Chapter 15: Not A Safe Haven For Wayward Teenage Ghosts
Jazz and Dan walked through the front door of their home and heard their mother shout angrily from the kitchen. "Daniel James Fenton, get in here!"
"And I'm out." Dan muttered turning around but before he could walk out the door Jazz grabbed the back of his shirt and dragged him in the direction of the kitchen.
"You got detention for fighting?" came the disappointed voice of his father as the two kids entered the room.
"Wasn't really what I'd call a fight." Dan grumbled rolling his eyes, straightening out his shirt after Jazz let go of him.
"Any form of physical altercation is a fight Danny, you don't have to draw blood or have the other person end up in hospital." Explained his mother as both her kids sat down at the table ready for dinner.
"Maybe not, but drawing blood in a fight is always more interesting. I got detention so punishment has been served. Are you done yet, cause I have things to do." Dan lied, playing with the butter knife of his table setting, sneering at his old parents.
They continued arguing back and forth, the parents of the delinquent teen becoming more and more angry with every come back from the half ghost who himself was becoming more irritated and exhausted with the whole situation. Jazz sat tensely her hand slipping into her bag hanging on the side of her chair, fingers brushing against the ghostly deflector that she had hidden in there.
"I have had enough of this attitude young man. You will go to your room without dinner and you will do your homework and then in bed by eight. We will decide once your punishment has been served." ordered his mother.
"Fine by me. Means I don't have to engage in conversation with you lot and I'm not hungry anyway." grumbled Dan as he stood up from the table.
"Go to your room. Now!" Jack snapped at him. Jazz just sat there wanting to just bang her head against the table. Why did she have to get stuck with the homicidal ghost brother?
Dan stomped up the stairs to his old room and slammed his bedroom door as soon as he was inside. He floated over to his bed and let gravity take it's course as he flopped face down onto his bed.
Plasmius was floating invisibly outside of Fenton Works looking through the windows and listening to the argument going on within the walls. He followed Dan's stomps up the stairs into his room, then proceeded to just float invisibly a little way away from the building so Danny's ghost sense wouldn't be triggered.
Dan groaned into his pillows, he had had enough of this house and his old family, he was sick of it. He had to get out of this place, all of this was giving him a headache, he needed to go let off some steam and fly around town for a while. He rolled off the bed and stood up walking over to his desk grabbing a pen and paper and writing a note for Jazz.
Don't panic or do, I don't really care what you do. I have gone out. I will be back by 10pm, if I'm not then feel free to call Danny or whoever to hunt me down - Dan.
He walked through the walls to Jazz's room and placed the note under Bearburt Einstein. Once he put the teddy bear down he looked around his old sisters room. Why the heck did I write her a note? Is this what Danny usually does if he sneaks out and this body just does things from muscle memory? He though as he stared at his hand. Dan walked to the middle of the room, transformed into his ghost half and flew through the wall into the outside world. He took in a deep breath of the fresh evening air until he coughed up a cold breath and turned around to glare at his cheese head arch enemy who was floating just a little bit above him, looking down on him with a cocky smile.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Dan growled.
"I'm here to make sure you are doing as your told. And clearly I am needed as it seems you cannot follow simple instructions from your own mother to stay in your room." Vlad shot back.
"Urgh, how many times? I don't need a babysitter!" Dan shouted.
"Some of us would beg to differ that Daniel." teased Vlad. Dan growled in anger as he flew towards Vlad aiming to punch him in the face. Vlad caught the punch and smirked at Dan.
"You say it has been over 10 years since we last fought? Yet you are still as predictable as ever and still punch like a child." Vlad taunted, wanting to see how far he could push this different Danny before he snapped. Dan sneered at him and punched forward with his other hand, Vlad caught that too. They both pushed each other back and forth, Dan growling and Vlad just looking at the other Phantom with interest.
"Why can't you all just leave me alone?" said the younger of the two.
"You know the answer to that little badger." Vlad said smoothly.
"Don't call me that." Dan's eyes widened, strength faltering at the old nickname, Vlad got the upper hand pushing Dan further onto his back in the air.
"Why not my boy?" said Vlad as Dan flew backwards away from him, wrenching his fists free from the older ghost.
"Arg, shut up! You-" Dan was cut off by a pain filled scream exiting his own throat as an excruciating pain tore into his back as he went wide eyed and immediately dropped from the sky onto the road below.
"Haha! You got him Mad's!" Shouted Jack Fenton staring between his wife who was holding a small silver and green gun, pointing it in the direction of where Dan had been fighting Vlad moments before.
Vlad was wide eyed at what had just happened, looking down from his aerial position at Maddie walking over to Dan. Vlad turned himself invisible as the two jumpsuit wearing ghost hunters looked up where he was, hoping they would think he took off. The back of Phantoms usual flawless jumpsuit was in tatters where the blue clad ghost hunter had shot the ghost boy. Dan groaned as he pushed himself up onto his elbow but before he could move any further he felt a piece of cold metal pressed against his temple along with a cold voice.
"Don't move Phantom or I'll shoot," It was his old mothers voice. He noted he'd never heard her sound like this before, her tone was all malice. His elbow collapsed from under him and he dropped back down to the floor, this time rolling onto his back moaning in pain as his burned back rubbed against the dirty concrete of the road.
"And don't bother trying to use your powers, they won't work thanks to our lovely new invention the Fenton molecular decelerator, disrupts and makes the use of all ghostly powers extremely painful to use for a minimum of twelve hours." Maddie said proudly keeping the gun trained on Phantoms form as he lifted a hand pointing it towards her. Dan cried out in pain as his hand sparked and the ecto-blast he had been trying to form had internally back fired and sent a painful shock back up his arm.
...
After dinner with just her parents Jazz had gone up the stairs to her room and sat at her desk with her head in her arms. She thought she should go check on Dan but she just wanted a couple minutes of piece before dealing with what was in the next room over.
Jazz had heard a loud scream from outside and so she got up and stuck her head out her bedroom window over looking the scene in front of her. Phantom led on the floor her mom leering over him and her dad cheering her on from their front door.
Vlad saw Jazz out the corner of his eye and slowly flew over to her staying a few feet away but close enough to talk quietly and turned visible again.
"Vlad? Quick do something!" Said Jazz panicking pointing at the road where her mother was currently pointing a gun at her estranged brothers head.
"Like what?"
"Help him!"
"Not my problem, you said I just had to stop him from destroying things nothing about protecting him."
"Listen here buddy. If anything happens to him that you could have prevented or if he turns back into human form in front of my parents, your secret is as good as gone." said Jazz pointing down to Dan. "Now go get him."
"And even if I believed that threat, where do you suppose I take him Jasmine?"
"Take him to yours! Dan had an argument with mom earlier so I can say while she was fighting Phantom he snuck out of the house and as I caught him leaving he said he was going to yours or something. That way I can try and convince them to just leave him alone for the night and you can drop him back here tomorrow if he's all back to normal...well Dan's version of normal anyway."
"My mansion is not some safe haven for wayward teenage ghosts," Vlad glared but Dan cried out in pain again, which for whatever reason made Vlad's shrivelled old heart ache slightly as he sighed. "I need a distraction to get to him." he said looking down at the Phantom who was writhing around on the road in pain trying to get up.
"I'm on it," Jazz stated as she ran our of her room, downstairs and out of the house. "Mom, dad, what are you doing?! Stop, you're hurting him!" she shouted over another one of Phantoms cries as Dan continued to try to use his powers out of spite and disorientation against their parents but they kept back firing.
"Oh don't worry Jazz, he can't really feel pain, this is all just an act to make himself appear more human but he's not, he's just a ball of ectoplasm they have no feelings and can't feel pain this is just a trick to make you feel bad," said Maddie plainly, ignoring the ghost on the floor in front of them.
"Go back inside Jazzy-pants your mom and I have this menace handled." Said Jack proudly getting a ghost net out of the Fenton RV.
"But Danny's gone!" she shouted in a panic when she realized they were both moving to drag Dan inside and down to the lab.
"What?!" Both parents looked towards Jazz, focusing on her instead of Phantom, leaving it open for Vlad to swoop down next to Dan who had given up on trying to summon an ecto-blast and was just led on the floor moaning in pain, head lolling to one side.
"Uh, yeah I went to check on him when I heard that first scream but he wasn't there so I ran down stairs and I um caught him leaving the house. I managed to get him to tell me he was going to go to Uncle Vlad's so-" Jazz was cut off by another cry from Phantom as Vlad tried to turn him invisible to fly him away. Vlad seeing that he couldn't turn Dan invisible to get away quickly looked up to see his two old collage friends staring down at him in surprise.
"Hey, hands off our catch ghost!" Maddie shouted as she aimed the small gun at Vlad but before she could get a shot off Vlad sent a small ecto-blast at her hand knocking the weapon from it. Vlad then glared at them both as Jack scrabbled to get another weapon from off his belt and as quickly but gently as he could put his arms under Dan's knees and shoulders, picking him up, holding him close and took off into the sky.
