A/N: Hi there, fellow reader! It's been awhile since I've dabbled into this certain fandom, but alas I'm back and with a new story for y'all!
Wow, can't believe it's been almost ten years since the very first chapter of Mario and Sonic: Heroes Unite was posted. I was super young back then with a simple passion to write fun stories about my favourite childhood video game characters. To be honest, I've never thought of making an entire sequel to my prior work - only promising if I came up with a really solid plot and purpose to continue the story.
And now, seven years after the original story has been finished, I'm happy to say that we're here for the premiere of Heroes Reunited! Yay!
You won't necessarily need to have read all of Mario and Sonic: Heroes Unite. It's 100 chapters in total, so I understand if it's way too much for anyone to catch up on. I'll do my best to explain everything in this story regarding what's happened then and now. But basically, this fic is gonna be another adventure with Mario and Sonic teaming. This is an idea I'm sure you are all familiar with, except with all the heroes being older and more mature, as well as being a story with its own unique plot.
This sequel will also implement aspects introduced in the holiday special too - Holidays Unite, which is a much easier one-shot to quickly skim over if you're interested! I would say that having basic knowledge of what happened in the prior stories will immensely add to the overall experience while reading the sequel, as there will be a few callbacks here and there that I'll make. Again, not mandatory, but will benefit to the experience!
Sorry for the really long author's note! Future notes won't be this long - I just figured to make this one super-detailed since it's the first one back with the Mario and Sonic fandom! There is a little extra author notes at the end regarding episode schedules and the direction this story will take place, so please read it afterwards.

"The Story of When Heroes United"

Dear child... Let me tell you the legend of when two worlds collided long ago.
One world held the heroics of a courageous man in red - who valiantly fought against a tyrannical beast determined to cause havoc among their kingdom. Another land showcased the triumphs of a blue speedster – using his unmatchable movements to triumph in his encounters against an evil genius bent on world domination.
For years, these heroes remained separated in their own worlds, fighting through many battles, traversing on countless adventures and creating memorable bonds with the allies they met along the way.
One day, a familiar robotic foe of the speedster decided to expand his powers by unlocking the key to a world of darkness. In order to achieve his desire, the robot called upon the aid of a young prince who was the very son of the tyrannical beast of the other world. With their efforts combined, they sought the powers of the Star Children and energy of the Chaos Emeralds in each world in order to open the gate to the dark dimension.
Fortunately, the heroes found their paths crossing together as they eventually teamed up, determined to thwart the plans of their enemies and to protect their worlds at all costs. With the help of their friends, the heroes managed to stop the evil beast resting within the dark world and brought peace to their lands once more.
With the mission accomplished, the heroes returned to their respective worlds – unaware that the connection between them had been severed. Regardless of this hidden truth, they moved on with their lives as many more adventures awaited them.
Years eventually passed as the heroes began to grow. Their roles began to shift and their relationships went one of two ways - either remaining strong in the foundation of their loyalty to one another, or slowly dwindled away as they moved on to the next journey of their lives.
However, the connections between the heroes would one day mend itself. A new enemy would threaten the peace and harmony the heroes had fought so long to obtain. As a bridge of destiny slowly built itself between their worlds, the heroes would slowly come together again for an adventure that changed their lives forever.
This is the tale of when they reunited...
[ EPISODE 1: Seven Years Later ]

as faithful rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom."

A beautiful day overcame the sprawling land of the Mushroom Kingdom as it continued to reign in its long period of peace and prosperity. Many of the kingdom's residents happily went about their usual routines within Toad Town – famously known as the humbling community surrounding the Royal Castle. Over the years, the Mushroom Kingdom had gone through drastic changes with its leadership, previously handled mainly by one individual known by Princess Toadstool – or more notably, Princess Peach.
But nowadays – the royal princess ruled over the kingdom with her reliable partner - who just so happened to be the always recognizable moustachioed plumber known to jump into action whenever his heroics were needed.
"Oh Mario, my dear!" Peach's voiced called out with a pleasant tone as she gently knocked on their bedroom door. Dressed in a more elegant and detailed version of her prior pink dress – which added more white floral designs and beige frills across her skirt – Peach entered their master bedroom with a tray of freshly-made peach tea and strawberry breakfast scones to share with her partner.
Sleeping peacefully in their massive bed laid the king himself – happily dreaming about his usual love for food.
"Ohhhh… mamamia, what a beautiful pizza pie… zzz.." Mario's voice snored out. Being a rowdy sleeper himself, Mario had his entire body sprawled across the king-sized pink bed that he shared with Peach. Half the blanket seemed to always drape off to the side while the other half barely covered Mario in his pyjamas as he continued snoring in peace. This amusing sight had become a regular viewing for Peach these days.
"Oh goodness, we're going to have to install railings on the side before Mario ends up falling off our bed." Peach commented. Her husband seemed to find unique positions to pose on top of their bed – with some making him appear as if he were posing for very seductive painting. She had adopted to being an early riser herself due to waking up from Mario's constant tossing and turning in bed and this routine had become the norm for Peach in the last few years she was married to him.
Looking over to the time, Peach began to gently push Mario in order to wake him up. "Hey, Mario. Wake up my dear. We have a long day ahead of us."
"Mhmm… N-No Yoshi… Please leave my pizza pie alone..." Mario grumbled out.
"Huh.. He's dreaming about Yoshi now." Peach said, tapping her chin as she noticed a pattern to her husband's dreams recently – they always consisted of Mario falling in love with a sort of cuisine, only to end up in a fight against one of his friends to see who would enjoy the specially chosen food at the time. One instance had Mario verse Donkey Kong in a boxing match to find out the winner to a Banana Cream Pie, while another had Mario racing against his own brother for the prized possession of a humongous beef bowl.
"GAAH! Mamamia!" Mario suddenly gasped, jumping out from bed as he began to look around his surroundings. His sudden outburst caused Peach to jump in place, frightened by her husband's loud awakening.
"M-Mario! Please, don't scare me like that." Peach stomped as she calmed down.
"S-Sorry! Ooof, I just had the worst nightmare ever." Mario began to apologize as he scratched his head in embarrassment. "I-I was having a dream when myself and Yoshi were versing each other in an all-out baseball game. Our scoring was practically tied until Yoshi came to bat."
"Did you win?" Peach asked.
"No… He won by a home-run and I was forced to watch him eat the entire pizza pie prize by himself!" Mario began to shudder in agony, remembering the vivid image of Yoshi diving into the gigantic pizza pie and munching into every inch like a crazed Piranha Plant.
Peach couldn't help but giggle at her husband's antics. The most courageous man she ever knew – made nervous by the thought that his favorite foods became out of reach for him. Peach approached Mario as she gently caressed his face with her hand and gave him a comforting smile. "Well, no worries my dear. I'll be sure to make you an extra serving of pizza pie then next time we have dinner together. It'll have the sweet touch from my usual recipes that you always tell me you love."
"Wahooh! I can't wait!" Mario exclaimed, jumping up in his spot. He absolutely loved his wife's cooking. It was one of his many favourite perks of marrying Princess Peach, whom he was glad to call his forever queen of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Mario's marriage to Peach had been a long-awaited one. After years of adventuring around the world and thwarting the plans of a gallery of evil beings, there had finally come a time when Mario and Peach's relationship slowly moved to the next level. The memory for them remained vivid even after all these years of marriage. Harking back to the Snow Spirit Ball, an announcement was made to declare truce between the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser's army after practically a life time of being at odds against one another. Sensing that this was going to be the start of bigger changes to come in their world, Mario managed to pop the question to Peach near the end of the ball, with the latter party happily accepting the proposal.
Almost seven years later, both Mario and Peach remained happy in their marriage - standing together as faithful rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom. Living in their happily ever after they had fought so long for.
"Now come on, my dear! We don't have much time to waste. We'll be leaving the kingdom right after breakfast for our meeting." Peach gently reminded Mario. Making her way over to the tray of tea and scones, she gently motioned her husband to hurry as they had a tight schedule ahead of them. "Here – have a quick bite before showering. I already have Cappy and the other Toads preparing the Odyssey for our travels."
Mario nodded, remembering their plans for the day as he quickly munched over his scone. After enjoying his brief breakfast, the king made a dash into their maser bathroom to shower and dress himself. Taking the clothes Peach had prepped for him, Mario quickly changed into his attire.
Being the king of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach decided to upgrade Mario's classic hat and overalls, fitting her husband with a more regal version of his traditional wear while still retaining some of its original charm. His attire consisted of a stylish black vest with white lining with two yellow buttons near the bottom, with the zipper reaching only halfway down the vest. Underneath was a maroon, short-sleeved shirt with white-lining covering the cuffs. Mario's pants mimicked his traditional overalls, with straps and zippers all around the dark azure fabric. Mario fitted himself with a more complex version of his brown shoes - which had black soles and straps at the front in a lighter tone of brown. Last but not least were his trademark white gloves and red cap with the letter "M", each retaining its classic look from before.
"Let's-a go!" Mario exclaimed in the mirror as he motivated himself for the day ahead. Every time he looked at himself, Mario couldn't help but feel impressed by the shift in his attire. No longer was he an ordinary plumber jumping into adventures every so often. Now - he was king of the Mushroom Kingdom, ready to serve his people as an honourable leader should.
Joining along Peach to clean up after their breakfast, the couple soon began to make their way downstairs towards the castle gardens where their ride awaited them. Passing through the Hallway of Paintings, Mario came across a notable picture as he stopped and stared at it for a moment.
"Heheh, that was always a nice one, right my dear?" Peach asked, noticing her husband staring at the familiar painting. Coming to his side, Peach smiled as she reflected on the friendships they had made with their allies from the other world.
Mario nodded, keeping his gaze at the picture hanging as memories began to flash of the epic crossover years ago. The painting he pondered at was with their own friends and Sonic's comrades. At the time, it only consisted of the blue speedster himself, his trusty fox mechanic - Miles "Tails" Prower, their hammer-wielding ally - Amy Rose, and the easily flustered Master Emerald guardian – Knuckles the Echidna. It had been a picture taken right at the end of their adventure in the Mushroom World. The heroes had just defeated Bowser and Dr. Eggman and retrieved the Jeweled Scepter that was needed to bring Sonic and his friends home.
After a night of celebrating their victory, the heroes had taken one last picture to commemorate their success – believing that it would be the last time they'd see each other again. Although, the assumption was much farther from the truth at the time. Mario and his allies did not expect finding themselves in Sonic's world the night after. All because Junior attempted to use their energy to open up a portal to the Negative Dimension. Nevertheless - the koopaling's plan failed as they ended up on another wild adventure through Sonic's world - with more allies to bond with and more baddies to defeat.
The entire adventure happened almost seven years ago. To Mario - it was one of his greatest memories yet. He remembered his promise made to Sonic that they would meet one day, but it had never come to fruition. Mario and his friends did all they could to figure out a way back to Sonic's world – even consulting with Professor Elvin Gadd to see if he had any ideas on reconnecting their worlds.
But nothing seemed to work. As their hope slowly dwindled away, Mario and his friends eventually moved on, each one stepping forward into the next phase of their lives. With all these changes however, Mario and his friends seemed to find less time with each other as they began to grow apart in their newfound duties. Sure, they'd have their occasional get togethers every once in awhile, but with no worries of danger in their lives or perilous adventures to bring them together - the heroes took the opportunity to grow individually and rediscover their purposes.
Although - even when he was blessed to be the new king of Mushroom Kingdom and was no doubt happy for his friends, Mario still yearned for the days of adventuring with them to return. But none of that was possible anymore with his duty as king. Mario had to grow into a different kind of hero, one where he would look out for his people and ensure their lives remained peaceful through the connections he'd make. Peach and himself would constantly go on meetings with other kingdoms around the world and ensure every area was doing well. If a problem arose with the residents, the royal couple would not hesitate in solving the issue head-on.
The adventurous life of a hero, traded for the comfortable one of a peaceful king. An evolution Mario had taken a while to grow used to.
"Hey, Mario." Peach suddenly spoke up, resting a hand on her husband's shoulder as she noted the melancholic look on his face. He seemed to be staring out into space with a blank look for some time. "Is something on your mind, my dear?"
Mario looked up to his wife and smiled - quickly readjusting his hat as he perked up his expression. "Mhmm.. No worries, I'm a-okay! C'mon, let's head to the Odyssey. We don't want to make the koopa king himself waiting any longer for us."
"Heheh, no worries. I'm sure his queen is keeping him pretty busy with preparations back in their kingdom." Peach assured.
As the royal couple continued their way to the gardens, they skimmed over the details of the important meeting they'd soon have at Bowser's home land – recently established as the "Bosakura Kingdom". It was a blossoming new kingdom built by the koopa king himself in order to prove to the rest of the world that he truly changed and wasn't conjuring up another facade. Taking years to build after Bowser's declaration of truce, the newly established kingdom had grown quite popular and eventually became the public's choice to host the next annual Mushroom World Unity Festival. Mario, Peach and Pauline had made plans to visit with Bowser in his kingdom in order to verify the final preparations that day before organization would begin.
"It's still quite surreal that Bowser managed to build up such a glorious kingdom in the last few years," Peach commented. "Everything about it looks to be a paradise right out of a fairytale."
"Bowser has been working very hard to create the perfect utopia. Even rivalling our own kingdom's magnificent appearance, heheh." Mario added. Even though he and Bowser were no longer arch-enemies, Mario could sense the koopa king's desire to stilll outdo his rival by establishing a bigger and better kingdom. Regardless, Mario had to admit that Bowser's efforts were worthy of praise, as the entire theme and atmosphere of Bosakura Kingdom was unlike any he had seen before.
"Bosakura Kingdom - a land literally blossoming with life." Peach said, taking a moment to imagine the kingdom in her mind once more. "The abundance of cherry blossoms are still my absolute favourite sight to see from there."
"Mine are the literal honey rivers flowing through the valleys. I'm still wondering how Bowser managed to do that." Mario spoke up, rubbing his chin as he tried to comprehend the fact, only to cause his mouth to water at the endless supply of honey that he imagined himself swimming in.
"Ohhh Mario. If you hadn't married me, I'm sure you would be the proud husband of practically all foods by now." Peach joked.
"Heheh... But nothing compares to you, my love!"
After their light discussion of Bowser's new kingdom - the royal couple finally arrived at the castle gardens and made their way to the Odyssey Pad. The area was delegated for the preparations for Mario's airships previously used on one of his many adventures years ago. The Odyssey itself was shaped akin to a red top hat, with windows peering into the interior, a globe fixated on the outside that served as a map and golden propellors protruding from the bottom. Above the Odyssey was it's main power source – a glass orb that contained enormous amounts of moon energy, along with a gigantic balloon that assisted with the airship's lift off.
Leading the preparations for the airship was its main conductor and trusted ally to Mario – the Bonneter native Cappy. Assisting him was his sister Tiara, who ensured that her older brother remained diligent in his job.
"Good morning to the lovely couple!" Cappy happily greeted, waving over Mario and Peach as they approached the Odyssey pad.
"You look exquisite as always, Madame Peach!" Tiara exclaimed, flying around the royal couple in excitement. "And you're looking spiffy yourself too, Master Mario!"
"Why thank you, Tiara!" Peach replied with a smile.
"Is everything good to go, Cappy?" Mario asked, turning his attention to the Odyssey pilot.
"All is accounted for! Power Moon levels are steady, propellors have been cleaned and maintained, and the entire interior has been vacuumed to the highest level of cleanliness for optimal travel experience!" Cappy responded with diligence.
"Woohoo! Excellent job as always!" Mario praised, giving a high-five to his comrade.
"I've also prepared some travel snacks for us!" Tiara brought up, taking out a basket of sandwiches – made with the freshest ingredients from within the castle's garden.
"Oh, how kind of you Tiara. These will compliment the package of Double Cherry Tea that I had stored within the Odyssey!" Peach expressed with gratitude.
"Hmm… I was hoping for some pizza pies..." Mario commented with a disappointed tone.
"Mario! Please show a little thanks for our lovely Tiara." Peach gently corrected him. "It appears she has devoted a lot of her free time in making these sandwiches look exquisite for our travel."
"Ohh yah! Uhm- I cannot wait to try out your delicious sandwiches, lil' miss Tiara!" Mario quickly recovered himself.
"I'm sure you will love 'em, Master Mario! I even made a special one for you - it's filled to the brim with pepperoni and cheese slices!" Tiara exclaimed. Her comment evidently made Mario begin to water from his mouth as he couldn't wait to dig into the sandwiches.
"King Marioooo!" another voiced suddenly echoed into the gardens. Coming from the back entryway of the castle, a certain Yoshi clad in his commander uniform made his way over to the Odyssey Pad. Arriving in front of the royal couple, the Yoshi did a quick salute with a chipper smile on his face. "Sorry for being late! I just finished up reports with the entire squadron right now."
Yoshi, one of Mario's most trusted allies. Ever since their first partnership back at Yoshi's Island in Dinosaur World, the green dino himself always displayed his loyalty whenever Mario went on his countless adventures. This had become the seed to an immense respect and trust between Mario and Yoshi that remained throughout the years. As the Mushroom Kingdom began to shift into drastic changes, Mario had gone through careful consideration and appointed Yoshi to be the commanding officer of the castle's newly revamped army.
Now known as the Shroom Troops - the squadron was basically a joint venture consisting of the prior Toad Retainers of the castle, along with an army of Yoshis dedicating their lives to maintain the peace that all kingdoms had sought for. Stepping up their attire, all of the Yoshis and Toad Retainers were fitted with protective knights armor – equipped with matching shields and spears for defense. Yoshi himself was fitted with chainmail armor, with a cape that contained the Mushroom Kingdom insignia on a black and red checkerboard pattern. The dino had vowed to wear his outfit proudly and take his responsibility as the army's commander seriously – which meant changing from his carefree attitude towards a more disciplined role throughout the years.
"Oh, good morning Yoshi! Glad to see you in such a bright mood so early this morning." Peach happily greeted their army commander.
"Yoshi! Good to see you this morning." Mario expressed, giving a quick salute to his specially chosen army commander. "Say… you didn't happen to come across a pizza pie, hmm?"
"Uhmm… no, not that I'm aware of." Yoshi replied with a confused look.
"Please don't mind Mario's unusual question. You were actually part of his dream earlier." Peach commented. "Although nightmare would be a more accurate description from his perspective."
"H-Huh? I was your nightmare, Your Majesty? What did I do?" Yoshi asked, raising an eyebrow to his king.
"Oh… haha, no worries my trusted army commander! It's nothing but water under the bridge now!" Mario assured, coming over to Yoshi's side as he patted his friend's back, although the dinosaur still gave a look of confusion to his king. "Anyway, anything exciting to report today? Or is it the usual?"
"Just the usual, my king!" Yoshi replied with enthusiasm. "The rest of the Shroom Army had just finished the perimeter check – and like always, there are no signs of any threat whatsoever!"
"Yahoo! That's amazing!" Mario exclaimed. Even though this was old news nowadays, it was another day of peace added to their long-running period of prosperity for the Mushroom Kingdom.
"Heheh, oh Yoshi. How many times must we assure you that the honourifics aren't necessary?" Peach reminded him. "You are more than welcome to just call us by our names like before."
"But you guys are literally the King and Queen of the Mushroom Kingdom! There's no excuse for me not to call you as your appropriate titles." Yoshi retorted. "As the commander of the army you've entrusted me, I must take my job seriously! There are many lives in the kingdom that count on my leadership – and that also stems from how I treat my given authority with respect!"
"I'm very lucky to have such a loyal friend to call my commander," Mario stated, giving Yoshi another pat on the back as he was proud of his comrade's disciplined attitude. "You've been doing nothing less of an amazing job, my friend. You're one of the key reasons why our kingdom remains safe."
"And I intend to keep it that way!" Yoshi remarked.
"As much as we'd love to continue chatting, we do have a strict schedule to follow." Peach gently reminded the two. She turned over to Yoshi and quickly gave him an acknowledging nod. "Oh, and please give my dearest greetings to Birdo and Bethany for me."
"Certainly, my Queen!" Yoshi exclaimed, giving Peach a quick salute as he watched her enter the Odyssey.
"We'll be back as soon as our duties are finished, Yoshi!" Mario told him, giving a final salute as he entered the Odyssey. "I trust that you will keep the fort safe until we're done."
"Understood! I won't let you down, Your Highness!" Yoshi saluted back.
Mario and Peach eventually made themselves comfy in the Odyssey, relaxing in the airship's couches as Cappy and Tiara initiated lift off. Flying out of the castle gardens, the Odyssey soared through the sky and began to make its course up north towards Bosakura Kingdom.
"This view just never gets old." Peach commented, standing up from her seat as she looked out the airship windows and began to marvel at the sight of Mushroom Kingdom in its glorious entirety. The Royal Castle placed atop the highest hill, which overlooked the humbling Toad Town below as residents were busy with their usual routines around the community. The grand lake sat beside the entire kingdom, while various racing circuits and tennis courts surrounded the perimeters. Many of the Shroom Army were currently on guard duty atop the kingdom's grand walls.
"It looks so peaceful down there." Mario said, joining his wife by her side as they enjoyed the view together. "To think, every single being down there is going through a journey of their own - whether big or small. And they don't have to worry whether there will be another attack or if the kingdom will be endangered once again. We all can just go about our lives happily."
"Hey Mario, do you ever miss our days of adventuring?" Peach suddenly asked, looking over to her partner in curiosity.
"Heheh, don't tell me now that you miss being kidnapped all the time." Mario joked, causing Peach to giggle.
"Well, now that you mention it, there was a sense of thrill that I did appreciate before." Peach replied, reminiscing not just the countless times she had been kidnapped by Bowser – but on the opportunities she had on tackling adventures herself. "How about you? Don't you sometimes get that yearning to go out on another journey again? To explore new lands and overcome the challenges thrown at you?"
Mario nodded as he took a moment to think about Peach's prior question. "I do – all the time. But I understand that those days are in the past. Now, we must look forward into carving a brighter future for the next generation. We've been called forth to become leaders of our kingdom and ensuring that our friends and citizens can live comfortably. The days will always move forward, so we should too."
"I see... Heheh, you've really grown into your role as a king quite comfortably, huh?" Peach added, staring at her husband with adoration in her eyes. "Then let's continue carving that future together."
Mario nodded as he gently grabbed Peach's hand and caressed it. The duo had experienced so many challenges together their entire lives. And now, with their rings binding them into a commitment of a lifetime, the couple would continue to walk down the path of life as one unit and face their future with optimism. With the long-standing truce between the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser's monarchy to make their desires possible, Mario and Peach couldn't have asked for anything more to go right in their lives.
But… their comfortable roles as king and queen would soon face an unexpected challenge – one that would not only threaten the peace of their world – but another as well.

A/N: End of Episode 1! Don't worry, we'll be heading over to Sonic's world soon to see how the other group is doing! And the other Mario characters will be making an appearance eventually! All good things come to those who wait, right?
So for this certain approach towards the characters to be very different from any other stories . I've always wanted to write a story taking place in the future and see where these characters would be if the whole dynamic around them had changed. - which is why I purposefully jumped a couple years ahead from the current canon between the Mario and Sonic franchises. I see this opportunity as allowing these characters to grow and witness them in a fresh, new light. No worries, you'll still get to see the familiar quirks that each character is known for!
I'll be ensuring to implement elements from the more recent Mario and Sonic games that I haven't written from yet - including Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, Sonic Forces, Sonic Lost World, and even a little bit of Sonic Boom. Also, I'll be taking lore beyond the respective game franchises, more specifically the spinoffs and other media that Mario and Sonic have been seen in. Maybe something out of the comics? Even the television shows? You'll have to find out later!
I'm also planning on adding story elements and mechanics inspired from other games that I've recently played - not from the Mario and Sonic universe. A lot of main inspirations include the Persona series, as well as the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake - both game series which have amazing stories to them, as well as my recommendations for y'all to check out if you haven't yet!
Right now however, things will be taking a slow start as the story establishes the returning characters and future setting. I've got so much already planned - such as new story elements, new character interactions, new enemies to be introduced and full of awesome surprises that I'm excited to share - so please bare with me as we get this adventure rolling. I promise to do my best in updating this fic until it is completely finished! I do suggest on having the follow updates added to your notifications, as unlike my last Mario and Sonic story, I won't be updating on a strict weekly-to-weekly basis. Chapters will come up whenever they're complete - most likely on the weekends - so if you're raring to read the newest chapter when it's posted, you'll know exactly when it's up!
