, not hearing this part of the story.
"But then took off like a bat out of hell. Near as we can tell, she caught the little female's scent, and bailed. She hasn't come near out lands since."
Edward nodded.
"When she comes back, she's not your problem anymore. We'll – "
"She killed on our turf," Jacob hissed. "She's ours!"
"BELLA! I SEE HIS CAR AND I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE! IF YOU AREN'T INSIDE THIS HOUSE IN ONE MINUTE - !" Charlie didn't bother to finish his threat.
"Let's go," Edward said.
Bella didn't even protest as he whirled her around to and led her back to the house. I sighed and looked over at Jake.
"You okay?" I murmured.
Jake's shoulders dropped but he turned towards me, sad.
"I will be," he assured me.
I smiled softly at him.
"Hey, one day you're going to meet a girl that knocks your socks off,"
"What? You can see the future now?" He teased.
I smacked him.
"I'm no Alice, but I'm serious Jake. Chin up, I've got your back, and I love you to bits. You know that right?"
Jake's face softened and pulled me into a hug.
"I know, and love you too. Thanks for having my back," He murmured.
"Always!"
It was true, I loved Jake like a brother, and we have had each other's backs since diapers, that wasn't going to stop now. Not because I have a boyfriend whom I loved dearly, and not because my best friend and boyfriend and his family were mortal enemies – because before I met any of them, Jake was there. And honestly that was how things were supposed to be for Isabella and I and Jake. But she was too caught up in her obsession with the golden child of the Cullen family. Although from what Jasper had told me he wasn't too golden now, having been apparently scolded by the patriarch of the family.
"Ready to get going? I'm sure we'll be hearing all about it from Paul if we don't get there soon."
I nodded smiling at my best friend. Things were going well, but that's usually when shit hit the preverbal fan. Victoria was out there too, no doubt planning and plotting. All we could do was wait, and be fearless in the face of danger.
