I woke up and checked my watch, it was 6:00 and barely anyone was awake. I slipped out of the auditorium with my clothes and went to the locker room to shower. I got dressed in my normal outfit, which consisted of a black shirt with only one sleeve, my fingerless gloves with weighted knuckles, a pair of black three-quarter legs, silver thigh highs, and black and red steel toed boots. After getting dressed, I partially shifted my right arm, the one without the sleeve, so that it had black fur and claws. Of course my clothes weren't made of normal cloth, as Ruby had taken me to the same clothing shop she and Yang went to, to get their combat outfits. It was always annoying trying to get my tail through the small hole in the back of my pants.
"You can come out now." I didn't know the person, but based on their scent they were a cat faunus. It took a second, but she dropped down from on top of the lockers. She had black hair and amber eyes while a bow was covering her ears, only obvious by the occasional twitching they did. She didn't seem disturbed by the wolfish arm, but she probably thought it was my semblance.
"Should have known you would smell me." She fell silent and just stared at me warily.
"Is there a reason you were watching me?" She blushed slightly.
"I was going to ask all the other faunus in our year not to tell anyone else that I'm a faunus?" I couldn't stop the sigh of relief.
"I'm going to be honest, I thought you had a problem with me, and I'm really not that good at confrontations. Unless it's a fight, I've always been good at that."
"That's nice and all, but will you keep my secret?" It was my turn to blush.
"Oh yeah, of course. I'm not judging you, but why are you hiding?" She scowled.
"Faunus aren't always treated the best, and I don't want to deal with that here." I nodded in understanding.
"That's fair." She didn't say anything else, merely jumping back onto the lockers and leaving the room through the vents. "That was strange." I checked my watch again, it was 6:45. Ruby and Yang wouldn't be up for another half an hour at least, and I wasn't sure when the others would wake up. "Might as well get some breakfast." I made my way to the cafeteria. There were a few people in the room, most of them too old to be students so I assumed they were teachers. At the bar I filled a tray with sausage, eggs, toast, and a blueberry muffin, and I got a bottle of orange juice. Luckily the cost of food was covered with the tuition, which Tai-yang paid for me.
" , I'm surprised to see you awake." I nearly choked on the sip of orange juice as Ozpin appeared behind me. No sound or any sign of him approaching me, just there. After I recovered I was able to respond.
"I've always been an early riser sir." His presence reminded me of Dumbledore, not only in restrained power but in the feeling that he deserved respect. "Especially when I'm surrounded by people I don't know." He sat down on the other side of the table, with only a cup of what I could smell was hot cocoa.
"I find what you've done to your arm intriguing, especially considering you stated your semblance was the absorption of energy." I did my best to come up with a quick, and believable, lie.
"Is it not normal for faunus to be able to turn into an animal? My friends and I have always been able to do that so I didn't think it was worth mentioning." He raised his eyebrow as he took a sip, and I took the chance to take a few bites of sausage.
"No, in fact I have never seen a faunus who could turn into an animal, nor many who would want to." I hummed in a non response. "If it's not too much to ask, could I see you transform fully?" I heard the sound of running, so I wasn't surprised when someone else appeared behind me.
"I would also like to see this transformation, for science." It was a green haired man who had probably already had way too much coffee based on how he was nearly vibrating as he stood there.
" , this Bartholomew Oobleck. He prefers to be called doctor."
"Well I didn't get my doctorate to be called professor, did I Oz?" They both turned to me expectantly, and I finished the last of my breakfast. I stood up and shifted, seamlessly transforming into a black and red wolf. I sat on my haunches.
"Interesting. Have you kept your mind?" I nodded and let out a loud bark, which got the attention of some of the other teachers, including Goodwitch.
"Ozpin, Bartholomew, why is there a wolf in the building?" She smacked her hand with her riding crop.
"Glynda, surely you can recognize the younger ." Goodwitch glared for a second before sighing and picking me up with her semblance. I yelped and transformed back, leaving only my right arm shifted. She nearly dropped me in her surprise, and I heard her mutter under her breath.
"She has magic." Goodwitch set me down gently. "I apologize , I was not aware you could do such a thing. I will update your file accordingly." She grabbed Ozpin by the arm and dragged him out of the cafeteria, clearly holding back from saying something.
" , would you mind terrible if I borrowed you over the weekend to discuss your ability? I'm interested in the applications this could have, as well as if other people could be taught it." I agreed and he zoomed out of the cafeteria. As I saw Ruby enter the room, I decided that I needed some alone time. I left through a door that led outside the building to go meditate for a while.
We all lined up on metal pads in front of the cliffs. Ozpin began to speak.
"For years, you have trained to become warriors, and today, your abilities will be evaluated in the Emerald Forest." Goodwitch started speaking as Ozpin sipped his cocoa.
"You have probably heard rumors about the assignment of teams. Well let us put an end to your speculation. These teammates will be assigned to you, today." Ozpin spoke back up.
"That being said, the first person you make eye contact with will be your partner for the next four years."
"I told you so!" An overly excited voice attempted to whisper, I resisted the urge to look at her.
"After you have partnered up, make your way to the northern end of the forest. You will be monitored and graded throughout the duration, but none of our instructors will intervene. At the northern end of the forest you will find a set of ruins with relics in them. We will regard the item, as well as your standing, and grade you appropriately. Are there any questions?"
"Uh… I have a question." The boy was ignored.
"Very well let's begin." I was one of the first people to be launched into the forest. As I fell I brought my magic to the surface before shooting forward like a missile. When I hit the ground I vapourized a lone beowolf.
"Now to find the ruins." I began my trek through the forest, easily dispatching a few more beowolves before there was a strange rustling in the bushes behind me. I could smell who it was. "Come on out Luna." She stepped into my line of sight, smiling as she caught my eyes.
"You really had Ruby worried this morning when she couldn't find you." We fell into sync with each other as we continued to walk in the direction of the ruins.
"I'll apologize to her later." After several more minutes of walking, killing a few weak grimm along the way, we reached the ruins. Yang and the cat faunus from earlier were already there.
"Amber, where were you this morning? We were worried when we couldn't find you." I dodged her hug and she crashed to the ground.
"I needed some time for myself, so I went to the garden." Yang looked confused as she got up.
"There's a garden?" I refrained from rolling my eyes, barely. At that point several things happened. Ruby fell from the sky, getting slammed into by a screaming blonde before hitting the ground. A ginger rode an ursa into the clearing, followed by a bored looking guy with pink eyes. A redhead was tossed at us by a Deathstalker, Weiss calmly stepped off of a glyph that she was using as an elevator to get out of the sky, and Nevile and Susan ran out of the woods with a Beringle on their tails. A Nevermore was circling above us.
"Who has some Ice dust?" Weiss, the cat faunus, and the redhead each had some on them. "I'm going to have to use that to buy us some time, if that's okay?"
"Of course." Weiss said.
"My pleasure." Cat faunus replied.
"Be careful." This was the redhead. I drew Glacius and poured Weiss's and the redhead's powdered dust on the blade, and inserted the crystal that the cat faunus gave me into a slot at the bottom of the handle. With practiced ease I tapped into my magic and glared at the Beringal and the Deathstalker that were quickly approaching. I heard a gasp from someone, though I ignored it so as not to lose focus. They were nearly on top of me, I heard Yang shouting at me to run, and I spoke a single word.
"CONSTO!" A massive wave of freezing wind shot out of the axe, obscuring everything in front of me. When it died down the two grimm were revealed to be frozen in a block of ice.
"How did you do that‽ And why did your eyes glow‽" The ginger was right in my face, and I almost decked her before her pink eyed friend pulled her back.
"That won't hold them for long, we need to get moving." Indeed even as I spoke cracks were starting to appear in the ice.
"Ruby, Jaune, and I have grabbed relics." Luna said. "We can go." As one we turned, dodging a barrage of feathers the Nevermore sent our way.
"Why are there such powerful grimm here? Isn't an Elder Deathstalker, a Giant Nevermore, and a Beringal just a bit much for initiation? Can anyone distract that damn bird‽" The ginger smiled and turned around, pulling her weapon off her back. I realised it was a grenade launcher when she shot several of them at it. Two loud roars told us that the Deathstalker and Beringal had freed themselves.
We reached a bridge, and Luna pulled Susan, Nevile, and me to the back of the group.
"We're the only ones that can take out the gorilla. You three transform and I'll provide support when needed." We didn't bother to question her, shifting as fast as we could. It was painless as always, but I actually turned into my full form, which was several times bigger than what I had shown Professor Ozpin. After all, a Direwolf is much bigger than your average grey wolf. I had the biggest transformation of all of us, the exact opposite of my (mostly) human form (Even Luna was taller than me),though I wasn't too much bigger than Nevile's form.
Nevile was your typical Kodiak Bear, though he was blonde in colour rather than brown. And Susan was a bit bigger than a normal honey badger, not by much, and was a dark shade of red instead of black. Luna pulled out a staff, the crystal at the top glowing dangerously.
"Come on Mojojojo, let's dance." How did Luna even know that reference?
