Chapter One
When Klaus first came to New Orleans to see who was conspiring against him, he had not expected to find the little wolf pregnant with his child along with a brewing war between witches and vampires. It had all been a surprise. While he prided himself being able to handle whatever came his way and fight through it, this was more than he bargained for.
He wouldn't say it was more than he could handle, his pride wouldn't allow that, but he could not deny that having some extra help could not be the worst thing. Klaus took the streets of New Orleans, letting his mind wander as he thought of the days events and the issues to come that he would have to face likely on his own. As the thought hit him, a flicker of a memory from so long ago echoed in his mind causing him to stop in his trek. Her voice floating in his ears.
You are so ready and willing to face the world and all it's troubles alone, but you fail to realize you don't have to. I'd stand with you, always. You are not alone.
Yet all he felt was alone and the thought of her did not ease him like it often would. He took a moment to pretend that she was not as far away as she was, as if she were off on an adventure and would come here, come home to him. The image of her face entered his mind, her sparkling green eyes, her golden hair falling in waves over her shoulders, her smile make him want to grin with her. Klaus took an uneven breath.
Throughout his time in Mystic Falls, he did his best not to put her in harm's way and keep her out of trouble, his siblings helped as best they could without it being obvious or even noticeable. There had been the unfortunate incident where Tyler had bitten Caroline, it hadn't been his fault. Klaus had been ready to go save her soon as he heard, but was reminded that she didn't know him. The last time he had seen her was the curse, saying goodbye, wishing it didn't have to be that way. If he had gone straight there it would have been suspicious so he had to use this to his advantage as well as get close to his wife again.
Klaus thought on the memory more, allowing himself to get lost in it. How he had arrived at her house, Sheriff Forbes opening her door with a worried and angry expression. He wanted to explain himself to her, to tell her what happened he hadn't meant for, but there were other's listening so he could not say all he wanted. If she did not let him in he could just go around as he was already invited. What he did say was enough for the Sheriff though, she let him inside and he went to see Caroline, to really see her. Being the cause of this had been awful for him, he just wanted her safe.
With sad and tired eyes, she looked at him. There was no hatred in her gaze, no true recognition either, but she knew he was the hybrid. She knew he was tormenting her friends and had landed her here in this state. The sight of her like this reminded Klaus of when she had been sick back home, paling complexion and a shine of sweat along her bare skin.
"Are you here to kill me," she asked him weakly.
Never, is what he wanted to say, but he couldn't.
"On your birthday," he spoke softly, tried to keep his tone up, "Do you really think so low of me?"
Her gaze met his, she said, "Yes."
Klaus had to admit it did sting, each of her rejections stung him more than he could ever say, but he reminded himself again and again she had no idea who he truly was, who they were to each other. It was painful to watch, it was hard to see her with his enemies and getting in the way. Though he had to admit he enjoyed how her friends continued to use her as his distraction. He imagined that even if they hadn't met a thousand years ago, he still would have enjoyed having those small times with her. He loved her in the past, he loved her even more in the present. Watching her in her time had been wonderful, he only wished they had spent more time with each other.
When things began to settle here, when he had a better handle on the situation, he would go to Mystic Falls or to her little college, to see her once again. Perhaps even convince her to journey down with him, maybe even get her memories to return. Without fully realizing it, he pulled out his phone and looked to her contact picture. The sight of her smiling face made him feel warm, a nice feeling he was growing unaccustomed to. For a few moments, he debated calling her, but the urge died down as he knew there was nothing he could say.
Currently she wanted nothing to do with him, he often wondered why. There was an obvious connection, but she ran from it with such vigor and force, covering it with cruel words and hostility. His best guess was that she feared their connection because she had no explanation for it, with any luck her memories were that underlining reason. He imagined having her in New Orleans, showing her the city, giving her everything she could ever want. His phone then lit up with the name Damon Salvatore, a surprise if he ever saw one.
After the third ring, he answered, "The older Salvatore brother. To what do I owe this unpleasantry, someone else bitten by a stray dog?"
"No. Thought you'd like to know the psychotic doppelganger is about to be no more," Damon said, Klaus could hear him pouring himself a drink.
Klaus raised an eyebrow, "Katerina is dying? Why tell me this?"
Damon answered, "Considering the kitty-kat only has some odd hours left, had a feeling you'd want to soak in the moment. That the little vampire who eluded you for centuries was about to be no more. Your last chance for any revenge."
"I'm listening," Klaus said, a smirk on his face.
Damon didn't give him many details, all he said was that a now very human Katherine would not last the night and he should journey to the Salavatore Estate to have his last revenge. It was more than tempting. The more twisted part of Klaus was pleased to hear this, that finally Katerina would be lost and pay for all the centuries of waiting he had to endure. However as he hung up the phone what made him feel even better was the fact that Caroine would most certainly be there. This meant he could use his time there to bring back the memories she had long forgotten.
Klaus lifted his head towards the sky, basking in the light as he thought of bringing Caroline home with him. He sent a text to Rebekah, informing her that the two of them were making a trip to Mystic Falls. Her reply came quick enough with a question as to why they needed to go to Mystic Falls, but Klaus would not say until they were out of the city. Last thing he needed was for Elijah learn of Katerina's condition, it would be better that he not get involved and remain focused on the city while he took a trip.
Now the most important thing to Klaus was getting Caroline to remember who she was to him. The city was not as contained as he would have liked, but he did not think there would be a perfect time to bring his wife home. It was ambitious and maybe naive for him to believe that the city would be perfectly his anytime soon and he did not want to wait forever. While he meant his words to Caroline that he would be her last love and wait for her, he did still hope that it would not take lifetimes. They had already missed centuries together, he truly didn't want to miss anymore.
Klaus looked down at his phone, pulling up the picture he had of her and said, "I'm coming sweetheart. It's time for you to come back to me."
When Caroline started college, she had hoped that maybe the supernatural craziness of the world would lighten up. At least rough for her to get involved in school, to get a move on with her life, but she supposed it wasn't meant to be. Now she was wandering the first around the Salvatore Estate in search of Matt who was buried alive somewhere on the grounds and she couldn't hear him. That sent worry and panic through her, what if she was too late? No, no, they wouldn't be too late and she would get him out or Bonnie and Jeremy would get him out. Caroline took a quick breath, she needed to stay calm and hurry to find him.
"Matt," she called out, hoping he could hear her, "Matt, we're coming for you! Don't worry!"
Before she could call out to him again, she was forced to halt in her walk through the woods. Standing not a yard away from her was Klaus Mikaelson, the big bad hybrid who was a constant thorn in her and everyone's side. Yet she couldn't fight that irritating stab of happiness at the sight of him. Ever since the first time she saw him, she had felt this dull and far off feeling that made her happy. As if seeing him made her happy when she didn't know him and then when he made his pursuit of her clear, she couldn't deny that she wanted him, that she wanted to know him. It made absolutely no sense to her, he was awful and cruel and evil, but she couldn't ignore that she felt something for him.
"Hello Caroline," Klaus said with a slight grin.
Caroline released a breath, "Klaus..."
Klaus could admit that being on opposite sides was one of the biggest pains he had endured over the course of his very long life. That night when he compelled her memories of him away along with hiding her magic, he had been enraged. For the time being he had to let her go and forge her own path until somehow they found each other again.
Despite his patience he knew he had, when things in New Orleans were growing to be overwhelming he felt the need for his wife more and more. He missed her so, he needed her by his side once again and new that the home he was building in New Orleans would never be complete without her beside him. It had been little more than a year since his curse was lifted, since he found his wife alive and lifted her own curse only to hide it away from her. The woman who once looked at him as if he were magnificent only stared at her with disdain, though he saw conflict in her gaze and the twitching of her mouth.
Caroline spoke sharply, "Sorry. Matt's buried alive. No time to chat."
Not waiting for his response, she sped away. Klaus grinned for a moment before racing after her, she wouldn't get away that easily. One way or another, tonight his wife would remember him and everything they shared. And he knew she would learn of what was transpiring in New Orleans and that was not something he was necessarily looking forward to as he really needed to convince her to join him to New Orleans. His previous attempts had failed, but he was confident that if she had her memory, if she knew of their true connection, she would join him.
When she stopped, he appeared behind her and spoke evenly, "Are you not the least bit curious as to why I'm here?"
Caroline spun around, an annoyed look on her face, "I literally just wooshed at the sight of your face, so no."
"Damon informed me that Katerina Petrova made a tragic turn," Klaus supplied for her.
Caroline replied with a tone of disbelief, "So, you're here to gloat over her corpse-to-be? Delight in the closure of five hundred years of revenge. Great. I'm even less interested now."
With an irritated look, she disappeared from sight, but Klaus was just as fast and caught up to her with ease. It amused him that she was so stubborn. Learning that Caroline was from this time had been quite the surprise, but he had to admit he enjoyed seeing her in this time. That fire he loved in her was stronger here, when she was in her element and as a vampire. That strength she possessed was amplified, it made him love her even more. Though their previous interactions had been less than ideal considering she only knew him as an enemy, as the guy who was tormenting her friends, as this unfortunate version of himself, Klaus would not be deterred.
He along with his siblings ensured that she was not caught in any crossfire too badly, doing his best to keep her from harm without it being obvious that he was protecting her. Not to mention the pain he endured watching as she fell in love with Tyler Lockwood. That had nearly caused Klaus to reveal just exactly who Caroline was to him and destroying the wolf, but he couldn't do that. Under no circumstance could she know of their closeness. When Esther had been present, she nearly brought Caroline's memories back and putting her at risk which had been the last straw for Klaus. He appeared at her side.
"Well perhaps you'd be more interested in talking about Tyler," Klaus said with a knowing look on his face.
This caught Caroline's attention, "Is he...Did you…"
Klaus responded with quick succession, "Nah. I sent him off with a little more than a bruised ego. He really does hate me, poor lad. Revenge...it eats at him. I hear you two broke up."
For a moment, Caroline was surprised that Klaus would mention that, but then again she knew of his thing for her. His tone at the end was thinly veiled happiness that she was single. She loved Tyler, she still cared about him, though she couldn't deny that she was just under heartbroken over his choice. The young vampire took a breath, not wanting to get more upset over it when she noticed something about Klaus. He was watching her with some concern, it was much softer than she had ever seen and that little twinge of deja vu hit her. It wasn't often that she felt the feeling around him, but every time she did, it made her nervous.
Caroline spoke clearly, "Because I made him choose. Me, or his stupid revenge fantasy. He chose wrong. I suggest that you learn from his mistake and let Katherine die in peace. Dying sucks enough as it is...no need to rub anyone's nose in it."
Before more could be said, Caroline ran off to continue her search for Matt while Klaus remained in his spot. He would give up everything if it meant she would be happy. A long ago memory of Caroline expressing her fears of never being chosen, how she felt no one would ever pick her. It had been his goal to show her how she would always be his choice, if given the opportunity, he would give up anything for her.
A part of him wondered if he asked her this, would she ask him to give up what he was building in New Orleans? If she would ask him to give his revenge schemes and cruel plots there. He would give up the revenge, he knew he would if she asked. That was terrifying. After waiting a few moments, he went after her to see her calling for her friend.
When she stopped, he spoke, "Would you give me the same choice?"
Caroline turned around to face him, "What?"
"Were I to abandon my revenge against Katerina, would you give me the same choice as Tyler," Klaus asked stepping closer to her.
Caroline frowned at his words, "I, I don't know what you mean."
Klaus didn't miss a beat, "Yes you do."
"You can't do this to me," Caroline protested as her face scrunched in frustration and impatience, "You can't just show up while my friend is missing and is in danger."
Klaus couldn't resist the teasing tone as he said, "You know, while you've been vamping off in all the wrong directions, I heard Matt's distant and desperate screams."
"Where," Caroline asked, concerned.
He offered her a reassuring smile with a mischievous glint, "Don't worry love, I've got it covered. Trust me. He'll be quite happy with his rescuer."
Caroline's shoulders sagged, one part in relief for Matt and the other in defeat as she knew Klaus wasn't going anywhere soon. She could decide whether to be happy or irritated by that. It was too confusing for her, whenever he was around she felt torn up on the inside and couldn't decide what to feel about it all. Without a word, she turned slightly away from Klaus wondering what she should do. Running off wouldn't work as he'd just follow her. A conversation with him wouldn't kill her, but she hated that small pin prick of desire to walk with him through these woods. That little feeling of walking through the woods with him, that it would be nice.
"Let's go for a walk," Caroline said softly.
Klaus' eyes lit up at the suggestion, he nodded, "Lovely idea. Then we can chat."
Caroline didn't say anything to that, she just started walking. It took a moment, but Klaus joined her and fell in step beside her. As they walked for these few moments in silence, Caroline couldn't fight the feeling of deja vu that hit her. She did her best to push it aside.
Klaus broke the silence, "So, the quarterback has been saved. What now?"
Caroline barely held back a scoff, "Don't you have a dying girl you need to go punish for her sins?"
"I do, but I won't, for you," he told her honestly.
This bothered her, unconvinced she replied, "So you came all the way to Mystic Falls to back off when I tell you to? That makes no sense."
Klaus spoke swiftly, "No. I came all the way to Mystic Falls to gloat over a corpse-to-be, as you so poetically put it, but I will leave, minus the gloating, in return for one small thing."
"And what is that," Caroliena asked, folding her arms over her chest.
"I want your confession," Klaus answered, his head tilted slightly.
Caroline frowned, she hadn't been expecting that, "My confession? I didn't do anything. Confession about what exactly?"
"Me," said Klaus, he took a breath before continuing, "As soon as we're done here, I'm going to walk away and I'm never coming back. You'll never again have to look me in the eye and cover our connection with hostility or revulsion. And you'll never have to loathe the darkest parts of yourself that care for me, in spite of all I've done.. I will be gone and you will be free. I just want you to be honest with me."
Caroline couldn't believe what he was asking of her, to tell him the truth about she felt about him when truthfully she could barely tell what she felt about him. Wherever Klaus went, danger and trouble followed because he caused it. Over the past thousand years he had done horrible deeds, made cruel decisions and even recently he had made questionable choices that hurt her friends or out them at risk. In all honesty, she should hate him, she should hate all he's done, but she didn't. Whatever she did feel for him, it wasn't hate or negative, she did hate herself for that. She needed him gone.
Caroline made a noise of disbelief and uncertainty before she spoke, "I, I'm in college. I'm building a life for myself. I have plans and a future and things that I want and none of those things involve you. Okay. None of them."
Klaus hated to hear it, but he understood and nodded, "I see."
"No you don't," Caroline argued, "Yes, I do cover our 'connection' with hostility, 'cause yes, I hate myself for the truth. So if you promise to walk away...like you said, and never come back. Then yes...I will be honest with you. I will be honest with you about what I want."
Klaus took a step closer to her and held her gaze, "I will walk away. And I will never come back. I promise."
Caroline took a breath, she stared into his eyes and didn't look away as she started to close the distance between them. For this moment in time, for the next moments in time, she would forget all he had done, she would be completely honest with herself and with him. While it was something she had ever admitted, something she never wanted to admit, she would do it for this snippet of time. When only a inch of space separate them, Caroline spoke one word.
"Good."
Then her lips are pressed against his, slow at first and gentle. To her it was their first ever shared, but that feeling of deja vu hit her much stronger than before. They had kissed before, she had no idea when and forced the thought away. The touch is light and reminded Klaus of their first kiss standing breathless by the bonfire for the festival.
The kiss did not stay slow, when she pulled away for a moment he was more than pleased to see the grin on her face. She kisses him with more passion and he returned the favor until his arms were around her, until her hands were all over him. Like so many nights in their home, they were lost in each other. It had been magical, it had been everything they wanted and more. It happened and then it was over, but neither intended to move just yet. Even when their clothes were put back on, they had ended up back lying on the ground soaking in the moment.
They had been lying on the forest floor for ages now it seemed, but neither was ready to move from their position. Not when they were both content to remain there in each other's arms, no matter how wrong it may have seemed, it was still right. Caroline let herself relax in Klaus' embrace, she couldn't believe that she was here and had actually slept with the big bad.
She knew she should feel horrible about this, disgusted with herself, but she couldn't bring herself to care much for it. There was no denying that she was attracted to Klaus, that she dared say she liked him more than she should especially since he was tormenting her friends and had done all kinds of horrible things to countless people over the years. Yet that didn't matter in this snippet of time. All that mattered was she wanted him and she knew he was more.
He whispered into her ear that made her heart stop. That was when the compulsion broke.
A/N: Long note here, some explaining, nothing pressing so feel free to skip, but if you're curious, read on. Welcome to this story, if you have not read The Sun and Moon, An Immortal Dance, I only recommend you read it. As this story is a sequel, some things may not make sense without having read the first story, but this story will have some references and explanations regardless so even if you haven't read the other story, you won't be too lost.
Pretty much, this story is my take on Caroline in New Orleans. Now fanfictions that follow episodes are, to me personally, a blessing as a reader and a curse as a writer. I know myself well enough that I wouldn't be able to keep up with each episode that closely, but the chapters will have a lot of influence there with the changes I want to make.
The biggest example is the Hayley and Hope. Now a lot of stories I've found with Caroline in Nola will remove Hayley, put Caroline in Hayley's place or just have Hayley bashing. I can admit I did not like Hayley in TVD, but I love her in the Originals and I love the baby story line. So that will definitely be present here, stir up trouble and all that jazz. Caroline and Hayley will start out as little more than acquaintances before becoming friends.
On a slightly important note, because of the changes made in the first story, there is a ripple effect of changes here. What happened with Caroline and Damon in season 1 has been removed, Kol was not killed in TVD, and a few other things. These will be referenced and explained as they are not in the first story and I did not want to write everything that happens between this story and Sun and Moon. With that, I think that's everything.
If any of that bothers you, then maybe check out a different story. I just wanted to put that out there. Either which way, thank you for checking out the story, I look forward to see you guys.
