Author's Note:
Hi everyone! It's been sooooooo long since I've posted a story! I've just gotten busy with life and whatnot but now that we're all quarantined I figure now I have no excuse not to post lol.
I've recently gotten attached to the show Henry Danger. It's been on my tv a lot during this quarantine and there legit was nothing else on to watch lol. I've always liked the show but I swear now that the show has ended, my heartstrings are like wtf!
Anyways, I've been thinking about posting this for a little while now but never got around to writing it. Now that I have the time, I figure it's the perfect time to post!
ALSO:
For those readers who don't know me, I like angst. A lot. I will try to make sure to post any trigger warnings if any before each chapter starts. I also write in 1st person and will always write whose point of view is being featured.
Okay. Here we go! I hope you enjoy!
Henry's POV
"It was a perfectly windy night in Swellview. I just had brushed my teeth and was getting ready for-"
"Okay, when I asked you for more details I didn't mean those details," Charlotte said while rolling her eyes. I just looked at her and smiled because I loved getting on her nerves. It was Friday afternoon thank God and we were at our lockers grabbing our homework for the weekend. Well Charlotte was. I just stood there and watched. "Are you going to go or not?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm not sure yet to be honest."
"Have you talked to Ray about it yet?" She asked.
"Talked to Ray about what?" Jasper asked cutting in, putting an arm around me.
"You know…" Charlotte hinted.
"Oh yeahhhh!" Jasper exclaimed, way louder than necessary. "Yeah bro have you talked to him yet?"
"No, okay! I haven't. I slammed my locker closed and leaned on it, half expecting either of my friends to chime in. "I don't know how."
"Well, it's not like you're quitting yet," said Charlotte. Jasper nodded in agreement.
"I know. I just never really take a day off. Let alone an entire week. Remember how he reacted when we wanted to leave work 5 minutes early to watch Galaxy Wars 10? He didn't speak to me for 2 days!" I started to pull on my hair. I do weird things when I get anxious. This was one of them.
"Relax," said Charlotte. She shut her locker and all three of us headed for the door. "We'll go with you."
Later
"Okay. Run it by me again," Charlotte said. I took a deep breath.
"I just go in there, aaaaand what if he's in a bad mood? You know how he gets on random days." I started pacing back and forth, careful that I wasn't loud enough for Ray to hear.
"Dude chiiiilllll," Jasper blabbed. He held me by the shoulders which helped me steady my feet. "You're really over thinking this." Just then, a door opened.
"Dammit Schwoz, you said that you made enough!" Ray stomped into the Man Cave.
"I'm sorry! They smelled so good, I guess she just couldn't resist!" Schwoz defended, placing an empty tray on the table.
"Enough of what?" Jasper asked, pointing to the tray.
"Cookies," Schwoz replied, pulling one out of his pocket carefully so Ray couldn't see.
"Wait. Why are we making cookies?" Charlotte asked.
"Because I was bored," Schwoz whined. There's nothing else to do!" He pointed at the bare computer screens.
"Yes. And you said you made enough for everyone!" Ray exclaimed. He was sitting by the tubes staring at the floor.
"I did!" Schwoz defended. "But my sister smelled them from upstairs."
"The one who looks like a horse?" Asked Jasper.
"Yes. She smelled the cookies and ate them all! I swear it!"
"You're a dirty liar Schwoz, I mean it!" Ray yelled, getting up from his place by the tubes.
"Whoa, okay. Ray, easy," Charlotte said. "It's not the end of the world. Schwoz will make you more, right Schwoz?"
"I will?" Schwoz asked. Charlotte shot him a look and then gestured inconspicuously towards me, increasing my anxiety in the process. "Oh haha I mean, yes of course I will. Charlotte, Jasper, why don't you come help?"
"Great idea!" Jasper said obviously. I widened my eyes at them and Charlotte mouthed the word 'sorry' as all three of them left the Man Cave. I ran a hand through my hair and tugged on the ends, taking another deep breath. I could hear Ray muttering something under his breath, with every other word being either 'Schwoz' or 'cookie.'
"Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo no cookies huh?" I asked, putting my hands in my pockets. Ray just looked at me. There was an awkward silence and I screamed at Ray in my mind to say something or laugh or do anything to fill the void. The little voice inside my head told me to stop being such a scared little boy and just do it so I did. "Listen, uhhh.. I uhh have something to ask you. Tell you. No ask you." Ray just continued to look. I just stood there with one hand in my hair and the other fumbling to fit into my pocket. I cleared my throat.
"I need to take a temporary leave from work?" I stated more than asked. Ray's eyebrows furrowed and I felt like I just got shot.
"Oh?" said Ray, his eyes not leaving me. I caught myself making those weird duck lips. Remember when I said I do weird things when I get anxious? This was another one of those things.
"I, I uh I promise I'll come back eventually," I stated, backing up in defense.
"Eventually?" Ray repeated. I grew more anxious and it felt like I was gonna fall through the floor of the Man Cave. I prayed Ray would catch on to my obvious anxiety and just tell me to go home.
"Yeah, uh. I, uh," I trailed off. I knew exactly what I wanted to say yet here I was, standing with my back against the elevator, duck lips on my face, one hand tangled in my hair, the other hand hanging out of my pocket.
"So, uh, how long we talking here? A week? A month? You realize what you're asking right kid?" Ray said, slamming a hand on the elevator door, his eyes matching mine.
"It should only be a week Ray! I promise. My sister won this thing. This contest thing. Um. Um. Her class gets to uh go see sharks or something. For the whole weekend. My mom wants me to chaperone her."
"Why can't your mom go?" Ray questioned.
"She can barely handle just Piper, let alone a whole class full of Pipers," I said. Ray chuckled and I finally was able to breathe for a minute.
"Yeah, I get that," he said. "So why can't your dad go?"
"He's away on business still," I replied. There was a long pause.
"So your mom, she- She's gonna be alone huh?" Ray asked.
"Dude."
"I'm just saying, with Kid Danger gone for the week… it's too risky. She's gonna need someone to 'protect' her," he said. I hated when he put air quotes around the word protect. Because I know he definitely does not mean protect.
"So can I go or what?" I asked. Another long pause.
"One week?" Ray asked.
"Not a day more!" I promised. Another very, very, excruciatingly long pause.
"Oh Fine." He said finally, rolling his eyes. I smiled and thanked him and gave him a quick hug which he reciprocated. It was a rare thing that happened, but when it did, it was nice. Just then Charlotte and Jasper came walking back into the Man Cave, with Schwoz trailing behind them.
"Oh come on! It was just one little zap!" Schwoz said, holding up a baking whisk.
"I don't like the way you bake cookies!" Jasper shouted, trying to use Ray as a shield.
"Why not? It was one little zap?" Schwoz defended.
"Schwoz, why are you out here when you should be in there making more cookies!" Ray shouted. He joined the fracas making exchanges with Schwoz and Jasper.
"So did you tell him?" Charlotte asked, walking over to me.
"Yeah."
"And how did he react?" She pushed.
"He just said 'fine'," I replied.
"That's it? 'Fine?'" Charlotte asked. The man who's currently about to commit a crime against Schwoz for cookies agreed to let you interview for another job?"
"Shhhhhhh!" I grabbed Charlotte by the arm and we walked farther away from the other three. "Okay I didn't actually ask him." Charlotte just stood there with her hands on her hips. "He was in a bad mood, I couldn't do it! I tried but the words just wouldn't come out."
"Dude, you leave for Bordertown in 3 days. You better hope those words come out fast," she snapped. But she was right.
"I know." I looked over at the scene happening by the computer screens. Ray was now chasing Schwoz around with the whisk and Jasper was heaving cookie dough balls at him.
"You sure you won't miss this place?" Charlotte asked. I laughed to myself.
"Nah, hahaha. It's time." I said. It was the truth though. It was time. I was getting older-about to turn 18. And Ray was getting angrier. Not at me in particular. But about everything. I'm not sure what happened to him, but something in him snapped. Now he gets angry at the drop of a hat. We all have been walking around on eggshells when we are near him. It doesn't help my anxiety at all which Ray doesn't understand anyway. But enough about that. I have three days until I leave, which means I have 2 days to figure out how to cover my lie. I don't know what I'm going to do or how I'm going to do it but I still managed to play it cool and join in on the cookie dough hurling and whisk slapping craziness that was my current job.
So what do you guys think? I have a lot planned for this story so I hope it gains a following. I hope to update very shortly! :)
