Academy City, also known as Academy City of Science and Technology, is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the Tokyo Metropolitan Employment Area.

As the city's name suggests, it is a city of several schools and institutions of higher learning from kindergarten to university level that learn side-by-side along with the scientists who research on psychic powers and higher technology, the latter being one of the primary reasons for its establishment. It is the most advanced city in the world and its technology is said to be 30 years ahead of the world. Academy City is composed of 23 districts, called School Districts which are simply numbered from one to twenty-three and each of these districts have a specific purpose.

Located just west of Tokyo, it is apparently located in a region where there is a constant wind that flows within the city, allowing its wind turbines to generate power. The climate in Academy City is probably the same in Tokyo and other surrounding areas, though through its technological advances they are able to predict the weather much more accurately and can actually give schedules on when the weather might change. Academy City is roughly 1/3 the size of Tokyo.

Our story begins in District Number 7 where lies, A Certain Hospital that A Certain Misfortunate Boy constantly visits whenever he has sustained an injury.

On August 31, 2 patients entered the hospital that night, both had sustained fatal injuries from a fight that led them almost to their death beds. Luckily, the ambulance arrived just in time to bring them to the hospital. One of the patients is a researcher for the Level 6 shift project who had gotten shot in the stomach. The other patient is Accelerator, the 1st ranked and the strongest esper in Academy City. He is a level 5 with the ability called Vector Manipulation, which allows him to modify the vector values of anything he touches. His injuries were far more severe as it was located in the brain. More specifically, in the frontal lobe where he makes his complex calculations for his ability.

The two patients were taken straight to the ER. While there are amazing doctors here, one particular doctor can be considered God. He has saved countless lives from the brink of death many times over. His famous quote is. "As long as you come back alive, I can save you." This quote belongs to the one and only Heaven Canceller. This doctor could be easily recognizable by his frog-like face. This doctor was working on Accelerator's injuries first as it was far more life-threatening than the other patient. He began his surgery as soon as he could.

When the surgery began, everything went smoothly. Although the brain was far too damaged to be fully repaired, he still managed to keep the brain working, which meant that he won't die, but his ability to think, see, hear or even speak properly has deteriorated. The way around this is to implant a Choker-style electrode around his neck that would use the Misaka Network to compensate for his disabilities. He would still need to ask the sisters though if it is possible for Accelerator to use the network, but he will get to that soon. For now, he would still need to build the electrode. As he is about to go out to look for parts, the brain monitor that is monitoring his brain, suddenly set out a huge alarm. Panicked, Heaven Canceller went to check the monitor to see what's wrong.

Now some people would call this bad luck or just a series of certain circumstances, but the doctor knew better. After all, he always had to treat the most unfortunate and injured boy in the hospital countless times so he believes in luck to some extent. He wanted to curse out the boy's catchphrase as he stared at the report of the monitor. Accelerator's brain started bleeding again but in the most unlikely of places. Instead of the front lobe where he sustained the injury, the bleeding is in the hippocampus. He really was surprised that this is even happening in the first place. Reacting quickly, he goes through his medicine cabinet to find a syringe that would immediately stop the bleeding in the brain. When he found it, he went straight to Accelerator's exposed brain and located the bleeding hippocampus. He injected the drug in there and used up the syringe. The bleeding came immediately to a halt and he sighs in relief. But now, he realized that the damage was far more severe than he expected and he wasn't sure if the injury would continue to worsen, but he will still need to leave to gather parts to start building the electrode. He called the nurse to watch over Accelerator to tell him if any changes occur while he leaves for a while to find the parts he needs to help him. Little do they know that even when the bleeding didn't last long, the damage was already done and it won't be seen until later on.

It was going to be heartbreaking.

September 1

The surgery went smoothly for the two patients. Aside from the sudden bleeding of Accelerator in his brain, everything else went swimmingly for him and he is currently resting in his room. As for the researcher, there were no further complications and her surgery was a great success and she is also resting in her room. As the doctor continued to read Accelerator's medical report, the door opened without warning and the appearance of a little girl came up to the chair in front of him and sat down.

The girl is wearing a blue-spotted dress with a white coat and sandals. She has chestnut eyes and hair, which has one strand of hair standing up like an ahoge. And her small stature indicates that her age would be at least 10 years old.

"Hey Hey, is my child alright asks MISAKA MISAKA as she is worried for Accelerator's safety and is restless as MISAKA MISAKA cannot visit him to check up on him."

Her name is Last Order and is the 20001st sister of the Level 6 shift project. The administrator of the Misaka Network and the child that Accelerator saved. She is here right now because of Accelerator's saving act that not only saved the sisters, but also Academy City as a whole.

Heaven Canceller placed down his papers to look at the worried face of Last order. She was brought here last night along with the two patients, but since she wasn't injured, she was just placed in a room to let her recover. She woke up quite early and asked if she could visit Accelerator. Sadly, he had to decline her request as the surgery was recently finished at the time and told her to come back later. But ever since then, she has grown restless as she paced around the hospital hallways, worried sick for Accelerator. She has been talking with the other sisters to relieve her stress for the moment, but it didn't seem to work as well as she is still worried about Accelerator.

He gave Last Order a strained smile. "Don't worry, he is perfectly ok just like I said, he is just in his room, recovering for the moment. I will let you know when you can visit him." As he grabs his papers to continue reading, Last Order suddenly asks.

"Something is wrong isn't there? says MISAKA MISAKA as she can see the strained smile on the doctor's face."

Despite looking like a ten-year-old, she is quite perceptive, picking up little cues very easily. He knew he couldn't hide this from her for long. It is better for her to know now rather than later when she visits him. He shifts his papers to Accelerator's medical report and reads over it one more time before putting it down and looking at Last Order, who is putting up a worried look towards him. He felt guilty about this. If he stopped the bleeding earlier… then everything would have been fine.

"Yes, there is, I'm afraid." He takes a deep breath to explain. "You see, there were some complications with the surgery. The surgery went alright until suddenly Accelerator's brain began to bleed again without notice. Now, normally it would have made sense, considering the surgery was still incomplete, but the problem is the brain was bleeding in a place where the injury did not even reach yet, but somehow agitated it to bleed. And this part of the brain will be quite painful for you to hear from me." He takes a moment to look at Last Order, her face seemed to get sadder and sadder by the minute. He wanted to stop and lie but he pressed on. "The part of the brain that was bleeding was his hippocampus. Now since Accelerator hasn't woken up yet, I am not sure the extent of the damage yet. However, there is a possibility that he may have lost his memories in the process. Until I can figure out how much he lost, I'm afraid all we can do is hope that he hasn't lost too much."

Last Order was on the verge of tears. She truly wasn't expecting this kind of news at all. Sure, she did expect a lot of things to happen. She knows that all his calculation ability and all his motor functions have been compromised so she allowed the doctor to build the electrode to aid him in his life. She would allow the electrode to access the network so that Accelerator can live again a semi-normal life, although with his ability to calculate has been severely impaired, he could still try to live a normal life. However, that particular news broke her, losing his memories of himself and her was her breaking point. Her thoughts were transmitted throughout the network so they can receive the news of this development. All Last Order could do was to hug the doctor and cry on his shirt. The doctor just continued the embrace, stroking her hair as she continues to cry out in anguish and despair, knowing that the Accelerator that protected her could be potentially gone forever.

All he could do now is to comfort her.

Despite Academy City being 30 years in the future, the type of room you would find in the hospital is the same as the outside world. The hospital room is a concrete pen with a window the size of a biscuit tin lid. It has a stagnant smell like it's cleaned with plain water instead of disinfectant. The bed sits low to the ground, the frame baring the signs of rust and the mattress worryingly thin. An IV bag was on the left of the bed, connected to a figure underneath the blanket. There is also a crutch in front of the bed.

The figure stirs up from his slumber and slowly rises up from his blanket. He takes a look around the room, confused about what he is doing here in the hospital. He stroked his head for a moment and noticed a bandage on it. He puts his legs down on the left side and attempts to walk before almost falling down and forcing him to grab the IV pole and the frame of the bed. He finds a crutch in front of his bed. He reaches out to it and uses it to position himself properly so he doesn't fall off again. He sees a small mirror, placed on the desk in front of him. He walks up to the desk carefully and picks up the mirror to view his appearance.

He sees a skinny teen who has pale skin, moppy white hair, and red eyes. He also sees the bandages that are clearly wrapped around his head, indicating that he somehow suffered some sort of brain damage or a concussion. He is wearing a standard hospital gown, furthering his belief that he is indeed in the hospital. He also seems to have an androgynous appearance, although he could tell that he is male.

He stared at the mirror which was facing back at him with confused eyes. He looks at himself before looking back at the mirror again, only having one question in mind.

"Who the hell am I?"
