AJ looked up as Macey entered the lobby. The green eyed brunette was wearing sunglasses and a hat to hide who she was. She took off both items as she entered the empty lobby. It was late night and she had just come back from one of her shows.
"Good evening, AJ," she smiled.
"Ma'am," he nodded at her. "I think it's more like goodnight. It's after midnight."
"Yeah, you're right. It ran late tonight," she laughed.
"Was it a good show tonight?" He asked.
"Yes, the crowd was great," she said.
Macey was a dancing magician. AJ had been lucky enough to get a night off to see one of her shows. She was funny, amazing and talented as she danced around on stage while performing magic tricks. She was booked for two months to perform in Las Vegas. So far she had been there for three weeks at the hotel where he worked.
"Ah, here we go," she said.
The elevator pinged and the door opened.
"See you around, AJ," she said.
"Have a good night, ma'am," he said.
"How many times must I tell you?" She giggled. "Call me Macey. Ma'am makes me sound old."
"Have a good night, Macey," he corrected.
She stepped into the elevator and the door closed. She leaned back against the wall. She was all the way up on floor 21 so it would take a short while. She looked up to see the numbers as she passed the floors. She started smirking as she reached floor 12. It would jump from 12 to 14. This hotel was superstitious and didn't have a floor 13. Something she had experienced in a few other hotels before.
The elevator suddenly stopped and the number 13 was on the display. Her smile dropped. This made no sense. The door opened and she stared into a badly lit hallway with something black on both sides. She slowly stepped out of the elevator and touched it. She realized it was snow. Black snow. As if hell had frozen over as the old saying went.
"Help!" A female voice yelled.
"Hello?" Macey called.
She crept further into the hallway. It felt like eyes were staring at her from the walls even though she was alone.
"This is a bad idea, Macey," she spoke lowly to herself. "You're hallucinating. Or dreaming. You must have passed out in the elevator. You have been very tired the last few days. Yes, that's it. It's just a dream. Just a fucking dream."
It was a short hallway that ended with a longer hallway at the end where she could decide to turn either left or right. Both of them looked the same. Badly lit, black snow, hot and cold at the same time, giving her an uneasy feeling inside that made the hair on her arms stand up.
Behind her the elevator pinged. She turned around to see the door was closed. She heard the elevator move away. She bit her lip nervously and looked down the left hall before deciding to move down it. She went to the first door and peeked inside. Her jaw dropped at the blue haired woman hanging on an upside down cross. Her blue hair reached the floor but that wasn't the worst part. The woman's mouth had been sewed shot. Her eyes were opened with a fearful look, pleading for Macey to help her.
"Get back here!" An angry male voice yelled. "I'm not finished with you yet!"
"Help!" That same female voice as before.
Macey tumbled backwards and looked down the hall. Several doors down a short, blonde woman with pink dyed ends came sprinting out. A monster of a man came following right behind, grabbing the small woman around the waist and lifting her straight up in the air. The woman kicked and screamed but he didn't even seem to notice it. His eyes were locked on Macey.
"There you are," he grinned. "I've been waiting for you."
"Wake up!" Macey hissed at herself.
"This is not a dream," he laughed. "Come play with Braun. You know you want to. Come to daddy."
Macey started to walk backwards. The monster, apparently named Braun, dropped the small woman on the floor. He started walking towards Macey, slowly walking faster for each step he took. She turned around and sprinted back towards the elevator, almost knocking her fist into the button in panic.
"Get back here!" He yelled.
"Come on!" She growled at the elevator. "Come on, you piece of shit!"
She looked over her shoulder to see the giant man turn the corner. The elevator pinged behind her. She jumped in and pressed a random button. The man roared and started running towards the elevator as the door closed. His shoulder rammed into the closed door, and she fell backwards into the wall in fear. The elevator started moving down. She looked at the panel and saw she had hit the button for the lobby. As soon as the door opened, she ran to the counter and slammed her hands down on it which made AJ jump back in surprise.
"What the fuck is up there?" She screamed.
"Up where?" He asked.
"On the 13th floor!" She screamed.
He sighed and shook his head. He actually looked sad.
"You went there?" He asked.
"Not by choice," she answered. "Are you running some sick version of Hostel up there? What the hell did that blue haired woman do to you?"
"Wait, you actually saw someone?" He asked. "Come with me."
She followed him to a small room in the back. He sat down in front of a laptop and started clicking his way into some files.
"You saw a blue haired woman?" He asked.
"Yes," she answered.
"As far as I know, only one blue haired woman ever disappeared here," he said. "Sasha Banks."
He turned the laptop around and she looked at a footage of the blue haired woman inside the elevator.
"That's her," she said.
"Keep watching," he said.
She watched as the elevator went up. As it reached floor 12, there seemed to be a glitch where the light went out. When it came back on, the woman was gone and the elevator was at floor 14.
"What happened?" She asked.
"What always happens," he sighed. "No one knows. We just know there's some invisible floor 13 that was never built. It doesn't exist. But sometimes it picks someone and swallows them, and no can find them. As far as I know, 103 people have gone missing so far. We got footage of most of them. Security cameras weren't invented until 1942, and we didn't get them until 1965. All footage is the same as with Sasha. There's a glitch between floor 12 and 14, and they're gone. Police has searched the entire hotel countless times. There's never any trace of them."
"I saw another one too. A short, blonde woman. She was trying to escape," she said.
He clicked his way around the program and filtered out anyone but blonde women.
"Take a look," he said.
She clicked her way through the footage until she recognized the woman who had been screaming for help.
"That's her," she said.
"Alexa Bliss," he said. "That was maybe 20 years ago."
"That's not possible. She hadn't aged," she said.
He sighed again and took her hand.
"We all got our theories about that place. If you ask me, I think a gateway to hell is up there somehow. It picks you out either randomly or because you have something it likes, and then you disappear. It never touches workers of the hotel. It's like it has a weird way of thanking us for feeding it by letting us be," he said.
"I've been here three weeks. If it picked me, why wait? Why not take me the first day?" She asked.
"Have you ever been alone in the elevator before?" He asked.
"Yes," she paused. "Or maybe not. I don't remember."
"I bet you haven't. It waited for the right moment. You came back later tonight. For the first time you rode up alone," he said.
"I was staying behind to meet some fans," she mumbled. "Fuck!"
He glanced over at the computer that had the paused image of Alexa. Just another one gone missing. He always wondered what happened to them. He looked back at her and patted her hand before letting go of it.
"Take my advice. Don't go on the elevator alone. Take the stairs," he said.
"You want me to take the stairs to the 21st floor?" She asked.
"Or take the elevator to floor 12, then get out and walk up to floor 14 and get back on. Just don't pass those two floors. It wants you. You can't fight it," he said.
"Maybe I can," she smirked. "Come with me."
She walked back out in the lobby. The elevator was still there. She hit the button and it opened instantly.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
She grabbed his shirt and pulled him into the elevator. She hit the button for floor 21 and the door closed.
"What the hell are you trying to do?" He hissed.
"You said it never touches workers. Let's see what it'll do. It knows that we both know about it. This might fuck it up," she said.
They both held their breath as they reached floor 12. The lights suddenly started flickering like crazy and didn't stop until they reached floor 14.
"We angered it," he said lowly.
She nodded her agreement. They had both felt it as they passed it. Something was angry. They rode up in silence to floor 21. The door opened and she stepped out.
"Don't ever do that to me again," he said. "I'm not gonna play a part in this and risk my own life. We just got a warning. I suggest you listen to it. Don't fucking ride the elevator alone past that point."
The door closed and the elevator moved down again. She knew he would be safe in there alone. Whatever was hiding down there, it didn't touch hotel staff. She was the target. And then it suddenly dawned on her. AJ hadn't mentioned anyone ever coming back from that place. For some reason she had made it out. That had to mean something. Something she would look further into the next day.
