Chapter One
Can one ever leave the mafia? Sure. They can leave. Maybe in a casket they can leave. Or in the Witness Protection Program they might could make an exit. Escaping the mafia way of life just isn't easy as one might think. I don't know that anyone who actually knows the answer to the question is going to tell you. If anyone did tell you, they probably don't really know the answer themselves. And if anyone who really knows ever did tell, you wouldn't know for certain that what they are telling you is true because he or she definitely is not going to tell you just how they know — it's a secret organization. They took an oath - Omerta.
Meeting Callie Torres eight years ago was a dream come true for Arizona Robbins, or so she thought. Never in Arizona's wildest dreams did she think that she would be married into a mafia family. It's not the sort of thing a girl thinks about when she's daydreaming of a future spouse. When Arizona began dating Callie, she assumed Callie was a business woman. You know the type - the fitted blouse and pencil skirt, the power suit, poised and regal. Callie was sophisticated and well educated, having received an MBA from Harvard. With long tanned legs, jet black hair, and shapely curves, Callie was gorgeous. Simply put, she was perfection and oh how Arizona fell in love with her.
The Torres Family was the most powerful of the five major mafia crime families that have dominated organized crime in New York since the 1930s. Vito Torres, an immigrant from Sicily, built his family empire along with his son, Carlos Torres, Callie's father. This group's operations extended from New York and the eastern seaboard all the way to California. The family's illicit activities included labor and construction racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering, murder for hire, construction, fraud and wire fraud, hijacking, pier thefts and fencing.
Women's roles in the mafia over the years have changed. What was once thought of as a "woman's place is in the kitchen" is still the normal for many mafia families. However, this concept is rapidly changing. In recent years, there has been a rise in women's involvement in organized crime. A perfect example of this is Callie Torres. Rising through the ranks of this massive crime family, she made a name for herself, and a reputation as well. Callie was known to be tough, intimidating, cold, and yes…. vindictive. On the flip side, Callie Torres was also loving, attentive, and an excellent friend and mother.
While traditionally women are barred from getting involved, with the right character traits, women have challenged the male-dominant mafia structure by utilizing their own skills and ingenuity. Seeing Callie in these various forms over the years, I think Arizona sometimes became overwhelmed. After all, she didn't even know how to deal with the fact that her gorgeous brunette wife was a murderer. The illegal activity that Callie and her family were involved with, in order to gain money and power, made Arizona rather uncomfortable at times. She loved Callie, but she didn't sign up for all of this. Did she?
Arizona's story was a complicated one. Feeling trapped in her marriage and linked to the most powerful mafia family in the United States, Arizona found herself at her wits end. Her every move was always followed. Her whereabouts were always accounted for, either by her wife or by bodyguards. Their children were sent to private Catholic schools, and decisions concerning their children were approved or disapproved by Callie for the most part. While Arizona continued to practice as a licensed pediatrician, her work hours were drastically cut in half. Callie preferred her wife to work less and spend more time at home.
Arizona felt that control was her wife's motto in life. She thought Callie thrived on complete control at work as well as at home. As much as Arizona loved Callie, she was sinking in despair and after some years together, she needed a little time to - catch her breath? Escape?
This is the story of Arizona Robbins-Torres. You know her name, but not her story. You've heard what she's done, but not what she's been through.
This is her story...This is her life...
