Hi Guys!

Here's my second one-shot. Again, I didn't have anyone read this to edit. So all mistakes are mine, and I take full credit for them! Hopefully, I did the characters and this moment justice. If anyone has any one-shot ideas for Upstead, send them my way. If I think I can give it what it deserves then I'll give it a try. If you haven't read my first one-shot, go check it out please:). We have to keep our Upstead love up while we wait it out for the new season. Upstead will rise in season 8. I know it! Hope you enjoy!

"Platts got the details. Flight leaves tomorrow. Have a safe trip." The words Voight just shouted at Hailey have been swirling around her mind since she was able to walk out of his office. Hailey slowly made her way to the locker room. She needed a few minutes to herself before she could go downstairs to see Platt to hear the details. She really can't believe what just happened. In Hailey's eyes, she did exactly what Hank would have done, SHOULD have done.

"It's only for a few weeks," she kept muttering to herself as she splashed water on her face. "It's only for a few weeks," she whispered again. She looked at herself in the mirror trying to recognize herself. Hailey knows her lines have been blurred. When she first came into this unit, she was the one who kept everyone on the straight path. She didn't do any of the 'grey' area things the Intelligent Unit worked by. But being in the unit this long made things blur for her. It didn't help that this year really threw her for a loop.

First, losing Cameron really effected her more than she would ever say. He wasn't just a C.I. to her, he was her friend, and when Cameron got murdered she was devastated. Not only was it devastating, but it was also even worse knowing who put out the hit on him, and the fact they had to still work with the guy as nothing happened. Like Cam's life meant nothing, and to Hailey, that wasn't true. Cameron was more than nothing. So of course when Hailey got the chance, she did the same thing Darius did to Cameron. You know, just give out a little information to give Darius what he deserved. And if Hailey was being honest with herself, it didn't bother her what she did, but that scared her. Hailey told herself it was a one-time thing, that she has herself under control.

Then, Jay… Almost losing Jay forever really messed her up. She had no control over her emotions or actions while she was trying to find him. She was willing to shoot a guy right out there in the open just to get to him. She also did the exact same thing she fought with Jay about over a year ago when his father died. Before she would never want to use someone innocent as leverage but now she didn't care. She was actually the person who came up with the idea this time to use the innocent son as leverage to get the father talking. So again, she wasn't bothered by her behavior because it was Jay, she will always do EVERYTHING to save Jay. It wasn't until later that Vanessa made her really realize why it didn't bother her. "Things change when it involves someone you love," Hailey told herself.

Which lead her to tonight. At first, the thought of not being partnered with Jay and having to deal with the rookie Vanessa wasn't something she wanted to do. But now, Vanessa is family. She is the little sister Hailey never had. If Hailey really treated Vanessa like a daughter, always looking out for her and wanting to protect her. So tonight when she planted the drugs, it was again out of love. To help someone she loves. "Why can't Hank see or realize that?" Hailey thought.

Hailey can't describe all the emotions she is going through right now because she's gone through them all. Yeah, she is angry and frustrated, but those emotions aren't what she's stuck at. The emotions that Hailey is now going through is sadness, and fear.

She doesn't want to leave Jay and Vanessa. "I finally got Jay back and now I have to leave him," Hailey thought. "And who's going to protect and look out for them while I'm gone?"

A lot can happen in a few weeks, and that scared the crap out of her. With one final splash of water on her face, Hailey turned off the faucet, grabbed her stuff from her locker, and headed to see Platt.

Platt was looking down working on something on her desk when Hailey walked down the stairs. The gate banging had Platt raise her head and give Hailey a look. Hailey couldn't tell if it was a look of disappointment or pity. Maybe it was a mixture of both. Hailey will never know or ask.

"Alright, your flight is tomorrow morning at 9:00. You need to get to the airport at 7:30. When you land in New York there will be someone there to pick you up." Platt said in her monotone voice.

Hailey really expected her to sound angrier, or teasing, or something. She didn't expect her to make it like this was nothing.

"Okay, thanks," Hailey said as she grabbed her papers and turned to leave.

Hailey didn't even make it to the door before she heard Platt say, "They will be alright. Just make sure you take care of yourself. They will be alright."

Hailey's eyes started to water when she heard Platt say that. She didn't have to ask who she meant. They both knew who Platt meant with her "they" She turned to look at Platt with her watery eyes and whispered, "How do you know?"

Platt tilted her head and with a sad smile said, "Because they will be too concerned thinking about you to do anything stupid. Plus, they will look out for each other. They know how you feel about the other person even if they don't realize how you feel about them." And at that Platt raised her one eyebrow and said, "7:30. Don't be late."

The screen on Hailey's dashboard showed 12:26 a.m. She knew she had to call him, him being Jay. It was actually the first thought that came to her mind as she was sitting in Hank's office when he told her she was leaving. The thing was she knew she wanted, no needed to call him, but she was so afraid. What would she say? How will he react? Will this change things?

When Hailey was stopped at the light she decided to just bite the bullet and make the call. This was the first time she was actually happy her phone was connected to her car because it just felt easier on her to say "Call Jay" rather than pressing the buttons herself. She didn't want to chicken out or wait any longer. She knows what he went through before with Erin. How she left without even a goodbye. She couldn't and wouldn't do that to him. He deserves a phone call. He deserves more, but all she can do for now is call.

The ringing of the call filled the speaker of her car as she waited for him to pick up. "Come on, pick up Jay," Hailey muttered as she waited. She took a second to look at the screen and stared at the picture of them. It was from earlier this week during the case. Rojas took it of them after she cat-called them from the first floor when they were undercover. It was Hailey's new favorite photo because they were both smiling so big and laughing. It was always like pulling teeth getting Jay to smile for pictures. He can be so stubborn as a child sometimes when it came to pictures. But in this shot, he looked so happy, and she did too, so of course, she made it his contact picture on her phone.

"Hailey?" Jay said in a sleepy voice before he quickly added, "Are you alright? What's wrong? Why are you calling so late? Where are you?"

"Woah, slow down Jay," Hailey replied. She didn't expect him to get so worked up. She also didn't expect him to be sleeping when she called. "I'm alright. I just needed to talk to you before the morning…" Hailey trailed off

"You sure everything's alright? You usually don't call so late. I figured you would be spending some time with Vanessa because of the case you know." Jay said.

"Well… everything will be alright. But I have some news. But before I tell you, I want you to know it wasn't my choice, okay?" Hailey said as she continued driving home.

"Oh geez, I'm not sure I like the sound of this already. What is it?" Jay said softly.

"Hank signed me up and is sending me to New York to work for the FBI as a loan officer. It's only for a few weeks and I will be back, okay? I'll be back." Hailey reassured.

There was a long silence that filled the car, but you can hear Jay breathing through the line. After a long breath was released Jay said, "Why?"

"Hank and I got into a little disagreement, well more like an argument. Hank wants me to figure out how to be myself again." Hailey said trying to keep it simple. She didn't want Jay to think of her differently because of what she did. For the first time, she finally started to realize that this isn't who she is, this isn't who she wants to be.

"What? What is he talking about? Figure out how to be yourself again? What does that even mean?" Jay said.

Hailey took a deep breath. "It's about a lot of things I've done recently, Jay. He's right though. I need to get my mind straight again."

Again there was a brief silence before Jay started with, "It's not like you had a choice in this…" Jay trailed off. "You said it's only for a few weeks, right?"

"Yes, Jay. Just a few weeks and then I'll be back again. I promise." Hailey said adamantly.

"I wish I could go with you. I meant it when I said I'd go where you go" Jay said the way he said it, you can feel his small smile through the phone.

"I know, Jay. I wish you could come too… I meant it too, but I'll be back." Hailey continued to reassure and at this point, she wasn't sure if it was him or her she was reassuring anymore.

Jay said in a hopeful voice, "How about I come over and we have a drink? You know to do our 'thing' before you leave?"

"You know I would seriously like nothing more than to do our thing right now, but I have to still pack and tell Vanessa. I also have an early flight …Hailey said disappointedly.

"Alright, I understand," Jay said. "Hailey, will you promise me one thing though? Will you please take care of yourself? -I…" Jay didn't finish this sentence.

"I promise as long as you promise the same," Hailey replied back.

"I promise," Jay assured. "You know what? I thought I was the dummy in this partnership. You know, the one who gets in trouble and yelled at?"

"Ha, you are, Jay. But I had a moment and thought, 'why not take a turn at that title'," Hailey laughed back. "Alright, I just made it home. Time to break the news to Rojas." Hailey remarked parking her car in the driveway.

" Alright, you show them how it's done, Hailey. You're the best cop I know, and I hope you realize that again, okay. I'll see you soon. Bye, Hailey" Jay replied.

"Bye, Jay" Hailey whispered back as they both hung up the phone. Hailey grabbed her stuff from the backseat of her car and headed up her walk. One person down, one more to go, she thought to herself.

The next day came too quickly for Hailey's liking. Her obnoxious alarm clock woke her up bright and early with its loud BEEP, BEEP, BEEP noises. She wasn't ready for the day, but it was happening no matter what. As she got ready for her flight, Vanessa helped her get her bag down the stairs. They had a good emotional talk last night when Hailey got in. Vanessa felt as if this was all her fault because she knew Hailey was just trying to protect her not telling Hank about her deleting the video. But what Vanessa didn't know was Hailey didn't tell her the real reason as to why Hank is sending her on this trip.

Finally, Hailey made her way down the stairs, and the two girls gave each other one last hug. Vanessa asked the night before if she wanted her to drop her off, but Hailey declined. She said this was something she wanted to do alone.

"Take care of things around here and yourself, Vanessa," Hailey muttered again when she pulled away from their hug.

"Of course, and you do the same. We will be okay here." Vanessa answered. It didn't take a rocket scientist to know who Vanessa meant when she said: "we".

The two girls gave one last smile to each other before Hailey grabbed her bag and went outside. It did but also didn't surprise her when she saw him in her driveway. He was leaning against his truck with his hands in his pockets just waiting. Who knows how long he's been waiting.

"What are you doing here, Jay?" Hailey said, "I told Vanessa I just wanted to be alone." Hailey tried to shrug this off like this was no big deal.

Jay gave Hailey a smirk and answered, "Yeah, well that's not gonna happen" as he opened his passenger door. "It's our thing."

Hailey's eyes started to water because she remembered this exact conversation between them, inside her front door, right after the Booth case. Hailey looked down and rolled her suitcase to Jay's truck, and got into the passenger seat while Jay put her bag in the backseat.

After Hailey buckled herself in and Jay hopped into the driver seat, she noticed there was a coffee for both of them in the cup holders. She also noticed there was another bag from her favorite breakfast place, and it smelled delicious. Jay looked at where she was staring and stated, "I figured it wouldn't be our thing if we weren't drinking anything. I also figured you haven't had a bite to eat since last night so I bought you your favorite for the road."

"Thanks." Hailey gave Jay a sad but thankful smile and took a sip of her coffee. It doesn't slip her mind that he really does know everything about her. From her favorite coffee to meals, or the fact he knew she really needed this, him before she took this flight.

They drove the short distance to the airport in peaceful silence, drinking their coffee's, and Hailey eating her breakfast. They were really just taking in this moment. The moment of sitting there, just the two of them, because they knew this wasn't going to happen again for a few weeks.

When they finally reached the airport, they both just sat there for a few seconds together. They didn't want this to end. They both reluctantly got out of the truck to take care of some things. Jay went to the backseat to grab her bag, while Hailey went to throw out her trash.

Eventually, after trying to put this off for as long as they could, Jay and Hailey were standing in front of each other with her suitcase by her side.

"Alright, like I said yesterday, take care of yourself and show them how great of a cop you are. But like don't impress them too much. I don't want them to offer you a job or something. I need my partner back. We are good together you know." Jay joked and gave her a teasing smirk. He was trying to cheer her up. He didn't like to see her eyes shining with tears like they were right now.

Hailey gave out a tearful laugh and smiled at Jay. "Of course, and you better keep yourself safe. No more bullets. Remember, lead is bad for your health!" she exclaimed back.

Jay and Hailey stared at each other for a moment before pulling each other in for a tight hug. This was the first time they really gave each other a big, real hug. They stood close together hugging, not saying a thing, just breathing each other and this moment in. Of course, they have put their arms around each other for pictures, and even when they were getting shot at while in the van a year ago, but this felt different. This felt more emotional for both of them. There was a meaning behind this hug. Like they were trying to convey what neither one of them could put into words for a while now. The "I love yous" that haven't found there way out yet.

"I'm going to miss you. Goodbye Hailey," Jay said into Hailey's ear.

"I'm going to miss you too. And this isn't a goodbye, we are going to be texting and calling each other so much you might get sick of me," Hailey whispered.

"I could never," Jay chuckled back.

After a few minutes, they finally pulled away from each other with noticeably watery eyes. Nothing more was said as Hailey grabbed the handle of her suitcase and started walking towards the door. Not until she heard his voice one last time.

"Hailey!" Jay shouted. "Call me when you get there! And remember, we're good, and we're always going to be good." He gave her a small nod. "I'll be here when you come back. Look for the sign that says 'dummy's dummy'!" Jay said playfully with a smile.

Hailey rolled her eyes at Jay and gave out a real laugh for the first time since being in the van with him a few days ago. 'I needed that. Again, he always knows exactly what I need' Hailey thought. She gave him one last tilted head smile before going their separate ways. Because even if she was leaving, for now, they were still each other's anchors, partners, and best friends. They were each other's 'everyday' and that was and will never change.
