It was a bright and early Thursday morning when Audrey found herself neck deep in a patients paperwork. She'd be there since the night before and was finding it harder and harder to focus. Her eyes felt heavy and she felt sick to her stomach, but knowing it was probably because she hadn't eaten in quite a while. Her patient was a young female, 13, who was suffering from chronic kidney disease. It wasn't just in one kidney but both of them were dying, meaning that she needed a transplant ASAP. The problem with that is that her blood is B negative, meaning she can only receive a person who has B negative or O negative.

"Dr. Lim?" Audrey's head shot up from her desk and her eyes made contact with Dr. Reznick

"Yes Dr. Rezick?" she questioned

"Patient in room 203, her father would like to talk to you" Morgan replied

"Thank you, I won't be a moment" Morgan nodded and left the room. After gathering the more vital information in a single folder, she headed down to the room.

"Good Morning Katie" Audrey smiled as she came up to the small girls bedside "How are we feeling today?"

"A little bit weak" Katie replied "and the hospital food here sucks"

"I'll be sure to let the kitchen know" Audrey strapped the blood monitor around Katie's arm. After a few minutes the machine has stopped and released the pressure on her arm "Your blood pressure is a little low so I'll get the nurses to get you some more Fludrocortisone"

"Thank you" Audrey nodded at her before looking at her father and nodding at him to the door. When she stepped outside, they followed her.

"Have you found a way to fix her yet?" Her father asked

"Both of her kidney's are failing, I've put her on med's to slow down the process but until we can find a donor there isn't much that we can do" Audrey explained

"So find her a donor!" he shouted

"I assure you, we have been working tir..."

"Clearly you haven't!" he growled "I've already lost my wife, I cannot loose my daughter as well!"

"What's going on here?" Dr. Melendez approached them

"This doctor can't find a solution to fix my little girl!" the father shouted

"This doctor, is The Chief of Surgery" Neil explained "and quite frankly the best one this hospital has seen. I can assure you that Dr. Lim has been working tirelessly..."

Neil was interrupted when Audrey's pager went off

"I'm very sorry" she tried "I have to go, you are in good hands with Dr. Melendez" with that she left

"Oh, so now she is too busy to help my daughter" he huffed

"Dr. Lim is extremely busy and she took on your daughters case specifically, not something that she usually does" Neil tried "I have seen her work endlessly trying to find your daughter a donor, I think she's called almost every single donor in the entire state of California"

"Then why hasn't anything come up?" he questioned

"Because your daughter is special, she has a rare blood type" Neil replied "If anything comes up, you will be the first to know"

Getting a page for an emergency down at the front desk, Audrey quickly took off, quite honestly wanting to get out of the situation between Neil and her patients father. When she reached the front desk, she saw an old man standing there talking to one of the nurses.

"Nurse Pino, what's the issue" Dr. Lim questioned

"This man here, claims to be your patients grandfather" she replied

"Katie is my granddaughter, my daughters daughter" the man said

"What was your name?" Dr. Lim questioned

"Lucas, my names Lucas"

"Okay, I'll need you to come with me"

"Her father told me she needs a Kidney transplant" he said as they started walking towards room 203

"Yes she does, we are working very ha..."

"I wanted to be tested" he suddenly said "I want to give her my kidney"

"We can't just take his kidney" Neil tried, as he, Audrey and Marcus sat around in Audrey's office "He already has an immune deficiency, this will kill him"

"He wants this" Marcus argued "He's a perfect match for her"

"It's murder!"

"The man has only has a few more years left to live, his body is already in failure"

"So that makes it okay to rip his life from him?"

"He is doing this so he can save his granddaughter!"

"Both of you, enough!" Audrey cut in, tired of their bickering "It's my call"

"So who are you going with?" Neil questioned, raising his eyebrows

"I need to do more research, find out his medical background before I make any decisions" she explained "I also need to go talk to the patient, so if you two could stop arguing for more than 5 seconds that would be great" she quickly got up and walked out of the room.

"She won't side with you" Marcus spoke "Boyfriend or not, she knows the right call"

"She has morals" Neil argued

"She also has a soft spot for children. This girl is only 13 years old who has her whole life ahead of her. Her grandfather has lost his wife to cancer and his daughter to a car accident. I know for a fact that this little girl, means everything to him and there won't be anything he won't do for her. Audrey will see that" with that, he also left the room.

Audrey made her way down to the patients room, pausing briefly when she felt a wave of nausea ground her. She shook her head when it passed, reminding herself to head down to the cafeteria when she was finished here. When she arrived to the patients room, she saw both the father and grandfather sitting next to Katie's bed, engrossed in conversation.

"Hello" Audrey greeted them

"Grandfather says he wants to donate his kidney to me" Katie spoke

"Yes" she tried "That is still under discussion"

"What's there to discuss?" Lucas questioned "I want to do it"

"I know you do, and I fully respect that. There is just so many variables to go through"

"I accept them all, just let me save her" he pleaded

"Can I speak to you both outside" the two men nodded and followed her outside the room, shutting the door so Katie couldn't hear

"There is a 92% chance you die on that operating table" Audrey started "You're immune system wouldn't be able to hand..."

"That's a risk I'm willing to take" Lucas replied, cutting her off

"And how do you feel about this?" Audrey turned to the father

"I...I don't know what to say" he tried "This will save my daughters life and she needs this. How I can deny the offer"

"Despite knowing that her grandfather could die?"

"I'd do anything for Katie, and If I was a match I'd give her my Kidney in a heart beat"

"Please" Lucas pleaded "I've lost both my wife and my daughter. I can't go through the pain of loosing her as well"

"I'll see what I can do"

"Thank you so much!"

Audrey sat in her office alone for what felt like the 100th time that day. Her head was held in her hands as she tried to rid the splitting headache she had and was bent over her desk to try relieve the stress on her back. Her cup of coffee she had made an hour ago was stone cold even though she hadn't taken a sip and her tummy rumbled despite the fact that she had managed to grab a muesli bar from the cafeteria before heading to her office. For what felt like an eternity of her drifting in her own thoughts she was broken from her trance when she heard her office door open. With heavy eyes, she looked towards the door to see Neil holding a bottle of juice and a brown paper bag.

"Hey" he greeted her, shutting the door

"Hey" she replied "that for me?" she motioned to the objects in his hands

"Sure is"

He placed the bag on the desk followed by the juice before taking a seat across from her. She didn't say anything as she opened the bag to reveal a hot ham, cheese and tomato toastie. She scrunched her nose and took the toastie apart, removing the ham and placing it back in the bag.

"What was that for?" he questioned at the unusual act

"That ham smelt funky" she replied taking a bite "But this is good, thank you"

"Of course, I haven't seen you eat much today" he pointed out "Or been sleeping for that matter"

"I got a few hours in during overnight, this case is just killing me"

"Have you come to a decision?" he questioned

"He wants this" she smiled sadly "Like he really wants this"

"and He knows he wont survive the surgery"

"He knows there is a 92% chance, yes. I've talked to him about this risk but he's adamant"

"So you're going to go through with it?" he questioned, slightly agitated

"I think so" she murmured

"Seriously"

"She's a little girl Neil"

"and she's high on the donor list"

"Her body is so small, her kidney's are failing and she'll die within the next week if we don't do something"

"It's murder"

"It's a sacrifice" she tried "Her grandfather is willing to sacrifice himself to save his granddaughter"

"Audrey..."

"I've made my decision" she stood "You're either with me, to which you can assist in the OR, or you're not" with that, she left the office

Audrey entered her patients room once again, finding them in the exact same position as they were last time.

"I need you to sign a consent form" she said, holding out a folder to the grandfather "Legally"

"You've agreed?" he questioned "We can do the surgery?"

"You have my full permission" she replied

"Thank you so much" Katie's father replied "Hear that Pumpkin, it's all going to be okay"

"You found a donor?" she questioned, unaware that her grandfather was accepted and not just a random candidate like she previously thought.

"Yes, you are very lucky" Audrey smiled "We can have you prepped and ready for first thing tomorrow morning

"Thank you doctor" Lucas cried, tears of joy and sadness

"Katie is lucky to have you as a grandfather" she nodded at them before leaving the room. When she stepped out the door she felt it again, a wave of nausea rushed over her, this time it was much worse. Her stomach twisted and her hand rushed to her mouth. Placing the patients folder on the nearest table, she rushed to the closest staff bathroom. Pushing the first cubical open, she fell to her knees, letting go of anything she had eaten that day, which was admittedly not that much. After dry heaving for another few minutes, feeling she had nothing left to release, she leaned against the door. Wiping her mouth, she stood and walked over to the basin. Running the cold water under her hands, she splashed her face and washed her mouth out.

When she looked into the mirror, she could see the bags under her eyes and her pale skin. She had been feeling extremely exhausted these past few days and just figured it was time just catching up with her. After patting her face dry, she exited the bathroom, putting on the strong facade of the Chief of Surgery and walking back to her office.

It was near 2pm the next day, Audrey had performed the surgery perfectly and both patients were currently unconscious. Just by observing, she could tell that Lucas was not going to survive being taken off bypass. His blood pressure had dropped dramatically, his skin was pale and his breathing shortened. She always knew of the high risk, but still held out hope that he would survive. A few more hours passed and his condition worsened, he went from slightly breathing on his own to needing a tube down his throat. Eventually, finding that the tube was the only way he was going to be breathing, she needed to go wake up Katie in order for them to say their goodbyes so she quickly made her way from the front desk to the patients room.

"You look like you need some sleep" Audrey said, as leaned against the wall in the door way

"I'll sleep when I know my little girl is okay!" the father snapped "Sorry, I'm just worried"

"You're not the first worried person I've dealt with" she smiled "Let's wake her up"

Audrey walk over to Katie and started working around the machine. After a few minutes, she heard Katie's breathing deepen

"She's waking" Audrey stepped back. Katie's eyes fluttered open and the first thing she saw was her dad.

"Dad" Katie mumbled, reaching her arms out to him and he grabbed her hand

"Hey angel, how are you feeling" he smiled

"Tired" she replied

"Everything looks really good, you're going to be just fine Katie" Audrey smiled

"Thank you doctor" her father stood and held out his hand which Audrey promptly shook

"It's not me you should thank" she replied

"Right, how is he?"

"I'm very sorry" she looked down at her clipboard and took a deep breath "You can say your goodbyes shortly"

"Thank you again" Audrey smiled at them as the father turned to his daughter, hugging her tightly.

Arriving back home from her 38 hour shift, Audrey could see Neil's Tesla parked in her driveway. Reaching down to her keys, she opened the garage and parked her bike inside. After closing the garage and using the garage door to enter the home, she saw Neil sat on the couch reading what she assumed to be some paperwork. Ignoring his pretence for the time being, she walked over to the kitchen and placed her bag on the counter. She opened the fridge to see a container of noodles, assuming to be the food Neil bought over as it wasn't there when she was at her home last.

She pulled out the container and placed it in a bowl before putting it in the microwave to be heated up. After about 1 and a half minutes, the timer went off and she used a tea towel to pull the bowl out and place it on the bench. Letting it cool down a little, she poured herself a cold glass of wine and grabbed her cutlery before moving over to the couch where she placed the bowl in her lap and the glass of wine on the coffee table.

"She liked soccer" Neil suddenly said, looking up at her

"Sorry?" she questioned, confused

"Katie" he replied "She liked soccer and did ballet. I was talking to her after her surgery"

"Oh..."

"I'm sorry for not agreeing with your decision, it was the right call" he said "I was too busy focused on the facts that I didn't even notice that this was a little girl who's grandfather was willing to sacrifice himself to save her"

"We're allowed to have different opinions" she replied taking some of her dinner in her mouth "and it was a tough decision to make"

"I hate that you have to make them, I know it's your job but it's so much pressure. I'm not sure how you do it"

"You make it a hell of a lot easier" she smiled "You and Andrews, you both made valid points today. It was a tough decision, but I think I made the right call"

"I think you did too" he smiled "But once you finish eating that, you're gonna head to bed right?"

"I actually have some work that I need to fi..."

"Bed" he said more firmly "You've been awake for far to long and you wont' be able to concentrate tomorrow at all. It's best you get some sleep"

"So bossy" she murmured, taking a sip of her wine

"You may be allowed to boss me around at work, but here..." he raised his eyebrows

"You honestly think that it's much of a change when we are back here?" she questioned

"On occasion" he smirked, standing and holding his hand out "Come on"

"Where are we going?" she questioned, placing her bowl on the coffee table and taking his hand.

"bed"

"Bed?" she raised her eyes suggestively

"Yes, bed" he leaned down to kiss her shoulder "as much as I would love to see your writh in pleasure beneath me" she shivered as he kissed just below her ear "We are both extremely tired"

"Fun sponge" she moaned as he pulled away, making her feel cold.

"Besides, we will have more energy for tomorrow" he took her hand and started dragging her up the stairs "Morning sex is always my favourite"
