Hello everyone, this is going to be my first story in a long time. I know I'm rusty and I would love any feedback you can provide. I'm writing this story for a number of reasons, mainly because my girlfriend and I watched Onward and loved it. (She cried a lot at the end). Our three-year anniversary is coming up on May 1st and I have been trying to get back into writing so I figure I would try to write something for her. I'm posting this to fanfic as a way to try to motivate myself to do it. I used to write 1000 words a day and upload them, and I would love to get back to somewhere around there. I hope everyone enjoys this.

Long ago, the world was full of wonder. It was adventurous. It was exciting and best of all there was magic, and I found that out last year when I turned 16 and was thrust onto a quest to find a magic gem to resurrect my father for one day. A lot of things happened on that quest, but you already know about that. Our story takes place a year later, a few days before my 17th birthday.

*Beep beep beep* I woke up and pawed at my alarm clock. I pulled myself out of bed and got dressed. Another long night working on my school project left me tired but I was on track for finishing it on my birthday. My desk was covered in papers and Barleys Quest of Yore reference cards. I had been researching almost all night, and I was in no mood to be going to school, but Barley promised I could drive Gwenaver the second after school. So I begrudgingly ruffled through the papers and found my phone, then grabbed my backpack from beside the desk, clipped my dad's wizards staff to the side and descended the stairs.

Before I reached the bottom I could hear the sounds of my mom working out. "Unleash your inner warrior." came from the tv along with other motivational jargon, and just like every morning mom was working out in front of the tv. "Morning mom," I said as I passed by.

"Morning Ian." She called back as Blasey ran in from the kitchen and she wrapped herself around my legs.

"Hey there Blasey," I reached down and scratched her scales. "Want some toast?" She happily ran through my legs in figure eights. "Alright come on." We started to walk through the hall but Barley jumped out of his room and grabbed me in a headlock.

"Halt! Who passes the realm of Barley?" I struggled for a second then slipped out of the lock.

"Barley, you can't just attack people outside of your realm without provoking war!' I playfully shot back.

"Does this mean that the Lightfoot realms must engage in large scale combat?" He drew two metal swords from the inside door to his room and tossed one to me then raised it in a defensive stance.

"The realms of Lightfoot are not going to war," Mom called from the living room.

Barley frowned, "Alas the queen has spoken." He grabbed the sword from me and tossed it back into his room. "Oh well, maybe another time."

"You know if we were really going to war than it I wouldn't be using that sword." I smiled and nudged the staff. I slid by and started making breakfast. Barley shrugged and returned to his room and rock music started to pour out.

I made some toast and tossed a slice to Blasey. She ate it all in one bite, happily ran in a circle once and ran off back to her lair. Outside the bus honked. "Oh crap, bye mom I'm off to school." I ran out the backdoor, but stopped and stuck my head back in. "Remember I'm not going to be home right after school, I have the club."Without waiting for a response I jog to the bus, I grabbed a seat near the back and set my bag down next to me. I pulled out my notebook and checked my list.
