Kageyama had been confused lately. Naturally his confusion was accompanied by images of a mess of orange colored hair that belonged to a certain hyperactive ray of sunshine. Usually when it came to Hinata, Kageyama either felt respect or exasperation, usually both. However, recently he had found himself thinking about his teammate more often, as well as catching himself looking at the smaller male a little too long lately. Kageyama had never thought about romance too often, usually spending all of his time practicing or thinking about volleyball. He hadn't even put much thought into his growing interest in Hinata until a certain day at practice. Everything was fairly normal too.
Coach was keeping them working hard, like usual, playing a scrimmage match. Kageyama had been put on the same team as Hinata, naturally, as well as Nishinoya and Yamaguchi. Daichi, Sugawara, Asahi, and Tsukishima were on the the opposing team. It was an uneventful day, but for some reason, a particular moment caught his attention. Again, nothing spectacular, just Hinata jumping for a spike, but for some reason Kageyama found himself staring at the shorter male. Its not like he was staring at anything in particular, not even the way Hinata's legs and bottom looked in those shorts. Well, he did notice after the fact, but in the moment he was just mesmerized by Hinata. Graceful didn't even begin to describe it, and fortunately everyone was too busy praising the play for them to notice Kageyama staring and blushing. Hinata looked over at him and locked eyes. He gave his admirer the brightest smile Kageyama had ever seen. He ended up excusing himself, saying that he had to run to the bathroom before rushing out of the gym.
That's when the thoughts began. He had realized that he had never really been as close to anyone as he had been with Hinata. The two of them had been practically groomed into a duo by Daichi, and had been a team ever since.
After a few weeks of this, Kageyama concluded that he had to be feeling attraction. He wasn't sure, he'd never felt this way, but he was going to figure it out. He was surprised though, that he was asking himself these things about a guy.
It was Saturday, and the gym was closed for renovation. Kageyama approached Hinata at the beginning of the day, in the classroom.
"Hey, Kageyama, shouldn't you be getting to class?" Hinata asked innocently, leaning back and looking up at Kageyama from his desk. Damn, he was cute.
"I wanted to stop by and ask if you wanted to hang out after school" Kageyama replied, quite calm despite the knots in his stomach.
"Oh, did you want to practice together?" asked the smaller male.
"Not today, I was actually trying to catch a movie, my treat" he said.
"Oh, sure, what movie?" Hinata said, smiling. Really cute.
"You can pick, I'll see you after school" Kageyama waved and quickly headed out the door, hoping Hinata hadn't caught the blush. Too cute.
Kageyama spent all day with his mind buzzing about...whatever this was. It definitely wasn't a date, it couldn't be a date because Kageyama wasn't sure. Maybe he should bring it up to Hinata later? How would he feel about these thoughts in Kageyama's head. For the first time he began to think about what it would be like to date Hinata. It wouldn't be too much different, naturally, but now a blush was spreading across his face as he imagined doing couple things like holding hands, or even kissing. Kageyama had bit his lip at that last thought. He bet Hinata had really soft lips. He felt the blush creep up to his ears. He clenched his fist and made a conscious effort to pay attention to the lecture, to some success.
It was a long day, and Kageyama had barely been able to pay attention. He was mentally berating himself for his lack of focus as he waited outside for Hinata. Very suddenly, he was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard his name.
"KAGEYAMAAAAAAA" Hinata thundered as he sprinted past. "I'll race you to the theater!" The short ball of energy turned the corner out of the gate. Kageyama gritted his teeth, before taking off after him at top speed. Was he annoyed? Yes, probably more than usual, given his own internal struggles, but he also found it refreshing. His expression twisted to a half scowl, half smirk.
"Like I'm gonna let you win, dumbass!" he shouted back, catching up to Hinata slowly.
"Last one there buys popcorn!" the smaller male called back.
"I already said I was paying, idiot!" Kageyama snapped, willing himself to go faster.
By the time they got to the theater they were both panting. It wasn't too long a distance, but running all the way was certainly a workout. Despite the slight exhaustion, Hinata was beaming at the taller male and Kageyama was smiling back, a small, Kageyama smile. They headed into the theater together, Hinata choosing a movie based off of a recommendation from Kenma. Kageyama was thankful, he wouldn't have had any idea what to choose. It was a modern fantasy about monsters that used the internet to travel and influence humans, not something he would have been interested in, but it was entertaining enough. He was happy to see that Hinata was into it at least. He had the urge to reach for Hinata's hand. What was surprising to him was just HOW BADLY he wanted to. He suddenly hoped Hinata hadn't noticed how much he was looking over at him. While they were quiet and didn't really interact the whole time, Kageyama was comfortable, though he did feel a jolt run up his spine when he accidentally brushed his hand against Hinata's, though the smaller male didn't seem to notice.
After the movie, Kageyama led Hinata out of the theater, all the while listening to the smaller male recount the things he liked about it. Kageyama led him to the park, enjoying just listening to Hinata chatter. The sun wasn't setting yet, but it was drawing closer to the horizon. He smiled, allowing his expression to soften and fully express itself to his emotions. They sat on a bench in a little spot against a thick line of trees, where they could see pretty much all of the park in all of its beauty, both natural and artificial. With the trees to their back and the beautiful paved path extending out in either directions to weave its way through the spots of grass and plants, Kageyama couldn't help but think that this was perfect. A blush crept over his face as Hinata smiled up at him, his eyes dazzling and his face brilliantly highlighted in the golden sunlight. Kageyama was sure now, his feelings for Hinata were romantic ones. That was when his heart leapt into his throat. He hadn't done anything, but Hinata had closed the distance and gently kissed Kageyama. He didn't kiss back, but he didn't pull away either. He was completely dumbstruck.
"H-Hinata?" he asked softly, nervous and unsure. The smaller male, looking equally shy.
"S-sorry, I should have asked" Hinata replied, still looking into Kageyama's eyes, practically begging for some form of reassurance. This wasn't supposed to be a date, right? Kageyama was just sorting out his feelings. Then...Hinata...he feels the same way? Maybe this was a date then.
"Don't apologize" Kageyama's voice was a whisper, the words almost catching in his throat as he gently, but firmly squeezed Hinata's hand with his own. "Don't you ever apologize for that." He leaned in and kissed Hinata again, a breeze picking up in a way that Kageyama would have found cliche and dramatic had he not devoted his entire focus to kissing Hinata.
They are soft. He thought. Hinata's smaller frame drew closer to press against Kageyama's side. When Kageyama drew away, Hinata pressed his forehead against the taller male's.
"You're like the wind beneath my wings, Tobio" he whispered in a sweet tone. Kageyama went dark red, the line was cheesy, but effective, especially when he heard his given name on Hinata's tongue.
"That line was super lame" the brunette groaned, closing his eyes.
"You're still blushing" Hinata giggled, pecking his cheek. Their fingers intertwined and Hinata leaned his head against Kageyama's shoulder. So cliche. Kageyama groaned internally, but couldn't help but smile. He rested his cheek against Hinata's mess of curls and gave his hand a small squeeze, just enjoying the end of their date, watching the sun go down. Cliche? Maybe, but it was too beautiful for either of them to care.
