Author's note:To clear some things up before you being reading.
I am aware that the beginning chapters of this story will sound similar to another one on here titled Rare Species. Before anyone goes accusing me of copy pasting, The author had gotten the ideas from their friends who most likely saw my work on other sites like a03. The author and I have since discussed this problem and have come to an agreement that their story and mine were different enough. If you still think there is a problem, feel free to PM me and we can continue to talk about it in private.
With that out of the way, here are some other things to be aware of.
This is a reader fic. Tags for that aren't existent currently, so fair warning if you decide to continue past this point. Again, the beginning chapters will look similar to the ones found in Rare Species, with minor differences.
"Well, that could've gone better…" You mutter to yourself as you enter the living room. It was dark, and your eyes hadn't adjusted to the change in light level. Stumbling around in the dark, you flicked the light switch, bathing the room in light. You sigh as you pull off your ripped shirt, narrowing your eyes at the bloodstains and cuts. With a groan, you reach over to grab a lighter. With a few clicks, you burn the shirt, grabbing the air freshner on a nearby shelf afterwards. You hear footsteps come down from a staircase, and a soft voice echoes across the room.
"[Name]-san? Back so soon?" You turn to see your boss, a relatively old (your words, not hers) fox leaning over the railing, eyes blinking slowly from sleep. You nod, walking over and guiding her back up the steps.
"Yes Ms. Sakura. Though I wish they didn't struggle as much as they did." You say to her as you watch her settle back into the bed. She yawns, looking at you with those eyes of hers.
Always calculating, even when tired.
"We'll talk about it tomorrow then, for now, please see yourself out." With a nod, you turn for the door, shutting it and walking back down to the living room. You grab one of the many bandage rolls out of the cabinet, wrapping up the few cuts that were still bleeding, before settling yourself on the couch and closing your eyes.
"[Name]! [Name]! Come on, wake up you stupid…" You feel a claw poking you in your shoulder, and you bat it away with a grumble.
"Gimme a few more minutes…" You hear a groan, and hear footsteps walk away, then felt something slam into your stomach. With a wheeze you sit up and your eyes snap open.
"What the hell was that for?" You say, angry at being woken up. Ms. Sakura simply points to the television that was on, and you turn to see the news reporting on recent events. In big bold letters, the words CHERRYTON MURDER scrolled by slowly. You blink, turning back to the fox, a question forming on your lips.
"That's sad and all, but what's that got to do with me?" You say, stretching as huffs.
"That murder was reportedly done by a carnivore."
"Right, and?"
"The victim was a herbivore." That comment had gotten your attention. A murder of an herbivore by a carnivore would definitely stir up tensions in the town. You give your attention, knowing that this would be serious.
"And what am I supposed to do about it?" She tosses you a new shirt, along with the rest of your gear.
"Your next mission, is figuring out who was the killer. Your second," she hands you a document "is to try and find the leader of the Shishigumi". You read the file over, dressing yourself and getting up with a groan.
"Darn, and I was looking forward to a slow day…"
"I'll make you some tea when you get back, now stop complaining and go!" She pushes you out of the house, shutting the door with a click.
"...I have the keys to the house, you know."
Cherryton Academy was certainly living up to its elite status, as you had found out by taking a mini-hike to get to the dang place! You gasp as you see the school cresting over the hill. Making your way down to the school, you are stopped by the security guard posted just outside of the main gates.
"Excuse me, but are you a student here? You don't look familiar…" You click your tongue in irritation. There was no way you could fake being a student here. You were too different. You sigh as you realize what you were going to do to this poor guard. Feigning a look of shock, you quickly duck, your movement causing the guard to turn around, and that's when you struck.
Quickly getting up, you hit part of his neck, causing him to stiffen, then fall limp. You catch him with some difficulty, darting your eyes around to make sure no one saw. Half carrying, half dragging, you move him back to his little post, setting him on the chair and covering his face with a magazine depicting herbivores in a...less conservative light. You slip back out, letting yourself through the gates.
"Ms. Sakura's not gonna be happy about that…"
You moved through the halls quickly, ignoring the hushed whispers of students as you made your way towards the room where the murder had happened. Walking up a flight of stairs, you came upon a practically silent hall. You gave a low whistle.
"Huh, that's a change." Walking over the door where the murder took place, you spy a bunch of gifts left at the entrance, all of varying quality. There's a note, a short message reading Rest in Peace, Drama club. Your mouth is set in a thin line, and it hits you that you're about to intrude on what's probably a forbidden area of the school. You shake those thoughts out of your head.
"Well, sorry about this, but I have to know why you died." You grab the knob, turning it slowly. Before you can open the door, a hand grabs your wrist.
Instantly, your reflexes kick in, and you elbow someone in the chest, forcing their hand off. You spun around, placing your forearm against their neck and shoving them towards the closest wall. Your eyes stare back at ones wide in shock. The adrenaline wears off, and you blink. You let them go, rubbing the back of your neck.
"Jeez, don't scare me like that!"
"I should be asking you that? Who the hell gives that kinda reaction from a wrist grab!?"
"Sorry, sorry. When people make your life hell, you learn to adapt." Now that you're in a better state of mind, you take a closer look at who you had just assaulted. It was a grey wolf, probably a good head taller than you. He has a ragged appearance to him, though you know that looks can be deceiving. He gives you a confused look, tilting his head.
"Who are you anyways, I don't think I've seen you before." You cough, looking away from him.
"Er, that's kinda hard to explain…"
"I have time." You give him a half hearted glare.
"Look, as much as I would love to entertain you, I have to get going. If you really want to meet up later, head for the Cafe down the block. Anyways bye!" You give him a smile, dashing off before he can even get in a word. When you turn the corner, your smile dips back into a neutral frown you had conditioned yourself into doing.
"Damn, guess I'll have to try again later…"
Legosi watched as the stranger left in a hurry, blinking at the speed he took off at. Shaking his head, he walked back towards the door, dropping a fresh bouquet of flowers down among the many gifts left. While kneeling, he caught the faint scent of something lingering. While the crew that had discovered the scene of the crime had done their best to clean the blood off, there were still some lingering aromas that could be smelt through the door. This one was different though. Legosi took another breath, and realized what it was.
Blood, relatively fresh still.
