The many agents silently walked Loki to his cell. His chains clanking as he walked in the middle of the group of men. People that were around stared as they passed.
The doors slid open to where Loki was to be held. His interest soon peeked when they locked him in the cell that he wasn't alone. Across the room, another person was locked away in an identical cell. She stood before the clear wall that made up one of the four walls to the cell. Her eyes followed them in everything they did. When they left leaving Loki and the stranger the only two in the room alone, their eyes locked.
After a few seconds, the girl smiled and went to her book that was left on the cot. Loki kept watching her out of curiosity. He couldn't fathom how the women before him were any kind of threat to anyone. She looked like someone he could easily manipulate like everyone else on this silly little planet.
Not long after Loki arrived the guards returned releasing the female. She pulled her light brunette hair up in a ponytail as she exited thanking the one opening the door. When she passed Loki's cell the two locked eyes for a second time in their brief moments together. Loki watched her leave leaving him with slight curious about who she was.
Steve looked around the place when he found her. She was sitting by the pool in a lawn chair as the shade from the umbrella-shaded her up to her knees.
"Cindel?" He asked as he approached.
Looking up from her book. "Depends, who is asking?"
Holding out his hand. "Steve Rogers."
Shaking his hand. "Where have I heard that name before?"
"We met briefly at your last visit with S.H.E.I.L.D." He politely answered.
Setting her book aside. "I have already filled my agreement with them."
"That is not why I am here."
"That I've gathered. Do I want to know why Fury has sent me the boy wonder? I haven't broken our agreement."
Taking a seat in the lawn chair next to her. "He has an offer for you and has sent me to retrieve you."
"Why not him?"
"He figures that you are less likely to get angry if I came than him."
Cindel's eyebrow arched. "He said that?"
"Well, he didn't say it in those words exactly. I fancied them up a bit."
That made her laugh. "I can see why he sent you."
"Really? Because I still don't, even after I asked him."
Grabbing her stuff. "That's because boy scout, besides me, Fury is the only person who knows of my situation."
Everyone turned to the sliding doors when they opened. "Ahh, Cindel you showed." Fury called out.
"I had to see why S.H.E.I.L.D needed my help. Especially when it's never been asked before and you send me this dude." Pointing her thumb at Steve.
Fury had everyone leave the room but the two of them. "As you are aware, we have Loki in our possession."
"So that's the leather-bound dude's name. What does he have to do with me?" Crossing her arms firmly.
"Are you aware of the Norse Gods?"
"A little, like we got Thursday from Thor among a few other things."
"Well, Loki is among the Norse Gods as the God of Mischief." Fury saw Cindel realize where the conversation was going.
Anger seeping from everywhere. "Fuck no."
Holding up his hands as Fury's expression was still emotionless. "It's not what you think. We just need someone who won't fall for his tricks."
"My answer is still the same. I've worked hard to stay off the radar and away from such things as all this. So let me make this clear to you Fury because I don't want you guys asking me for any more favors. It's why I came. I can't be around such things as Loki or any others who have some bizarre power and/or are Gods. It takes me every ounce of strength I have to stay the few days I have to spend locked up here once a year. So, thanks for the offer but never again." Cindel stormed from the room.
Weeks had passed and Cindel thanked everyday Fury didn't come after her. Or send anyone after her and try to get her to come back. She had her reasons to say no.
Cindel took a thirty-minute walk to her favorite place. It was remote and peaceful and the perfect place for her to mediate. It was a cliff that overlooked a vast open land of forest. There was a mountain with light snow on top of them, off to the left that added to the scene.
"This place is amazing." Cindel heard someone say behind her.
When she looked behind her she found Steve and another guy with him, she was enraged. When Cindel stood she got a better look at the second guy. He was shorter than Steve but by not much. He had darker hair and looked nervous.
"Whatever it is no. I am not doing anyone any favors no matter how you word it." She pointed at the two men.
"Just hear us out," Steve said.
"Why should I?"
The other guy with Steve took a few steps forward as he spoke. "Because apparently, Fury thinks that you can help better than us."
"Who are you?"
Placing his hands in his pocket. "Bruce Banner."
"What exactly do you two do for S.H.E.I.L.D?"
"We are part of the Avengers," Steve answered.
"Who?"
The two looked at each other than back to her. "You don't know? We were all over the news. We saved New York as well as the rest of the world." Steve said.
"We don't have a TV or get the newspaper. We try to stay away from it all in the beginning stages. All we have is a phone for emergencies."
It was now the guys turn to be confused. "We were wondering that. What exactly do you do up here?" Steve inquired.
"It's part of a drug/alcohol rehab center. We are the first stage up here. We get you off the stuff and how to cope with being drug or alcohol-free. The other rehab center you go to after here is how to live in society as a recovering addict."
"So you are a recovering addict?" Bruce asked.
Nodding. "For a while now."
"No offense but why is Fury so adamant on having a recovering addict work for S.H.E.I.L.D?" Steve said.
"That's something that is between me and him. I don't know you two that well to share such information if I wanted to. So go tell Fury I will not do whatever he wants from me."
Cindel was returning to her spot when she heard. "I had a feeling you might not come with them." Fury came out of where he was hiding.
"Than why send them?"
"Better chance of you hearing them out than me."
"Just tell me what you want so you can leave."
Fury placed his hands behind his back. "We need you to go with Thor to see if you can rehabilitate Loki."
"How can a regular person help someone like Loki? Last I checked he is a God." Steve blurted out.
Cindel's hand went to her face, she was going to have to tell them. "Because this person has the ability to handle everything Loki can throw at her. That's all you need to know." Fury explained.
Loki sat in the corner of his cell, eyes closed trying to pass the time. His eyes slowly opened when he heard a loud banging on the window to his cell. He saw it was the girl from when he was first put in the contraption by his brother and the other morons he works with. She was smiling big while holding up a sign that read 'You are fucked!'
"What do you think you are doing?" Fury walked in with Thor on his tail.
"Just messing with him before the actual work begins." Turning around to them.
"That is not wise," Thor said.
"For who?" Cindel snorted with a roll of her eyes.
Fury looked to Cindel. "You have everything ready?"
"What kind of question is that? Seriously? I should be asking how'd you get where you are? Because you suck." Cindel ranted about leaving the room.
Thor stared at the door she just left. "That woman can help my brother?"
"You want no one else to give this a try." Fury assured him.
Odin wasn't too happy with what Thor had suggested. "Father this woman comes highly recommended by S.H.E.I.L.D. We have no reason to not believe them."
"We do not need help from some women in taking care of our own."
"Give her a chance. What can it hurt?"
Slamming his staff down. "No!" He yelled.
Their heads turned to the doors of the throne room the father and son were in. "Excuse me, if you don't want me here I'll leave. Either way, I am good." Cindel stepped inside.
"Thor leave us." Odin refused to move his eyes from her.
"Father?"
"Do not make me repeat myself." Odin motioned for Cindel to come forward when Thor left. "What is your name?"
"Cindel."
He waited until she was at the bottom of the steps. "No your real name."
"You got it."
"Do not play games with me, I know who you are. Who you really are."
Placing her hands on her hips. "Than there is no need to share my real name with you."
"You were supposed to be dead."
Scrunching her nose. "Surprise."
"Why should I trust you? I should kill you where you stand."
"Because I have been dormant for a very, very long time. I have no desire to pick up where I left off. But in the grand scheme of things you have no real reason to trust me. I haven't given anyone a reason to trust me."
Odin sighed. "I do not like this."
"No shit I don't either. All I want to do is be back where I was on earth. I will spend forever making up something I believe will never be rendered. And I live with that guilt every day. I am not asking for you to trust me because I don't trust myself half of the time. Just give me a chance to see if I can fix Loki. Who better?"
"No one is to know about you. Especially Loki."
"Ya because I want to announce to everyone who I really am." Rolling her eyes at him.
"I don't care for your tone."
Pointing at him. "My tone can be however I want. You have no authority over me and you know that. But because I am a guest here I will be respectful. Now about my room, I have some requests to make."
"What?!" He shouted.
"Hey if I get these, I have no reason to leave my room but to work with Loki." Holding her hands up.
Loki looked up from his book when Cindel appeared in his cell. "So you are the person who is going to rehabilitate me." He got up from his chair, making a circle around her. He stopped just out of her sight. Cindel could feel breathing on her skin when he leaned forward whispering in her ear. "What can a simple girl like you do to help a powerful God as myself?"
Cindel turned to face him. "A lot more than you think. Now take a seat." Pushing him in the chair as she took a seat on his bed. Sitting all the way back to the wall her feet dangled over the bed.
"You are not a hologram?" Loki said more as a statement than a question.
Throwing one of her legs over the other one. "Such a thing would set me up for failure right away. I don't like to fail."
"And my so-called father was ok with this?"
"No, now onto fixing you."
Crossing his legs. "I am not broken"
"You tried taking over Earth. To rule the people on it."
"Because I'm a ruler and you are part of a weak race that needs to be ruled."
"It didn't work for Hitler, it's not going to work for you."
Loki's eyebrow arched "Hitler?"
"See, right there you were going to fail. It's how all the power-hungry bastards who try to take something over fail."
"Fail? I did not fail."
"You failed dude and you will every time you try to take anything over."
Loki was intrigued by this women. Never had he known anyone to speak to him like this before. "How do you know this?"
"Because you and anyone else who tries, can't take anything over that doesn't want to be taken over."
"I beg to differ."
Cindel snorted. "Than you will spend forever failing Loki. Because that is the only outcome of the path you are on has."
"I have killed people for such talk."
Sliding off the bed. "To die will be an awfully big adventure."
Loki was left alone and slightly amused by the human who is supposed to put him on the strait and narrow.
Later that afternoon Loki was visited by the women he has considered a mother to this day. Even after he had learned the truth. "What do you think of Cindel?" She asked.
"This is absolutely un…. That's her name?"
"She is a lovely girl isn't she?"
Pretending he was bored with the conversation. "She is a little obstinate for a human."
"She's a nice girl"
Rising from the seat. "She is human. What can a creature like her do for a God-like me?"
"You can give her a chance."
"Why? There is nothing wrong with me." Walking around his small cell.
Watching him walk around. "If that was true you would not be in here."
"It's only because I got caught." This only seemed to upset Loki even more, since he firmly believed he didn't belong in here. As well as he didn't do anything wrong.
The next day Loki was sitting in the window seal of his cell waiting. He stared out into the hallway not acknowledging Cindel when she arrived. He refused to make this easy for her.
"Morning," Cindel said when she arrived, but he said nothing. He didn't even look at her. "Ooo the silent treatment. That's mature." Loki wasn't going for that bait. "Ok fine don't talk to me."
After a few moments of silence, Loki looked over at Cindel. She was sitting in the same spot as yesterday but this time she was reading. Getting up he walked overtaking the book from her.
"The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest," Loki said out loud.
"Yes, it's a good trilogy. I just finished the second book yesterday. Now give it back."
Moving away from her. "You are supposed to be helping me."
"I can't if you won't talk to me. So while you sulk in the corner like a little child I'm going to read till you are willing to talk." Snatching her book back.
Walking back to his spot by the window. "I can wait a long time. Longer than your lifespan." Taking a seat.
"Than enjoy your loneliness." Going back to her book.
"You are ok with just sitting here till you die?"
Shrugging she looked at him. "Death is inevitable whether we like it or not. You can threaten me with it, tell me I'll die soon, whatever. It's not going to phase me because I know one day I'll eventually die."
"I hope you know it's rude to ignore the person you are with to read," Loki said after they sat in silence for a while.
Turning the page. "Says the God who gave me the silent treatment like a child when I first arrived. Then proceed to try and push his dominance on me by telling me if he wasn't jailed he'd kill me."
Cindel looked up from her book when Loki stood in front of her. "You should be fearing me. Why don't you?"
"Why should I?"
The two locked eyes staring each other down. "Not fearing me is a big mistake."
"I'll take my chances thank you." Returning to her book.
"As a weak human with a short lifespan that can be easily snuffed out of existence, you should be."
Setting her book aside. "What's with all this hate you have?"
"It's not hate."
Getting up again. "Disdain, whatever it is you'd like to call it. You have it in spades."
"You know nothing about me you, silly human."
Sticking her hands in her back pockets. "Ok first my name is Cindel not human, so use it. Second, you are angry and pissed off at everyone. I would be too if I was the black sheep of my family. And growing up with Thor as my brother. Geez, that's enough to anger anyone. What is it that upset you the most? Living up to the same expectations as Thor? Being compared to him all the time? That's got to be annoying. Ooo no, let me guess, meeting your father's expectations and no matter what Thor did, it was always perfect. He can do no wrong."
"This has nothing to do with Thor." He growled.
Taking a spin around the cell. "It has everything to do with him. Because what is going on now with you, like trying to take over Earth, all started somewhere."
"As I said, you know nothing. Human." He said the last word as almost an afterthought. And with as much condescension as he could.
Cindel stormed over stomping on Loki's foot. "It's Cindel!" Leaving the room.
Loki hopped up and down some. His foot throbbed horribly, his anger rising even more now. Where did that woman get off? No one was allowed to do such a thing. He was going to make this woman pay horribly the second he had the chance. It was bad enough she acted like a know-it-all, but she had no fear of him and what he is capable of. That was unacceptable.
Now he was to spend a very long time with this woman, which seemed to add salt to the wound and make his anger hit a new level.
A/N: This was written after the first Avengers in 2012 and during Thor: The Dark World in 2013. I recently found it in my stash of stories and thought I'd post it. I hope you like it and reviews are most welcome.
