Jasper's POV
I run to her house and hid in the tree facing her room, Bella was on her bed reading a book. She looked so relaxed and happy there alone. I wondered if she preferred the solitude and the silence like me or if she just felt that she didn't fit yet in Forks.
Her father arrived a little while later and she got up from the bed and went upstairs to cook dinner. I took the chance to enter in her room through the open window. I looked first at the book, Wuthering Heights. Interesting choice, it looked like she had read it many times. Then I went quickly to check her closet and I had to agree with Rose. It wasn't a normal teenage girl wardrobe, there were a lot of baggy and comfortable clothes. Nothing to show off or to catch the boys' attention.
Bella Swan was different, and not just because of her gift. I then looked through her emails and I only found correspondence back and forth with her mother. The way they wrote to each other looked like more friendship than familial love.
I left quickly when I heard the Chief climbing up the stairs, I definitely didn't want to get shot.
I came back to the Cullens' house a bit more informed about of our future shield. I still didn't know what made her thick but I would find out. I wanted to befriend her and dissect every little nuance of her personality. She was an enigma and I wasn't used to not knowing people's feelings. Perhaps I had relied too much on that through the years.
The next day I saw her from afar trying and failing to open her locker. I approached her silently and I saw her scowling at the lock.
"May I help you Bella?" I asked politely.
She jumped and looked at bit spooked. It was nice to get a rise out of her.
I could feel the other students' curiosity now, everyone around was wondering why the elusive Jasper Hale was talking to the new girl. I turned my attention back to her then, not interested in the speculation of the students' body.
She bit her lower lip and nodded. "Thank you, Jasper, I'm sure that I've got the right numbers, but this lock is stuck."
I took the lock in my hands and after she gave me the numbers, I quickly unlocked it for her. She smiled at me then, and I felt almost like my heart was beating again. I was having the strangest reaction to this mysterious girl. "There, now it's open. It might have been a bit rusty."
"Yeah, who knows how many years the poor thing has been working." She said and then laughed.
The usual chill went through my body, her laugh was intoxicating. I laughed with her. "Right, then I will be going." Her smiled dimmed a little, perhaps she was enjoying my company. So, I took the chance and said. "What are you doing after school? Do you want to grab a coffee with me?"
Bella looked at me seriously, without my gift I didn't know how to interpret that look. I tried to look tame and hopeful. Something in the way I looked must have convinced her and she nodded. "Okay."
"I will wait at your truck then, if it's not a problem to give me a ride back home after the coffee." I told her.
"No problem." She whispered and I took off to class before she could change her mind.
After school I waited next to her truck, I saw her walking slowly towards me and I couldn't stop staring at her. She was beautiful with her 'girl next door' look, the way she didn't care about her look made her sexy in a very natural way. I've never been close to any human before, I never even had this curiosity about any other vampire.
She smiled at me and the opened her truck. I entered in the passenger's side and waited for her. She turned on her truck and we left the school park with many eyes on us.
"I don't know how you and your siblings can stand this kind of attention every time you enter into a room." She said softly.
I laughed. "I honestly don't care and Rose adores the attention. But it can be overwhelming sometimes."
"I can understand why they look at you, but why do they look at me? It's not like there is much to look at." Bella said, her eyes on the road. I could detect her nervousness by the way she was biting her lower lip.
I turned to look at her and smiled. "You are beautiful Bella, I'm sure I'm not the first one to say to you."
She blushed then and shook her head. She didn't say anything else until we parked at the diner. Then she turned to look at me. "Jasper, I have a mirror and I can see myself in it. There isn't anything beautiful to look at. Jessica and Lauren are beautiful, I could at best be considered pretty."
I moved closer to her, her scent intoxicating. I didn't feel the call of her blood, but definitely her body and her eyes were like magnets to me, pulling me closer. I exerted my iron will and stopped a few inches from her face. "I think you are beautiful Bella and I'm not used to lie."
A strand of her brown hair fell on her face, I slowly lifted my hand and took it. Her eyes were wide and open, she didn't move and I didn't breathe. Her hairs were as soft as I imagined. Slowly I tucked the strand behind her ear. We stared at each other like nothing else existed outside of me and her.
"You are beautiful." I whispered and then I touched her face and leaned closer. I gave her the time to move back or to push me away but she didn't move and I brushed my lips against hers. Then I moved back.
Bella closed her eyes for a moment and then she opened them again. She cleared her throat but it seemed she couldn't say anything.
I shook my head and smiled, I knew how she felt because that little kiss has overwhelmed me too.
The magic bubble we were in was broken by a horn honking in the road next to the dinner. We both jumped then and after a moment we smiled at each other.
We then went to the dinner but I didn't remember much of it. My mind was stuck on the texture and softness of her lips. When later she took me home I thanked her and got in. I didn't want to share with the others what had happened today so I just got out from the kitchen and went hunting. I was a step closer to have Bella for myself, but I couldn't underestimate Edwards' charm.
In the forest I was sitting on a tree when my phone started ringing, "Peter, how are you doin' brother?"
"I'm great. Care to tell me what's goin' on with you? I have this strange feeling that something big has happened today." He said.
I laughed then, his gift was strange but a the same time was spot on. "I kissed a human today."
"And is she still alive?" he replied.
"Alive, beautiful and…" I stopped then shocked at what I was going to say, because my mind had just whispered mine.
"Major, you might want to be careful." Peter told me seriously.
"I will, I have to go but I will call you back soon." I said. Peter was used to my mood swings so I was sure he didn't get offended.
I had a lot to think about, but mostly I wanted to relieve the moment I kissed Bella Swan for the first time and the feelings she evoked in me. I wondered how she felt and I was happy that I couldn't read her feelings because I liked challenges and she sure was the biggest one I had encountered in the last fifty years.
