A Mother's Love
Prologue: Up in Flames

It was the arguing that had caught Angela's attention.

She had just gotten back from shopping and was going to pop into Maura's home to check in on her. Maura had been throw a huge rollercoaster from what the young woman had told her. In a moment of weakness from Maura, Angela was told that Maura's biological father was that of Paddy Doyle, one of the most feared mobsters in Boston.

And Jane had shot him.

That was all she could get out of the young woman before she began to weep, which made Angela drop the conversation and console the woman. She later found out from Jane herself that they hadn't spoken since so it was surprising to hear Jane's voice coming from the house.

"You can't just quit Maur!" Jane's voice yelled out.

"I can do whatever I please Jane! You are not my keeper!" Maura shouted back.

"I get that you're pissed at me Maur but running away from this isn't going to solve anything!" Jane argued.

"Running away? Isn't that rich coming from you?!" Maura shot back.

Angela was stunned. She had never heard Maura's voice sound so venomous before. It was almost terrifying to hear from the normally polite and socially awkward woman. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?!" Jane yelled back.

'And the Lioness has awakened,' Angela thought with a sigh. She wanted to go in and break this argument up but she couldn't. The argument sounds as if it was reaching its fever pitch and her coming in wouldn't stop it.

"It means that you always run away!" Maura yelled angrily.

"Ma-" Jane tried to interrupt.

"No! I've heard everything you've had to say and I am sick and tired of hearing your rattle on! You will listen to me for a change!" Maura shouted.

From the silence, Angela knew Jane was shocked at the outburst.

"From the moment we met, you've been running. Anytime things get tough for you, you run as far away as you can to escape it. Whether it's from literal problems to emotional, you will run until you're forced to face it head on and even then it's a battle!" Maura explained. "You keep everything walled up that no one can break through it and when people get even an inch, you force them out!"

"M-Maura…" Jane said.

It was the first time Angela had heard her daughter so weak sounding.

It felt out of place.

"You ran away from Korsak after Hoyt because you couldn't face being weak in front of him. You ran away from Frankie after Emily Stern kidnapped him and then you ran from everyone for two weeks after you shot yourself and then again when Abigail Sherman was killed!" Maura continued.

"I-I…" Jane started but Angela didn't hear anything follow up from it.

"Each and every time, I came up with excuses as to why you ran away but after you ran away from me for three weeks after bringing Agent Dean to arrest my biological father and then shooting him yourself, I can't defend it any longer!"

"Get off of my back!" Jane finally screamed out. "I left because you're the one that refused to let me help!"

"You shot him Jane!" Maura screamed. "He came there to protect me and you shot him because Agent Dean was shot!"

"W-What?" Jane stammered. Angela could hear the fight leaving her daughter's voice at those words. "I-I Is that what you think?"

Angela didn't hear anything for a moment until her daughter, with a shaky voice, said "He shot Gabriel, yes but I didn't shoot him for revenge…I shot him because he did shoot a federal agent, had a gun aimed at me and he was near you…I was terrified you would be h-hurt…"

"Paddy Doyle is a cruel man I have not forgotten that," Angela heard Maura say, although she had to strain to hear it her talk. "But if he wanted to kill the agent, he would have without hesitation. Yet, he didn't and in turn, you nearly killed him and you ran from me…"

Angela could hear the hurt in Maura's voice as she said "All of that was painful to deal with but what really hurt was that not only did you not trust me while being undercover, You left me for three weeks dealing with all of these twisted and dark emotions on my own…You left me feeling hurt, betrayed, alone and hopeless… You didn't just shoot Paddy Doyle that day, you shot me Jane."

"I-I was just trying to give you space Maur," Jane said. "God, I didn't mean for you to feel like this."

She heard Maura take a deep breath before she said "Well congratulations Jane…You did what Ian and many others failed to do…And because of that long period of time, I had time to think on us and our friendship."

Angela began to get a bad feeling in her gut as Jane stuttered out "W-What do you mean by that Maur?"

"You broke my heart Jane and no matter how many times you apologize, that hurt and betrayal will never go away…and because of that, I think its best that we end this." Maura told her with a shaky breath,

"No…No, no, no, no, no" She heard her daughter say with fear heavy in her voice. "No, d-don't say that Maur…I screwed up, I know and I'm so sorry. I'm begging you please don't do this…Please Maur!"

"My name is Maura Isles, Detective Rizzoli," Maura responded with a tone that made Angela's heart break. And if her heart was breaking, she knew Jane's was completely shattered. "Former Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Chief Medical Examiner and daughter of Patrick "Paddy" Doyle and I wish for you to leave…."

"Mau-"

"Please D-Detective!" Maura exclaimed and it was then Angela could hear that Maura was near tears.

It was silent for a moment before Jane's emotionless voice replied "I-If that is what you really want Dr. Isles…I'll give that to you…"

"Goodbye Detective," Maura simply replied.

Not wanting to be seen, Angela quickly ran to the side of the house and managed to see her daughter, without her usually swagger, walking towards her car. She looked as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders. It was then she managed to catch an image of Maura crying in the living room.
