Hey guys, GameQ here. Here is another fanfic I've had in my mind for some time now. But I couldn't write it before because I was too occupied with Time Error. This is my take one what if Soldier teaches Pharah how to rocket jump. So without further to do, I now present How to Fly. I hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: I do not own Team Fortress 2 or Overwatch.
How to Fly
Pharah sighed in frustration as she followed Soldier towards their destination. According to him, rocket jumping was better than her jump jet. She begged to differ, after seeing this 'rocket jump' technique in action. It's a waste of ammo, and clearly hurts the person who dares try it. But unfortunately for her, he also saw her jump jet in action too.
His face looked like he was literally offended, "How dare you have a rocket launcher in your hands and not use it to rocket jump!?" Pharah believed were his exact words.
Afterwards Soldier demanded that she learns how to rocket jump, with him as the teacher. She refused but Soldier insisted. And there she was, couple days later following Soldier so she could learn to rocket jump.
"He's very persistent, I'll give him that." She thought, rolling her eyes. She would be lying though, if she said she wasn't interested in this so called art. It has peaked her interest at bit, despite how dangerous it looked.
"So what exactly would I be getting out of learning how to rocket jump? Just blasting my legs off to get one from place to another? That seems unbeneficial. Rather than hop from one place to another I can simply just fly to my destination without harming myself." Pharah commented while staring a hole through the back of Soldier's helmet.
"Ha! Don't worry about blasting your own legs off, we already have that covered. And rocket jumping is more than just blasting yourself from the floor to the balcony! What you see me do in the battlefield is only a quarter of what rocket jumping really is!"
"Is that so?" Pharah asked.
"There's multiple rocket jumps! Many different kinds! And I'll be the one to teach you. Along with whoever passes by us." Soldier answered.
"Oh, I feel so honored right now…" Pharah said passively, till she noticed the last part of his sentence.
"Wait! 'Along with whoever passes by us'? What does that mean?"
"Hm? Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Where we're going is a place that is very popular for soldiers like me!" Soldier jabbed his thumb to his chest, smiling proudly.
"So it's not going to be just me and you?" Pharah said, sounding a little bit disappointed.
"Negative! Exposing you to more rocket jumpers is necessary!" Soldier replied.
Pharah wanted to argue, but decided not to. This is Soldier she's dealing with, he's so hard headed that helmet of his means nothing to him, without it he can still survive a headshot, he's just wearing because it's part of his uniform.
Soldier made a sharp left turn, Pharah followed through. They were heading towards a doorway that was filled with darkness, Pharah couldn't see anything within the doorway. She then noticed that Soldier wasn't stopping, he was about to enter into the doorway.
"Why is it so dark in there?" Pharah slowed herself to a halt. Soldier stopped just in the middle of the doorway, and turned around.
"This doorway will take us to our destination. All we gotta do is step through." Soldier explained. Pharah stared at him with suspicion, she really didn't want to walk into a dark room, with him of all people. However, Soldier had no clue what was her issue.
"If you want we can hold hands." Soldier merely suggested, raising his hand towards her. Pharah's face slightly turned red from the thought, but she wasn't having any of it.
"As if I'd ever-!"
"Hehehehehe." Soldier chuckled mischievously. "See you on the other side!" Soldier waved as he continued his walk into the dark room, and pretty soon, he vanished from her vision.
"Soldier?...Soldier?" Pharah called out as she edged closer to the doorway, but not getting any response from Soldier. Knowing what she must do, she sighed before walking through the doorway and into the dark room, walking in the same direction Soldier did. As she walked, it got so dark she could no longer see the light from outside. But that didn't matter anymore, because after just a few seconds she blinked and suddenly she was in an entirely different area.
"Welcome to the Jump Map!" Soldier welcomed. Pharah winced as her eyes had to readjust to the sudden bright light. Once her eyes began to see clearly, she was amazed by what she saw next.
This Jump map was huge! There was so much space to roam and fly freely. There were so many obstacles too, with marks of explosions covering them. Then something caught her eyes, another soldier! And he was free falling without a parachute!
Pharah was about to launch herself with her jump jet, but was stopped by a hand on her shoulder. Pharah turned to see Soldier shaking his head, but giving her a reassuring grin and pointed back at the falling soldier. Pharah watched with panic running all throughout her body as the soldier continued to fall, until she watched him do the most incredible thing ever.
The soldier fired away two rockets downward as he fell, he was approaching the floor at an alarming rate, the two rockets he fired following close behind. But just as he landed, miraculously unscathed, he quickly jumped again and fired another rocket to the floor right as soon as the other rockets hit. The combination of all three rockets sent him flying up into the air at incredible speeds.
Pharah's face was in a mixture of awe and wonder, she couldn't believe what she was seeing. Soon the now flying soldier flew all the up to a very high platform, where 4 other soldiers waited for him. Once he landed they all cheered and laughed, congratulating him.
"Hoorah!" Soldier cheered as well, gaining back Pharah's attention. "It's about time that maggot passed that course! I knew him since when he first started in here."
"Really? And how long ago was it since you two first met."
"Oh I'd say about a month or two…maybe more." Soldier began counting with his fingers, trying to figure the exact answer.
"You mean…" Pharah turned back to look at the jump map, and all of its courses. "this could take months?"
"Yes!" Soldier answered. "First thing you should know about rocket jumping! It takes time and effort! One of the main reasons why it takes time and effort is because rocket jumping demands perfection! It will take nothing else! So don't be ashamed if another soldier passes you when you're struggling in a course! He probably spent more time on it than you."
"What do you mean by perfection?"
"You'll find out soon enough, now let's get started!..." Soldier looked at Pharah and the attire she wore. "Actually we may have to get you properly equipped." Soldier mused.
"Wha-what? Why?" Pharah questioned.
"You are not fit for rocket jumping in that gear! And you'll try being sneaky with that pathetic jet of yours I know it! You're going to the locker right now and you're going to put on these!" Soldier threw a spare uniform on top of her along with a pair of boots and a belt, then shoving her into the locker room.
After some time, she finally walked out of the locker. The uniform slightly hanged loose on her, but it still fitted well with the help of the belt around her waist, allowing some of her curved form to show. Though the uniform did feel a bit comfortable, she was not amused. Meanwhile Soldier grinned like he was the happiest man on the planet.
"This isn't funny Soldier…" Pharah growled.
"Heheheheh, kind of is. I've always wondered what you'd look like in our uniform…not bad. You look good in red!" Soldier complimented as he walked around her, examining her. His sudden compliment didn't completely get rid of her sour mood, but it definitely did tone it down a bit.
She began to notice that other soldiers were observing her from the distance, some taking a glance at her before returning back to the practice.
"And now for the finishing touch!" Soldier exclaims, right before slamming a helmet onto her head. "Now you look like a real soldier."
"How are you even able to run around with this helmet?" Pharah was barely able to see anything with the way the helmet was placed on her, in her vision all she saw was Soldier's feet. Readjusting the helmet by tilting it backwards, she was able to see fine.
"Here you go!" Soldier handed Pharah a spare rocket launcher. "Alright you probably do not know how to handle this one, so I'll first teach you how to hold it and how to reload, to fire is pretty self explanatory!"
For the next 20 minutes, Soldier had Pharah go through a series of practices on how to hold it, reload with it, run with it, so on and so forth. Some of the other soldiers had stopped what they were doing to watch, curious of the new soldier woman.
"Perfect! You have gotten the gist of it! Now that's over with we will now start with the very first rocket jump!" Soldier grinned.
"Before we begin Soldier, I have a question."
"What's that?"
"These boots, at the bottom they are covered by metal plates, what is that?" Pharah asked.
"Oh, these are gunboats! Remember when you were complaining about blasting your legs off? These are what will keep that from happening. They make a huge difference! Put you still will feel a sting afterwards, just a warning."
"Obviously! I won't be surprised if either of us dies from this!"
"Ha! We won't have to worry about death in this area! Believe it or not cupcake we are breathing in a healing source! Our injuries will be healed in seconds!" Before Pharah could inquire what he meant, he grabbed one of his fingers and bent it in the wrong direction.
Right after that, the finger glowed then straightened itself out. Soldier flexed his finger to show that it was perfectly fine.
"See!" Soldier exclaimed with an excited grin.
"What is this place?" Pharah mumbled to herself.
"Now without further more interruptions let's start for real this time! We will begin with a standard rocket jump, watch and learn missy!" Pharah stood back as she carefully watched Soldier.
He aimed his rocket directly at his feet, then jumped while simultaneously firing. The result sent him pretty high, right before falling to the ground. He landed with a thud, and Pharah wince when she thought she heard a crack.
"And that is how you perform a standard rocket jumps! Simple as it looks! Just aim down, crouch jump and fire, then you'll go flying."
"Crouch jump?" Pharah gave him a confused look.
"Tuck in your knees when you jump." Soldier explained.
"Oh. Alright then, here I go." Pharah prepared herself. Soldier watched intently.
"I'll be able to see what I'm working with once I see her perform the rocket jump, see how much work needs to be done." Soldier thought as he observed.
Pharah fired and jumped at the same time, but instead of flying upward smoothly and landing on her feet, she ended up flying backwards while doing a couple of backflips before landing roughly on her back.
"Ouch…" Pharah muttered.
The whole jump map almost went silent, since nearly every soldier in there caught the scene. But as soon as the scene was over, they went back to what they were doing. All except for one soldier who busted out laughing, but was silenced when Soldier turned his head towards him, a fiery glare set upon him. He quickly turned back to Pharah with a frown.
"We got a lot of work to do." Soldier thought with a sigh.
*4 hours later*
Pharah's knees gave in and she fell to the floor, her helmet falling off in the process, breathing heavily from exhaustion. While she has been through intense training before, this training however was a category of its own. And despite the fact that any injuries could be healed in this map, Pharah felt pain all over her body.
Her hands ached after gripping the rocket launcher tightly for so long and her legs trembled after having them blasted plenty of times. Her body felt all bruised up from all the times she has failed to land on her legs, and when she accidentally slams herself against the walls or ceilings.
She will give some respect to Soldier now, though she will never tell him it, because rocket jumping is very difficult. True to his words, rocket jumping actually does demand perfection. It all depends on aiming, timing, speed, height, length, strafing, position. If she failed on any of those, she pays the price by needing to start over again.
And Soldier continued to be correct when he said there was so many rocket jumps to be learnt. Wall climbing, speed shots, sync jumping, pogo jumping, surfing, and others she hasn't even had the chance to see. Yet so far, the only two she was able to learn today was the regular rocket jumping and wall climbing, and she barely is able to do them.
She sighed in frustration, she'd like to think of herself as a quick learner but rocket jumping ain't something that can be learnt so easily.
"But when I actually do it properly…wow." She awed. The sense of what feel like freedom surrounds her while she's in the air, the feeling of free falling giving her excitement. Despite the pain she feels, it's worth it.
Soldier's hand came into view of her vision, she looked up to see Soldier offering her help to get up, with a proud grin on his lips. She takes the hand gratefully and lets him pull her up. After he stood her up, he gave her a pat on the shoulder and handed her helmet back to her with a nod.
"Well done Pharah! Although your start was rough and your rocket jumps are still a bit sloppy, you've exceeded by expectations today!" Soldier congratulated. And to Pharah's surprise, even the other soldiers came to her.
"Nice work!"
"Good work!"
"Hoorah!"
"You deserve a medal!"
"Uh…thank you." Pharah said feeling unsure about the sudden attention. Thankfully, they all returned back to what they were doing.
"Welp, time to turn in for today, we can continue another day! You're stuff should still be in the locker room! You can leave the uniform I let you have in there along with the rocket launcher!" Soldier informed. Pharah nodded and walked back into the locker room.
Soldier assumed she went in there to take off the uniform and collect her belongings but moments later she came back out still wearing the uniform and helmet, still equipped with the rocket launcher too. Soldier tilted his helmet back just to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
"Uhh, did you forget to take off the uniform?" Soldier asked.
"No, it's just I've decided to leave them on, I still need to get use to wearing them along with carrying the rocket launcher. And about my gear, I decided to leave them in there. It should be safe there, correct?"
Soldier remained silent while looking at her, for the second time he was surprised by her and her commitment. She stared at him curiously, still waiting for a reply. Soldier noticed and looked away while scratching his chin.
"Affirmative, should be safe and sound in there, it's my locker room after all."
"…What was that about?" Pharah asked.
"What's that?"
"You paused for a moment, why?" Pharah asked again.
"Oh…it's just you surprised me. Didn't expect you to continue wearing it." Soldier explained.
"Ah, well I figured I could still wear them so I could get use to it and…it does feel a bit comfortable." Pharah whispered the last part, while tilting her helmet down to cover her eyes.
Although she whispered the last part, Soldier still heard it. He paused again to look at her before giving another grin, then marching towards the exit.
"Let's move out soldier!" Soldier shouted, Pharah moved fast to catch up with him. Soon the two exited the jump map and returned back to where they were before. Afterwards, the two parted ways so they could go back to their own base.
Soldier had no problem returning to his base and was greeted by his coworkers, Pharah on the other hand had no problem returning to her HQ either but…well she forgot to that there may be one issue with wearing Soldier's uniform.
"Pharah…wha…what are you wearing?" Tracer asked, fighting to keep herself from laughing but was letting out giggles. Pharah took off the helmet that Soldier gave her, and rolled her eyes.
"This has nothing to do with you Lena, mind your own business." Pharah replied as she continued her walk towards her room.
"Perhaps I should have left the uniform back there." Pharah mused, starting to regret her decision.
"Oh come on please do tell! I promise not to laugh!" Tracer begged as she trailed after her, still letting out a couple bits of laughter.
"You say that when you're already laughing." Pharah muttered. Tracer finally lost the fight and burst out laughing. Mercy was the next to see her, a smirk grew on her face the moment she saw her.
"I take it you actually went to train with Soldier for this so called 'rocket jumping'?" She asked. Pharah sighed before replying.
"What choice did I have Dr. Ziegler? You saw how determined he was." Pharah explained.
"I guess you have a point. So then how did it go?" Mercy asked. Pharah stopped for a moment.
"It was…thrilling." She genuinely replied. "At first I thought it was a waste of time but then once I finally got into it, it was incredible. Even though the training is excruciating, I feel that it's worth it."
The two girls were stunned by Pharah's reply, just early before she was cursing Soldier's name for forcing her into rocket jumping, but now she almost seems grateful.
"Wow Pharah, you've really changed your mind about it huh?" Tracer said.
"If Pharah enjoyed her time in rocket jumping, I wonder how Junkrat is doing?" Mercy wondered aloud. Pharah visibly showed confusion.
"Wait, what about Junkrat?"
*Somewhere very far away*
Demoman used two sticky bombs to blast himself towards a floating platform.
"Ahh that's the way you do it lad!" Demoman said, he looked back down at Junkrat, only to gasp when he saw his new student shoot out 4 sticky bombs.
"Here I come!" Junkrat shouted followed by a hysterical laughter before jumping and detonating the bombs.
Because the fact that they were in a map designed to allow demomans and soldiers to use their weapons without getting damaged, Junkrat survived this. But he wish he didn't when he realized he was going to high, and face planted into the ceiling, practically kissing it before falling all the way back down to the floor with a loud thud.
"Ouch…" Was all he was able to say.
Demoman, after watching the entire display, did the most reasonable thing to do.
"PFFFFT! OOOOOOOOOOHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Demoman's laugh echoed throughout the entire map.
The End.
