Could it be possible? Was the sound that they were both hearing real and genuine laughter over dinner? No long pauses or awkward smiles, but a realness between the two former rangers. Kimberly's laughter was infectious, causing Tommy to release a series of his own as they reminisced and shared their lives over the last several years.
The letter and the last ten years of hurt had been thrown in the ocean, washed away in an attempt of something new. That didn't matter anymore, and for the first time in a long time, Kimberly didn't know what the future would hold for her. She had been calculated the last ten years, strategically planning every moment of her future: marriage by 30, kids by 31, another by 33, expand her business, move into a huge house by 35. All of that planning that she used to constantly do seemed so frivolous. None of that was real, at least not yet. Who cares if things didn't work out the way they were supposed to? Why did it matter to have everything in order and never once release any sort of the control? People didn't live like that.
Tommy… he was real. He was right in front of her, gorgeous as ever, as she wondered if her future was with him. The boy that broke her heart, and fueled a rage and determination that she held on to for 10 years, was nothing like she thought he would be. While he had been funny and charming when they were younger, the man that he was now was smooth as hell and charismatic, making her nearly lost in the lust. It also didn't help that Skull was a master at composing and was clearly putting her in a flirtatious mood. The wine helped a bit too.
Dinner had been coming to an end as they were lost in conversation. Course after course had been served, leaving them deliciously satisfied. They would have to thank Trini later.
The former white ranger caught a glimpse of Kimberly surveying the room, landing on the couples on the dance floor, slowly and tenderly holding each other as they swayed to the rhythm of Skull's melodies.
Tommy was never a great dancer when he was younger. He would be dragged along to the school dances by Kimberly and then later Katherine, but he just could never get into the groove of things. He could choreograph the perfect battle, but when it came to dancing, he was lost. That was until he met a latin dancer at the club Zack had dragged him along to. She was gorgeous, but he was more so focused on the way she knew how to move her body. While they dated very briefly, she taught him the ropes when it came to dancing. He was now, a professional in all of the arts. And he couldn't wait to show Kimberly.
Tommy stood up, offering Kimberly a hand, "Dance with me."
He couldn't possibly be serious.
She followed the trail to his hand, a mischievous grin forming, "What? You're not even going to ask?"
Kimberly took it anyway as she stood from her seat. She couldn't turn him down even if she wanted to.
Tommy leaned forward, pressing his forehead to hers. She would be the death him. "Please?" He asked with a grin matching hers.
She nodded against him, releasing a light squeal when he pulled her in closer and onto the dance floor.
The other couples around them had melted away, as the two focused their attention on only each other. Kimberly slowly lifted her left arm to rest on Tommy's broad shoulder, the other gently clutched by his hand on his chest. To say that she was taken away by the firmness of his chest was an understatement. There was no comparison to the slender frame of his high school days. He had grown absolutely everywhere. If there was one thing she knew for certain, she loved when a man took care of himself and his body.
He stared into her deep brown eyes, becoming more enamored by her with every breath that he took. What was so different about Kimberly wasn't that she was simply beautiful, she was so much more than that. It was her attitude towards life, how she has always been able to handle herself in any and all situations. She wasn't with him all of those years ago because she needed him, quite the contrary, she didn't need anyone. She was with him because she wanted to. Kimberly could clearly take care of herself and he never dreamed of interfering with that, only when she asked. She wasn't the damsel in distress like some thought, she deliberately called out for him because she knew it would boost his ego. He had seen her take a pack of putties by herself without even disturbing a strand of hair, she didn't need him to help her. But he was her willing slave when she called out to him, standing straight at attention to follow her every command.
Kimberly's eyes fluttered closed as she took in the aroma of his cologne. The delightful scent that was hypnotizing her to no end. Even now she knew she could live happily in his arms, dancing to a never-ending melody. She swayed with him to the delicate tune, realizing just how fucking good he was. He was no longer that teenage boy that would occasionally step on her toes. She rested her head on his chest, suddenly realizing just how much taller he had gotten. Even in heels, her head no longer rested where it used to. He was like a new man.
If the ship went under, Tommy knew he would go down with a smile. Being here with Kimberly, with her in his arms, was Christmas morning. Nothing had ever felt so good. At least not since the last time they had been together.
"You know, you took my breath away when I first saw you walk in?" Tommy whispered in her ear.
The grip of his hand on her lower back tightened, bringing her closer to him as they swayed together. There was something simply enthralling about how her feminine body felt up against him. When her curves brushed against his hand, he swore he had died. She was sensational.
Kimberly chewed her lip tenderly, trying to digest his words, "So you were watching me?"
How could he not? She radiated light. Even if she didn't ask for it, his attention was always on her.
Her voice was soft as silk. She caught him. Nothing could get past her.
Tommy smiled across her temple, "I guess I was."
"Why didn't you go up to me?" She returned, running a dainty hand on the nape of his neck.
She found it bare, remembering how she would spend hours tangled in what was once there. Even now the memory of her teenage years seemed to flood back. Times were simpler then. He was hers and she was his, and it was them against the world. Late nights of teleporting into each others room while their parents slept weren't forgotten. The former pink ranger was almost giddy remembering getting reprimanded by her mother when she disappeared one night. Ah, to be young and in love.
Tommy attempted everything to maintain his suave persona, trying with all of might to tame the drumming in his chest. He simply couldn't and as sure she was in his arms, he knew she could hear it pounding away carelessly. He hadn't felt this nervous around a woman in years. There was just something about her that felt right.
He trembled beneath her touch, his eyes meeting hers, "You weren't the only one that was speechless."
She didn't try to hide the creeping blush on her high cheekbones. Kimberly was done hiding, done trying to please an unattainable perfection that was embedded in her brain. Real life wasn't like that.
"It took everything in me to walk up to you."
He meant that with every fiber in his being. Seeing the ghost from your past isn't easy, trying to get the courage to go up to them is even more difficult. He needed her to know she affected him as much as he affected her.
Things would be different from now on and that was a vow he would die trying to keep.
They were utterly lost in the moment, content in the bliss that was each other. Completely absorbed in the intimate swaying between the two. They could have sworn the whole evening had been a private dinner for two.
Tommy surprised her by subtly dipping her, evoking a giggle from the former pink ranger
"Who knew you could dance," She told him just shy of a whisper.
"There's still so much you don't know about me."
She smiled against him, bringing back the sun, "Is that an invitation to find out?"
Tommy certainly hoped so. Whatever ended up happening between the two of them, he at least hoped that it would include having her in his life. Now that he had her back, he wasn't letting go.
He tipped her chin up with his hand, his lips a breath away from hers, "Always."
It was the moment she had been anticipating all evening. His lips against hers to seal the deal, but when he pulled back without actually making contact, she didn't attempt to hide her disappointment.
Maybe it wasn't the right time for him yet, so she shook her head, bringing things back to a lighter feel, "Do I want to know who taught you this?"
He pondered for a moment before deciding against it, "She doesn't matter. All I see is you."
Tommy wasn't oblivious to Kimberly's sudden change in demeanor. He wanted to kiss her and he almost did, but there was something nagging in his head. If they were going to do this then he was going to do this right. Lay everything out in the open and hope that she accepts all of him. He was done letting life pass him by. She was exactly who he wanted, probably who he always wanted but was too stubborn to admit. If his future didn't have Kimberly Hart, then he would have to find one where it did. Because from now on, her lips are the only he'd kiss.
When he heard the tell-tale sign that the song was coming to an end, Tommy felt a tinge of panic. It couldn't be over. Not yet. He turned to Skull as he was finishing off another one of his masterpieces, throwing him wild eyes and a signal from his hand to continue playing.
Skull fumbled in an attempt to keep playing, trying with all of his might to ignore the curious gazes from the rest of the dinner guests.
Kimberly caught Tommy's reflection in a mirror off to the side, a flutter building in her belly.
"I saw that," She told him, a smirk upon her lips.
He was caught red handed and all he could do was chuckle. "I'm sorry," He told her, his face becoming more red by the second. "I.. I just wanted a reason to hold you longer."
Her hand traveled to his cheek, gently moving to brush his lips with her thumb, familiarizing herself with them again, "You don't need a reason."
Kimberly's eyes searched his, finding warmth within. When her lips parted in anticipation, she decided to take matters into her own hands. After all, she didn't get this far in life without speaking her mind.
"Kiss me," she told him, lips plump and ready.
He unconsciously licked his lips after being seductively enticed by her. It was never a question of if he wanted to because he did.. so badly, but he couldn't. Not yet, at least. There was something still left to say.
Tommy caught her by surprise as he released his hold on her.
"Come on," He said beckoning towards the door that lead to the deck, "Theres something I have to tell you."
