The Truth Behind the Light

Chapter 1

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Severus Snape was silent as he walked through the empty hallways leading back to his quarters in Hogwarts castle. His arms were crossed behind his back as his mind wondered to the years before he had started at Hogwarts when he had stayed safely in his childhood home with his son. He could barely remember the charcoal eyes his son had gotten from him and the unruly black hair he had inherited from his mother. Bellatrix had been on his mind more since the school year had ended, remembering the good times he had had with the woman that was his wife before the Dark Lord had fallen. She had been one of the first ones to be thrown into Azkaban when it was declared that the Potter Twins were the children who lived. Fury still welled up in his chest as he remembered the two people who had been considered his friends and had originally fought alongside him on the Dark side until they had been convinced to join the Light side shortly after their twins had been born.

"Severus is something on your mind my boy?" Headmaster Dumbledore questioned as he stepped out of the great hall. Severus stopped his musing as he glanced over his shoulder at the man he still subconsciously blamed for his son's death. Severus and Bella had left Hadrian in the care of Narcissa Malfoy while they had been on a mission from the Dark Lord. When Malfoy manor was raided by the ministry searching for any dark artifacts Narcissa had been spelled unconscious and both Draco and Hadrian neglected in their cribs. Even though it had been nearly eleven years Snape still wanted to know what had just happened during those three hours when the Aurors had been searching the house. He remembered how furious his brother in law Lucius Malfoy had been when he had returned home to find his wife unconscious, his son screaming, his nephew not breathing and his home a disaster.

"Just…thinking about my son. His birthday would have been today, and he would have been receiving his Hogwarts letter." Severus stated as he jerked out of his thoughts again.

"Zia and Harry Potter turn eleven today as well. I am hoping to receive their response to their Hogwarts letters soon so I can assign someone to take them to Diagon Alley." Dumbledore stated, completely ignoring the furious look that flashed across Severus' face at the mention of the twins that had managed to destroy the Dark Lord.

"If you would excuse me sir I am going to go check over my potion stores and possibly make a trip to the apothecary in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley." Severus stated, quickly turning and disappearing around a corner. He hand rested against the wall as he reached up to push his hair out of his face as his mind once again drifted back to the family that had been stripped from him.

4 Privet Drive, Little Whining

Zia Potter groaned softly as she shifted on her small bed, careful not to wake her brother as he laid curled up with his back against hers. She glanced around the small cupboard, noticing her brother had fallen asleep with his glasses on again.

"Wake up!" the shrill voice of their Aunt Petunia yelled, banging on the door of the cupboard. Harry groaned slightly as he shifted to sit up, nearly elbowing his sister in the side. He glanced at the door when she unlocked the door.

"Let me get dressed and I'll go start on breakfast while you change." Harry sighed, watching as she grabbed her hairbrush from the small shelf above their heads. He reached up to drag his fingers through his hair as he opened the door. Dudley suddenly shoved him backwards, sending him tumbling into Zia as she turned her back to grab one of her dresses. Both twins yelled as they went tumbling onto the floor in a heap.

"Get up you, lazy lumps!" Dudley laughed as he raced into the dining room. Harry groaned as he slowly moved to sit on his knees. Zia froze when she heard the sound of a crunch, realizing he had sat his knee straight on his glasses.

"Just great, great way to start an already awful day." Harry groaned before he picked them up, slipping out of the cupboard. He walked into the kitchen, seeing his aunt had already pulled out bacon and eggs that she intended for breakfast. He grabbed the frying pan, hoping he could still make it without burning it without his glasses. He couldn't help but listen to his uncle and cousin rant about unimportant things as he cooked breakfast, figuring Zia would be taking a quick first shower before she came down. His mind started to wander as he thought about the dream he had had the night before, remembering the soothing voice of a woman singing to him. He could barely remember the curly black hair that had seemed to cover his face and the feeling of her holding him against her chest.

"Boy! Watch what you're doing!" Petunia snapped, a sharp pain going through the back of his head as she hit him with a smaller frying pan that had been in her hand. He reached up to rub the aching spot before he turned his full attention back to the bacon in the skillet. Zia climbed down the stairs attempting to dry her hair with the ragged old towel she and Harry were allowed to use.

"Get the mail girl!" Vernon yelled from the dining room. Zia glanced at Harry as he placed the plates down in front of their uncle and cousin. She sighed, shaking her head before she walked towards the door. She bent down to pick up the stack of envelopes that laid on the floor below the mail flap. Two cream colored envelopes caught her attention, one having her name written on it and another with a name she didn't recognize. Both envelopes were sealed with an interesting red wax seal along their address and Cupboard under the staircase written on it below their names.

"Girl! Where is the mail?!" Vernon yelled causing her to jump. Zia quickly slipped the two envelopes into the pocket of her dress before she walked into the kitchen. Harry glanced up from the dishes when she handed the mail to their uncle before she walked over to him, smiling as she pulled her red hair into a high ponytail.

"I've got something for the both of us when we go outside to work in the gardens." She whispered as she grabbed a rag, starting to dry the wet dishes. Harry only nodded before reached up, rubbing the back of his head again. Zia glanced at him, raising an eyebrow for a moment before she figured their aunt had caught him with the frying pain again. She sighed, knowing it probably hurt a lot less than if she had forced him to burn his hand again on the hot stove.

"Alright you two. I'm holding a luncheon and I want you both to stay out of sight. I want you out of the house before noon and don't even think about coming back before sunset." Petunia stated, crossing her arms. Dudley smirked at the thought of his cousins being out of the house and more than likely at the park for most of the day. Harry groaned slightly before Zia lightly elbowed him in the stomach to gain his attention before Vernon noticed and decided to punish both of them. Both twins slipped outside, Zia heading over to her aunt's flower beds while Harry went to the shed to grab the lawnmower.

"Hey freaks! Mom says to get lost." Dudley yelled after they had both been locked outside for the entire morning. Harry glanced up from where he was working on the other side of the garden, pushing himself to his feet before he walked over to Zia. He helped his twin up, noticing she was rubbing the scar on her cheek that was a reminder of the car accident that had taken their parents nearly similar to lightening bolt scar on his forehead.

"Is it bothering you again?" he questioned as he opened the side gate, slipping out while Dudley was talking to his mum. They both walked through the quite neighborhood, each house looking the same as the next.

"Yes, but I just figured it's because it's an old scar. Old scars usually itch over time remember?" Zia commented as they walked. She reached down, pulling the two envelopes out of her dress pocket, handing the one with the name Hadrian on the front to Harry, figuring whoever had sent them knew his full name or had mixed the name up with someone else. Harry frowned slightly as he looked at it, the name Hadrian suddenly seeming to echo in his memories, struggling to remember who the woman's say it was.

"Harry? Want to open them together?" Zia questioned, gesturing to his.

"On the count of three. One…two…" he muttered.

"Three." She finished, tearing open the seal. She pulled the letter out, confusion written across her face as she read the paper inside. She couldn't help but notice that the paper was thicker than the normal paper everyone used, feeling more like parchment from the older books at the local library she liked to hide out at when Dudley felt like tormenting her into doing his homework for him.

"Dear Miss Potter, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment." Zia read; her brows knitted in confusion.

"Term begins on September 1. We await your owl no later than July 31. Yours sincerely Minerva McGonagall. Deputy Headmistress. Are they serious?" Harry questioned. Zia shrugged as they reached the local park, sitting on the swing. Harry moved behind her, gently starting to push her as they thought about the letter.

"This seems really odd and ironic that we received these on our birthdays." Zia stated softly.

"Seems like something Dudley and his little gang would do to get us into trouble with Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon. You remember what happens every time something involving 'magic' happens. It doesn't end well for either of us. I say we just forget about these letters and continue on with our miserable lives." Harry grumbled.

For nearly a week they continued to receive letters, each addressed the same way as the last. Zia hummed softly as she sat outside working in the garden. She glanced in the kitchen window noticing Harry was bent over the kitchen sink, scrubbing at plates that had been left over from dinner the previous night.

"Boy what is this?!" Vernon's voice suddenly thundered, causing her to jump. Harry quickly looked over his shoulder just as his uncle swung his fist, the large meaty hand connecting with his stomach, sending him hunched over in pain. Zia quickly scrambled to her feet, running towards the back door. She'd barely stepped into the kitchen when she noticed Vernon was clutching several letters in his hands. She knelt beside her brother, glaring at their uncle. Harry raised his head slightly, taking several deep breathes as he waited for the next hit.

"I will not have your freakiness taking over my house! If I find any more of these you will be sorry!" Vernon snapped before he turned and stormed back into the living room were Dudley and Petunia were. Harry groaned before he slowly pushed himself to his feet, half surprised they hadn't been sent to their cupboard or been denied lunch for the day. Zia glanced at him before she snuck into the hallway, standing out of sight as she listen to her aunt complain about magic and the crazy school her sister had gone to. She couldn't help but smirk as she realized perhaps the letters weren't a joke from their cousin. Harry placed his hand against the center of her back, gesturing towards the back door. They both slipped outside, Harry sinking onto the ground with his back pressed against the fence.

"Are you okay? I didn't realize I had missed grabbing the mail this morning." She questioned, kneeling down beside her brother, worried. He rubbed his stomach as he leaned his head back against the fence, closing his eyes for a moment. They both peaked over the fence when they heard a harsh knock on the front door, seeing a man dressed in all black standing there with a sour look on his face.

"Girl answer the door!" Petunia yelled from inside the house. Zia rolled her eyes before she walked back inside with Harry close behind. Harry stood back with his arms crossed as Zia pulled the front door opened.

"Who is it girl?" Vernon questioned, stepping into the hallway. Petunia froze when she saw who was standing at the door, her eyes darkening for a moment as she glared at her sister's childhood best friend.

"May I come in Tuni?" Severus questioned with a smirk.

"No! I will not have another freak in this house! I remember you, always doing strange things with my sister. Always thought you were just so special didn't you!" Petunia sneered, turning her nose up at the potions' professor. Harry and Zia both stood back with confused looks on their faces, knowing their aunt rarely ever spoke about their mother.

"It seems the twins have not received their letters and I was set by Professor Dumbledore to ensure they were taken to Diagon Alley to get the proper items they need to start term." Severus continued, not seeming to care as he pushed his way into the house. Harry frowned when the man's voice suddenly seemed to bring forth another memory of a man laugh, holding him and praise whatever milestone he had hit. Zia touched her brother's arm when he raised his hand to rub his forehead, knowing he was getting one of the headaches that were becoming fairly common.

"I will not have them go to some freak school where some crackpot old fool can teach them magic tricks." Vernon sneered, moving to force the front door closed. Severus raised an eyebrow before he raised his wand in a threatening manner. Vernon quickly took a step back, his face flushing red in anger. Severus held the letters out for the twins to take, the sour look returning to his face as he thought about his own son. He should be taking him shopping for his school items not the children of the very people that had helped destroy his family.

"We already read them sir. But there is no way that we…we are wizards. That just makes no sense once so ever." Harry objected. Severus raised an eyebrow as he looked at the boy that looked could nearly be the twin to his father if not for the fact he had his mother's emerald green eyes. He frowned noticing the crack lens of his glasses but didn't comment on it.

"Have either of you ever done things that you couldn't explain? Things that no normal person could understand why it happened or how?" he questioned, moving to stand in front of them. When both of the twins have him nervous nods he continued to explain accidental magic to them while he struggle to control his own magic at the sheer ignorance Petunia had provided. He waved his wand, silently transfiguring cloaks on them before instructing both of them to hold on tight, apparating straight into an alley of Diagon Alley. Harry stumbled slightly, grabbing his head at the sudden feeling that caused his stomach to jump. Severus raised an eyebrow at the boy's reaction, noticing Zia seemed concerned.

"Come along. We need to get your school robes fitted first than while those are being worked on we can continue on to get your books and other items. Though we do need to make a fast stop at Gringotts before we do any of that." Severus stated, leading them towards the large, pristine white building in the center of the alley. Harry glanced around in amazement once they had stepped inside.

"What are they?" Zia questioned softly as they walked through the rows of creatures sitting at high desks with scales and stacks of gold and bronze coins piled high. Severus glanced down at the eleven-year-old girl for a moment, a small smile slipping onto his face as he thought about his once overly curious friend before he turned his attention straight forward once again.

"Goblins Miss Potter. Creatures that have long since controlled the money of the wizarding world. This bank is one of the highest warded places in the world aside from perhaps Hogwarts itself." He explained. They stopped in front of a desk that sat alone in the center of the bank which Harry could only assume was the goblin in charge of everyone. The trip to their trust vault made both twins cringe, neither liking the feelings that cart left once they had stopped moving at such fast speeds. Once Severus had allowed them to each grab a small amount of money, just enough to get the items they would need for school as well as a small amount to spend, he led them to a store called Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions. Harry glanced around the shop in amazement, noticing another boy around his age standing on one of the podiums, a measuring tape magically floating and taking his measurements. He watched as a quill wrote down the correct measurements on a floating piece of parchment.

"Starting Hogwarts dears?" Madam Malkin questioned when she spotted the twins standing there. She gestured to the other empty podiums which Harry offered to let Zia go first. He stood back as the woman began to take the accurate measurements. Severus stood back with his arms crossed as he watched the twins interact, noticing neither of them spoke to the older witch unless she asked them a question. He silently pulled out one of the letters, opening it so he could pull out the required items list.

"Hello, I'm Draco Malfoy." The boy stated glancing at the twins with a smirk.

"I'm Zia and that's my twin Harry." She stated, deciding to introduce her brother since he wasn't a huge fan of speaking with strangers.

"Are you excited to be going to Hogwarts? I hoping I get sorted into the Slytherin House. My uncle Severus is the Head of House and also the potions professor." Draco explained, looking at Zia as she turned her attention back to the mirror. He puffed out his chest proudly as he went on to explain that nearly everyone in his family had been in Slytherin and that it was the best house at Hogwarts. Harry flinched slightly at how high maintenance the other boy seemed, reminding him a lot of Dudley. Severus raised an eyebrow when he recognized his nephew, instantly thinking about Bellatrix once again. He quickly cleared his throat, gaining the attention of the three children in the shop. Draco smirked when he realized his uncle was there before he turned his attention back to the Potter twins. His silver eyes lingered on the scar on Zia's cheek before he glanced at Harry. The black-haired boy shifted slightly before he turned to look at the different fabrics hanging around the shop. He knew the supplies list stated that they needed black, but he was amazed at all the enchanting designs. Several of the designs were clearly geared towards smaller children, some having moving trains or building blocks with the ABCs on them. He raised his fingers to touch a fabric that was labelled unicorn hair, nearly jumping back when he felt a tinge of magic spark his fingers.

"Carefully Harry. That particular fabric is quite rare, spun from the hair of the longest living unicorn known to wizarding kind." Madam Malkin explained as she glanced at the young boy. She frowned slightly when she noticed just how terrified he suddenly seemed to be. She hadn't meant to get onto the boy, noticing the girl seemed just as nervous if not more. Severus raised an eyebrow, slowly uncrossing his arm when Zia stepped off the podium walking over to her brother's side.

"Is everything alright?" Draco suddenly asked, curiosity visible on his face.

"Why don't you both let me finish your measurements real fast than you can go? I am sure there are many things you want to see of Diagon Alley before you return home for the days." Madam Malkin explained with a small smile, hoping to sooth the boy's worries. Harry quickly nodded before he climbed up onto the podium his sister had just vacated. He glanced at Draco, watching as the witch began to pin black fabric to ensure it fit in the right places.

"Come on Harry." Severus stated, rolling his eyes slightly. He understood that this was all clearly new to both of the twins, but he didn't want to linger any longer than they needed to. He hoped to return to Hogwarts before dark so he could check on the potions that he had left on stasis while he ran around doing errands for Dumbledore. He lingered in his thoughts as he led the twins towards Ollivanders Wand Shop. Once they'd stepped inside Harry glanced around amazed at all the wands that were stacked as high as he could see.

"Good afternoon." A soft voice spoke behind them causing them all to jump. Severus glanced over his shoulder, watching as the old man walked around the corner from the back.

"Hello." Zia responded awkwardly.

"Ah yes, yes. I thought I would be seeing you soon, Harry Potter. You have your mother's eyes. Seems like only yesterday she was in here herself, buying her first wand. Ten and a quarter inches long, swishy, made of willow. Nice wand for charm work." The old man said. He stepped closer to Zia examining her before he turned back towards the many shelves, starting to pull out boxes.

"The irony in the fact you have your father's eyes Zia Potter. He, on the other hand, favored a mahogany wand. Eleven inches. Pliable. A little more power and excellent for transfiguration. Well I say your father favored it…but it's really the wand that chooses the wizard, of course." Ollivander continued. Severus raised an eyebrow as he watched the hold man, his hand resting on his own wand for a moment. He took a deep breath as he struggled not to allow his mind to slip back to his son, wishing he was here to get his first wand but that was not something he would ever be able to enjoy. He sat down on the small couch like bench close to the door as he watched Zia test several of the wands, none of them seeming compatible with her magic.

"9.5 inches, Holly wood with a unicorn tail hair. Quite magnificent. Now Mr. Potter I believe it is your turn." Ollivander stated turning to the young boy. Severus raised an eyebrow as he tried wands with the same core as his sister before Ollivander seemed to give up at the thought of them sharing a core like most twins were known to do. Harry peaked over his shoulder as the wand maker searched for a specific wand.

"I wonder…" Ollivander trailed off as his fingers brushed against one box that was covered in dust. He pulled it out, looking at the top before he walked back over to the twins.

"Eleven inches, holly and phoenix feather…an unusually combination, but nice and supple.." he mused. Harry slowly took it from him, feeling the sudden stability as his magic coursed through the wand. He stood a stumbled step back in amazement before he looked back at the wand maker.

"Oh, bravo! Yes, indeed, oh, very good. Well, well…how curious…how very curious…" He stated, a glazed look coming to his eyes as he thought about every wand he'd ever made.

"Pardon me sir, but's what's curious?" Zia questioned, glancing at her brother as he placed the wand carefully back in its box before he held in close to his chest.

"I remember every wand I've ever sold Miss Potter. It just so happens that the phoenix whose tail father is in your brother's wand, gave another feather-just one other. It is very curious indeed that he should be destined for this wand when its brother-why its brother gave you those scars. I think we can expect great things from you Mr. Potter, great things indeed." Ollivander stated. Severus quickly stood up when he noticed the terrified look on Harry's face, quickly steering them out of the shop once they'd paid for both wands.

"Don't let that old man get to you." Zia stated, gently nudging her brother. Severus glanced over his shoulder at them as he led them both around to get their remaining items. He groaned when he saw a head of white hair headed towards them, easily recognizing his brother in law. He attempted to avoid the man since his Bella had been thrown into prison while they walked around freely. Narcissa smiled at him slightly before she turned to follow Draco over to the quidditch shop.

"Severus it has been some time. How have you been?" Lucius questioned as he stopped in front of them. Zia shifted slightly before she hid behind her brother at the sight of the man's cane. Harry carefully grabbed her hand before he pulled her over to a shop that seemed to sell different types of pets. Severus watched as they walked away, thankful that they seemed to understand the need for some privacy.

"Severus I wanted to inform you that our Lord has been working none stop to ensure his return. He has said that breaking the Death Eaters that were wrongfully locked up out." Lucius whispered, keeping his voice down. Severus rolled his eyes before he raised his wand, casting both a silencing charm and a notice me not spell.

"Lucius you can't just walk up to me in the middle of a crowd wizard street to talk to me about Lord Voldemort without some precautions. I am a professor at Hogwarts that just barely got out of going to prison myself if it were not for the fact that Dumbledore stepped in. We can speak about this at the Prince Manor at a later date because I need to get back to the two muggleborns students I am currently escorting to get their school supplies." Severus snapped. He ended the two spells before Lucius could respond, stalking towards the pet shop. He spotted Harry looking at the different owls that were being sold, clearly seeming to favor a beauty Snowy Owl. He walked over, placing his hand on the boy's shoulder though he didn't miss how he flinch or moved to cover his stomach.

"You are permitted to have a pet if you want and owls are very useful creatures. That one seems to have already bonded with you from the way neither of you can take your eyes off each other." He explained. Zia stood off to the side watching them, noticing how comfortable Harry seemed with their future professor, knowing he had an extremely hard time trusting any adults. She smiled before she walked over, standing beside him. She tilted her head slightly watching as the Snowy Owl flew from her perch to land on Harry's shoulder. He smiled, raising his hand to brush it against her feathers.

*** *** *** August 31 *** *** ***

Severus was silent as he stood in his classroom giving it a final look over before the students arrived for term to start. He shoved his hands the pockets of his muggle pants before he pulled out a crumbled envelope, having forgotten he'd shoved it into his pocket when he had opened it to retrieve the supplies list. He unwrinkled it reading the address for a moment, feeling his anger start to get the better of him as he read Cupboard under the stairs. His gaze briefly read the name, not realizing just what it said until he read it again. Hadrian Snape.

"What? What joke is this?" he whispered, running his fingers over the enchanted ink. He slowly sank into his chair, knowing in his heart that it wasn't a joke. The Hogwarts letters were magically written and sent out. It updated itself for every magically child born and any that died, ancient magic that couldn't be tampered with no matter how hard someone tried. The potions master quickly stood up and walked into his private chambers, needing to call Narcissa. He tossed a small amount of Floo powder into the fireplace, calling out Malfoy Manor, the envelope still tightly clutched in his hand. When he exited he was standing in the Floo room, the only room in the manor that was connected to the Floo network.

"How can Dobby help Potion Master Snape?" a house elf questioned, popping into the room.

"I need to speak with Narcissa and Lucius this instant!" Severus ordered, glaring at the bumbling creature. Dobby escorted him into one of the smaller sitting rooms before disapparating to find his masters. Severus paced the room silently, glancing at the portraits that were sleeping around the room. He sighed, once again looking at the envelope in his hands, his heart racing at the thought of just how close his son had been. He had had him within arm's reach and had instead returned him to those muggles. Lucius stepped into the room first, soon followed by both Draco and Narcissa. Narcissa reached up to rub the sleep from her eyes causing Severus to realize just how late it was.

"Severus what seems to be the problem that you had to come to the manor at nearly midnight?" Lucius questioned, crossing his arms. Severus only held out the envelope which Narcissa stepped forward to take. The female Malfoy slowly sat down in one of the chairs when she saw the name, her heart breaking at the sight of her beloved nephew's name.

"What is this? Who would do something this cruel?" she whispered, looking at her husband with tear filled eyes. Lucius took the envelope from her, frowning when he saw the name that had been written and felt the magic that lingered within the ink.

"I don't understand Severus. Where did you get this?" he questioned looking at his brother in law.

"It was in my pocket from when I took the Potter Twins to Diagon Alley. I shoved the envelope in my pocket and…just forgot about it. I didn't bother reading the name of it since I just needed the supplies list." Severus explained, moving to sit in the chair closest to the fireplace. He rested his head against his hands for a moment.

"Can't it just be a fake? Some kind of joke?" Draco questioned, curious at the adults' reactions to Hogwarts letter.

"No Dragon. The Hogwarts attendance book is protected from any changes other than made by itself by ancient magic. It is self-updating when a child is born or dies. The letters are also magically sent out. Professor McGonagall doesn't see them until the child sends a response with a yes or no on whether or not they will be attending Hogwarts at the start of term." Narcissa explained, gently pulling her son closer to her. She had been terrified when she had discovered her nephew so cold and lifeless that afternoon once Lucius had returned home from the ministry. She still felt the overwhelming guilt it left when his birthday came around or on any holidays that were spent together as a family. The young woman hadn't lost just her nephew, she'd lost her brother in law and sister too. It had been hard to be around each other after Hadrian's death simply for the fact that they didn't truly understand just what had happened.

"But isn't this a good thing? It means that my cousin is alive." Draco stated, regaining his mother's attention. Narcissa looked up at her husband with a worried expression. It made no sense that one of the Aurors that had raided their home would switch out Hadrian for a dead baby unless someone had ordered it. Lucius had a soured expression on his face as he thought back to that day, remembering see Dumbledore in the ministry speaking with Mad Eyed Moody that morning but hadn't thought much of it at the time.

"Dumbledore will never let me near him, but I worry that I won't be able to speak with him during the term outside of classes unless I assign him detentions which would honestly cause Dumbledore to grow suspicious over time." Severus sighed, sinking back against the chair. He reached up to run his fingers through his hair as he thought about how his son had reacted.

"Why don't we attempt to talk to them on the platform tomorrow? If anything, he might be placed in your house." Narcissa stated, attempting to get him to look on the brighter side of things. Severus could only nod, his mind wandering to the possibilities that tomorrow would bring.
