WHAT IF RE:ZERO CAME WITH AN OVERPOWERED SIDE CHARACTER? ARC 1: EPISODE 1
For Natsuki Subaru, it had mostly been a night just like any other. He wanted to buy some necessities to laze around in his room for a few days again, so he decided to go grocery shopping in a convenience store which happened to have open at such a late time. While there, he took a few minute and read into some of the newest manga they had for sale, skimming through the pages quickly before setting it back where he found it. After he had sufficiently taken his own time inside the store, he walked up towards the Counter to pay for his stuff, but when he did, he rose his eyebrows a bit as he saw who was working the night shift.
"Well well well, if it ain't the freeloading Bumm." The person behind the counter responded, much to Natsuki's mild displeasure. He simply pouted a bit and placed his items against the counter for the person to scan.
That person's name was Ikkiwake Sengoku and he had been Natsuki's only friend in the recent years, more or less. Sengoku was a slender but tall man with a thin, pointy facial structure and mild cheekbones. Sengoku was also Heterochromic, having one Blue and one Green eye, which he combined with a hairstyle that mimicked his eyes. His left green eye came with the left half of his hair being Blue and vice versa, giving his looks quite the contrast. His hair was quite long for a Male's, reaching to the central cords of his Spine (A/N: halfway down his back, basically).
Subaru sighed out for a moment then gave a faint smile as he saw Sengoku. "Well, you are one to talk, Sengoku." he responded then reached for his wallet to take out the necessary money to pay for his wares. Sengoku scanned the items, took the money and handed out the change, but before he did, he gave a faint smile back at Subaru. "Hey, my shift is about to end in a few minutes. Why don't you wait up on me so we can go home together. I feel like I can beat you at your latest game for once."
The two were pretty similar in terms of their likes and dislikes. Both of them were avid gamers and just one mild obsession away from being borderline Otakus. They both enjoyed gaming against one another in different types of Fighting games, be it one on one fighters like Tekken, Shooters like Battlefield or Hack and Slash multiplayers like Mordhau. Their Rivalry was seemingly eternal, and they always somehow ended up in a draw against each others.
Subaru, grinning confidently at the request, couldn't reject this request and nodded in response. "You damn well got it. Tonight is the night I beat you once and for all." He spoke to Sengoku, who just gave his own sinister smile in response, countering Subaru's confidence with his own before responding. "Dream on, Shitbird. I am gonna stomp you."
True to his word, Subaru did stand aside after purchasing his wares and waited for Sengoku to be finished with his shift. When he was, he went to the backroom to quickly change into his normal, out-going attire consisting of a pair of black pipe Jeans which fit his legs perfectly without being too tight or constricting for movement. To it, he wore a pair of black socks under some Nike shoes. His top attire consisted of a white Skintight Shirt, which revealed that despite being a rather slim figure, Sengoku was respectably muscular and well in shape, and over the shirt came a pitch black leather jacket which he only wore over his shoulders, using a button on it's collar to keep it bound around his neck. His arms weren't within the Jacket sleeves, but in his pockets, making said jacket look more like a short makeshift-cape.
"Now then. My work here for tonight is done, so let's go and settle a score, Subaru." Sengoku responded, to which Subaru only nodded with a big, confident smile before they exchanged a Fistbump with one another. Afterwards, they both exited the Convenience Store, but just a few meters out of it, both of them saw something. A sudden, quick flash of Black and White, with a tinge of dark Purple contrast within it.
Subaru didn't seem too phased by it and started rubbing his eyes, saying "Well, that's what I get for staying in my room and Gaming all the time." This, however, greatly concerned Sengoku, because this meant he wasn't the only one who saw it. He closed his eyes to think for a second while Subaru rubbed his.
The moment both of them opened their eyes, they suddenly found themselves in an entirely different Environment. Suddenly, they stood in the middle of what seemed to be a Townsquare, but the town itself was really, really odd to look at. Most of the people they spotted were having humanoid, but also anthromorphic features. Humans with Cat ears, Lizardmen, Dog men. Furthermore, there were carriages all around, being dragged behind by large, reptilian animals on either two or four legs. The Buildings were very old-fashioned. Like, several hundrets of years old Fashioned and mostly of Medieval European architecture, as Sengoku observed.
"Ey... Subaru..." he started as he leaned his head to his friend, but not his eyes, fixiated on continuing to observe their surroundings. "You don't think we..."
Subaru himself was quite shocked and barely processing this information, his eyes widened and his mouth just one shock away from hitting the floor from gaping. "I think it too, Sengoku..." Subaru responded.
Then, both of them responded in sync, as their eyes met. "We've just been Isekai'd."
The following minutes after they drew their conclusions, Sengoku and Subaru walked around this large Town, unaware of this Town being the Capital of the country in their new world they Stumbled upon. Their scouting was mostly just mini-otakus trying to live the dream of being in another world, and the person to mostly stir trouble was actually Subaru, who not only found out for them that their currency didn't work here and they were broke as all hell, nearly picked a fight with some Demi-human girls after accidentally walking in on a public girls' bathroom, but nearly fell into a nearby river after being shoved out from a Demi-human-only Bar, and the only reason he didn't fall into it was because Sengoku caught him and pulled him back up, before scolding him about trying to be more careful, then calling him a Shitbird again.
Afterwards, seeing that they were not only broke beyond compare, but had no idea where the heck they were, what to do or how to even navigate themselves, they took a small break in an alley, sat down and tried to discuss with one another about how to address this situation. The Discussion was mostly Sengoku's suggestion, because Subaru mostly wanted to just rant away about how this doens't feel right. Sengoku shared his thoughts, but he wasn't as expressionable about it.
"Let's see..." Sengoku started while holding his hands up. "We are plunged into a new, different world we don't even know. We can't read it's language, we have none of it's money, we have no means to orient and coordinate ourselves, and we don't seem to have made any physical changes from our world." He summarized, and with each point, Subaru grew more agitated at their fate.
"So what are you saying, Sengoku?" Subaru responded, his voice betraying his utter annoyance about their predicament. Sengoku just sighed out in response, rubbed his temples then shrugged his shoulders. "It means we both are homeless, powerless, bumms. If this really is an Isekai-scenario, I don't see the two of us being Anybody's protagonist. Matter of fact, the closest thing I'd say the two of us are is an accidental mistake in god's decision making."
Yeah, as you can imagine, Subaru didn't receive this response kindly at all. He grit his teeth tightly and tried his best not to scream to the sub in pure anger and annoyance, which Sengoku just found amusing, demonstrating such with a low chuckle in his voice before he suddenly rose his hand and immediately caused Subaru to stop his antics.
From the other side of the valley, three figures were approaching the two of them. One was particularily short and seemed to have an expression of boredom. The person in the middle was of average height, very slim and looked like they hadn't slept in weeks with the amount of black rings under their eyes. The last person was quite a chunk taller than everyone else present and had a large body combined with some serious muscle in his arms.
The Three Thugs approached the pair, the male in the center having two daggers drawn and at the ready. "If you don't wanna get hurt, drop whatever you got!" He spoke, his voice, despite sounding quite hoarse, was quite loud and clear to hear. They continued to close in on their distance, but stopped just a few feet away from the pair.
Sengoku was the first one to get up, stepping closer until his face and the face of the center-guy were inches apart. Sengoku looked down at the guy, since he was a bit taller, took a slight sniff before getting a bit of a more serious expression on his face. "Your scent lacks any traces of Iron. Waving those two daggers around ain't shit if you never even hurt anyone with it, let alone kill."
This infuriated the bandit trio and they all immediately went in to Attack Sengoku, but they would quickly, and very painfully, find out how much of a mistake it was. Subaru and Sengoku were both Kendo-practitioners back in their world, but whereas Subaru was just a regular Trainee, Sengoku was their best fighter they had. It was the main reason why the two of them got along in the first place, they found their contrast to one another Poetic. Subaru was the hard-worker to Sengoku's unmatched Talent. But, Kendo wasn't the only Martial Arts Sengoku had practiced. He was also a successful Absolvent in Wushu.
His hands were quicker than the thugs could follow. He first gripped the center guy's wrists to block him from using his Daggers, then lifted both legs towards his own right side, using the large, chubby thug like a literal stepping stone, kicking along his torso before delivering a devastating kick to his Jaw. Using this kick as a means to propel his knee to the opposite direction, towards the left, he struck the center thug right into the left side of his skull, knocking him out as well. Then, following the momentum of his legs, he did a sideways flip right above the short thug, gripped him by the back of his head while finishing his spin before he then rotated around his axis, slamming the short thug's face into the wall.
In a question of a handful seconds, the three thugs were completely knocked out, each with their own Concussion to haunt them for the days to come.
Sengoku just let out a deep breath before he cracked the stiffness out of his neck by pressing it into one side, then the other, then turned to Subaru. "Come on. We gotta get out of here. If there are more thugs like them, we cou-"
"OUT OF THE WAY!" Suddenly shouted a feminine voice before it quickly passed by the two. Both Subaru and Sengoku could clearly see the figure, a short, blonde girl who seemed to be incredibly acrobatic, leaping from wall to wall to the roof right at the Alley Corner before suddenly disappearing.
"DAMNIT!" Subaru cursed out loudly. "None of this ain't right! If this really is a Summoning, where is our Main character Status and equipment! And why did this cute girl just pass us like we were merely a mild inconvenience!? Don't you think she might of summoned us here?"
Sengoku just sighed out loud, rubbing his temples for a moment before he sat down next to Subaru again. "Well, as far as Main character Status goes, I'd say I got that covered, considering how I am a superior combatant between the two of us. I did tell you to join me for Wushu after Kendo classes every damn day." He taunted lightly before he took a sinister smirk on his face. "Now you can bask in my shadow as I take the spotlight."
"DAMN YOU!" Subaru cursed, and the two of them clashed their foreheads with one another, pressing into the respective other to see who'd cave first. Sengoku taunted some more by smirking brighter. "Tough luck, Shitbird."
"STOP NOW!" Suddenly came another feminine voice, but deeper than the one before. Both guys turned their head to the other end of the Alleyway and saw the source of the Voice. Subaru could swear his eyes turned into Hearts as he saw the godly beauty before him, whereas Sengoku just scoffed mildly at the sight.
The Silver-haired girl wore a very flashy, fancy dress with a golden Eagle insignia on both it's sides, decorated with rather light purple secondary colours. The Top half of her clothes left serious cleavage as it wrapped around her body, but the cleavage was partly covered by a green, diamond shaped Crystal. Her Hair was rather long, it reached down to her waist, but it was very well kept and straightened out, wonderfully complimenting her attire and her overall looks. One end of her Hair had a 4 edge star shaped Hairpin and the other came with a silver-coloured Flower and a small knot that attaches it to her head. Her Eyes however were the main demand of attention. Purple eyes with a green triangle-shaped section on their lowest side. Even for all the Fantasy-related designs this duo had seen, she was very exceptional and different.
"I will forgive you and let you go... If you would return to me what you stole!" She spoke, her voice very demanding despite it's seeming calmness on the surface. Sengoku and Subaru kept looking at her in mild confusion as she spoke, but each one of them had said confusion broken very soon. Subaru because he felt a sudden burst of Romantic Attraction that could only be described as Love at first Sight, whereas Sengoku tried to process the train of thought regarding this entire Situation.
The Girl however continued on. "Please, it's very important to me. I'll turn the other cheek concerning the other belongings but I can't let you have that."
Sengoku's brain geared up a notch and he continued to think about this entire situation until the lightbulb in him went off and he stood up before stepping forward. "There seems to be a mild misunderstanding happening here."
The Half-Elf, which wasn't known to the two at the time, rose her eyebrow in slight curiosity as to this person's answer. Sengoku, knowing he had her attention, continued. "I assume the thief you are looking for is a Blonde girl, very short, wears red-ish attire and is extremely fast and agile. Correct?"
The Girl nodded her head slowly after accessing the contents of Sengoku's question. He then waved at Subaru to come closer as well. "Well, it seems you need help finding her, and we need help with... Everything." Sengoku then continued. "We just arrived in this town today, we have no idea where we are, nor are we in knowledge of anything regarding this Country as a whole. We offer to help you find your Thief, in return we'd like your help with getting along with our first day here."
"Wait a minute!" Subaru suddenly interrupted as he turned to Sengoku. "Hey we can't just ask her to help us first like that, she really does seem in a Hurry. Not that I'd complain being in her company." He spoke, the last part mostly being him letting his usual, over-energetic rambling take over.
Sengoku then decided to shrug his shoulders again before he pushed Subaru towards the Girl. "In that case, you accompany her and I am going to Recon on my own, Let's meet up again in this alley before Sunfall to exchange information."
Before either one of them could comment on his sudden declaration of their ongoing actions, Sengoku turned around and leaped towards the wall of the Alley Corner, climbing it within seconds before racing off on the rooftop he got on to.
Subaru scoffed at the sight and mumbled "Showoff..." Before turning to The Silver-haired Girl again, who stared him down quite intently. Subaru, after some seconds, looked away for a moment, to which Emilia just responded with a declaration of her own. "Aha. You just looked away because of your Guilty Conscience." before slowly stepping closer towards Subaru.
"You sure?" Suddenly came a somewhat deeper voice, and out of seemingly nowhere, a flying, small and admitably very cute Cat materialized, floating next to the Silver-haired girl's shoulders. "Maybe it was just a general male reaction to avoid tension or rudeness, I didn't sense any malice at all."
"That's enough out of you, Puck!" The girl suddenly commanded, while revealing the floating cat's name, then turned her attention back to Subaru, bending forward slightly. "Now listen, I want you to tell me who stole my Insignia!" She ordered while still staring Subaru down.
Subaru could only respond with the honest truth, being... "Yeah, sorry about that but I don't have the slightest clue, to be honest with you."
The two stared silently at one another for a few seconds before the girl's expression suddenly softened up. "oh no, it couldn't be! Did I maybe take a turn or go around the long way?"
Subaru just lightly chuckled before walking just two steps closer to her. "If I were you I'd hurry after her before she gets too far. I could maybe help. My friend did order me to do just that, more or less."
Emilia initially wasn't so sure about wanting to let him help her, but she did have a few questions about him so she decided to let him accompany her. Upon closer inspection, he did seem quite lost, actually. So she decided to press the topic further rather than question their situation. "So, do you have any idea who stole my Insignia?"
"Insignia?" Subaru asked, quite dumbfounded. "You mean one of those Badge things that show your affiliation?"
Emilia ignored the question and kept pressing. "It has a jewel in the middle and is about this big." She said while forming a space between her Index finger and her Thumb, showing the rough, and rather small size of the Insignia she was robbed off.
"Sorry" Subaru started as he raised his hands defensively. "I really have no idea about the Insignia, all I really know is who has it. I remember her face, I can help you look for her, if I see her again I will recognize her for sure!"
Emilia seemed to think about it for a moment before she pouted her lips slightly. "You really are strange... I just can't really give you anything back for your help."
Subaru, smiling at her agreement, just gave her a light thumbs up before he responded. "Well you don't have to! I would gladly help you get your insignia back, it does seem important to you! Besides, I do have every intention on becoming this Story's hero so I gotta make good on my one good deed per day!"
Emilia sighed weakly before regaining her calm composure then looked over at Puck, who looked like he had something to comment on Subaru as well. "I think we take him with us as well. The more shields between you and the Ruffians, the better." He spoke while having this obvious smirk meant to underline his tease, much to Subaru's agitation, who went in on the teasing. "Hey, so a shield is all I am to you?"
Puck and Emilia laughed very weakly at his antics before they then walked off, with Subaru stubbornly remaining at their side.
For the rest of the day, they looked all over for the thief. Subaru even drew a sketch of her face, one that was surprisingly accurate to her looks, but even with visual aid, nobody seemed to know her or have seen her, let alone both. They continued to look all over, went into many different places such as Bars, Taverns, and Emilia had to fordibly stop Subaru from breaking into an abandoned warehouse, scheduled for deconstruction and rebuilding, because it was off-limits, yet Subaru tried to follow a stereotypical villain-trope and assumed the Thief would hide in abandoned buildings. It turned out he was horribly wrong, thought.
After hours of looking, they went to a high spot within the towns center, looking over the area, to which Subaru had to comment on. "Wow, this city is really big. How does someone hide so well in a place like this?"
Emilia, caught slightly off guard by him refering to the Capital as 'City' decided to correct him on it. "This City is in fact the Capital of Lugnica, I can't believe you didn't even know this much." After she spoke, she observed Subaru more carefully, then thought back of their unsuccessful search for the Thief and sighed. "So you have no money, you don't know where you are and you can't even read our Language. I think you might be in an even worse predicament than I am."
Subaru rubbed the back of his head in slight embarrassment while also laughing. This however was interrupted by Puck, who showed up again and suddenly seemed in thought for a moment. Then, Puck lit up and hovered towards Emilia before he spoke out. "Hey, I just noticed, I don't know what to call you. We have been at each other's side for hours but never even shared each other's names!"
Subaru remembered that bit as well after short thinking. Then, he struck a pose, right arm lifted high in the air. "I am Natsuki Subaru! Not only am I absolutely lost, I am broke beyond hope!"
Emilia sighed again before she commented "You really are a strange person..." Then lifted her head slightly because she knew she'd be asked about her own name. True to her expectation, Subaru quickly collected himself. However, Puck ended up introducing himself first. "And I am Puck! Nice to meet yooouuu!" Puck responded while flying towards Subaru's hand, letting Subaru give the Greater Spirit some very nice belly scratches.
Emilia, caught off-guard by how casually Subaru was treating Puck, voiced her surprise. "It is very unusual for someone to touch a Spirit so casually. Where are you from?"
Subaru, while continuing to give Puck some attention, much to Pucks' blissful liking, smiled brightly. "Well, following the course of the map, I come from a small Island to the East."
Thinking about his response, Emilia put a finger on her chin and thought. "But Lugnica is the eastern most Country. There is nothing east of it."
"What? nothing?" Subaru responded in morbid surprise.
"Man, you really are in a hopeless situation there, Subaru." Puck commented before floating to the boy's shoulder.
Subaru meanwhile just looked up at her. "Well... I know Pucks' name, but what about yours?"
The Half-elv turned her head to the side to think for a moment about how she was going to respond to his question, then turned towards him and said. "My name is... Satella."
Puck seemed to be quite shocked by her choice of words, but Subaru was too fixiated with her to notice the Spirit's reaction.
"No last name. Just call me 'Satella'" She added then looked away as she awaited what she believed to be the natural reaction of rejection. However, much to her surprise, Subaru only turned to look at her with a smile and said "Satella, huh? I think that's a great name!"
Puck floated back to her side and into her hair, whispering to the Half elv "Man, you really got some poor taste."
Later, they continued their walk around town where they stumbled upon a small girl who seemed to be very lost. Calming her down thanks to Subaru's slight of hand, they ended up helping her find her Mother and re-unite a family, which did leave them quite satisfied. After that, however, they took a slight de-tour and went towards a small Bridge over a pond to rest for a moment, where they ended up exchanging some more light, mostly teaseful pleasantries. However, this was also where Emilia revealed that she was a Half-elf. Subaru, letting his inner weeb free for a moment again, only praised her on it, which caused them to have a playful back-and-forth bickering before they resumed their search for the Thief.
Continuing their travel, they stumbled upon someone that Subaru met earlier today, being the Apple Merchant. He, of course, berated Subaru for being dead poor. However, his attitude changed very quickly when the child and it's mother from earlier re-appeared and revealed the Merchant was her father. Wanting to show his grattitude, he revealed that their Thief is very likely Felt, someone who is well known in the slums.
After receiving their desired information, the duo headed straight for the Slums, completely forgetting that they wanted to inform Sengoku about the location they were headed from. In their hurry to find the Thief, they completely forgot about him for a moment and instead went straight to their destination.
However, once there, Puck informed them that he couldn't be of any use because of his contract with Emilia, or currently Satella, and de-materialized himself after wishing the pair a good night. Now left on their own, Subaru and Emilia enjoyed some more back-and-forth banter. During which, Emilia tried to ask some lesser spirits about any information, but was direly unsuccessful about it. However, luck seemed to not dry out on them completely, since they stumbled upon one of the residents of the Slums who did decide to help them out. He gave them the direction of 'Old man Roms' Stolen Goods Warehouse.
There, Subaru and Emilia, or currently Satella, had another small banter, which ended with Emilia expressing that she has faith in Subaru returning her Insignia to her. Subaru, smiling contently, entered the Warehouse. After some looking around, he found nothing so far until he heard his foot step on something wet. He would forever regret looking down, for he spotted his foot right ontop of a large puddle of blood. As he looked up, fearful of just what happened, he saw the corpse of a rather large, elderly person against a wall. Blood pouring from his mouth, his eyes betraying the already obvious fact that he was dead. And his right arm was missing.
Scared beyond anything he's known before, Subaru took a step back, only to hear a lustrous voice speak behind him. "Oh, dear, you found that?" It asked, causing Subaru to enter an ever increasing state of Panic. "Well, I have no choice, then" The voice continued. Subaru wanted to just run. He knew if he turns around, he is dead. Yet, he for some reason still tried to turn around rather than just run. "Yes, I have no choice..." The voice continued. As Subaru turned his head just a bit, he suddenly felt a sharp, burning sensation on his stomach just as he was pushed to the ground, rolling onto it before falling on his stomach.
"Ow, that burns..." he barely managed to speak as he tried to push himself up, only to spot large amounts of blood pouring from his abdomen. Seeing this much blood, he knew the wound was mortal and it was a question of moments, maybe even seconds, before he was dead.
The Door to the Warehouse swung open and Satella entered it, sounding slightly concerned. "Subaru? Did something happen? Subaru?" She asked as she approached his general direction.
Subaru, fearful for her life now, tried to warn her. "No... Run... Hurry!"
But it was to no avail. Satella sensed someone behind her and turned around for a moment, but too late, for she too ended up being cut across her entire abdomen, falling right next to Subaru, her left hand landing on a small spot under the moonlight shining through the damaged roof.
"Wait there..." Subaru thought as he reached for Satella's hand with his own, grasping her tightly. "I will... save you!" Were his last thoughts before the world went black for him.
And when he opened his eyes, he was right back at the Alley, sitting next to Sengoku, who caught onto how shocked and spaced-out Subaru looked for a moment, and shook his shoulder to try and shake him out of it.
"Subaru? You there?" Sengoku asked, but as he got no response for a moment, he shook him harder. "Suba-" He asked before suddenly clutching his head as he was starting to be filled with information which awfully resembled memories. Of them in the alley meeting thugs, him scouting the City after they met Emilia, him waiting after sun fall in the Alley, worried for Subaru, thought he would never admit it, And then, running around looking for Subaru before being right back at this Alley.
The two of them, now back in place with their mind, looked at one another, and immediately, both of them thought the same. "Did I... dream all this?"
Sengoku however immediately went to speculations in his mind while also trying to open a conversation with Subaru about their experience. "Subaru...what just happened?"
Subaru, still shocked about everything, looked at his hands before looking back to Sengoku. "I don't... I don't know... I would think it was a bad day dream but... if it were..."
"Then it would be exlusive to you... the timing is way too convenient." Sengoku finished Subaru's thought process before nodding his head. "Before we came back here... What was the last thing you did?"
Subaru turned to Sengoku, wondering if Sengoku could read his mind. "I..." But, upon trying to remember it, Subaru grasped his stomach with both hands and started breathing sporadically and irregularily.
Sengoku immediately knew what this response was. "Subaru!" he shouted and knelt down before the panicking male, holding both his shoulders and straightening Subaru's body. "Slow, deep breaths. In, and out. In, and out!" He commanded and Subaru did as told, slowing his breaths while making them as extended, deep and lengthy as possible, before breathing out in the same rhythm until it became regulated and controlled.
"Good." Sengoku spoke. "Now... try again, but don't rush your memories. Recollect from the start." Sengoku advised, which Subaru listened to and nodded.
In the following minute, Subaru explained his day with Satella and Puck, how they helped a lost girl find her parents, how they exchanged pleasantries and became friendly, how they found the Insignia thief and followed her to the Slums, and how they...
"...Then, someone struck me from behind. Pretty sure with a blade. Next thing I knew, my guts were spilling across the floor, and soon after, so were Satellas... Sengoku." Subaru started and got a much more serious expression on his face. "I was killed... I WILL be killed tonight if I go there alone again..."
Sengoku, processing the information he was given, sighed out while stroking his chin. "I did nothing significant for the night. I only ran around looking for you, so I am pretty sure the trigger for our Reset didn't come from me. If I had to take a guess, I'd say it was your death. But, it was only a one-time occasion, so we cannot confirm for sure. But, if it is true, then it means every time you die, you re-spawn at an earlier setting of the day. In this case, in the valley with me. However... not just you, but also I retain memories from what happened before."
Subaru, looking down as he processed the information, kept trying to control his breathing while listening to Sengoku using his brain. Subaru would usually be jealous of Sengoku's intellect. Not just very sportive and successful in it, but also crazy intelligent, able to easily analyze any situation at a glance, reading people like an open book, triumphing even the next smartest people at intellectual duels. But, right now, he was very glad for it, because the information delivered would most certainly help them...
"So if something goes wrong, I have to die to start over and right it." Subaru then thought out loud, to which Sengoku simply responded with a silent nod, then sat down next to Subaru. "Pretty much."
The two of them spent a moment longer in silence at the Alley before the three thugs came, just as they did before, and just as before, Sengoku beat them to a bloody pulp with a cherry ontop called Blunt Force Trauma to the Head, before returning to Subaru's side.
"A blessing and a curse. Well, at least we now know you DID come with a super power, Shitbird."
Subaru only Tch'd Sengoku's remark before he put both hands against his face. "Sengoku, we have to stop what's going to happen tonight..."
"And if we want to do that, we need much more information than just the knowledge that everyone inside that warehouse will be killed. Matter of fact, if you run to any Guards or any other instituted Militant Force in this town and tell them there's a murder happening tonight, first thing they will ask you is how you know. You really think they will believe it if you tell them you saw it in A future outcome before being looped back a day because you were amongst the victims? We have to approach this situation as carefully and delicatly as possible. Matter of fact, You are gonna have to die one more time AT LEAST just so we know what whatever kills you looks like. Visual information will be of great support. Furthermore, we can't simply claim this whatever will murder people. We have to play at it more subtly. Words such as 'Suspicious looking' and 'Armed and Dangerous' will be more suited here."
Subaru listened to every word as carefully as he could, making sure to mentally note all the information. However, he was very much in disagreement about having to die for information. "So what, am I gonna be used as some sort of Time-Scout now?" He spoke, sounding considerably angrier than he intended to.
Sengoku slowly nodded his head. "Afraid so. We don't know if the time loop applies to me too. I can do the testing as well, however, if it's unsuccessful on me, you will have to die either way. Ultimatedly, it comes down to the same end-result. We have to quite literally tax our lives to prevent the coming deaths. I would suggest we just steal the Insignia back from Felt and return it to Satella before the sun goes down so nobody has to go near there, but then the would-be assassin might just go ahead and kill these people anyway to erase her prints. Or, if they are on the less stable side, they might go on a killing spree to calm down. Which leaves us to only one inevitable pathing. We must figure out who this Assassin is and go as high into the Chain of Authority as possible with substantial evidence of Tonight's Murder to invoke action from the Guards. But if we want to collect evidence, we need to scout our future. There's no way around it that I can think of..."
Subaru cursed himself inwardly as he listened to Sengoku. "Shit... if even he can't think of another way, then it must be serious... Shit... I don't want to experience this again!" He thought to himself.
Almost on Queue, Felt came by moments later and evaded the duo, leaping behind them to the Rooftop of the first building behind the Alley, escaping.
"Wait, shouldn't we-"
"I did tell you already, not an option yet." Sengoku immediately stopped Subaru. "If we steal the Insignia, the Assassin might go on a rampage, or worse, it might not even make a difference. We have to stop this night where it's climax occurs. Now... get ready, Satella is about to arrive. Now, I can do some additional Recon and investigate how this City's Militant structure functions. YOU need to relive this day as close to the original as possible, and this time you have to get a good look at the Assassin."
Subaru looked down with a heavy sigh and depressed eyes, fearful of his death and to relive it again no less. He doubted himself if he could do it. Sengoku, knowing Subaru long enough to know EXACTLY what he was thinking, put one hand on Subaru's shoulder. "Think of it this way. You are the main protagonist of this story. You are destined to live life to the fullest of your own Happy Ending, and so, any scenario that doesn't end in a Happy End, you can forcibly reset. This Ability might be heavy on your mental stability, but the payout is the ultimate sob story. Subaru, this is something only YOU can do, and no one else. Where others succumb to death eternally, you spit in it's face and go back in time to prevent it. This power is yours. Own it, Shitbird."
Subaru, closing his eyes to process these words, nodded after a few seconds, gaining a new-found resolution before standing up, fists balled and raised. "Alright! If that's how it is, let us kick Fate and Death in the nuts!"
Sengoku, smirking at a job well done, mentally pat himself on the back then got up as well. "Here she comes." He said and disappred to the roof behind them again, going a different route to do another Scouting tour, this time for the Military.
Subaru steeled his resolve and looked to the Alley's other end and, seconds later, saw her, standing there with an angry look on her face, approaching. His own expression got equally serious.
"This is it... Satella... I made a promise to save you... no matter how many times I have to die, I will!"
And that concludes Episode 1 of my new Series :D
Please do let me know how you like it so far. Since this is pretty much my first chapter to the story, many things are still open, in development or not even in planning, thus many changes are possible, and updates can always be made. If there is a complaint, please voice it with unfiltered honesty, I will welcome it!
Enjoy your time and I will see you at Episode 2!
